My dad had a Freelander 2 for years, so I've got a soft spot for them. I just wish the boot was a little bigger. Also just to say.. I watch alot of automotive TH-camrs and they all advertise car vertical. I think your integrations are the best in the game. It's become part of your format, checking the history of a cheap car you just bought.. so it doesn't feel like it's advertising. Very tidy and clever.
If it does not consume coolant, it can also be a badly clogged heater core. The lack of mayonnaise in the oil, normal coolant levels and normal engine power indicate that the engine could be fine.

Have you seen the comment above? 😅 An opinion Vs your factual experience. My FL2 has also been absolutely fine, aside from the door motor going on strike occasionally. And the clock spring. And the... Nah that's it. I'm chuffed with it.
I bought a FL2 recently, partly because of your videos on this car, and I absolutely love it! Paid 4.2k for a 2010 model. First 4x4 I've had and certainly not the last.
My mate had 2 of these had the same problem as this one and turned out to be thermostat problem the water system was airlocked that's why his heater never worked put thermostat in em and he had 3years trouble free miles so check it out first matt 👍
I had a 2007 Freelander 2 HSE for 115k miles over 10 years. Never let me down and only repair cost was a clutch and a few door locks. We enjoyed lots of trips around Europe to visit the alps. Great car, the secret is to keep them regularly serviced. 36mpg and great on tyres and enjoyable to drive. Paint and interior was mint when I sold it after a hard life regularly moving PA and lighting gear - they clean up well.
I bought a 2010 salvage LR2 with a 3.2 litre V6. 209,000 km. It was in beautiful shape and ran perfectly. I loved that car. Unfortunately, it got hit from behind on the highway and was written off although it was only slightly damaged. I bought a 2015 LR4 which is an outstanding car with 66000 miles on it. Perfect so far.
best small SUV that LR has made. most LR are now over complex and expensive. I have a Series 3 LR and it is the exact opposite, simple and agricultural. the FL II was a happy medium and in HSE spec is very comfy for long trips.
No, if heater isnt warm that has nothing to do with head gasket , it's a flow issue if the system isn't pressurising you won't have power. Try some sealer. Could be a stuck thermostat or clogged radiator. It's probably not a head gasket, because you drove it haha. If it had a bad gasket it would have low compression and gutless
I agree with this. Potentially a water pump. Compression test first... if that passes without symptoms then a leak-down test. You can feel the temperature of the hoses in and out of the pump to see if hot coolant is getting around the system. Just see where the cold hose is and you know it is the bit before that which has failed.
I work at a builders merchant acting as transport manager and we had a suspected head gasket failure (examined by an independent garage). We then took it to a main dealer which said the same and quoted around £13,000 for an engine replacement. We sold the van for £2500 and later heard the issue was a heat pump. The vehicle was later sold again to someone else for £9000
Matt, have you changed something with the audio or used some kind of noise reduction to eliminate background noise or a different mic? The audio sounds a bit muffled when it's usually spot on
Matt, I deliver RR's for JLR, and that beeping which will be driving you mad is that new EU thing that says every new car has to have that system installed, which tells you every time you enter a new speed limit, and beeps when you break it! Anyway, to turn it off, on the steering wheel, you'll find a symbol on the left hand side, looks like a white circle with a car inside it. Press that 3 times every time you start the vehicle (as it defaults when started to "high" level) and put it in "low". That should shut it up by 95%. It also turns off the lane assist which is also annoying. If you press that same button twice, it'll be in "Custom" and you can adjust the settings in the infotainment screen to suit. Hope that helps.
We bought an FL2 new in 2010 and we have still have it. It's now done 120k and other than brakes and service parts, its had one steering lock unit, a wheel bearing and a couple of door locks. It can tow up to 2t and is magnificent with the horse box on the back whilst delivering decent mpg. It has been really cheap motoring for us. We have looked to change it a couple of times but just can't find anything comparable that isn't way too big or has a chocolate engine. Don't knock them unless you have owned one.
Have my 2014 Freelander 2 nearly 7 years now Really great practical and reliable 4x4. Cant believe you paid just £300 for this Autoglass replaced my windscreen and broke my driver's door mirror in the process. The new mirror from Landrover cost over £400 😮
I have always found the shape of this particular model to be the most beautiful than ALL others, including all the news ones! Beautiful colour and in pretty good shape. Even if someone spends £1500 on it, it's still a good value.
Hi Matt, I have the 2010 HSE and love it, always look forward to driving it... I was going to lease the Merc GLA but wasn't impressed on the test drive so opted for the LR. Great upload buy and content.... !!

These are good cars because they're Volvo XC60s!! I find myself liking them more and more. If only they had put in the 3.0 Volvo T6 engine, not just the dozy 3.2 (which is at least quite durable).
I always enjoy your reviews Matt, you come across very honest and genuine, not something a lot of car dealers inspire in people. My only thing that I have an issue with is the Car vertical bit every time, I appreciate you do it for a reason, but I always fast forward through it now.
Wow looks amazing inside , these have such a good rep yes hard to believe it a LR with a good rep 😂, love to have a future update on this and like you said worth spending the money on doing the engine up
I also bought a Freelander 2 in July. 2.2 HSE 2012. I’ve already done 3000 miles. Last weekend I took it to the Yorkshire hill rally to use as a safety radio car and had to go off road in deep mud and ruts. It absolutely walked it. And that was on normal road tyres. I’m pretty sure that once the engine is sorted on Matts FL2 it will be really reliable
as someone from Turkey this seems like a dream to me. that car is 20k eur in my country because of taxes. i would buy this just to play need for speed in the backseat.
You’ve got a lot to answer to Mr High Peak 😂 All these LR vids…. Caused me to go out and buy a 2017 RRS Autobiography 😮 I bloody love it 🤭 Nice one chap
These 2.2 Peugeot engines suffer from EGR cooler failure, cracked cylinder heads, failed thermostat housings and blown head gaskets, so hard to say what could be wrong with it really without getting your mechanic to have a good look over it, but after the S Class video where they said the wiring loom was full of oil and needed replacing when it was just a stuck swirl flap, I would be careful! That engine sounds AWFUL though, as if it's down on compression and dumping fuel in to compensate, or it's got worn injectors which is another common problem with these.
Hi Mat, I have three of these. The Key modules fail, but, an old battery will give faults and communication issues. My 2009 model, has had front and rear diffs rebuilt, due to a jammed handbrake one side. The tyres have to all have equal tread depth to stop the diff problems. Overheating could be also be a failed heater matrix.
Had one of these, on a 2009 GS manual, with 109k on it. All that went wrong apart from brakes etc was a throttle body which I replaced myself and a drivers side front bearing. 2009 was the last year you could blank the EGR off without a light coming on. Mapped it, and it ran like a dream. Can recommend these to anyone, they pull like a train.
Matt, I bought my Golf 1.9SDI 2001 about 4 years ago for £265 with a knackered clutch, it was down in Devon. Paid a local garage to put a new clutch in and change oil and filter and off I went back to Brum. It has just cost me £700 at MOT time, massive overspend. However it is ultra reliable, does 68mpg on a run and is like an old friend. So rest assured you're not the only massive overspender out there.
I am still after a FL2 HSE mate, I was just about to say I'll take it off your hands. Please if you find another like this give me a shout Matt. Cheers. Good viewing as per.
HSE Wheels, 14 speaker Alpine gear. Worth a grand in pieces. Hell, you'd get that for the gearbox. I need either a powerflush or a Torque converter in mine Steering lock is a common fault. You can either have it replaced or the more common fix seems to be an emulator
14:20 Matt, a lot of JLR stuff had "fake" temperature gauges. They went straight to "normal" (from a short time at "cold") unless there was a problem when they would go straight to "maximum hot".
If it’s had a belt and they did the water pump at the same time, I’d be looking at that. The specialist I used (and he really was a specialist-he knew every inch of these inside out) to do my belt refused to change the pump as he said aftermarket ones were always troublesome. He said the original pumps never fail, so left the old one in. Worth a check.
Can we have an update when it's fixed? Maybe do an update episode where you go through a number of cars you have shown in the past - did they sell, did they break down after sale and you had to scrap or are they still going with delighted owners!
Don't assume it is the head gasket. If the coolant system is not pressurized, eg faulty filler cap, it will boil at 100 deg instead of 130 deg. Obviously it is much more likely to be the head gasket but you never know!
Head gaskets... it costs £800 to replace a £30 part and takes 8 hours labour, which is less than 4% of the cost of the part. 😬 1:31 on my car I was convinced it was the head gasket, because after driving a mile then going slow (McDonald's Drive Thru one mile away) that's when it stunk of oil with the blowers on, but it was the power steering fluid leaking out and burning off. It was a relatively cheap fix. Since then the stink has been there a few times and I am sure it's the head gasket. It's more than the car is worth. 😂
So glad its found a worthy home. Thoroughly enjoyable content as always - even my girlfriend enjoys your videos although I think it's your Tin Tin hair really....;)

What a bargain, and certainly worth saving, what's even better Matt, you didn't even come close to an overspend, and not even a new set of plates (must be a first) 😜.

Is the car beeping because your looking away from the steering wheel? Turn this is off in the settings. Or don't go over the lines in the road. Also turn assist off.👍
great video as always. A compression test will show a leaking head gasket but the JLR 2.2 is very robust as a rule. Also what MIC do you use? you have very little ambient noise - excellent
They don't take that long to warm up generally but that did seem quick. Had a low coolant warning on the MY2011 I own but found that the expansion cap outer rubber seal ring was loose. during the hot weather we had recently. Replaced the cap and topped off coolant and so far so good.
I love seeing old cars saved even Junk like the Freelander should be given a second life. As we switch to an Ev age the more internal combustion stuff saved the better
Hi Matt, these 2.2 are ford engines .Offered greater reliability than the succeeding 2.0L insignium engines Nevertheless you can't go wrong for 300 quid

The Land Rover has been diagnosed by Transformotion Vehicle Rebuilds and it was found that the EGR was the issue.
Turbos can go, or the variable vane but otherwise really good cars. Ours served us well. Better built than the disco sport
Sold my 2008 4 years ago because the rear arches were going. Interesting to see the state of this one.
I haven’t watched it yet, but any video with a Land Rover with the bonnet up in the thumbnail has always got to be good 🤣🤣
Well done Matt another unloved work horse saved will go to a better caring home
great video as always. A compression test will show a leaking head gasket but the JLR 2.2 is very robust as a rule. Also what MIC do you use? you have very little ambient noise - excellent
You mean PSA 2.2 HDI
They don't take that long to warm up generally but that did seem quick.
Had a low coolant warning on the MY2011 I own but found that the expansion cap outer rubber seal ring was loose. during the hot weather we had recently. Replaced the cap and topped off coolant and so far so good.
I love seeing old cars saved even Junk like the Freelander should be given a second life. As we switch to an Ev age the more internal combustion stuff saved the better
Amazing how you manage to get a Phonenix Nights ref into a car revue, classic
Hi Matt, these 2.2 are ford engines .Offered greater reliability than the succeeding 2.0L insignium engines Nevertheless you can't go wrong for 300 quid
Freelander’s actually have a Peugeot 2.2 HDI engines. Only the Defender has the Ford 2.2 Puma engine.
It's the same engine as far as I'm aware@@cmagennis927
It’s a Peugeot engine mate…
300 quid and in my favourite colour and with my favourite interior damn I'd love a motor like that even if you spent 1500 on it you would still have a awesome car a good looking one at that thanks for saving her.
This is exactly what I need here in Barbados to take to the beach and not worry about it at the supermarket. Bring it over, Mat!!
Thank you for saving a baby Land-rover, you’ll go to heaven for that save!
Yes Ste, keep it going! Can't lose really
Please give us an update on the car if you get it fixed
I had the old 2004 k-series up until 2021.... besides the head getting replaced back in 2007.... rust was the main issue.
Two weeks ago i bought 08 plate for £350 HSE top of the spec.
Steve has got a barging. You're a good chap Matt!
