    I purchased one of these yesterday along with some other equipment. This will be the first camera! I am excited but nervous to have invested so heavily in something I have minimal practical knowledge of. This video definitely eased some of my anxiety about my decision. I own seven cameras - a Canon EOS 50D, 60D, and 80D, and then a Canon 5D Classic, 5D Mark II, 5D Mark III and an EOS R. Of the three APS-C cameras I have, the 60D is my favorite of the three. There's something charming about that camera. Of course, the 80D is a beast and the 50D is a classic relic from before the 60D/7D lineup split as well. :)

    The 60D is, at least for 'still' photographers, a very acceptable camera. I have owned two, sold one and recently purchased a second for $370(CAD). I also have the T6i and three Nikons including the D7200. The focusing mechanisms have been greatly 'improved' over the years. The T7i has no fewer than 45 cross-point. Now with my Nikon D5100(endowned with just one cross-point) and using 55-300mm nikon lens(not recommended for sport photography), I harvested many great soccer pics.
    So I wonder if the new 'improved' focus mechanisms really are necessary. One Cross-point DSLR vs a 45 Cross-point DSLR.
    Three cheers, though, for the 60D! BTW I took my first photos(with a film camera) in 1953. No auto-focus, manual focusing only, colour only available in the slide format. Now, after some 67 years, I still like the 60D!

      No doubt the 90D is pretty incredible. I personally suggest the 60d to everyone that’s looking for a budget camera or is just starting but I definitely see where for professional work it’s worth the investment. • @rm0924
    @rm0924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's great to hear that there is still so much hype with the Canon 60D which I bought in 2015, a birthday gift to myself. Having a background in IT, I realize that over 90% of people have things (equipment, software, you-name-it) that they only effectively exploit less than 5% of its true capability. With my 60D, I am one of the 90%. However, even with this despicable ability with my 60D, I have outstanding memories of my daughter's graduation in the UK in 2012 and holidays with the family in Span, Australia, and at home (Malaysia) that truly make me believe, that I have yet to exploit the true potential of the camera. As Jacob Bunn recommends, it's not the camera that makes photography, it is we who limit the camera's potential. Cheers

    I have a 50D I bought new way back in 2009 and for stills, it still good and very reliable. The 60D has more mega pixels and can do video, so it is even better. I got a 60D last year for my son whom I would like to encourage to learn photography. Tried it before giving it to him and did all the phases with it. My conclusion, all that you say in this video is accurate. It is still a very good camera even for 2020 standards. All you need to learn are the basics of photography, i.e., the relationship of aperture, shutter speed, and ISO with some compositional techniques and you can produce remarkable pictures at this day and age with your gear.

    Great to see someone still going strong w/ a 60D amongst all the new, advanced, and better gear all around us today. Got my 60D in 2010 for $999 body only (after a $100 rebate) & had been my main camera until I got a used 5Dii & a used 80D last year. Loved that it had an articulating screen & could take video. Had a 2nd 60D body that I gave to my son upon acquiring the above. Used the 60D's in many paid gigs for both photo & video, usually w/ a Canon 24-105 f4.0 L and/or a Sigma 18-50mm f2.8 (first version) on them. Accdg to Magic Lantern in the trusty old original 60D I have left, I've logged 354,000 shutter counts (185,106 photos & 168,478 Live View actuations!!!) so it's been used and abused. But, hey, it's still running pretty good, except that the wheel on top near the shutter button sometimes doesn't engage properly when turning it. (In the first year I got it, I had to send it in to repair a faulty shutter, but after that I only had the problem w/ the wheel.) The only thing about the 60D for video work, besides the lack of continuous AF & 4K, is the lack of headphone jack. I once was covering an interview in the Phil. of a victim of Supertyphoon Haiyan (aka Yolanda) but there was a problem w/ the audio and didn't get to record her dramatic and very sad story in her own voice. :(

      Really appreciate you sharing your experience with the 60d. I’ve done the same using it for photo and video jobs, it’s crazy how much you can do with the camera. I’ll have to look at those lenses for sure, I think personally I’m at the point where I need to start getting better lenses on the camera. That’s really rough about the lost audio, it sounded like an incredible moment to capture.

      I don't use auto focus unless absolutely necessary. I rely mostly on manual focus. Actually, most of my videos are now filmed with vintage lenses (I just love the look of vintage glass), so I don't have the option for auto focus.
      I've had so many issues using continuous auto focus on other cameras, I'm actually glad I don't have that option. I know with manual, it's set and it won't change mid shoot.

    Agree 100% I actually sold my 4K mirrorless camera for the 80D. I much prefer Canon the user interface beats Sony. I also work in post production and see first hand yes 4K is the standard in terms of work flow but let’s face it people watch videos on their phones... I wouldn’t worry about having a 4K only work flow in 2020 or even beyond that for the next few years. Focus on the skills and learn the camera !

      Thanks for the input man that’s actually interesting to hear! I was considering giving the Sony A7iii a try but wasn’t sure about how I’d like to switch from canon. Yeah I’ve been surprised by how slowly 4K is being pushed out, so many movies and cameras have it but the industry as a whole doesn’t seem to want to jump over fully yet.

    well...
    Give your usage (mainly non action photos and 1080p 30fps vids) i would suggest anybody to get a T3i, which is a 60D but with slower burst, less buffer and slightly entry-level controls BUT same sensor, same image quality and it is the prime compatible-body to use with magic lantern, a firmware that will improve video experience a lot. T3i its from same year and a little cheaper
    On the other hand, T5i will be about the same as 60D (including comparable decent burst mode and buffer) but also with continuous AF for video mode, which allows for videoshoots on the move. T5i its 2 years newer and a more mature aproach on the 18mpx sensor, that's why despite not having pro controls it could be a better buy overall for about the same price.
    T6i / T7i (and 77D) are just another league, all 3 with video continuous AF, later 2 with dual pixel, 1080p 60fps and 24mpx CMOS sensor. they are plain better for both video and photo, but they come at a higher price of course.
    Not to mention 70D and 80D... these are just their successors and everything is better with no drawbacks except price.
    So i do not agree with you, for your usage (mix of pic and vid) Canon has better choices even in the 2nd hand market like T5i and T6i.
    The niche place in which 60D its still very good its in at budget "photo only" pro (or semi pro) scenario. 18mpx its ok (still suited for semi-pro usage while keeping files relatively low in size) and that camera has everything it needs: good image quality, good burst mode, "mediocre" but usable AF (9 cross points its sub-par at least in 2020) at a low cost and relatively small size. So you can do any (and i really mean ANY) type of photo whitout having to take care of the camera being the limiting factor if you know your job

    • @thejacobbunn
      @thejacobbunn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Juan I honestly appreciate how much thought and information you put into this comment, you do bring up some valid points and very solid alternatives. I do think based on my experience with the 60D it is a good fit for my needs and is why I suggest it to people with similar needs, but with that said you're definitely right that beyond budget it's by far not the go to camera. Again though I appreciate you sharing with others and if I make a follow up I'll be sure to mention some alternatives

    I have 600D and despite some more basic controls and a smaller buffer, it is pretty much the same camera. I do think 60D (and even 600D) are perfectly fine for photos but the lack of 1080p slow motion (60 or 120fps) and lack of futureproofing resolution with 4K vid makes a no sense to buy it in 2020 if video is in the user's needs (which might not be the case)

      Hey thanks for watching and really appreciate you sharing the input. Those are really great suggestions too, I’ve thought about talking about both. I only give the edge to the 60D for price and how that gives people the ability to invest the extra money into other valuable gear like: lenses, filters, tripods, etc. Since people looking to buy usually want to spend their whole budget on the camera body alone I try to share this mindset, but if they have that gear or a higher budget I agree with you!

If you would take the risks, i would suggest you to use magic lantern, you could get even 2k RAW video footage. since you had high speed sd card. there are many tutorials in youtube, and also the website itself provides the guide in how to install clearly, i had been using 60d since 2014, and installed magic lantern back in 2017. i love your videos, just don't give up on 60d yet!

    Great video and really impressive photos👍 Just bought a second-hand 60d last month and still figuring the functions. I am glad that I did not mislead by some promotional TH-cam videos and buy an expensive full-frame camera for the first camera. 60d is more than enough for me, especially with the 50mm f1.8 lens. With a basic tripod and software like lightroom and photoshop, I can't tell why do I need a Sony A7. A full-frame and mirrorless camera is good but more like a consumerism trap for most amateur photographers like me😂

    The 60D is the only camera I have. My understanding is that, with the APS-C sensor of the Canon EOS 60 D, a 50mm lens will be sightly telephoto to approx 80 mm. If this is the case, is it worth it to buy a 50mm on a 60D? Or am I better off getting a new body to go with the 50mm?

    • @thejacobbunn
      @thejacobbunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey sorry I missed the comment, yeah it is still worth it. I use the 50mm on the 60D and even though it is closer to an 80mm it's still such an affordable lens and if you ever switch to a different camera it will be great!

    i disagree with video mechanics, cause 60d doesn't have IBS and auto focus video system ikr. this is the best cam for beginner photographer i must say. but remember this, at that price range i would definitely go for sony a6300 or higher.

    • @thejacobbunn
      @thejacobbunn  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I appreciate the input, I’ve heard the a6300 is pretty dang solid. I personally just suggest the 60D for the amount of money saved, and solid quality for photo and video, the lack of auto focus video can be a pain but I think in the long run pushes people to shoot manual and improve more in their mechanics so in the future with a higher end camera they will be incredible.
      Thanks for sharing though I always like to see other great budget cameras especially from Sony, I’m looking to try out one of there cameras soon.

    if you have some coin the canon 90d is the first none crop autofocus with 4k video witch will future proof you but no need to up Upgrade I in less you need the 4k

    I Have a broadcasting background, but have been out of shooting/editing for a while now.
    I don't have any equipment of my own, and I'm wanting to start building my inventory to start wedding videography. It's a punch to the guy to see how much a investment the equipment is, even for budget equipment.
    I just found a used 60D with battery grip and 18-55mm lens for $250cnd ($180.00 USD), but it looks hella beat up from the picture. I can't tell if it's too good to be true, concerning the lens alone could sell for a bit less.
    The smart thing would be to test on site before purchasing, but I have zero experience with the 60D, so I don't even know what I would be looking for for red flags.
    Either way, I'm just trying to find good enough equipment so I can learn, provide free video for two-three friends weddings to put together a portfolio, and move forward from there.

      Hey thanks for watching Brent, I think that’s a great idea and I’ve really enjoyed using the 60d for wedding videography. I mean that does sound really cheap for the 60d with that but if you test it out it would be worth it. Maybe check if it has a high shutter count
