It’s public property as it is paid for by the public. You can ask but I don’t have to tell you. His concerns do not trump your rights. I do love your ID.

The police are far from perfect, but everybody will need them at some point in life. If you ever are a victim of crime, I’m sure you’d expect the police to treat everybody as a suspect until the person is found. And I’m sure if they let everybody go with out even asking for ID and god forbid the offender got away you’d hold it against them for eternity. Providing I've done nothing wrong it really infuriates cops when you don't call em by their rank cause to me rank is military term or when I refer them as constable instead of officer or police.
