    Inside 1000yds the Win Mag wins for the vast majority of shooters/hunters. Performance is nearly identical, ammo is in every gunshop, and nearly every rifle manufacturer chambers for it. The PRC wins past 1000yds where you will need the heaviest target bullets and will be handloading your ammo anyway. Good honest comparison vid guys👍👍

      hmmmmm . . if you don't have a 300win mag just get a 300 PRC. The military is already replacing the 300wm with the prc, and they may also be replacing the 338 lapua magnum as the 300 PRC outperforms it.
      You're failing to account for wind inside of 1000yds . . why would I want to pay for a 300 that's not as good?

    • @debi5292
      @debi5292 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Technie87 Because the PRC and ARC will fail. Not enough rifles. Ammo will disappear as there will be a lack of demand. Why because there are well established alternatives with a track record.
      A sucker is born every minute. Marketing guys will take advantage of you.

      What cartridge has won on the podium the most at 1,000 yds? The 300 H&H magnum. From 1925 till the mid 60's it was the cartridge to beat. If you don't understand history the marketing guys will eat your wallet. In a 300 H&H you get 4 in the magazine as well as feeding so good it will feed empty brass. The shape of that brass bottle matters. Belts strengthen the case head btw. Section belted brass and find out for yourselves.

    • @Technie87
      @Technie87 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@debi5292 Good bit of history on the H&H. However, the 300 PRC is what the H&H was when it was revealed and better. No belt, cartridge designed to be reloaded, straight walled cartridge, less recoil than the H&H, good out to 2,000 yards with factory ammo, high BC heavy bullets. . shall I go on?
      Pair that with depleted uranium or tungsten penetrators for the military and now you have something cooking.

    I have a Winchester Model 70 push feed that I bought at WallyWorld decades ago. It has the original synthetic stock, a factory 26" pencil barrel, and is chambered in .300 Win Mag. It's wonderful to carry while hunting as it only weighs about 7.5 lbs. However, extended shooting sessions like load development used to warrant a trip to the chiropractor, until I bought a Lead Sled. I have killed a deer with it, but I never felt the recoil of the shot.
    Great video! Keep them coming!

    I re-barreled my Remington Model 700 with a 27", 1:9 twist "Remage" style barrel and put the barreled action in a proper hybrid chassis. I can load out to 3.600" magazine length with 225 grain ELD-M's and 77.0 grains of H1000, Hornady brass, cci 250 magnum primers. I'm getting 2,800 FPS on the nose with a minuscule SD of just a couple FPS round to round, and shows no signs of pressure or primer smearing. The thing prints laser beam groups at 100 meters and I've taken it out to right at 2K meters so far with fantastic results. One could get the same results with the more modern .300 PRC, but the venerable ole .300 Winchester Magnum is still pretty damn effective. I'd suggest a guy starting from scratch to go with the PRC. If a fella already has the base rifle action, the brass and reloading equipment for the Winchester Magnum and enjoys building their own stuff, I'd stay with the Win. Mag. I'm no hater though, and am happy to see companies develop modern equivalents with incremental improvements.

    I'm glad that shooters get to talk about the old vs. the new. But in reality, once you find a caliber and a gun that you're happy with, i.e. it drops the game you go after at distances you're comfortable with, it has the recoil that you can live with, you have the equipment you reload with, why start over? I know that gun companies need to sell more guns. That's kind of it.

    An ELR shooter that I watch a lot of in Australia did a comparison of most of the popular 300 magnums and in his case the 300 PRC fell behind the 300 win mag because when he seated the bullets out to similar specs(running a single shot magnum length action) the 300 win mag had more velocity potential where the 300 prc is near max in its standard loads. Granted its not a plug and play option(similar to the old 7 rem mag Long range hunting rigs) but if you optimize the gun to the 300 win mag it's performance seems to eclipse 300 PRC.

    The biggest problem with the 300wm is the sloppy factory chambers. I have a Remington that shoots fine, but holy cow does the brass stretch on first firing. I want to try some of the Peterson long brass to see if it helps. But if a guy gets a custom gun with a match chamber, longer mag box, and faster twist, the 300wm gets awfully close to the PRC.

    I recently repalced a shot-out barrel on my 300 WM B-14 Bergara rifle with a match barrel, chambered with a .150" FB (3.700", .341" neck), 5R rifling and a 1-9 twist rate and have been very happy with the performance out to 1 mile, pushing the 225 ELD. Even before the barrel swap I was able to push the 225 out to mile. consistently. Both calibers have very smilar performance. I have owned the 300 WM before the 300 PRC came out so I stayed with the 300 WM, because of already having the dies and brass. I have a 300 WM for elk and moose hunting, and will not switch to the 300 PRC but continue to improve my current system. I spent 2 years getting this system as accurate as possible. Today it is capable of shooting five shot group at 0.58 MOA but my STD is too high for accurate shooting past 450 yards. I have successfully taken multiple big game animals out to 420 yards, but we do practice out to 1,000 yards. It is a Tikka action and barrel, Manners stock with an Ultradyne break, and Leopold VX6 optic. The load ELD-X 200gr, Lapua brass, Federal 215M primer, 78.0gr Mag Pro - resulting in cold bore average of 2920fps with STD 4.6 and a 5 shot average at 2933 with a STD of 10.6. I’ve owned both and I’ll have to say a 300 PRC ELDM 225 grain is hard to beat. 300 Win mag was designed primarily to shoot 180 grain factory bullets and barreled to do so but to get heavier bullet you would have to hand load and then most of the time the bullet pushed into the case capacity. The 300 PRC was designed to shoot long heavy high BC bullets accurately at long distance. I sighted my rifle in at 100 yards with 225 ELDM factory loads pushing 3030 FPS with a 30 inch barrel and went to 900 yards at 17.75 MOA of elevation. I then shot 1215 yards at 29 MOA in elevation.

      @ you don’t sound like you have ever dealt with the DoD and know how it works…..before I retired from the Corps in 2015, there was a lot of talk about the .300 Norma Mag taking over the realm of all precision ammo for the ASR. So basically when I first heard and dealt with the program when I was stationed at MCMWTC, Barrett had the multi caliber rifle and I liked it. It made logical sense. Hornady was then trying to optimize the whizbang science for the new round .300 PRC….it wasn’t able to be procured quick, civilians jumped on it super quick due to marketing. Caliber wise, training with the 7.62x51 (.308) and using the .300 Win mag for all other applications since it was already set in the DoDIC lists, it’s easier to order for training. Now that I’m retired, I just stick with the win mag as it’s got all I need for a round, I reload it as well. I keep it logistically simple. .308 rifle…Mk-39 EBR and the MRAD….308 / 300 win mag. I got the Norma Mag barrel, but I don’t use it. Notice it’s all .30 cal. I shoot 220 grain ammo out of my .308 and .300 win mag. As for the PRC….it burns more powder compared to the win mag and for civvies, that’s money you don’t have if you reload. I’m just looking at it from a logical standpoint. Seems you got sucked into the marketing gig of the new “latest and greatest since sliced bread”…..when you shoot 800+ rounds of .300 win mag a day or more for training…..and it’s a 2 month training……welcome to how the military does training. We know the rifles like the back of our nutsacks. They aren’t safe queens and shot as some Billy Bob range. They aren’t cleaned as much and they aren’t babied. Anyways…..you don’t sound like you served or dealt with anything remotely with the DoD.

    The biggest test should be with "hunting " bullets instead of Eld-x and Eld-m and Berger. Most folks who are able to elk hunt or get the opportunity to hunt in Africa are going to run Nosler Partitions and Accubonds, Swift A-frames, and Scirocos along with various Barnes monolithic bullets. At a hunting standpoint, it would be a more representative test. But the high bc bullets do illustrate both cartridges' potential. Truth be told your game animal won't know the difference at ethical distance. I will say both cartridges have their place and merits. I will say the win mag definitely earned its reputation. As far as availability of ammunition, it wins out. You are more likely to find the win mag in remote parts of the world and country. I can attest to this. In a mom and pop general store in Appalachia in WV, I can confirm that said store does have .300 win mag on the shelf. The PRC is yet to be accepted by mainstream hunters and professionals alike. I think the PRC is more of a specialized and niche cartridge. Where as the win mag is an all arounder. In my opinion I think the .300 PRC will be accepted because it's a .30 cal. The US is still largely a .30 cal nation. Also because of this I think it will do better sales wise compared to 6.5 and 7mm counter parts.

(1) I did not already have a 30 cal magnum (2) I built a rifle for ELR and wanted to shoot the heavy and long 230gr A-Tips (3) I prefer the slightly longer neck on the 300PRC over the 300WM’s shorter neck (4) Just personal preference, but I do not particularly like belted magnums. But if you do a custom built 300WM (not to SAAMI spec) so that the throat length is not such a restriction on case capacity, they are for all practical intents and purposes identical, even for ELR work. I don’t think that is an accurate representation…the PRC has more case capacity, and rated to a higher pressure (albeit 1000psi more). All things being equal (barrel speed, etc) the PRC wins by a small margin for reloaders. Factory vs factory, it’s a much larger margin.

      There’s nothing the PRC can do that the WM can’t, and the WM has been there and done it before the PRC case was even thought of. The only real difference is the PRC was designed with heavy for caliber, High B.C bullets in mind.

      @@RockinLOutfitters the 300PRC has a greater case capacity, which means more powder (very small difference). The 300PRC is throated longer so the bullets do not eat into the case capacity (mostly an issue for factory offerings, you can get a longer throat WM). 300PRC is technically rated to a higher pressure. All of these things are more meaningful for factory loads, where they compound on each other. These are not factory loads, just arbitrary handloads (not max loads). I said it isn’t an accurate representation of the cartridges, and those are the reasons why. Both are very close to each other and custom guns will run neck and neck. Factory rifles there is a small difference, but a difference. One isn’t better than the other…they’re nearly identical when built up.

But since I have rifle disease, I decided to try a 300 PRC. I favor hunting rifle designs despite having built custom rigs. To me, they just feel more like target guns. I just purchased a CVA Cascade in 300 PRC, thinking it just might become my go-to 30 cal. It has many features I like, and I can't wait to see how it shoots 212 factory loads. The idea presented by Hornady is that one could buy a budget rifle and factory ammo, then go hunt. I do like that bigger 212 ELDX, despite many writing it off. I suspect it will hammer elk, black bear, moose, and deer, say out to 450 yards or so. To me, a reasonable hunting distance. I'm not interested in sniping game at 1,000 yards, nor long-range target shooting. I know any of my 30 magnums can do 450, but my gut tells me the 300 PRC is in that 30 caliber goldilocks zone of recoil, accuracy, and thumping ability out there. The 300 PRC just might end up being my only 30 magnum? This comes from a hunter who also has a 6.5 PRC, 7 PRC, and 375 Ruger! In the .375 I was able to exceed 5,000 ft.lbs. out of a 22" Ruger with the 300 grain monolithics with several different powders. One advantage not noted with the PRC looks like the turbulence point will be more localized in the PRC case neck which should extend the barrel life of the PRC versus the .300 WM...
    though I haven't seen a good apples to apples comparison on rounds fired with high SD projectiles versus the lower SD variants.
    Lastly, with regards to ELR shooting in general. There are a host of factors that will constrain the realization of such pursuits... ranging from impact signature
    requirements, spotter requirements,
    range availability, optics, the increased influence of wind and shot to shot SD's given the trajectory curves encountered at extreme range...et al.! ELR shooting is generally a team competition! The .300 Win Mag. is more tailored for average competitor/hunter and as noted by a number of others here, vastly more available and a fast twist .300 Weatherby would no doubt give the PRC some probably insurmountable competition.
    With regards to your videos content...from what I can tell you have no real competition with regard to the level of detail and type of content that you provide. Keep up the excellent work and keep your powder dry!

My sd is 4.6 or lower based off my garmin xero. I’ve impacted targets just over 1500 yards. 1000 isn’t even worth mentioning. This one episode specifically, doesn’t make sense to me. There are a couple of weaknesses in both sets of cartridges I felt weren't covered.
    Free bore tolerances may be tighter and may or may mot translate to a "more accurate platform" (Which was debatable as you guys had stated) but with those tighter tolerances that you are going to have you are going to be having to be cleaning your rifle more often to avoid pressure signatures. That to me favors the 300WM and the 7mm RM over the 300 and 7 PRC
    Belted vs non belted handloading is bumped off the shoulder on the PRC's vs the Belt off the Win and Rem mags: That translates to case life. The PRC's being off the shoulder should in theory last longer over the WM/RM that are off the belt because off the belt sometimes you may be pushing the shoulder back farther than necessarily needed. Which favors the PRC's
    Factory ammunition offerings in two parts the 300 PRC and the 7MM PRC are infant newborns compared to the WM/RM counterparts (1) globally the WM/RM have been around since '63/'62 Vs the PRCs 2018/2022 if I hunt abroad and go into any gun store there I would be more likely to find the WM/RM's over the PRC's just due to age. (2) is prices you'll pay an average of $20-26 more per box over the WM/RM
    Those are three things I'd consider too, as of the moment the PRC's are more of a North American flare, life expectancy to be determined. Remember a lot of cartridges have tried to overthrow the 30-06 and the 308 Winchester(which is always debated) and have failed. These cartridges are time tested, tried, and true. Only time will be the determining factor and also how far they're willing to drop the prices on the PRC's to WM/RM equivalents

    Can the prc shoot 150gr?
    By the data shown on this video, the 300 win wins.

    Iv taken a lot of game with the 300 weatherby amd 30-06. Both do great I just trust the weatherby to do better at distance. I use in both rifles usely 180 grain

    I went thru all this before buying my 300 win mag. The 300 PRC can edge the 300 win mag out in velocity but the thing that made me go with the 300 win mag was ammo availability and load data.. there's basically load data for every load combo you can think of for the 300 win mag, it's been around for ever, so it's not going any where. The same can't be said for the 300 PRC. I do feel it's a tiny bit better than the win mag, but other problems that may come up with the PRC seemed like it wasn't worth it. I use the Berger 215 hybrid bullets and they are great. Right at .700 B.C. basically, .697. guys shoot 1500+ yards with those in 300 win mags. I've heard of guys shooting the 225's out to a mile or further also.

    The biggest problem with most 300WM rifles is the magazines, not the chamber. The 300WM chamber allows for loading much longer bullets than most people think or realize. Because of the larger .315" freebore diameter and the slightly shallower 1.4436° (1°26'37") throat angle for the Win Mag, the overall base to Ogive length for any given bullet at land contact that the Win Mag chamber can take is only about .045" shorter than the 300PRC.
    Basically that SAAMI 3.340 COAL for the 300WM is due to the Mag length of many older rifles and old short bullets. Put any 300wm in a Stock or Chassis that can take longer mags (like 3.850 CIP length mags) and you can easily handload rounds much longer than the 3.340 spec length, thus not eating up nearly as much powder space in the case.
    11:55 Interestingly, there is something going on with the WM that has it always seeming to edge out the PRC in MV. This video shows it with the 180's and the 212's, Mark from Mark and Sam Afterwork saw same thing with 250 A-tips and even was getting pressure signs in the PRC at a lower MV than the WM and I saw virtually the same thing with 230 A-Tips (ran into pressure signs at a lower MV than I could get them pushed to in the 300WM (both Factory Savage Barrels swapped back and forth on the same 110 action). Mark mentioned in a Video that he thinks it has something to do with the Long Skinny vs. Short Fat case difference but I honestly think it has more to do with the throat difference (kind of like the 223 vs. 5.56 throat difference allowing the 5.56 to be safely loaded to quite a bit higher pressures)

    Obviously if you're buying new get the new cartridge! But like me, if you're inheriting something in 7mm Mag or 300 Win Mag, leave them alone if they still shoot, go have fun with them!
    I also love my Bergara HMR! I load 6.5 creedmore on the progressive press and still shoot Sub MOA!

    Running a stiff load of RL26 under the 225 ELD-M in my Bergara HMR 300 win mag. This is a laser.. 0.3 MOA at 2968fps average with an SD of 5. I'll never change this load for this rifle. Try some of that RL26! You'll be impressed!

      Outstanding! However RL-26 is really hard to get anymore. Alliant has suspended shipments of their powders.

      @guyminer2384 that sucks...I worked out this load and stocked up on the same lot # of the powder. I think I have about 4 or 5 pounds of it left.

      @@trevorteague8430 - ya - I'd been using RL-22 in several rifles for a couple of decades. Good loads. Take a look at Ramshot Grand.

    Only thing I’d change on my 300WM is the twist rate. 1:10 is out of date for heavy projectiles and a 150-175 doesn’t meet my objectives. I can stabilize the 210 grain Nosler ABLR, but keyhole the 190 Barnes LRX’s in similar loads.

    I think you should try 300 win mag with 220 class bullets, it's what the new ish army 300 win mag is based around. When they changed from the 190 to 220 grain it made the 300 win a 1500 yard gun.

    I know 2 guys that own everything under the sun, both said they can load their 300win similar to the PRC. But the PRC is allot easier to build a load for and it shoots every bullet they throw at it very well. Where the Win in my experience can shoot incredibly well but takes allot of trial and error to find that perfect load

    Equivalent rounds shooting the same bullet with the same powder under 500 yards I would expect what you found. The 300 prc having faster twist should stabilize heavy bullets how about a test like that, 200 + bullets out of both at 500 - 1000 yards and check for accuracy?

    I would love to see how it compares to the 300 Weatherby.

  • @matthewgreenfield1449
    @matthewgreenfield1449 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    I think this comparison doesn't fully appreciate the improvements of the chamber design on the 300 PRC. From just a performance comparison between the two it is very close. But there is a reason why there are so many custom WMs, because the sammi spec leaves a lot on the table and 300 PRC solves all of those issues in a factory format.

    I like my win mag cause that’s what I have but the case design of that prc does give it an edge. I down load my win with 180s to 2920 anyway for deer so don’t really need anything more!

    I appreciate your commentary on the 300 I'm/ 300PRC I would tell you that I just finished building a 300WSM with a Douglas 1-9 twist barrel and I would like to hear your comparison between the two.
    Thank you so much for sharing your videos.

    Which ever you can shoot better!! it comes down to price / shot for me , the cheaper one means more rounds down range... more practice is better!!
