How to make your character designs more interesting

- I regularly do viewer critiques on my stream at / pikat , so let's see if they can become helpful videos too! I try to improve this character design by adjust the overall drawing, as well as being more thoughtful in some of the design decisions.

really like how this video can basically be summed up as "have good fundamentals --> Win"

That is the whole point, and it's fun seeing what we "think" we know, verses what we "need" to know. It's refreshing.
0:52 i dont know how or why, but felt a new brain wrinkle form when i saw this. You managed to simplify perspective on the human body to much so that i was able to finally get a grasp of it after years of struggling, so thanks a lot pikat
honestly this is such an underrated channel, its legit perfect for me
I think another thing that could have been adjusted are the colours because most of them looked relativley the same except for the hair, horns and tail.
The original pose had more energy and made the overall shape more interesting and I prefere the bare feet, makes him more animalistic. The rest was nice.
I feel like it's been difficult to find good art critiques recently. One that is kind, thoughtful, and not completely drowning in bias. I really like this one because you managed to make the character feel like themself while also being more polished. All your advice was very useful, as well, and was worded in a way that's unlikely to confuse or mislead new artists. Good video and good critique :)
I really love how you critique character design without 'Roasting' them! I know a lot of people like the roast approach for comedic purposes but this truly ads so much more value to the advice! ❤we need more people like this!

I love seeing people's OCs but I can't make one myself. I always get washed over with a wave of cringe and I can't help it😭
Probably just have fun! Think, why would you do this oc? Possible comic/manga/book/novel? An alternate you in x w z universe? Do it just for you; you don't even have to post anywhere, if you want to try it. Hope this helps ✨ (in my experience, just doing as a sketch and then flesh it a bit a time without posting at first helps with that cringe feeling)

Those simple and short tips/reasons for adding or changing x part of this design did more to help me understand character design than some other lengthier in-depth videos i've tried watching about character design (and perspective) xD. Will definitely sub and check out your other videos.

This is awesome! Love videos like this, character design is so interesting to me. You can really see how you took the essence of the design and 'amped it up' in a way, it was already really cool but it's defo even more interesting by the end. Thanks for such a neat video, I hope you do more!

Holy smokes, you did amazingly. I really loved how you did all that with what is effectively sketching but it's still such a solid design transformation. I think I would actually pay money to commission you for a service like this.
Also, yeah, that design has an amazing base. Lot of muted and earth-y colours, with even the bluish hair and yellow eyes looking a bit stained, and then you have these sharp magenta demonic parts that stand out amazingly from that.

I am very glad to see this become a little series sort of thing. A really rad character design too from Yodogama (wonderful name and I'm assuming Monster Hunter reference)
Although the one thing I think could be critiqued a little more on the design is I was genuinely a little shocked when I heard that it was set in a sci-fi and futuristic setting. It looks more fantasy with modern elements. Which maybe that is intentional in the overall story or setting, maybe the demon world is more fantasy and less advanced? But I feel like incorporating even something small that really does add a futuristic or sci-fi vibe to it would help communicate that.
Edit: I felt like I should add a suggestion/idea and not just a minor critique. Maybe make the arrow on the hood have a neon glow?

I do think the outstretched arm pose has more action to it, making it look like he is unscrolling the map.
but it doesn't make sense to have the arm have "action" while the rest of the body is stationary. it looks completely wrong 😅
@@suu1998to me, it would be one of those situations where you could ignore reality for the sake of aesthetics. The critique was incredible but that was the one thing I felt was another posing option instead of an improvement.

I never understood why i couldnt figure out how to do a top down perspective until you said the word vanishing point. How did i never figure that out before. Thank you for that!

I feel like a lot of the video can be summed up as "be deliberate", I'm not gonna come here and say that you should be able to tell what the character's all about when looking at them, but you should be able to feel like the design reflects what the character is about, basically, when you tell me the character's supposed to be an artist, I should feel like: "yeah, I can see that."

PIKAT I just stalked you for a second and on instagram and saw you were a software engineer and your now into art. Just wanted to say that is pretty cool. Im torn between learning programming or learning how to draw to become a storyboard artist. Both seem interesting so its cool to see you did both and i dont really need to drop one or the other.
