Such a big fan of Paul Pope’s work. He’s one of the few artists who makes me want to draw when I see his work. Hope you can get him for an Interview at some point

He got kicked out of the Ogre once. Walking in before the shop opened wearing a fur coat with no shirt. One of the shop guys (note it wasn’t Gib.) smelled patchouli, had no idea who he was, and kicked him out of the store. It’s kind of funny as there were several original pages of his on the walls from Ballad of Doctor Richardson.

Micheluzzi is great and he's just one of many little-known Italian comics masters. When you guys feel like going for a deep dive into Italian comics, let me know and I'll post you a list of authors.

If you check out some Micheluzzi work, take note of his sfx lettering. I’d say that is one of the things Pope has pulled from him. More brushy of course, but similar following the action feel.

Atílio Micheluzzi is an amazing master of b&w inking. "Johnny Focus" is more famous, but "Petra Chérie" is pretty amazing too. Well worth a look.

Great video! You guys really got me into Paul Pope. Actually he was on another podcast a few months ago "Alex Toth In Depth," hosted by Paul Fricke. During the interview Pope mentions Attilio Micheluzzi, who is great and I wish there were more collections of his work available. Pope also mentions Guido Crepax and I would love it if you guys would put his work under the microscope. I know Fantagraphics is currently publishing The Complete Crepax series. I have two volumes (3 and 4) and they are amazing. Keep up the good work! It is not just Kayfabe, this really is my favorite TH-cam channel.

He was one of the guys, like Sam Kieth and the Hernandez Bros, that tinfromed me in the 90's that comics don't have to be one thing. It had style, it had real thought in it, it had a flow that even till now I chase in my own work. Amazing. THanks for showing!

The way he renders the ground, it almost looks like he just uses that space like scratch paper to test his brush while he’s inking other areas. I wonder if he has a page off to the side where there’s some ground to texture, and hops over to it to wipe his brush while working on a different page, even.

Thank you Ed & Jim for this phenomenal episode! Paul Pope is such an incredible talent and he completely blew my mind when I first discovered THB. At that time in the Nineties I had very much pulled away from the mainstream superhero fare of the big publishers and was strictly picking up independents, self-published and creator owned books along with being an avid reader of the Vertigo line (as I still had a passion for that corner of the DC universe!). Along with the "Pulp Hope", I found myself also deeply drawn into the books of Chester Brown, Seth, Adrian Tomine and Jason Lutes. Have you guys ever done a deep dive into his work? Jar Of Fools and Berlin are absolute bangers!!!

Pope's work brought me back to comics in the 90s like Hernandez Brothers did in the 1980s, inspiring and exciting art and storytelling. Can never get enough.

Glad to see some Pope coverage on the channel, he rules. Also glad you're looking a big oversized book of his I don't have, even as I'm been grabbing other stuff of his (P-City Parade, that's a good one) this year.
Attilo Micheluzzi is an Italian comics artist, Fantagraphics is going to start doing a library of his books next year. Back in the eighties he had a strip reprinted in the Eclipse magazine Aces.

Man, I would love a whole documentary or, even better, a book an that whole Kodansha thing... Baru's Autoroute du Soleil started there, I believe, but that's about all I know about that. He may be the artist Pope as talking about. I also remember a German cartoonist being in the mix (maybe Andreas Dierßen, maybe not).

First time I saw a Paul Pope comic, it reminded me of Love and Rockets. Just a completely personal world he created with no regard to ‘typical’ hero stuff usually on offer. Almost dream-like? Now I want more.

I was always waiting for "Welcome to Mars" offered in a issue of Previews. A simple image sucked me in! I had no idea what it was, and eventually I ended up with Giant THB Parade. I own three copies ! Aside from the fantastic art...and the intoduction to not only Jay Stephens...but to Mobious! I wrote a letter to Mr.Pope because his art spoke to my teenage ass.....I got a letter back...from his secratery Holly!

Pope to me looks like he was influenced by Jaques Tardi, Munoz and Sampayo... maybe Alberto Breccia or looking at what David Lapham was doing with Stray Bullets. All of this is great stuff.
