Size difference between a wolf and coyote

  • We have had many folks comment that the wolves we are studying are actually coyotes. The implication being that we don’t know how to tell the two species apart. Basically, some people think we are idiots.
    We suspect the confusion comes from the fact that wolves in our area look smaller relative to wolves in other areas. Thus, some folks are convinced we are studying coyotes or some sort of coyote-wolf hybrid.
    Additionally, we share photos and videos of wolves during summer when they do not have big fluffy winter coats and thus look much smaller.
    Despite all of this, there is still a substantial size difference between coyotes and wolves in our area, and differentiating between the two canines is usually pretty simple. The video below provides a good example of this.
    There are a few instances when it is tough to tell the two apart from a trail camera video or photo but it certainly is not hard to tell the difference when we are up close (e.g., collaring a wolf).

    Nice job on showing the difference. Most people have no idea. Where I live in rural Ontario we have coyotes and wolves. I hear them both and know they where they are in our wooded area, but I’ve only ever spotted coyotes. I’d love to see a wolf.

      Connecticut coyotes are a good size and in the northeast corner are silent until about 11 pm and then they make a few nips, no howling, and go off hunting. They will kill cats and small dogs if they are left outside. I did hear coyote howl in the Yale Forest around midnight when I was 17 back in 1966. I had been in the west and had heard them there. They do not sound like hounds or beagles. It was another 20 years before people were accepting the proliferating Eastern Coyote.

      new england and Connecticut have eastern coyotes which have wolf DNA and are the result of hybrids. Eastern coyotes are much bigger then the ones out west and look different. Some eastern coyotes or coywolves in CT are very very big....bigger than a German shephard but these are rare. I have seen one like that up close and followed it for a while in my car.. It was massive and way taller and bigger then the coyotes commonly seen in CT. Night and day difference. Scared the shit out of me. Fur pattern and how the fur looked different and head was more wolf like....he was fast as fuck and I clocked him over 38 miles per hour and he took off and I could not keep up. he was big boy. Deff not a wolf. Just a big eastern coyote/coywolf.

    I've seen a few wolves in my day, and quite a few coyotes. The one simple thing I tell people who aren't sure is: you will know if/when you see a wolf. The "holy crap" factor leaps out at you. It'll look like an overgrown husky...walking on stilts.

    • @janemillerick9614
      @janemillerick9614 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think they even look like that really. there’s that neck factor, wolves having extremely thick/ powerful necks but covered in long fur. thick legs as well.. there’s really no mistaking the two!
      (how arrogant anyone would think these researchers don’t know what they’re doing!))

    We used to have coyotes here in Northwest indiana. But in my county, they tore down all the wooded areas to build homes and duplexes. Now all the different species of wildlife were forced to move who knows where.😪

    • @twostop6895
      @twostop6895 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      they likely died off, when you take a away forest you remove food and a place to shelter, it is admirable that India protects Tigers but it does no good if their habitat is not protected, removing a forest in Tiger habitat makes deer die off leaving Tigers with nothing to eat

    a cayote is about the size of a german shepard for comparison

    • @realitydrakesrealitydpoet3727
      @realitydrakesrealitydpoet3727 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No. Coyotes are smaller than German Shepherds. And Northern Gray Wolves are larger than German Shepherds. So basically, German Shepherds are in-between the size of a Northern Wolf and a Coyote. Coyotes on average weigh about 20 to 45 pounds. Northern Gray Wolves on average weigh between 80 to 140 pounds. Some gigantic wolves have weighed up to 175 pounds. And German Shepherds on average weigh between 50 to 90 pounds. This puts German Shepherds right between the Coyote and the Northern Gray Wolf in size. Coyotes are small to medium size wild canines that are a little larger than a Red Fox, but are smaller than a Wolf. Even though they all have a generally similar appearance.
