I grew up in a small town. Skateboarded every single day. And was harrassed every single day by either the cops or someone who thought I was a degenerate. All I cared about was getting better. Pushing myself. Deep down I always knew those people were in the wrong for being so mean but it still made me feel terrible.
In a small town you want to be seen as a good kid. You want people to see you for who you truely are, but they would judge you for wanting to skateboard bc it wasnt the norm. Everyone knows everyone so it makes it hard when youre giving a reputation you dont deserve.
I left that small town. I live a happy, fulfilling life still skateboarding everyday. That small town is now rampant with drugs. Destroying the families of the people that gave me that label so long ago. The same cops are stuck in their dead end positions where they never get a chance at promotion. Getting fatter and older. Now that im an adult i realized it was better i didnt become part of that community. Not having that sense of belonging caused me to go out into the world and find it. And i had the courage to do so bc of skateboarding.

Skateboarding is all about fighting fear yourself; expanding your comfort zone. Some people think that skaters are just jumping down a 10 stair set with reckless abandonment of their common sense, but nobody doing that hasn't built their way up from rolling off of a curb. Even stepping on the board for the first time, falling backwards, slamming awkwardly only to get up ignore your fears and balance on the board a little bit better the next time is a test of courage. You can build from there, slowly becoming comfortable with harder, physically riskier things, but you'll never be completely fearless when you're truly challenging yourself.

As being a skater since 8 year old and now 26 (no longer skating as much) I can totally relate with what dr. Peterson is saying when it comes to being more competent, risk taking and a sense of risk which I can say helped me in my life enormously!

Christian Noffra Schools, establishments, businesses, city parks... these places are not against kids experiencing masculinity or becoming man or being courageous or anything like that.. it's not some philosophical conspiracy . Kids are banned from skateboarding places because of our lawsuit Society we live in where every little thing that happens to us we find some way to sue somebody else... schools and businesses that banned skateboarding on their property are just trying to cover their own fucking ass because of how retarded they know at least half the kids parents are. It doesn't take an intellectual or a professor to realize this.... or at least it shouldn't.
marc scott I'm going to go on a limb and say majority of skaters who are harmed don't do anything... I mean if there is a serious injury/a younger kid getting hurt I could see parents wanting to sue, but most kids don't try shit that will destroy them or even do street skating in the first place lol, and again I haven't heard of a heavily Injured skater taking legal action against the spot he skates. Also that just doesn't happen at a regular basis I believe. I think what Peterson is trying to promote is the dissipation of that paranoia of legal action. But at the same time how do you do that because there definitely are a few cases where people probably will sue... Idk I think this is a complex topic and I'm not trying to go in depth/show malice I just read your comment and felt like responding with my two cents. :-)
Liam Pannell I get what you're saying. But here's the thing When I used to skate as a teenager me and my friends would break bones and hurt ourselves all the time. It's actually really easy to hurt yourself especially when you suck and your trying to do cool shit that you see in skateboarding videos. And it's definitely not the kids that Sue these establishments and places it's the parents. literally people try to sue businesses for any possible way they can get a dime for nothing. I just watched a video on tons of people in class action lawsuits suing fucking tons of restaurants for misleading calorie information.. a lady sued Subway and won because she bought a foot long and it was 11 in..... It's really apparent that we are living in some sort of weird sue-happy Society where if someone sees an opening where they can potentially get a lot of money at a corporation's expense by blaming them for anything bad that happens to them they will jump on it. And I'm not saying intelligent or honorable good people like many of us are and I'm sure you are as well. I guess plain and simple there's just a lot of shity people out there.... and a lot of them are parents... and so when their kids are skateboarding at the mall and there's no signs that say "no skateboarding" and the kid breaks his ankle... I'm sure there is a huge percentage of people who would try to sue the mall. All this to say... has nothing to do with masculinity or trying to restrict any sort of upbringing or risk-taking or anything like that.. honestly I watched the video so long ago I don't even remember exactly what Jordan Peterson said. I agree with him on a lot of stuff....to be honest I like the dude. But sometimes he reads really far into things trying to find some sort of existential or really deep meaning behind something that's blatantly very simple.

This is awesome. I discovered Mr. Peterson about 2 month ago and can't stop watching his lectures. I'm also a skater for nearly 20 years and into martial arts for almost 9. And this genius can articulate the essence of everything those activities have done to me so effortless it's almost frightening.

I feel like this is true. When I was a kid, I had no inhibitions, worries, or fears, I just said and did whatever I wanted. My mother spent years telling me "Don't do that you could hurt yourself" and constantly making me worry. I guess it gave me the idea of "I shouldn't do anything so I don't get hurt". Now I'm 21 and I'm afraid of taking risks, talking to new people, and even leaving the house. I swear to God when I have children that I won't raise them to be afraid of the world.

I've thought the same thing about other ' masculine ' past times like motorcycle racing and boxing . Men need these dangerous challenges to test their limits and achieve goals . The fact that you might get killed or seriously injured gives you focus and a sense of hightened reality . I'm glad there's still such a thing as the Isle of Man TT and other dangerous sports .

I remember when I was a teenager my friends and I were skating at a local church at night. A guy comes out from the church and we started walking away because we assumed he'd tell us to leave, but instead he asked if we wanted the lights on in the parking lot. We were all surprised and stayed there skating all night until my friend could hit a gap. Probably the only guy we came across when skating that didn't tell us to leave or try to pick a fight with us.
My son was really into skateboarding as a pre teen .... it seemed to me that he was into anything that was dangerous - stunts of all and any kind ... I use to think if this kid survives being 15 it will be a miracle .. he did survive, he still kind of does this stuff - he loves to snowboard in the mountains and do sky diving - I wanted to put him in a bubble, really I did ... of course he was having none of that, I think he was about 18 when I realized how stupid that was -- that men have to do something worth while - they can not be coddled and protected - I remember watching some movie about guys jumping out of helicopters into the ocean to save people ... and I thought "thank God my son doesn't do anything like that" ... and then it hit me why do you not want your son to be a hero?? What good is living if you can not accept death? And the Bible quote came back to me "those who save their life will lose it and those who lose their life will save it"
I thank God everyday for my husband (may he rest in peace) ... you know because if I would have had my way ... I would have coddled my son to DEATH ... I think about single moms .... all these boys didn't stand a chance, with mommy putting them in a bubble - because that is what mothers do, they can not help it ... they need a dad to balance them.

I skateboarded everyday for about 10 years and I completely agree. That was my initiation into manhood. It was also the only time I could get away from my parents and adults and be a kid and get into trouble and learn life lessons. Louis CK actually talks about this, he said something to the degree of kids who skateboard learn how to fall and get back up again and that's what life is, a series of painful fails where you have to get back up.

Skateboarding made me a better, wiser, and more confident person then I was before I started skating. I started when I was 11, and I’m 26 now. Skateboarding shaped the man I am today, and I wouldn’t change it for the world. I’m thankful God brought skateboarding into my life, and he knew I would need it to help me in many ways.
As a Skater I can appreciate this a lot. Love Jordan.
I'm getting old now, but I skated a lot back in my teens and early 20's. We frowned upon safety gear and helmets. The best of my friends went on to be pro, but died aged 23 from head trauma while skating. It was a terrible time, my whole group was devastated, and it sort of marked the point that our youth ended and we had to grow up. Now I'm torn between what advice to give kids, I guess I'd have to advise them to wear a helmet.

QuantumFrost I guess you need these moments in life, I mean now I never stress when small things go wrong, as I know what a real terrible situation is. I'm fed up of people getting all worked up over small events, words, like they never had to face a really tough situation. Holding your friends hand thinking your goodbyes, knowing they will switch the machine off in a few hours, that kinda puts things in perspective.

skateboarders are some of the nicest, most real people I've ever met. even the most basic of skateboarding techniques requires an absurd amount of practice, yet you see these kids doing insanely difficult tricks

As a skater I think I can speak for all of us when I say this, skating gave me a confidence like no other, and every skater has a humility like no other because we know how difficult it is to even Ollie let alone the tricks we learn. So to hear Jordan Peterson defend us feels so validating. He gets it. Shred til’ your dead!
I've skated basically my entire life and it's awesome to see Peterson recognize the effort we put into getting tricks (which by the way has made professional street skaters like Nyjah Houston a millionaire before he even turned 20)

This whole thing where it's now the LAW that children must wear helmets and pads when skateboarding is absurd. If a parent wants their kid to skateboard like that, it's _their_ job to make it happen. Dragging in law enforcement is both lazy and overkill, quite apart from the issues Peterson raises here.

I have a memoir written by my great-aunt; my mother's aunt who was the youngest daughter of her grandfather from his first wife. (He was widowed and then remarried; my grandfather is from his second marriage.) She was married to a Presbyterian minister who was posted to a number of different congregations throughout eastern Canada at a time when much of it was very sparsely settled. At Millerton, NB (a Methodist church, but they weren't particular) living along the Miramichi River, she wrote of her alarm the first time she saw her children playing in it. It made her fearful for their safety -- but she didn't stop them, because she knew it would be worse (or impossible) to forbid them.

Danial Khan he’s a vert skater. Most vert skaters already wear helmets and pads anyways. But skating handrails and stair sets is street skating, where most people don’t wear helmets.

abcdefg hijklmnop he primarily skates vert that's why he wears pads. If he's at his own home he tends to skate without them.
A helmet can save your life. You might not realize it unless you've had a terrible injury like I had.
On vert you need pads and a helmet. Pads are the main way you can slide down a ramp without skinning yourself, and falling on vert without a helmet could just straight up end your life

I think he probably knows its good marketing. Parents would rather their kids use products endorsed by the guy always wearing a helmet rather than one of the jackass guys punching each other in the nuts.
One thing Peterson didn't mention is the persistence that skateboarding teaches you. It takes a LONG time to land and then master a trick. Skateboarding taught me to FAIL and THEN pick myself up and TRY AGAIN. Jordan Peterson gets it.

I love my board and love skateboarding. Depresses me how many people have such a lack of appreciation for a sport that I put a lot of time, work, and effort into. It's a hard and skillful sport.

I feel like skateboarding is a pretty inherently gender neutral activity. There's nothing synonymous with masculinity about skateboarding itself aside from the fact that more men skate. I being a male skater frankly love to see women encouraged and inspired by skating.
bob jones Id say the risk involved appeals more to men than women. My dad got my sister and I into Skating, boarding, and surfing. From my experience, she would shy away from doing anything too dangerous in all these activities. But enjoyed it nonetheless.
Yes but I would argue that has little to do with the act of skateboarding and more with the differences in how society views men from women. Men tend to be seen and raised to be ruthless while women are told to be composed, safeguarded and delicate. So again to my understanding skateboarding has no INHERENT gender preference, it just happens that society favors the sport more towards men than something that has over time become a universally gender neutral sport like tennis for example. Women have proven to be 100% as capable as men in skateboarding but I would entirely attribute the inverse amount of women to men skaters to the already predominant male following. It is after all a statistically male dominated activity, but I would in no way use this info to discourage women from skating, especially as I've met many many amazing female skaters and follow even better pro female skaters.

Perfectly said. Mr Peterson. I remmeber when i stood upon a ramp with my skates, that were not even for ramps. I went on small ones and saw others going for the big. I went on top and watched and was scared what happens, when i go down there is no going back. I went down and felt the nervosity and when i was at its end realized i mastered it, felt a big wave of aww and proudness. Soone it was booring and I went for higher ones.... And when you are snowboarding and have such a high speed that you cant allow any failure and you are on constant adrenaline and at the end of the slope when you start to realize that the big danger is over, you feel the pressure going off and a wave of satisfaction hits you. YOu constantly want more and you know its sometimes near insanity or stupidity but on the other hand if you master it you push new boundaries. I rly realize how much less scared i was as a kid, when i remember, back when i was 11. and now i wanna try it again i feel so scared that i hold back and think.... how could i ever done this. You stop taking the risks when you are older but because you did push your boundries at a younger age you rly know what your limits are and what you are capable off, which in a way makes you more secure in talking and approaching new things. if you take this away from boys they will be rly unsure of themselfs even more so, since there is still a lot of pressure and expectations of young men, and they will have a hard time to do descisions and maybe cause they never exprienced dangeerous limits with high reward, it will be their downfall cause they overcommit....

My best group of friends were my skateboard buddies. I was the youngest of the group at 12. Ages between 13 and 16 from all kinds of backrounds. We all encouraged each other to get better. I ventured out of my home town for the first time because they knew how to use the busses and made sure I got home alright. We went all day to weird seaside spots and skated until the last bus. I was extremely fit and healthy and days were filled with excitement, struggle and constantly trying to impress my friends.
It was such an important time for me for sure.
I can boardslide handrails but I can't talk to girls. On a rail you eventually hit the ground and roll away but with girls I feel like I'm stuck on an endless slide.
John Paul unless you're lucky, it'll be a while before you meet the perfect lady for you. Until then, just have fun with women and don't take it too seriously. Women can smell desperation, and they love a man who doesn't give a shit about them. I know it's easier said than done, but you can change your mindset and not feel awkward around the ladies, things are much easier. Just make sure to stay the from away from the Crazy Ones.

I've only been skating for 2 years so I'm not doing some too crazy stuff. But, skateboarding really helped me build courage. I've fallen countless times and hurt myself pretty much every time I go skateboarding. I keep on going because I like it and it's making me tougher.

It's not appealing at all actually. We'd rather skate, pick ourselves up, skate, and then dip. I 100% guarantee you no skater means harm in any way shape or form to anyone or anything. Some people are not fortunate enough to have local skateparks and so we make do with what we have. If the property owner tells us to leave then we leave, simple as that. But imagine working at something with your, blood, sweat, and tears (literally) and having the opportunity of success stripped away from you. That's what makes it so hard to comply with people when we're told to leave, when we're doing nothing to harm anything or anyone and we're just trying to improve our abilities. I'm 16 and have been skating for 3 years. I love skateboarding.

I was a shy boring kid and this makes me remember all the times my brother basically forced me to do brave stupid things, and now I want to go do something stupid. You get the most physical joy out of life doing physically dangerous things with your friends.

In my first few weeks of University, I met some of my best friends at some old dirt jumps on the side of campus. We all put hundreds of hours into restoring and expanding them, and always meeting new people who would join us. It was some of the most fun I've had at university, and met people that I believe will be life-long friends. I fell a couple times, but my confidence grew rapidly, and we built bigger jumps, and I learned to judge my speed better, and became a better rider. But in November, I came out one day to find that they had been torn down. They weren't in the way of anything, we never cut down any trees, and we weren't near any buildings. The only flaw was that they were a little too close to a gravel road, and the campus security likely saw them, and ordered them to be torn down. Thousands of man hours lost. I'm still good friends with the people I met there, but its too bad nobody else will get to have fun with those jumps again.

Just a small note... Often wearing a helmet when skating throws off the balance and messes with your peripherals if it's big, so it ends up being much more dangerous actually... Been a skater for 29 years and still going. Filled my life with endless joy
There’s some young guy named Andy Anderson who is a pro skater who wears a helmet. It doesn’t mess up his balance but I still don’t wear them because my head sweats and helmets are uncomfortable and they get nasty
This sounds good until you take into account what the price of failure could be, the kid could hit his head and become unable to walk, talk or think properly. Its not fair to leave that kind of decision to kids who arn't in the right state of mind because their brains arn't fully developed, ESPECIALLY the part of the brain for determining risk. Dr.Peterson should know that more than anyone else.

Part of owning my ADHD as an adult in her thirties is overcoming the stigma related to the garden-variety clumsiness that is a hallmark of the condition - which caused me to give up skateboarding early on. A month ago I picked it up again and I find that it helps me regulate my emotions tremendously.
Mr Jordan, how do you explain cultures such as the Chinese and Welsh who have opposite views of dragons than most Indo-European cultures?
He might argue that they have a more similar than different view - dragons are a source of chaos and danger, but they're also associated with wealth. But the differences in culture are still fascinating.
I feel like the dragon is simply a proxy for chaos. In Asian cultures, they have Oni and spirits, which act on their own accord, and can be quite destructive.
They Also believe that within the self is order and chaos, whereas the European had a more... extrinsic view of things, as a man was as agent within a sea of order and chaos that lay outside the self.

Being a source of wealth and chaos, if one can control and harness this dragon, then do they inherit the wealth? On the same topic of JP's views on getting to know your inner psychopath. Being a skateboarder for 10 years , which I’m 19 now, what Jordan Peterson says is the absolute truth when it comes to skateboarding. Before I do any trick that may be dangerous, i prepare my brain mentally by visioning myself doing the trick I intend on doing, thinking of the worst case scenario, then by understanding the unlikelihood of the worst of the worst happening I just saying “fuck it” and fully commit. Skateboarding, although raises you to become a rebel , the sport also trains you to overcome the fear of failure. With that strength to power through failure and trying again, I am now working on obtaining my first patent for an automotive app invention that I’ve been working on while people around me didn’t have faith in me, wanting me to live a normal life, but now that they see things getting into place they’re all ears. Lol I didnt mean to write a book , but if your kid is already trying to be some badass at like 10, give him skateboard and see what happens.
That was me as a kid! Take the risk, and do so with enough competence to avoid injury. All the crazy shit I did, and friends would often ask "how come you never get hurt". Because I spent the time getting good at it.
not just the risk taking, but the persistence. You dont land those on the 1st try (usually), but failing over and over (while also getting hurt), until you finally land it.

I don't skateboard but I do martial arts. We only wear thin gloves, if even that. And we do that because we have found that when people face no fear of getting hurt, they become reckless fighters. They leave openings. They don't control their power. But when they have no pads, we found they are very careful about choosing their targets.
