Thank you for posting this. As another said below this show changed dramatically throughout the season. I loved seeing this. When I saw them in Nashville the guard wore black coats and hats for the bottle dance. Amazing how much rewriting and they still delivered an amazing finished product at finals. This is one of my all time favorite shows ever. Doesn’t have to win a championship to endure. This show has endured. As have so many of vanguards productions over the years.

It was awesome being part of this show. The show was just not what it was supposed to be by the end of the season. The harshness of the judging for our attempt to bring back the feel of the 70's even for those few last minutes just killed the spirit in the corps. It was a visual blob by the end of the season, but musically it was always there, in your face and undeniably great. Just look at the I&E scores that year. SCV took nothing less than 2nd in any caption other than Soprano which was 3rd.

It was a great show. My fondest memory was off the field, in the finals lot, witnessing Royer conduct Send in the Clowns for the last time. Chills.

92vanguard Wow. I never realized the show had changed that much over the summer. But “visual blob”? Not hardly. I marched with Spirit of Atlanta that year, so I saw your final show in person. It was absolutely phenomenal! I can’t remember a lot of that night, but I remember that the Cavaliers won. I don’t remember anything about their show, or what the name of it was. I think Phantom did the 1812 overture, and Blue Devils did When a Man Loves a Woman. I vaguely remember that or anything else of that night. But your show still gives me chills when I hear that music, and I can remember absolutely everything about watching your show. Just like it happened yesterday. Well done, Best show of my life, hands down.

The point I was making about a "visual blob" was that quite literally everything visual that had been in the show was stripped out. The color guard ended up wearing featureless plain black uniforms and used one silk for the whole show. Any reference to "old school" that were there up til mid season were also stripped out. It was quite literally an entirely different show visually. The only thing that didn't change was the drill. Morale was horrible. We pulled it out at the end but the whole season became a miserable demoralizing depressing mess once we hit second tour.

I was in VK in 92 and saw you guys from the start at the Kingsmen Invitational. That show had everything including the kitchen sink. I was quite surprised how stripped down it became by the end, but I absolutely love this show the way it turned out. Perfect example of the KISS method. Sorry to hear the season was a beating for the members. I know how that goes.

92vanguard Oh man, I’m sorry to hear that. Low morale can certainly be difficult, especially on a long, hard tour like that. Much respect for weathering through a difficult season. I guess this is a good example of how things aren’t always what they seem, especially when you’re on the outside looking in. Thanks for clarifying that.

Man, I knew the show changed a lot that year, but I had never seen the earlier product until now. Wow! HUGE changes in multiple places, some pieces were cut entirely...I mean, it's amazing that they placed as high as they did, considering. But, they really killed it at finals and they made us jump to our feet. Classic show.

Competing against this and hearing it over and over again, I was really thrown off when they added onto the end of the show. That drum lick at the end of this vid still sticks 26 years later in my head as 'the end', and the rest is 'extra'. Love this show, though, absolutely my favorite of the year.

SCV performed an exhibition of this show around the Fourth of July in Gail’s hometown of Gowrie, Iowa. Fabulous! So much better than the finals version. Thanks for posting this! It was quite a site to see SCV marching down the small streets of Gowrie for their July 4th parade!

I was judging percussion performance at this show in Riverside, CA. Reminds me how you had to have eyes in the back of your head to keep from being seriously injured back then.😳Especially a Vanguard drill. Never experienced any disrespect from the Vanguard this year or any other year. Always very professional. I just roll my eyes now days watching percussion judges pace the sideline as new rules prevent them from going on the field. How they properly evaluate the battery is beyond me…..

It's probably a good thing the guard didn't change costumes at finals. The crowd might literally have exploded. Man that's an amazing show! Thanks for posting!

Ahhh....good ol' RCC...my home show when I was in BD (since we didn't do a show in San Diego)...with a press box MAYBE 5 degrees above horizontal.
At least HERE, tho, the box is on the 50, unlike the last time I marched there in 2006 with SoCal Dream....

Santa Clara Vanguard really hit their stride from the mid seventies on, earning first DCI title in1973, and all their shows from the eighties, nineties and 2000's were fabulous brass, percussion and marching performances. They're still going strong, kudos to the great Santa Clara Vanguard.

Question: I remember a rumor that at the end of the show on finals night as the drumline judge is walking past the snare line after the last note of the show, one of the snares yelled a NSFW platitude at him for how the judges had been all over them all year, especially with it being Gail’s last show ever. You can see in the video a snare yells something and the judge whips around real fast. Any truth to that old rumor?

@@BeautifuLakesStreamsBiologists it was during Finals Night. At the end of the show the cameras show the snare line. You can see one snare appearing to yell at a judge who is walking in front of them and the judge walks by. The clip i have ends before the judge turns around. It’s the middle of the snare line, you can see his head move like he yelled something. Here th-cam.com/video/qC2Iu0XVOr4/w-d-xo.html

Riverside tended to be VERY early in the season...still kinda is. The break may not have been ready for the field yet.

I remember seeing them like 4 times that year. The tenor drummers were always great, and yes the guard were smoking.

Funny you said that. Most of the local Cali members are hispanic and the girls have beautiful, long black hair.

The person who put up the graphic for this video clearly did not March Drum Corps. That posture is horrible. Now as for this show wow there were a lot of changes. I haven't seen the final product but did they completely scrap this third piece? Also I already knew by listening to this that bottle dance was it hit very early best season. Also on a completely random note, man I'm glad Drum Corps don't use please type of horns anymore. It's kind of like it was hard to tune. However this is one of my favorite Vanguard shows by far
