I'm currently learning French and Polish separately and I've found that one advantage of learning two languages is that if I get too frustrated with one, I can take a "break" and switch to the other.

I love how each language seems to pull out a different facet of my personality and brings me closer to understanding the uniqueness of each of these cultures. Haha, it's true. Tonnes of language learning tips are NECESSARILY contradictory, e.g. I say: Speak, speak early, and speak a lot. But also: Get lots of input.
Luca is genuinely a pro at learning languages. So it's the same as a major league baseballer would not recommend switch-hitting (batting both right and left handed), but he himself may do that.

@@LeftToWrite006 Well yeah, and that Luca is not like most people. He wouldn't recommend that a first time foreign language learner start with 2 at once, letalone 3. But he has the process down to a fine art.

@@marcelosilveira7079 Yes, on average he spends about 2 years on them but as he said in this video, he is into his 3rd year of Hungarian. So I think he sort of learns them in 3 stages, 1: active familiarisation like he is doing with Danish at the moment, 2: more exposure and lots of speaking (Greek at the moment) and 3: polishing and continued exposure, like Hungarian at the moment. It would also depend on what language. I know he has said that Portuguese didn't take him very long because he was already very fluent in Spanish.

I admire your abilities and my Dad spoke 8 languages which he used in everyday life; a true polyglot. Here's the thing. He lived in those countries. I speak 3 languages and find the cultural context of each paramount.... this is in no way a criticism, just comparing how we choose to acquire new means to communicate with each other.

  • @theatisgr
    @theatisgr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +55

Learning 3 languages simultaneously is absolutely feasible, provided that they are UNRELATED. If you tried for instance to study Danish & Swedish together, you would surely mix them up. Now that you have a pretty high level in Swedish it will only take you a few months to reach the same level in written Danish. But when it comes to oral expression & understanding you’ll need LOTS of practice with natives!
As for Hungarian and Greek, the overall difficulty to reach say B2 level may be similar, but the difficulty of Greek is front-loaded. You have to learn a new alphabet (which is not easy for many people), to get used to the insanely unpredictable declensions & conjugations and to learn how to associate the new vocabulary with words that you already know from other languages, as the association is often hidden. On the other hand, Hungarian surprises you in the first steps with the regularity of its grammar. The original Hungarian vocabulary may be totally unfamiliar, but you’ll find lots of words of Latin, Germanic or Slavic origin. You’ll think “That’s a handy language for me to add a new flag on my badge in the next polyglot conference”. But as your study progresses and the sentences you read become longer, you’ll realize that there is something wrong with this language. Very often sentences make no sense to you, as if they had been written by someone under influence of drugs. Google Translate cannot make sense out of them either. The only way to understand them is to resort to the help of a native speaker. This is a problem you’ll NEVER encounter in Greek. Greek syntax is almost the same as Italian. If you transfer your Italian thoughts into Greek you’ll be perfectly understood.

      @LucaLampariello  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

Hey there! Long time no see ;-) I agree with most of what you wrote here. To me though, despite the grammatical idiosyncrasies, Greek comes naturally to me (because my native Italian has a lot of things in common with GReek), while Hungarian is more difficult to "tame".
As you pointed out, the way native Hungarians formulate their thought is still pretty alien to me.
Anyway, thanks for swinging by and contributing to the discussion with such a well-thought and informative message!

Man, Luca... you are THE BEST.
I love how when I looked carefully, I could see that you're learning Danish from a French book hahaha. Like I know you speak French to a very high level, but still, I love how naturally all this comes to you.
But I am also so glad you said the thing about the different levels: I completely agree (although basically anything you told me, I'd believe even if it cut against what I already believed) but yeah, I put it like this:
    - You can learn a few languages at the same time, but you can't (or shouldn't) learn them SIMULTANEOUSLY. Don't START in Danish and Italian at the same time. Get to the point that one of them is like practicing running, while the other is at the point of being like practicing backflipping. This makes them so different that you won't get confused.
I'd love to know your thoughts on short term language "boot-camps", e.g. I have not stopped learning Swedish altogether, but I have put it on hold for a bit while I attempt to study 250 hours of French in 3 months (about 2.5 hours a day). This is just to give my French a bit of a boost, while my Swedish will hold because it's about at the same level as your Hungarian.
As a guy who studies both or all 3 languages every day, what do you think about that?
Love your work Luca - you are my biggest inspiration!

As a first timer on this channel, i really appreciate this one, which came just at the right moment. i've been learning both French besides Spanish, and plan on at least two more when i'm ready, so i needed a reminder of what small tips can actually help keep on and keep up, after i had learnt Farsi but unfortunately fell into the trap of enough exposure, little to to practice. The key seems to be dedication, which is well-conveyed in this digestible episode. Good luck.
P.S. Curious whether you'd consider taking up Arabic (my native tongue) one day.

I think though more than 3 languages would be over-kill. So I learn Swedish, Russian and Portuguese. This was a great video. I am currently working on 5 different languages. 2 of them I consider hobby languages, because they are fun to learn(Japanese and Latin), the other three are because I want to learn them, so I can travel and speak in people's native languages. In order of "level": Spanish, German, Romanian. I had never thought of keeping a log book, I've always worked sort of haphazardly. I do all of my language apps in the evening before bed. Throughout the day I listen to various media in the three languages I am concentrating on. Your video has convinced me that I need to be more consistent in study, so I can get even better in my skillset. I don't really even know at what level any of my languages are.

Hungarian because of the unusual grammar and syntax, Spanish because of the regional slang and the initial struggle to understand some (mainly Chilean) speakers, and Danish because of the phonetics and poor articulation by native speakers.

I just need to reverse my study strategy and save Spanish for second. 🤦🏽‍♀️ Makes too much sense 🙏🏽 Thanks for the advice!!!!

I am learning German and Russian at the same time and a hack I find useful is to use learning material for a language in the other language. For example, I learn German for Russian speakers on Duolingo, and I watch videos about German learning in Russian. Of course this will work only if your level in one of the languages is already intermediate.

One thing that always gets me about all these videos by polyglots on how to learn languages is that they rarely, if ever, seem to mention full time jobs or young children.

I needed this so much. I've been struggling with keeping my German and Japanese in check while trying to start learning Korean. Despite being 6 years into Japanese and 3 years into German, I still usually start with one of the two, then the other then Korean if I have time left, which I usually don't because I allocate most of my time to German. I should do the exact opposite, at least for a while to get my Korean knowledge off the ground.

Mandarin and Italian are a bit more active, because I just started with both of them.
It’s definitely hard to keep at it with three languages at the same time. But if you organize it well and set priorities for yourself it works... more or less 😂😅 Italian just doesn’t want to stick with me.

    Luca ciao
Ho iniziato circa a 24 anni.

I started learning Japanese, and I am an intermediate with it but I want to learn Korean and Spanish at the same time.
I want to take japanese in the college during school. But I also am assigned to learn Spanish in school so hopefully this will help a lot with my future achievements. I have a future that I have been building up for years now. I want to go to Japan and live there maybe even start a business there.
I love the korean culture and their music and just overall everything. I have many friends who speak Spanish and I work at a fast food company right now so many people come through who speak spanish and have a hard time speaking English so i want to help them and make them more comfortable.
I have a history with being intrigued with all different languages. I never had a hard time learning them and so I knew that language learning is something kinda like a talent for me. Every language I ever tried to learn , it has always went smoothly. And most of the time I'm self teaching myself. But I love being able to speak different languages so this will help a lot for me.
I cant wait to use these tactics for my life! Thank you so much! You are a great help! 😄❤❤❤❤👏

Thanks a bunch! You're an inspiration as always!

If I were you, I'd pause the French. German is similar to English yes, but French is TOO similar. I feel that really will mess up your chances on the CAE.
And in fact, do not be too prouc to just say: There are 6 months until the CAE, I am ONLY going to do English until then.
There's nothing wrong with trying to get really really really good at one language. In fact, it's harder than getting quite good at lots of languages.

@@Teo-yl7oo "Biggest fear is that I'll lose" / "My biggest fear is that I'll have lost"...
You won't lose the level though. I did German in high school, 17 years ago, and I was barely a beginner (because I never ever ever did my work) but when I came back to it, I picked it up at twice the rate that I picked up my 3rd language (which was already twice the rate of my second foreign language). In other words, I had not forgotten it, even though I thought I had.
And yes, English, and any European language actually, is very hard to get to that very top level.
