Hyundai 13 - Baseline Tuning & Blunders

  • This video is a continuation of previous videos where we installed ECMlink, configured it for speed density airflow metering, and achieved a closed loop idle. Oh how I wish I could have simply changed some values in a few cells to make it road worthy but no… not Jafro. Things never work out that way for me for whatever reason.
    No matter what company logo is on your bumper, if you work on your own car, then in order for you to be any good at what you do, you have to be able to own your mistakes. Only then can progress be made. I should have done a better job at inspecting the used parts that were bolted on. The radiator, the intercooler, the intercooler pipes, the 2 radiator caps, the silly electrical problems that were found… and how I half-assed my vacuum system so I could get it to an inspection station. You can bet I'll pay more attention in the future. At least now that's all fixed.
    What I just described is not the frustration, but the challenge and the fun in doing all of this. Perfection doesn't happen overnight, and for this Hyundai I realize it's impossible, but the amount of stuff wrong with this thing are precisely the reason I'm having so much fun with it. Hopefully you're having fun, too.
    In this video I iron out the remaining mechanical bugs, make some upgrades, fix some things that weren't broken, they were just stupid… and continue where we left off with the baseline tune from the previous video. Since tuning fuel is the same exact thing as tuning airflow, before you worry about either one of those, set your timing. I show you how right here in this video. This video is WAY better than my other timing video. I'm not even linking it here, it's that bad. I swear I want to delete that video someday.
    If you need to build a boost leak tester so you can test the health of your car, I have videos for that, too… Some people use smoke for boost leak testing. It works. I prefer soapy water. Leave me alone. :P
    How to build it: • Boost Leak Testing 101...
    How to use it: • Boost Leak Testing 201...
    More about how to use it: • Boost Leak Testing 202...
    How to seal up injector seal leaks: • Boost Leak Testing 203...
    Robert's ultimate boost leak tester: • The Ultimate Boost Lea...
    ^^SUBSCRIBE to that dude. ^^^ Seriously. ^^^ The last 3 scenes of this video wouldn't have been possible without him. The man's a tuning genius, and he's got a nasty fire-breating corn-fed 1g AWD talon project.
    Achieving closed loop idle doesn't necessarily mean you have your global and deadtime settings correct. The process of dialing in your global and deadtime is a little different for me than most other people who use a more popular brand and size of injector. For people who use everything but a RC750 PL-4 injector, ECMtuning is the best place to start because they have a page with dozens of popular injectors' default settings already figured out and documented for your convenience: www.ecmtuning....
    If you're new to ECMlink, another page you should visit is the Quickie A/F setup page. It includes instructions for tuning idle, cruise and WOT: www.ecmtuning....
    If you're having idle surge, poor idle, or just want to know more about the ISC motor, visit this page: www.ecmtuning.... …and OH HEY! My ISC motor testing and replacement video is linked right off that page. Cool! Thanks Thomas! I guess I don't need to link it here… :) That page details the BISS/ISC procedure I do in this video, and my video shows how to test and replace the ISC motor without using ECMlink.
    …by the way… if you're tuning airflow or fuel… a wideband o2 sensor REALLY helps. I've got a video for that, too.: • Innovate LC2 Wideband ...
    …and another one about how to install ECMlink with a Speed Density configuration.: • Hyundai Assembly 10 - ...
    If you're subscribed, of course, you already know this. Thanks for everything you guys do here. Thank you for spending your time here with me on Jafromobile!

    Your videos are truly inspirational. I got burnt bad when I bought a 2g a few months ago. What was supposed to just be replacing a blown turbo has turned into a ground up build in my driveway. With 100 degree days and a crappy work schedule it's hard to get things done. But watching your videos give me that extra push to keep going. I know once the finished product is done it will be awsome. I got the old motor out today. Just gotta rip out the old hacked to crap wiring harness out and start putting everything back together. Thanks for all you do for us.

      Ryan Villeneuve Keep at it bro, I did the same thing like 7 years ago... What was supposed to be a simple fix, turned into a full motor build and head work and FPBlack The build got turned up since so much more needs replaced than I first thought. Good luck with yours. It'll be worth it when it's done... at least that's what I keep telling myself... Until I grenade a trans or transfer case anyway. Lol

    This is a testament to the power of truth and honesty. I have watched almost every video that you have posted and I appreciate that you tell it like it is with transparency, even when mistakes are made. Honesty isn't the best policy, it's the only policy. If I can't believe what comes out what's the point in spending my time watching and learning? Keep it up, I'll keep coming back!

    Let me start with... I love you man.
    I left VA about 3 years ago after going the contractor route instead of active duty. It made me so happy to see the beautiful VA roads, and sweeping 360 on ramps that I miss so much now that I am in the middle of the desert. That rag had me giggling my ass off. Stay as unsafe as the safety inspector will allow, drive fast, and take chances.

    IT'S ALIVE!!!! Glad to see she's running down the highway! Once you get a tune down, I am curious to see how you're going to install and utilize your water/meth kit on this build. I've seen tons of folks buy the very Water/meth kit you've purchased, and have had a hard time getting it to work as intended. Glad to see some progress on the Hyundai! Keep her alive, she's a unicorn and deserves her due. Thanks for all you do to make these videos happen.

    So refreshing to see a real person into engine, mech and tuning, to see them actually be real, not edit it out, that's bloody Gold. It is what sets you apart... I'm an Aussie living in Sweden, all my tools are back home so it's awesome to watch your TH-cam channel!...
    One suggestion, and I know the time consuming nature of the game, but I'd love to see more videos 😉

    Finally, a new Jafro video! You sure dodged a bullet with that oil leak, and the rag was hilarious! I love the honesty, because things like that happen in the real world, and I surely don't think less of you one bit after seeing what happened. Great work!

    I'm pretty sure HorsePower TV would never make this video. The idea that a build is finished once the engine is in and running plagues the performance aftermarket. This video was fucking great. Even after all the thoroughness you put into this build there are still things that need to be looked at. Awesome stuff Jafro whens the new video out? :P

    Thanks for the video's Jafro. I have found them interesting, informative and sometimes funny. I don't own a 4G63 or any other Mitsubishi engine I just liked the detail you went into in explaining your trials and tribulations. I don't understand why you went to so much trouble doing this work on a old Hyundai Elantra but hey whatever floats you're bubble. Great job any way. Keep em coming.

      +Dallas Dorrington The car was a gift to me. The vast majority of gear heads out there will question why I fixed it after it broke... but the minute you're behind the wheel of this thing fighting torque steer all the way through third gear and smoking the tires pulling bus lengths on brand new shiny luxury and sports cars who are doing everything they can to NOT get beat up on by a 23 year old bottom-of-the-barrel 4-door economy car… suddenly you'd get it. It is a handful. This car is stupid-fast from a roll. No, it's not safe. No, it's not stylish. No, it's not a fashionable car to be seen in. No, it isn't valuable. Almost nobody can even recognize what it is or remember them from when they could be found out on the street? It's extremely-forgettable appearance screams "POS!" from every angle, and it is. It's a terribly made car. It's rife with problems. But if you own a shiny $65,000 luxury sports car and you've got nothing on some silly s***box economy car with a license plate that reads TRADE YA, then it's doing its job. They will never forget the day they encountered "it" and tried to pass "it". That's that 4g63 power for you. It's addictive. If it didn't provide so much driving enjoyment and adrenaline production, I'd have crushed this car a looooooong time ago.

    I am not a guy who comments on very many (read: ANY) TH-cam videos or channels, but I have to say, this is by FAR my favorite TH-cam channel I've ever found. You are informative, insightful, humble, and entertaining. I value the time you've spent making these videos and documenting the process for the world to see. I especially enjoy your ability to alternate between "anal retentive engineer mode" and "gotta get it done with what I have mode." It's great to see someone taking painstaking care when it's actually warranted, and "getting on with it" when it's not. Please keep on making videos for this community to enjoy, and Thank you.

    Glad to hear it running and glad you found the problem. At least your tune went quickly after all that "practice". Glad you found someone that could help and a big kuddos to all those in the background that are willing to help with tools, and advice. I love my new soldering iron. Had a bad lamp socket on the Stealth and whipped out my butane soldering iron and went to town. Very convenient and a great addition to my tool collection.
    Thanks again for all your hard work. Not sure what takes more time. You turning wrenches or the time it takes to edit and publish these videos. Probably the latter, by some margin.
    Anyway, it was good to see another well done video and your progress. It is all the little things than can really burn you on a new motor build. Old radiators and oil\coolant leaks are the most worrysome.

    It is a good feeling to finally see you drive down the interstate in the car and hear a few pulls from that engine i have seen you work on so so hard, i have been watching your videos for nearly two years now and have enjoyed all of them very much! u have a unique way of explaining things and trying to teach good principals from your mistakes and existing knowledge.
    I especially liked the segments you did on the more in depth subjects of engine rebuilding mainly with the 7 Bolt Tear-down video because i have a 7 Bolt 4G93 and was doing a complete block and head rebuild at the time i did the lot even parts of the gearbox, you where the main one that helped me successfully rebuild that engine and pointed some good thing to do and look out for!
    My rebuild was completed nearly three months ago and has been running flawlessly i have been keeping a close eye on everything and just yesterday Installed my LC-2 Wideband 02 like you have recently and i am Logging and making small calibrations.
    Keep up the awesome videos! Thank you for improving me Jafro!

    Thanks for another great video. I was reminded of a few of those problems my talon had. My oil filter also loosened up unexpectedly and made a mess but was caught before things got ugly. The bigger problem came when the BISS fell out while driving. Thankfully we found it and were able to get the idle dialed back in.

    I found that my rtv diy gaskets are much much stronger if I form the rtv kind of neat on the mating surface, let it sit for several hours then put things together, if the rtv dries before assembly it is super durable and compresses much harder without oozing out or thinning too much (super integrity). love your vids, my fiance hates my projects, lol. Somehow, I did not know that little fact about "oil rags." Thank you for that. :)
    So, you had a t-shirt in your intercooler... Stylin'! Don't worry, I can do ya one better. First car I ever owned, when I was still learning about all this nifty stuff that later turned into my career... I had bought one of those accordion-style intake tubes from the local auto parts store to replace a aged and torn factory rubber section. Completely did not realize that it had separate rubber ends tucked up inside it. First drive out, wide open throttle, traffic light way up ahead turned yellow, lifted off the gas to step on the brake, and the car kept right on going. Sure enough, one of those rubber end pieces got sucked into the throttle body and wedged the plate wide open. Fun!

Perhaps a few of my brain cells revolted, knowing this would happen and slipped that thing in there with good intentions, but I really wanted the old radiator to work out. The old Hyundai thermostat was on a shelf at eye-level over my workbench and I still missed it. It has to be some crazy kind of divine DSM intervention.

      S4Meow I was way more worried and it was just the oil cooler! I've been fooled by one of those oil coolers before as well. In my case I was fixing a customers car. Saw the coolant line leaking, thought like a dummy it was for oil. When I took it off and coolant came out?
      Face palm! Duh, no wonder the customer's car was low on coolant! lol
      ...so in my case the oil/coolant mix up was what the tube was for instead of the different fluids, still an oil/coolant "mix up" haha.

    Looks good. Be careful, vibration will make those little steel plates eat through the aluminum radiator tubes in a hurry.

    ***** Ahh the rag in the piping had me dying, When i first got into dsms years ago I couldnt make over 2-3 psi and worked on the car everyday for a month checking everything, turbo, compression, boost leaks, wastegate, ecu, etc etc... Collapsed flex section internally in exhaust, 3" down to a quarter size, talk about back pressure, My face was literally just like yours.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ALLANgCR7 I said something wrong in this video. I said that changing combinedFT changes AirFlowPerRev, but it's the other way around. Get airflowperrev in range with your global and deadtime, then adjust airflow in the SD table (or the fuel sliders if you're not SD) until you get your combinedFT to behave. ;)

    JB Weld on some of the metal can stop the boost leaks between the welds. It is some powerful stuff. Stopped an evap and exhaust leak on my Audi.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      jolmeaki That's exactly what I was thinking. I didn't want to resort to that, but it's what it's going to take. We used up the whole second bottle of Argon trying to fix it, and at $48 a refill, that "glue" solution is looking pretty good!

    • @RotaryTurbo
      @RotaryTurbo 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Unfortunate, but even for an experienced welder it's crazy hard to weld something that thin air tight. Miracle glue to the rescue!

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Using my compressor turned down and soapy water...then JB weld. Oh yeah. An end to EVAP leaks baby! I was thinking I'd have to get a smoke tester. Even a simple home made one like features on Scotty Kilmer once.

    • @jolmeaki
      @jolmeaki 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      DE Nichols I had to get a smoke test at a mechanic shop to find my leak. Found 2 leaks on a metal tube that leads to my charcoal canister that kept my CEL on. JB Weld on since March with no problems.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado

    Jafro...enjoy all your videos. Thanks for making them. I wanted to ask you if there is a chance you'd consider making a video of how you keep your shop/garage organized. I know you created a video series of garage reno's, but how do you keep tools, parts, fasteners, fluids, miscellaneous clips, connectors etc all organized? No matter what I find myself doing to keep organized, I still forget, misplace stuff.
    Thanks

    You've had problems using RTV for the J pipe? I used black RTV and havent really seen any issues with it. If anything it seems to be overkill.

  • @seanohutton3185
    @seanohutton3185 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    Would also love to see a in depth series like you do, but building using a 100mm stroker crank, like is shown in the end of the "why so Sirius" video... So we can see how to build an affordable stroker, and can travel along with you on that adventure!

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seano Hutton Maybe someday... I have a spare 7-bolt block with nothing to put it in, but I have a whole lot of other non-stroked 6-bolt projects to finish first. :\

      That's kewl, one day =)
      what happened to the colt... The videos seem to finish once you finished the floor pan out, coated and painted... The last thing I could find was you finished out what seems to be all the rear drive running gear, and you said you would make it start and stop... But I ca t find those videos.... Where do I look to find those?

    • @seanohutton3185
      @seanohutton3185 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's interesting because I have done a 2L, awd conversion into a cc lancer coupe in aust, very similar with cutting the floor pan ect...
      I believe you guys call it the mirage...

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Seano Hutton You would need to look in 2016 to find them. I wish I had that thing finished already, but 2 of my cars blew engines right as I got the Colt rolling on all 4's again... and I needed the garage back to fix them. Did I mention that I run a low-budget operation? No? Man I wish they were all indoors.

    • @seanohutton3185
      @seanohutton3185 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, yeah, mate we all run low budget operations... I'm actually looking at some of the stuff in your videos and thinking man, that is good he has the proper gear.
      I understand budget constraints... I was actually thinking I was looking in the wrong spot on your channel, I'm still just glad you haven't give up on the "mellow yellow"... Just sitting there, chillin... Maybe it could have the stroker?... It's doable 😈
      For what it's worth I think you do a bloody good job with the channel, you have international support, surely to Christ, and for your "low budget" your outshining some big budget operations... Keep at it mate =)
      Credit where credit is due! 👍

    Do you do your BLT with the engine at operating temperature or cold? I just did one on my 1g after an FMIC install while cold and getting a lot of air in the crank case. Wondering if that is a concern or if I should redo the test at op temp to see if it still bleeds. It's not popping up my oil dipstick but I can hear a woosh when I pull it or the oil cap off.. Any input would be great. Thanks @Jafromobile

    Jaffro watch in your meticulous ingenuity and listening to your car knowledge blows my mind. Are you mechanic by trade? Because I've had a seized ej255 and I've managed to disassemble everything and ziploc small parts and then wrap everything in shipping shrink wrap to keep the parts from oxidizing any further, tomorrow, I'll be double checking my bearings and journal seats. do you have an email address that I could send you pictures of the disassembled block? any advice would be appreciated. Love your channel, it's been uber informative, still waiting on that red paint baked head project... keep it up man

    A 9mm bullet casings work perfect for punching bolt holes in a gasket when your making your own, I have used this trick many times when making gaskets. But I understand not everyone has bullet casings laying around.

    • @DENicholsAutoBravado
      @DENicholsAutoBravado 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sgt Balestrini I bet some people flipped out seeing your comment. To explain for them, it's a bullet casing. He's not shooting a whole in the metal. He's using the brass casing like a cookie cutter.
      I only have .40 and .45 casings about, but great trick!

    Who would have known that this second coolant filler cap ends up to be the only one! There was someone who made you pick that part at first because he knows that the radiator was crap and you need to mount the other one anyways. Sometimes things happen because of an reason. And the dirty rag even explains why that thing did not like to startup at the begin at the first start... Air need to find the way around it first. But great work and shit just happens!
