If they just wanted to make a yakuza show, that would have been fine. I wasn’t expecting a 1:1 of the games, but none of this felt authentic or good at all. But slapping the “LIKE A DRAGON” title on it and having beloved characters be reprised and then have them be a far cry from their original source material feels so weird and kind of like a slap in the face to fans who have dedicated hours to consuming the lore. Judgement was a good spin off of the series and set in the same world as yakuza, why couldn’t they have done something similar? Why didn’t they focus on lesser known characters within the Tojo clan and build stories on that instead of whatever the hell they did here?
More then that, they could have created new characters all together within the Tojo or Omi Alliance that would have been accepted. The people at RGG were hyping this up so much it's craaaazy.
Indeed, good argument with Judgment. Diffrent story and characters but same soul. They could make somethin like that. The 2007 movie had some awesome scenes and quite good fighting scenes, but as a while it was bad. If they improved the formula of the movie,it would be a cult classic.
This is like an alternative reality version. It's good in it's own way , if you take it for what it is. I'm a huge fan of the games ,I've played all the games 1 to 6 times. Yakuza 0 and Kiwami 1-2 the most and I have 7 RGG games in my top 10 all time There are moments where I was thinking "Kiryu would never say that in a million years" , or something bad happens and it was so stupid that it was funny
I think the best way to think of this series is that they're trying to "Christopher Nolan" Ryu Ga Gotoku. As in, what Nolan did with Batman in his trilogy was basically to try and ground Batman's story as much as possible while still making it recognizably Batman. So, Ra's Al Ghul isn't immortal, he just uses body doubles. Bane doesn't have magic steroids, he has pain suppressants. Batman has some high tech gadgets, but nothing totally bonkers out of the realm of reality, et cetera. In this case, they're trying to do the same for RGG/LAD, and one of the key things has got to be that Kiryu, well, Kiryu acts far too noble too early in Yakuza 0. Like, why wouldn't he be a violent punk if he wants to be in the Yakuza? Right? Wouldn't it be that type of person who wants to join a band of criminals? So him as a younger man being mouthy and rude and aggressive . . . that makes sense to me. It was also the implication of who he was in the original first Yakuza game, but this got softened over time so that he was basically always heroic when they made Yakuza 0, but this . . . eh, it was always the least true part of Y0 to me. It makes sense to me for Kiryu to become more heroic after his time in prison, but for him to have been a punk before then, and that's what they're doing on the show. So I think they're actually doing a pretty good job on that front. Grounding not only the fights and the realism of the world, but also character motivations. Especially with characters like Yumi, who, when we actually get to see her as a character and not a background plot goal operating in behind the scenes for a whole game, is much more interesting as a character.
So it doesn’t feel much like Like A Dragon. The editing is pretty confusing. Pacing is odd and character motivations are not very clear. However if you just take it as it is it’s not bad. Trying to compare with the games will leave you disappointed. I’ll keep watching as it’s pretty enjoyable in its own way. I’m pretty sure trying to actually capture Yakuza in its entirety is all but impossible so I’m just going with the flow.
Well not entirely impossible, if the director actually played the games to get a feel of the franchise, which once again is confirm they want to do their own thing. There was also news when the lead actors wanted to be faithful to the characters they were denied so. Its fine if they want to do their own spin on ocassion, but of course there is a fine line to appease both old fans and new comers, especially when said director want to do something different. There is a 50/50 chance it can turn out good or will makes people question why they don't make their own IP? We seen shows that have characters personalities and plots be so drastically different from the source material it makes you wonder what was the point of getting IP in the place?.
Oh, that was suppose to be the millennium tower? Its weird they went that approach since this building is suppose to look fairly normal early 2000s architecture like what we seen in the first game.
Yeah I'm not sure I like what they did with the Millenium Tower. It's WAY too sci-fi for no real reason. Like Millenium Tower is just a large office building in Kamurocho. It's impressive and all, but it's just one of many relatively normal skyscrapers with only a few unique design elements. The thing in the show is like a weird totalitarian regime monster building.
@@MidlifeCrisisJoe Yeah, as weird as the franchise has been, especially with their side stories, there was a fine line with how they design something to still somewhat work within their world. Which is ironic how a video game has done it better than a tv show.
I was worried about this prior to the release too. Because SO much of the series going forward is about the Haruka/Kiryu Father/Daughter relationship. If they had wanted to turn this into a series with legs rather than a one season show they NEEDED to have Haruka show up, so I was very glad to see her. But then . . . they killed Saejima? It's kind of like Christopher Nolan's take on Batman, but for Ryu Ga Gotoku. My only concern is that it seems like it could be a bit confusing for newcomers. The plot shifts around a LOT in time between two core time periods and then occasionally to little bits at different points, and I'm not sure the 10 Billion Yen plot's importance in "the present" (2005) has been emphasized enough to the overall arc compared to the episodic plots more in the past like Yumi searching for her sister, and occasionally you just get kind of random meetings, like when Kiryu shows up to save Haruka at the manga shop (why was he there?) The problem is, as a fan of the games, I know how all this stuff is supposed to fit together from prior knowledge, so I can fill in gaps where need be. But someone who's never played the games I have to imagine would be more confused by some of the jumps. There's some good cinematography and the acting seems strong enough. I DO wish they pulled more music from the games though. The LAD soundtracks are absolute fire, and it's one of the most transferable elements.
I have to say, the last two episodes were great! But the first three really missed the mark. This could be a solid Yakuza show on its own, but it doesn’t capture the feel of the Yakuza game we love. "Leave the multibillion dollar company alone"
@@aronsurakh1747 No they didn't. They watched the dubbed version.
@@Melonposting Truth hurts, don't it? Come up with a better retort.
@@ROJM-cc1gp watching with english dub sucks; japanese with subs - also sucks; spanish versions, guess what - sucks; russian version brings nostalgia as if it was some old VHS movie, but still sucks. I literally tried everything at this point, except chinese and polish, because they almost always are pretty bad, probably would ruin the show even more so i didnt bother. other languages are beyond my capabilities. what im saying is - voice acting is not the problem here, it's simply a bad show for me and for many others. but yes english version was probably the most awful one that i have watched.

@@SS801. Thank you! I had to watch the episodes multiple times to understand the different direction of the adaptation. It's weird at first as a fan but if you see if differently you'll understand more.
@@SS801. Yokoyama-san even made a statement about the adaptation x.com/Carrie1138/status/1848350435125445029?t=80y0QR073cTvwqcPm_sFgw&s=19
your joking right
I haven't watched it yet, but this was going to always do poor with IGN as its not about "empowering fringe groups"
If kiryu isn't doing random bullshit like bowling, gotcha games, or meeting unique characters thats not the dragon of dojima. Soo if it doesn't have stuff like that I'm not watching it

You didn't have time to watch it
