      @@AlyssiaStationI second that. I think one of the big difference between Latin and other languages is that it is more important to deliberately learn the various meanings a word can have. „Cum“ for example can have 17 different meanings. Since the context can allow for several different meanings, it is wise to know each possibility. I would tackle that with a memory palace solely dedicated to „cum“

    It never ceases to amaze me when I hear a teacher or professor of some topic or other say that using memory “tricks” like mnemonics is not really “learning.”
    Ahem. HS graduates can’t write a complete sentence much less a good essay paper, because we don’t teach them to learn, we teach them to pass tests.
    The proof stares us in the face every day. I can recite my ABC’s in a song, and I bet everyone reading this can too. I learned that in kindergarten. I can remember I before E except after C and “piece” is spelt that way because it’s a PIEce of PIE.
    IOW, I agree 💯. Memorizing IS learning.

      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It is truly bizarre.
      Thankfully, it’s less often said, but there was a period where people said these techniques were artificial, or not natural.
      I’m not sure what could be more natural than using your imagination in combination with things in the world, but the strange conclusion that mnemonics are artificial has been an issue in some minds.

      Thanks for letting me know about this.
      What I'd like to see is teachers being required to memorize at least 30 names in under 3 minutes.
      Then I think we'd see the techniques trickle down "naturally" to students.
      Otherwise, we'll wind up with the same old problem of teachers teaching things they're not qualified to teach.
      What do you think? Am I missing something in this logic?

    • @CassTyson
      @CassTyson 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@AnthonyMetivierMMM all you’re missing is the intentional destruction of our public education system by too-rich and too-powerful capitalists who prefer an uneducated workforce they can take advantage of, and the same time moving to privatize education so they can extract profit from yet another public necessity, not to mention this ensures that the wealthy get better education than the non-wealthy.
      Other that, yeah, you’re on point.

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      There's certainly a nuanced discussion to be had around this topic, and I feel we have every hope for a future premised on education being more open than ever before even if a solo "professor of memory" like me doesn't manage to make much of a mark in the end.
      Some test readers of my Memory Detective Jr. series have been showing very positive results with kids as young as 6 picking up memory techniques, so who knows... maybe one of those fat cat capitalists can be slyly tricked into funding my series into the schools like a Trojan Horse packed with Warriors of the Mind dedicated to learning...

    I appreciate everything you cover, especially related to learning languages and music. I see a few benefits to learning several languages at once. Learning French and Spanish at once has often help me get the vocabulary faster into my long term memory. My girlfriend is from Romania and very often she says this or that French/Spanish/Italien word is similar in her native language.

    Hi Anthony. This is great advice. I have spent a lot of time learning Lao. Memory Palace techniques were terrific for reinforcing vocabulary but there is also grammar. And living in the country and just focusing on that one language has really helped here. Now I am working on Khmer. It is so much easier because I already know the grammar rules pretty much - same language family as Lao - and there are vocabulary similarities in some cases also. The sounds are completely different so I tend not to get mixed up. And when I translate between Lao and Khmer, it reinforces the Lao. Early days though with Khmer as I am low on vocabulary. But in the country now so it makes acquisition, together with Memory Palace style of technique, a lot easier. This is a wonderful video. Thanks

    Once you've used a memory palace to cement information in long term memory (eg a set of gammer/words for a language). Do you then simply reset and reuse that memory palace? Say I learn 1000 words in a given language, should I then keep it for the rest of my life, or reset it?
    ps I also have a list of 5 short walks that I intend to use for memorising random lists on the fly (ie one for each days of the week with x amount loci - more than 5, less than 51

      For reusing Memory Palaces, please see:

      I reuse them only selectively, as its not necessary when using the Magnetic Memory Method to reuse or maintain them for life.

    Thank you. I have another question. Did you study linguistics as a supplement to the learning of languages? I really like learning about widely different languages, how they work “mechanically”. If you did study it, do you have any recommendations?
    Again, thanks for all the work you did. I’m a kid, so I can’t get the courses, but asking my parents for the books is doable :D

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      I have studied some linguistics, but not for language learning purposes. It’s not really needed, nor is grammar as important as some people seem to think.
      I have been studying it a bit lately as I invent a constructed language for part two of the Memory Detective series.
      I think its great to study languages to understand then mechanically, though. Power to you. I just haven’t found it that useful for being able to use any language, which really comes down to the Big 5 discussed in this video.

    You can learn as many as you want... if, and only if, you're enjoying doing it, you're having fun, and you're activating your dopaminergic system. However, you will not learn them to fluency with any real speed. It takes time and appropriate rest/learn intervals and persistence.
    This is, of course, my opinion. Also, this comes from starting multiple languages at once _after_ knowing Spanish well enough to speak fluently. You will not be able to do a bunch until you learn at least one additional to fluency. Once you have done that (and don't think you know as much as you think about your second "fluent" language as you think) you will begin to see more and more similarities between languages and language families.
    EDIT: That said, mnemonics is an excellent system for remembering things. Also, any method of learning that works well for you is a good way to start. The whole purpose of learning is to get things from short-term memory into long-term (or even permanent) memory. Use whichever (or all) method works for you. Visualization, particularly the memory palace and other similar methods are very worthwhile. If you can play with it, you can learn with it. (The phrase is still true if you remove the words "with it" from that last sentence).

    • @AnthonyMetivierMMM
      @AnthonyMetivierMMM  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Getting the saturation point where you can spot the similarities is a special moment indeed.
