    We did this ride a while ago. Back then the bike ferry was a 15 foot pontoon boat with someone selling tickets at a card table. There was misty rain that day, but one of our best experiences ever on bike.

      Thanks for watching and for your comments. I hope you figure out a way to feel comfortable riding some of these trails. The Island Line is pretty suburban and there are a lot of people on it - so that should be a safe one. If you take the ferry over to the island that’s a little harder to maneuver alone.

    There is one correction that should be incorporated into the commentary: Freight rail traffic has NOT declined in America. In fact it has grown. What in fact happened was that over the last half century, many small railroad companies merged into larger companies, which merged into still larger companies, which ended up being merged into a handful of giant conglomerates. As a result, rail lines like the one in this video became redundant and were abandoned. Which is how this rail bed became available for recreational reuse. When the railroad crossed the lake, there was a moveable bridge [a "drawbridge' in layman's language] which permitted marine traffic to pass from one side of the causeway to the other. The short ferry ride closes the gap in the causeway which has existed since the bridge was removed.

    Had to rent a bike at a little shop in Burlington and all they had was the old-fashioned foot-brake kind. I fell off it when I tried to stop. Anyway, it was late fall when I rode on the causeway so I couldn't make it across the cut, which was frustrating. Love to do it again and to ride around North and South Hero. This was back in 2009.

    Did this a few years back, ten or so, and this is definitely a much improved version of the trail. I wonder how the parking is now in Burlington and where is the best place to park. About the causeway, don't know how it felt for you, especially being on e-bikes, but something to keep in mind, you may have to fight serious headwind. When I did it, I was flying toward the bike ferry with the wind behind me. On the way back, it was a struggle. That said, if you are adventurous, after the little ferry you get on the paved road and take one of the first left turns, look on the map. That takes you to a bigger ferry that takes you to the other shore of the lake. You can bike you way back to another big ferry that takes you across the lake to Burlington. Speaking of which, you must spend a couple of evenings late into the night on Church Street. Close to traffic, they have fantastic food and entertainers all over it. Also look for Champ, the "great snake" of the Champlain Lake.

    That looks like such a great ride. I've been to Burlington once; I wish I could get back there again soon. I love that you have the camera on your helmet. I hadn't thought of that. I've done a few biking videos with the camera on the handle bars. The footage comes out smooth, but I'd like to get more scenery around me as opposed to what's just in front on the trail. Are you doing any stabilization during the editing process? Great video!

    • @Adventuresonebikes
      @Adventuresonebikes  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I did have my camera on my helmet for the first couple of years. Then I moved to the handlebars. I have a flexclamp mount with a gooseneck now - so I can turn it while riding to get other things. That takes all the jerking around that you tend to do with your head when you are watching where you are going and taking video. My husband keeps his on his helmet so we do have that other perspective. Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful country. Being an electrical engineer I have a very hard time believing the people that now live in that area are genetically connected to or in any way related to the once might folk that built those rail lines and a good chunk of American steel works for that matter. I'm a big fan of the rail and according to legend and lore, the New England states once had powerful steel mills, built locomotive engines from the ground up, but I don't believe it. I've been in that country and saw no folk like that. I wonder how much of history is just an outright lie? I think this world I live in is not as imagined. Whoever it is that lives there now staggered in and found all that. Like the pyramids of Egypt, those falling over factories, mills and rails were found, inherited from a long-ago vanished group of people. It was all there long before "New Englanders" showed up. "Yoga" over there...LoL and certain proof that I'm right. Could be I'm in Purgatory even now, though in this case that dread place comes with lovely landscape. In any event, thanks for sharing.
