      And I'm sure Julia has forgotten more art theory than I've ever learned about biological / taxonomic theory in my brief exposures to it. Society really is full of highly specialized disciplines, and if you find a niche that works for you, no need to stress your body trying to eat things outside that niche. Like the koala learning how to survive on eucalyptus leaves, a food source incredibly plentiful because no other species has evolved to eat them.

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese ปีที่แล้ว +12

      "Fish" has no real biological definition. It's just a culinary term/cultural construct, same as "vegetable"
      Edit: In this and the other nearby thread where I also mentioned it, I spoke in a very oversimplified way (and my understanding of this is relatively simplified to begin with; I'm an anatomy/phys geek, I don't truly love evo-devo, I just like looking at its butt as it walks by), just because I think it's a fun topic to share about. Please look into more expert comments in the replies and look into the topic independently for a better understanding!

    • @MagnaFae
      @MagnaFae ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@ItsAsparageese Valid. I was referring to eels as bony fish, distinct from cartilaginous fish like sharks. They’re all Chordates, and most certainly not in the same phylum as the worms in Nematoda, Annelida, etc. (edited for spelling)

      There is no actual scientific definition of "fish". So anything and nothing is a fish lol. It's just a culinary term and a construct, same as "vegetables"
      Edit: I had just woken up and worded this extremely oversimplifiedly (not to mention my understanding of it is pretty simplified in the first place), so please see the rest of the thread (and look into it independently) for better expansion on the subject!

    • @EmilySmirleGURPS

      @@ItsAsparageese There absolutely is a scientific definition of "fish" - multiple definitions! Taxa of exclusion aren't the best for cladistics but they're still useful, and the cladistic definition is precise, but often not useful in general conversation.

    "[the writer of this sentence] is not a person". Actually, the FAQ on the page for that generator claims the person/people who made it were disappointed with their attempts at an actual sentence-constructing algorithm so just made it pick from countless prewritten sentences that they wrote. Having played around with it a bit, I have seen identical sentences pop up more than once, and on one occasion, a sentence where the writer lamented that coming up with tons of random sentences was a more difficult task than they anticipated. Its quite admirable how much dedication they must've had in order to come up with goodness knows how many bizarre sentences.

      It’s basically fear of the unknown. Like, literal meaning; eldritch means unknowable or esoteric, horror is, well, self explanatory.
      If you want to take it back further than when Lovecraft and Weird Horror magazine appropriated the word eldritch, think like Erlking, Formian or Fairfolk. Fae creature from Arthurian myth sort of stuff. It was applied to sea creatures because Lovecraft was terrified of them and it was applied to druids because Lovecraft was terrified of them and it was applied to minorities because Lovecraft was racist.
      And most modern takes on it are derived from him because he had a thesaurus and brought back a bunch of old words into his writing which now are associated with his stories and works instead of their original and intended meanings. Eldritch, gibbous, vizard, etc.

    I'm an Australian, and according to my grandma (who tells a lot of stories so take this with a grain of salt) I'm related to the guy who named spiders spiders. According to legend, he owned a milk bar (idk if you have them in Yankee land but they're a small shop that sells lollies and soft drink and pies and kind of everything, the idea being that you can drop into your local milk bar instead of going to the supermarket) and he had big vats of ice cream, only sometimes a spider would get into the ice cream, I guess because of the sugar? So he couldn't sell it in a cone but instead sold it at a discounted price mixed with soft drink in a glass. We also don't have root beer here, unless you're at a place that sells American stuff, so spiders are made with regular soft drink- in my opinion the lime spider is king, but other popular choices are raspberry, orange or creaming soda. Thank you for coming to my Ted talk

    I've been trying a lot of root beer brands lately, mainly because there's so much variation in the flavors. Some brands are all "we used extra vanilla and some honey", while other brands just get creative with throwing any kind of stank-ass root in there, from birch and acacia to licorice.
    I assume that an old-fashioned root beer float would probably use one of the stronger, more bitter flavors to contrast with the sweetness of the ice cream. Maybe even the flavor would be stronger with the idea that people who just wanted to drink it could get it more diluted by the manual soda fountain
