In this week's Steal like an Artist video, I tried to recreate the work by the amazing ceramic artist Jeff Rubio. This was one of the most tedious, but also most fun projects I've made in a while, and I am obsessed with the result!

I love these ridiculous, silly, wonderful, charming art projects. Giant bead lizard! Yeah!
Oh, they do look like cheerios... they do... big round clay cheerios...
thank you! It was so fun to make :)
I love the whimsy of it. 😊
You could even say it's outrageous *wink wink* (iykyk)
@@kappagrapes DONT EAT THEM! 😂
The short tail is thematic, lizards frequently lose part of their tail as an escape strategy and will regrow the tail or just heal up and go about their lizard life.
It never quite grows back to its original size either! So the short tail works on all fronts :]
hahah genius!
My cat brings me lizard tails regularly.
@@pineapplesyumyum that is so interesting where do you live?
@@leahjean7783ummmmmmmmmmm creepy? /j
It's okay if your beads aren't regular, seed beads usually aren't (they're not even "square", they're usually less high than they're wide), unless you go for brand ones where they take a lot of pain to make the beads even. But regular cheap seed beads often vary in width and height, so that makes yours closer to the real thing in a way xD
What a fun project 😊
I was thinking the same, and when I was a kid I didn’t even care about the size regularity. It gives it its charm!
These are usually made with pony beads. Not seed beads. But now I want to see a tiny one made of seed beads!! How cute that would be ❤
Yeah these are made with pony beads as the person above me said which are moulded plastic so they’re usually pretty even. Making these things with different size beads makes it really wonky. As they mentioned in the video casting them would probably be better for a cleaner result. But it’s still very cool and unique!
@@Tastykake83 I've made a couple with seed beads, they come out roughly the size of the top segment of my pinky finger, if not a touch smaller! (Used hand-quilting thread and the thinnest bead needles I could find for stringing)
I'm suddenly FURIOUS I've not seen this done before. Why haven't giant bead lizards been ubiquitous since...always?!
people make them with cut up pool noodles as floaties also
@@allana1997 oh my god that sounds like so much fun
@@allana1997people have also crocheted them
@@allana1997omg I NEED to do that :P
Yall need to stop with the confusing words 😭😭 ubiquitous WHAT IS THAT
This concept makes me so happy!! My mom is a ceramic artist and I grew up going to her studio, which was connected to a beading studio. I made a lot of these lizards in that time and always associate them with ceramics!! You really brought me back to my childhood 🥰
ok your childhood sounds MAGICAL! ✨
From your childhood to her wheel!
For some reason, seeing the thumbnail i assumed the beads were just solid clay with the hole in the middle - seeing you shape them so they're hollow on the inside makes so much more sense 🤦🏼♀️
The lizard turned out so cute!! There's something about making 'kid craft' things but in like,,, professional and BIG. I loved watching the process
Honestly. single beads of the yellow/green or red (or a drippy brown over red) could be a fabulous "caramel apple" art piece in itself. The sticks could be ceramic pieces of their own, maybe unglazed, or raku carbon-black?
Exactly my thought , they are very decorative just by themselves
yessss, I saw the beads getting dipped into the glaze and it really looked like a candy apple. If you keep the middle hollow but add clay at the base it could be a candy apple vase, but you flowers become the stem of the apple.
@@natalieo7539 That sounds amazing honestly, such a good idea
0:08 *beaded lizard* proceeds to show a possum in one of the pictures
Loll
Possums are lizards confirmed.
its the same stitch so its included
Possums are lizards if they were mamals
or is it a mouse?
I love the steal like an artist mentality. It’s so challenging trying to learn new techniques on your own, but taking inspiration from other artisans makes it so much easier and more fun!
Thank you for these videos!!!
just make sure to credit them and then its all good
I saw the title and I was : HECK YES
Edit after finishing the video: The big guy ended up adorable! The regular Kandi Beads are actually irregular too thats why its just perfectly fitting that they are slightly different sizes. Im curious to see how you get them on a wall lul, I think Burrito wrapping or putting him in a 60 l tub could help getting him into the final room.
Also would love to see a video about the Room restructuring and organizing. As a crafter its always interesting to see how other people organize their spaces even if I dont do the same craft
Thank you! I will definitely share the glaze room makeover then :) He is still sitting on my floor lol idk what I will do with it!
@@PotterytothePeople As a neurodivergent person I would just play by spinning the beads. Wasnt your bedroom quiet empty? Maybe he can sit there ? Maybe draped over a cabinet
@@PotterytothePeople do you have a skateboard you could lay it on top of to move into another room?
I make kandi and pony beads are moulded plastic so they’re really not that irregular. Seed beads which are the tiny glass ones are, but the plastic pony beads really aren’t. They’re specific millimetres and they tend to stay around that. Any differences would be extremely subtle. There’s really no visual size difference. If you’ve ever tried making kandi with different sized beads you’ll see it gets really wonky. When you increase the size the variation actually becomes less than it would if they were that different in small form.
I actually think that the first bead you did had really good proportions. The beads used are pony beads and they are wider than they are tall
That’s what i was thinking!!!
i'm scared because literally 10 minutes before this popped up on my feed, i had an unprompted conversation about these guys with friends on discord. LIKE 10 MINUTES BEFORE THIS SHOWED UP. AFTER A DECADE OR MORE OF NOT THINKING ABOUT THEM
It’s just ur brain looking for patterns and scaring yourself
I mean- social medias can sometimes (I believe) record/listen to you for marketing. Saw someone open TikTok, normal feed. Turns off the phone and talks about how much he loves orange cats for ten minutes. He opens TikTok again to see ORANGE CATS GALORE. 🙃
The slightly irregular sizing is actually making it way cooler to me! I love seeing the hallmarks of handmade things.
This is hitting a nostalgic note for me so hard 😂❤
I love this so much. He looks like he would be a lovely garden ornament actually
nice idea! 😄 I am still wondering what to do with it haha
The way I could NOT. STOP. GRINNING. When you started stringing all the beads together. This is precious.
4:48 I like how she starts explaining how she does it like we’re gonna make a giant bead❤
LMAO its the effort that sounds
LMAO its the effort that sounds

I love videos about organization and workspace design, I'd love to see you reorganize your space!
Great! I will start filming a video about it next week I think!
The sounds when they clank together is so satisfying omg
I love these! Artists have been copying others to learn technique for hundreds of years. This is such a great idea. On the point about organization, I'd love to see it because I'm always looking for ideas. If you're looking for artists, I really love Faunwood. She makes fantastical creatures and does some interesting glazes patterns.
ooh I will look her up, thanks!
12:52 My mind was already thinking about donuts from the point when she was putting the beads in the kiln, so when "they look good" appeared on the, my first understanding of "good" was tasty. 😂
You overcame every obstacle like a champ. Call it the Magdeburg Monster. 😮
thank you! ❤️
This threw me back to my childhood instantly! So many good memories. I love that you're show casing all of these amazing artists and putting your own spin on things.
Thank you! It is so much fun 🥰
17:43 I WOULD LOVE A SPACE TRANSFORMATION VIDEO
Damn this is the kind of silly modern art project i would love to see in a gallery! Great job!
omg what a big guy! Can't wait to find out where he ends up living. You'll have to give him a name!
Please do the video about organization in your space!
will do! ❤️
The irregularities make it more true to the cheap little beans I used as a kid. at least you didn't leave sharp edges sticking out of the seams. (in regards to what you said at 12 minutes in)
The pokey seams are horrible 😭 I make kandi and I recently found a cheap brand but they have the smoothest beads ever it’s so nice
2:50 forbidden donuts 😜🥲
Would love the organization video you were talking about!
Coming soon!
Such a perfect lizard!
I think "stealing" from another artist is never really stealing. Every artist has a different style and their own way of creating things. You could invite one artist to steal from and who gives 10 other artist a step by step instructions how to copy a chosen artwork. At the end you will have 10 different results. Similar but different.
Do you know these "Artnights"? Several people meet to repaint one picture. All are given the same colours, the same brushes, tools... And there is one person giving clear instructions. Which colours to use, where to paint, what to paint.... In the end there are all different. Same motif but different pictures. So, go on "stealing" and discover new techniques! ❤
Loved this crazy project! Now where and HOW will you hang the lizard? I was thinking it might be a patio piece? Such a great series.
It was great to see you trying to problem solve throughout this video. It’s reassuring to see that you can’t plan for everything and not everything you plan for works out. YES please, to the organisational video! Thanks for sharing so generously.
My pottery class has a mini wheel, so now I'm tempted to make a very small version of this! I love him so much! I can't wait to see where he goes and what you do next! :)
I love how much fun you have with pottery and don't just focus on production efficiency, making money etc. I strive for the same!
I randomly got one of your videos recommended like two weeks ago and I've now binged all of your pottery throwdown episodes and am working my way through your backlog. It's so nice to see an artist joyful and experimental in their work and I find it very inspirational! This lizard is super cute btw. I hope you do more pottery throwdown episodes, they are my favorites :)
I had completely forgotten about bead lizards and now I want to make one haha
I think the trimmed beads all looked different because it's super easy to pick out variation on simple shapes under uniform light. My guess is they will look more similar once they get glazed, even though it is counter intuitive.
23:42 The beads sound like the memorys from Inside Out 😀
I've made lizards with giant beads before (though not beads I made myself, which is SO MUCH COOLER!!!) and I braided thinner cord to get the rope diameter I needed. It used a large quantity, but it made the whole thing so much sturdier that it was worth it.
Smart! What material were the beads?
@@PotterytothePeople They were some kind of rubber. I think they were originally meant to be connecting toys for a little kid, but I found a lot of them at a yard sale and was inspired *grin*
I would love to see an organization video! They are so inspirational for art space ideas!
Oh this is excellent! You did such great work. I’d love to see an update of it hanging on your wall.
This giant bead lizard inspired me - not in ceramics, or a giant project, but to dig out my old seed beads and make myself some tiny bead lizard earrings. The size variation that the ceramic beads came out with was what really got me thinking about it, since seed beads have a surprising amount of size variation too. At such a tiny scale, a fraction of a millimetre can be a huge difference!
i love it! your videos always make me smile
I want a sequel video - how in the world did you hang that much weight on your wall?
Love this!!! Would love to see a video of you organizing your studio too.
Yay, good to know! 😄
Ok so hear me out.. this project.. but with cut up pool noodles and you got yourself a lizard keychain floaty 👀 ⁉️
The kandi kid in me is SCREAAAMING this is AWESOME!! ^_^
RIGHTT
I would love to see an organization video. I don't do pottery, but I do arts and crafts, and I need better organization for my stuff.
Ah yes, the bead lizard- best of the best crafty crafts.
When you buy beads for crafting they are typically irregular so anything minor from bead to bead will actually make it more realistic.
I'm at 11:44 and very much enjoying watching the process.
This lizard is so nostalgic for me, wow! Now I kinda wanna explore the beaded animals of my past again lol
Excellent work as always!
OMG!❤ blast from the past!
Thanks for the memories 😊
This is the CUTEST THING I’ve ever seen made out of clay, kudos to you for sitting down and doing all that work!
Congrats on 100K!!!! Love your content and your personality!!
21:47 ah yes the little fairy making a normal sized geko 😂
this project is so nostalgic - I love it. keep up the great work, and YES please show us your studio organization ideas :) I think it would make a great video!
would love to see a video of how you organize your space!!
I love this series SO MUCH! Drawback to this week's video: now I really want a donut xD when you threw them, they looked sooo - äh, lecker
hahah now I do toooo
@@PotterytothePeople oh no :D after all that work, you certainly deserve some :) it turned out so cute!
I really like this series because, as a layperson, I see these amazing works of pottery on social media and I'm like "cool!" but I don't really understand the intricacies and difficulties of how to actually execute the vision. So seeing you break them down and try to copy them is really interesting!
I am such a fan of this silly little (not little) guy ❤️ you did an excellent job !!
I have one of these from my great grandma. She passed away but loved kids and teaching. I somehow got one of her bead lizards and seeing this video reminded me of her. She passed away this year and she was 98, rip tutu
I’ve never scored the closure of a torus. Great project, I might have to try on a smaller scale.
The outcome is absolutely amazing!😍 Can't believe some people have that much patience for such projects, but it's 100% worth it!❤
This is amazing but I'd love to see it on your wall like you said you wanted it to be for. Congrats on your 100k subs too
This is by far, one of my favourite series! I can't wait to see who the next artist in the series will be ❤
Thank you for taking us on this journey with you! As a child I had a little beading kit for these things and this hit me with a lot of nostalgia.
god
this is honestly so amazing, because i HAVE a similar lizard and i just got back to making animals out of beads, this video couldn't have been timed better
18:27 forbidden donuts 🍩🍩
this is so awesome omg
What a throwback. I used be obsessed with making bead animals. And what a fun project!
this is so sick! I'm working on a similar project in crochet - well, I *say* 'working' 😅 - but I love the bead lizard revival!!
ETA: I wouldn't worry about how similar the beads are in any project like this; take a look at some pony beads sometime and you'll see that they're no more uniform than these clay ones (or my crochet ones, lol)
haha that's good to know! I'd love to see your crochet project!
12:56 the soundssss!
23:26 "Now what???" LMAO
THAT LOOKS SO STRESSFUL I COULD NEVER 😭 (its so cute though)
She sheer size and weight of it makes me think it would be safer on the floor. He could make a cool lawn or garden ornament.
My sister used to make a bunch of these when we were kids! I sent her this video and now she and her kids are having a craft day.
I'd like to see some videos about casting
I have only verrry limited experience with casting, but it's something I'd also like to learn more about!
OMG i remember making these as a kid!! So creative to make a giant version of it ❤ i love it.
Depending on how stiff the rope you used is, you could’ve added onto it by tying longer pieces onto the ends. I do this all the time with my beaded projects and it works great.
I cannot believe you threw all those beads! That had to have taken forever!
yes! 😅
i made three of these out of normal beads for the shared staff keys at work and i love watching people use them
2 minutes in and im already blown away. Those are hollow!? That is wild, i didn't expect they would be hollow, but it makes sense. Damn, that is awesome.
Edit: HOW FUN! That came out soooo good!
Omg! That was amazing 🤩 loved every second of it.
Once again - I love this series! But what are you meant to do with it - it looks so heavy! Looks amazing.
This is so fun!! I love this project, it so interesting to see this oversized pony bead lizard in ceramic. great job!
Thank you! 😊
Such a playful idea. Thank you for such a massive effort :]
OMG YESSS I WOULD DEF WATCH A LIKE SPACE ORGANIZATION VIDEO WHERE U MAKE IT ALL PRETTY AAA
This is so cute and super nostalgic for me! Though I mostly made snakes, but my sister would make a bunch of lizards. It was such a huge thing when we were kids!
Good to see the process and not knowing everything at start. The finding out as you go-part is very inspiring and fun, so are you!
this was fantastic! I really love watching you problem solve on video, it helps me :D
I would actually recommend using a super heavy duty rope for this, like the kind used on boats. Also, if you want to put it on your wall maybe try attaching it to some kind of backing board. This was really neat and the end result was pretty cool, even if i was terrified that the rope you used was going to snap as you went to move it and makes the beads go flying 😂 very good job!
Honestly MAJOR props for all of this hard work. the result was worth it. I love the colors chosen, and all the beads look so cute and delicious like giant size candy necklace candies lol. I love the video thank you so much for putting in the great effort for an adorable result :D
This is rad, and I'm all for supporting the steal like an artist culture. Ya gotta try stuff, it's the fastest way to grow and a great way to maintain that dopamine through novelty channel!
I keep thinking it would help when mass producing pieces like these to have a curve template you could hold up beside them as you go. If it were some kind of card stock you might even be able to make one for the top for dimensioning as well. However I want to emphasize this is amazing exactly as you did it! Nobody has even made me want to learn pottery more!
I was obsessed with making these because i had a crush on a girl who made them, I still have the one she made for me in the shoebox of supplies. but i was a goofy boy, so i made like mutant lizards, turtles and frogs
that is adorable ❤️
It’s so cute, especially with the little tail!! You did so good!
I have a crochet pattern to make a jumbo one of these! Nostalgic.
This is amazing! I only make miniatures so it was fun to watch you make something giant!
I think its wonderful you honor all the arts buy trying to make there work come to life a different way.
Can anyone explain to me why the beads didn't explode in the kiln? When I took ceramic class as a teen, we were told over and over that trapped air is bad, so I'm very confused how these beads work.
This is insane and I love it so much! Great job
Yes I can't believe I pulled it off! 😅
