  • Link to 4k Upscale: • Norma Jean - Live 2003...
This was shot in the Winter of 2003 on a Hi-8 camera using Nightshot, hence the lack of color. I cannot remember the venue, but I want to say it was called the "School House" or something. Norma Jean was the headlining band, but mewithoutyou were running late so Norma Jean went on early.
It was my first time seeing Norma Jean live and at the time I wasn't very familiar with them, but this show was impressive. The sound quality isn't so great, as I'm standing near the drummer, but nonetheless this is a good watch. Scottie falls and damages his guitar during the last song and breaks it on one of the rafters as the song comes to a close.
I managed to record mewithoutyou's opening song, "Nice and Blue" before I had to go.

It would've been much more incredible had it been with their original singer, Josh Scogin, and not this guy. I saw them twice with this guy and his voice was god awful. I saw then 4 times with Josh and it was epic. Even saw them before they were called Norma Jean, back when they were Luti Kriss and dude...they were insane live.

I wish this is what metalcore was now, just 5 dudes that looked like they walked outta their mall jobs into a grungy underground bar, you can hardly understand the lyrics half the time, but the crowd can scream them so loud that it doesn't matter, the singer constantly looks a mixed of exhausted & wired, and the guitarists cannot stand still, the glory days..

I was fortunate enough to see Norma Jean with Josh at the helm and it was one of the most intense moments of my whole life. Next to Converge, or maybe Drain nowadays, there was no live performance quite like it. i was just getting into the underground music scene in the south back in 2002-03 when i was in high school. its hard to overestimate how big these guys were in that scene. i remember when they came through on tour, it was an event. bedlams in pensacola fl. i wasnt that into screamo at the time, but now i really regret not seeing them. actualy im not even sure if that show was AA...that was one thing that sucked being a minor back then, a lot of these shows happened at bars or clubs, although a lot of times theyd let underage kids in as long as they put those giant black X's in magic marker on each hand.
anyway, bless the martyr is still one of the best of the genre.
