I am originally from Spain. we boil them on water with salt, bay leaves, black pepper corns and a half lemon for about 4/5 minutes, then ice bath and eat them cold. In Spain they are very expensive, about 60$/pound.
I've always been so curious to try those. They certainly look like something you would steer clear of, like a parasite. After seeing you cook it, it definitely made it look less scary. So interesting how other places like Europe LOVE them, but to many in the US its alien. Wonderful video, you've a beautiful family. Love to see more from you. You got a new sub for sure. Have a blessed day, my friend.
Just a heads up to anybody who wants to harvest these in Oregon (and Yakf15h ) the limit on gooseneck barnacles is 10, so don't plan on getting enough for a proper meal in one day. The creator either had a small army of people with shellfish licenses or went waaaay over the limit. Make sure you read the regulations before you go!
Great video! Loved watching your girls try the barnacles! I have been the weird dad making my kids try new things since they were little. Now they are 7 and 9 and they love all sea food and love grossing their friends at school out with home lunches with things like sushi or deer sausage.
The Spanish go crazy for these barnacles, which they call percebes (I think that's how it's spelt, but don't take it as correct). They grow on the rocks of the Atlantic coastline, much as they do on the Oregon coast, but unlike Oregon where the tide drops so low you can harvest them easily, gathering them is a very dangerous occupation with a constant risk of being swept away by the waves crashing into the rocks. The Spanish have festivals where the harvest is boiled up: the skin on the 'foot' or body is peeled off and the flesh within is eaten, and white stony head discarded. They also cook and eat octopus at these festivals, were the whole community turns out.
My favorite videos to watch are the ones where they are using tweezers to remove them from the rocks....Building a fire near sunset....Boiling these in just water & eating them watching the sun set.............I would try them....
You are such an idiot. You do realize they were being cooked and eaten in Europe first. So maybe it’s more so a white person thing to eat anything then act a fool cause others are willing to try new things outside their own culture
I loved the teenage girl. W/ her comment:"You think they'll be surprised?" Like her dad is always eating weird things. Lol! By the way, I would strave to death before I would eat 1 of those nasty things. I always thought they were like Algae.
Appreciate the vid. Looks too much like a worm for me to eat. Chopped up and unrecognizable maybe I could do it. I love shellfish in general, so I'd probably like the taste. Bet this was a starvation or food of poverty originally. Lobster used to have a reputation for being a trash food, eaten by poor people and served in prisons, before being turned into an expensive delicacy. Maybe the same was true for barnacles

Was it a negative tide on that day? I would love to harvest some next time I am in Waldport
It wasn’t, just any regular low tide will get you this level of access to the rock. Negative low tide will get you out further

You should make some barnacle chips. I hear they're delicious! At least the way I use them
wish i could find some here in new zealand, around tasman bay
Taste wise is passable, he says. I'm sorry there's no way I'm eating a parasite. You're very brave. But I couldn't do it. Cute girls!
That looks so interesting. Your girls are beautiful, btw. I love that they are daring enough to try something a little strange looking, that's cool!
Wow, brave man !!!!!
Add some Lemon Juice, its good with garlic butter.
Thanks for the suggestion
What do they taste like?

When he’s ripping away the barnacles it’s kinda horrifying... like it’s a living wall of shells and worms
