  • I wasn't paid for or asked to make this video. Whenever someone makes a product that improves one's quality of life and experience... and I buy it, then you see me use that product on my channel because that's just what I do. This video is just intended to be my ten cent tour of how easy it was to install ECMlink and to configure my 92 Hyundai Elantra for Speed Density airflow metering. Really I just followed directions that were on the ECMtuning website, and you should always follow the manufacturer's recommendations over mine. I just wanted to show this one off because...
    1) I love ECMlink.
    2) I get lots of questions about what software I'm using in my videos.
    3) I collect tools. Though some people call this a "mod", to me it doesn't stop there. This is a diagnostic tool. It's a tuning aide. It's a data-logger. It's a power-adder and economy booster. It's a complete engine management solution that doesn't require cutting or soldering a single wire on your electrical harness to use it.
    But fourth and most importantly...
    4) I've always had a great experience with this product as well as all the awesome people who make it and support it… I'm very grateful to Dave and Tom, especially for attending gatherings, events and dyno days to give back the community. I'm thankful for all the contributors in the forums who continue sharing their knowledge.
    If you are interested in getting the hardware and software necessary to support your 90-99 DSM or EVO 1, 2, or 3... these links will help you get started:

    * Follow these instructions first and foremost. My video only proves it can be done.
    jjrock5's ECMlink install on a 2nd generation DSM:
    • DSMLink ECMLink V3 / E...
    My personal testimony:
    10 years ago, I won DSMlink v2 in a raffle at the DSMCA GT9 gathering. Tom was there giving away an ECU. Somehow my number was drawn. I won it. It is the holy grail of raffle prizes at a DSM event, and any one of the 10 people who have ever been so lucky will all tell you this.
    In 2005, I had been using the MAFT system for fuel tuning and I was beyond ready for something new because I wasn't getting the results I wanted. After installing DSMlink, the car's next journey was a DSMCA Dyno Day where once again, Tom was there supporting entrants with their tunes on his product. By the time the 6th pull was over, Tom had dialed in EIGHTY horsepower at red line that I didn't previously have. The car used to peak and fall off, but the power curve peaked and held all the way to red line afterwards. The video doesn't lie, but sadly it was captured with a potato cam. The before/after results were astounding. The one who's vociferously surprised by the before/after in the video - is Tom. While peak power did not increase, there was a 33% gain in power output at 7000 RPMs.
    Without DSMlink: • 1st time on the dyno
    With DSMlink:
    • Dyno tuning with maker...
    If you look at the order page and balk at the price, something's wrong with you. If you were to divide the price of ECMlink by the number of features it contains, they would cost only a few cents each. If you compare it to stand-alone solutions, it's an outright bargain. Of course, if you own ECMlink already, then like me... you feel sorry for everyone who doesn't have it unless you're racing against them.
    Some of the electrical procedures outlined in the factory service manual require special tools which are now antiquated and/or discontinued, or the procedure is rife with complicated processes to do simple tasks (setting the idle speed for instance). You will never see me follow the FSM methods for these tasks in my videos. I am going to grab my laptop, plug in my ECMlink cable and check the box or button that gives me easy and immediate solutions to my problem. I offer no apologies for this. If you're here because I sent you the link when you asked me what software I'm using, I hope you feel I've done my very best to answer your question.
    For the patient people who watched all the way to the end, that link goes to a video that is not public. That is your reward. Thank you all for your time and attention, and especially, Thank You Tom! Thank you for your contributions to the DSMCA community that built me. Thank you for the raffle. Nothing happens by accident. I won my first ECMtuning product, you gained a life-long customer out of me, and this video is my way of saying "thanks" for all you have done to help our community thrive on race day.
    This is the mother of all descriptions.

Im going to be taking on my own project doing many of the things I've seen you do to this car. Port, polish, and a turbo, plus fuel management system to a Hayabusa sometime in the next few months because of what Ive seen you do in your garage. Great video. I know some people out there needed a good setup video to help them get tuning. And yes there are a few of us ecu hackers still working with the 1g and 2g binary files and a eprom emulator . I just added 2 step and nlts to my stock 2g binary and it works great next steps I will be taking is swapping over to speed density and rewriting the hex code for it. As for dsm link it is a great tool as well. And the support is wonderful. Tom from ecu tuning helped me out a a ecu for my 97 spyder capped socketed and even swapped the cas inversion to work on my 6/7 bolt configuration with the 1g cas sensor without asking great company. Keep the videos coming looking forward to seeing this build put down some numbers.

      Brian Smith I wish I did have more experience with it. Because I've had DSMlink for a decade, I haven't had much need to, so that's why I don't know much about it. Having a RAM-based ecu configuration can spoil you.

    Yeah! Was too excited to see the notification for this video pop up on my phone. I watched Part 9 (again) last night and was hoping another part of the saga would be ready soon. I've learned an immense amount from these videos - can't thank you enough for that. Just curious: why the Apple hardware? Don't worry, I'm not part of either "camp" or interested in judging you. I built my own PC for the enjoyment of the build and I game when I can. PC seems like the natural choice for that task. I also have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro being used as a HTPC right now. It's a real trooper and has given me almost no trouble. Just wanted to hear your thoughts on why Apple stuff works for you.
    Again, thanks for these videos, Jafro. Inspiring stuff.

It's a college, so he might also be able to buy them at the educational institution discount price. bnwbr I swear I replied to this already, I don't know why it's not here? William's right. Jafro Macs because Batman. By day I'm a tier 3 technical coordinator for 9500 users connected to a private university. Primarily I support Apple products and I'm uniquely positioned in that... When a new machine comes out, I have it because I design, build and deploy the environment that the faculty and staff use. I don't have any attachments to computers because they're only with me for a short time. Maintaining them is my job.
      By night, I'm a defender of all things DSM and a master of taskbars, delivering cold hard 4g63 justice to the world. That's why it's a Jafromobile. If Batman can have a Batmobile... Why can't Jafro have a Jafromobile?
      There are lots of great Batman channels on TH-cam. You kinduv have to Batman in order to TH-cam channel, because TH-cam doesn't pay batman enough to build his Batmobile.

      Sam Rotshtein The concert was even better than the shirt! 3 huge circular frikkin' stage light rings detached from the stage and floated around a 15,000 seat arena for the entire duration of Wings For Marie/10,000 days. Complete with smoke and lasers. They stretched that song out to 28 minutes. BTW, Tool is back in the studio right now. Now that the lawsuit is over, they're predicting a release before the end of the year. At least I upload videos more frequently than once every 9 years.

      I've wanted to make exactly the video you're describing, but I can't seem to tune anything on it right without traction and a consistent electrical system. That car is currently sitting up in the air on jack stands, getting some suspension and tire work done. I'm going to re-visit the alternator install, too. I think I can do it better. I think the alternator isn't spinning fast enough. The voltage regulator overheats after about an hour. It didn't do this with the factory alternator in it. Sorry if that's a spoiler.

    I just received my new V3 ECM link a couple weeks ago and have been pouring over the wiki and forum but there doesn't seem to be a clear winner in the Speed Density vs. GM MAF debate. Pocket logged also did modified ecu's for second gen RX7s, we had two way communications with that for adjusting fuel, timing, injector staging, and injector sizes. But like with the DSM it still relied on Palm, you could make it work on pc with a palm emulator, but thats a moot point now.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      spikederailed Yessir! I... I hope nobody thinks I was bashing the pocketlogger product itself. Really I'm picking on the Palm hardware. At least that's what was intended. I was meaning to convey that the pocketlogger was the only thing that made a palm useful. lol.

    Great progress on the build, and a great video as well Jafro,I got dsmlink v3 full about a year or so ago, I like all of the features so far, its like a standalone engine management system... well minus the cost and the extra work involved, also wanted to know by any chance have you heard about dsmlinktools, its a program that aids in dialing in a tune, might want to look into it.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mitsubishikid It's been pulled by the developer. Speed shops were charging people for using their [free] tool, and I missed the boat on it. It would be unfair for me to demonstrate it if nobody else can get it.

      Mitsubishikid Would love to. Would feature it if it helped him out somehow? But if he wants to keep it under wraps, I totally understand.

    Does the turbo timer go into the tuning equation at all? I sort of understand what a turbo timer does, but on this particular setup does it play any role at all? If so how? Do you think all setups should have a turbo timer? If so, what features should a good turbo timer have? Sorry for the barrage of questions, just finally remembered to ask.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +BoostedCajun It's interesting that you should bring that up. I had to move the trigger wire for my relay to the ground wire on my turbo timer because when I cut the car off, my wideband o2 sensor stopped working, causing the car to go stupid lean. It's at idle, so it didn't cause me to blow up my engine, but it's definitely not good for it or the o2 sensor's calibration. Turbo timers need to do one thing, keep the car running at idle for a couple minutes. An adjustable run-time is a good thing. Other than that, the other features built into them have better equivalents available in separate devices. For instance, I have one in my Galant with an A/F gauge function, but it's narrowband... and that's everything short of useless. That just tells you your o2 sensor works.

  • @chrisfisher9096
    @chrisfisher9096 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey jafro, you wouldn't want to produce those map sensor brackets would you? They look amazing compared to what I've seen.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Chris Fisher Hahah… nope! The 1 problem being the cast bracket comes on the car, and I don't have a source or a part number anywhere to buy them. The one I used came from the Colt engine because the Hyundai never had it. It's not perfect. It has its problems. It makes adjusting the timing really difficult because it blocks the swing of the wrench where you tighten and loosen the cam angle sensor.
      The other problem is this… when I spend time producing parts, I'm not spending time making videos. There may come a day where I begin manufacturing a product, but I've got 3 other busted DSMs to fix for the sake of your educations and entertainment first. Please feel free to copy me, I don't hold any patents. ;)

      Bradajay On who? On the Mac side? Which OS version and which software package? v2 was the only one that's ever been tricky for me.
      Try enabling root, and performing the installation from there. Make sure you're running Apple's version of Java. If you have more than one version of Java, make sure the drivers are in the right directory for the version set as your default. If none of this works, post your question in the ECMtuning forums. ;)

  • @BoostedCajun

    A few things I noticed, no meth injection? How would you run it now that you have a sensor where meth injection nozzle normally is situated? If/when you install the meth injection kit, will that mess with the GM temp sensor's readings? Thanks for all the helpful info, I will be using a lot of the same fuel,ECU and air mod's you've used on this project. Thanks again for this GEM of DSM related info you gave us here. Now to watch the next video again..... ;-)

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BoostedCajun You just need the sensor several inches upstream from the meth injection nozzle and it won't mess anything up. At the moment I'm more concerned with tuning without it, then adding it so that I can achieve the maximum benefit. You'll see how I deal with the nozzle. :)

    I appreciate the vid but I'm not sure I haven't done all that it doesn't want to connect ever, but does connect to my buddies windows comp. so I see you have windows on your computer how does one do that?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      AllFourSpinDsm Un-install your current installation. Un-install the Oracle version of Java if it's on your machine. Log in as root and re-install it. Find the Apple version of Java (2014-001) and install that. Install ECMlink last. Unless there's some other piece of security software on your mac that disables Java, everything should be in the right places and it should work. You can't install it successfully from a non-administrator user or from an administrator user having the "502" or "secondary admin" user number. Only the first administrator created on the machine and the root user will have privileges to install Kernel Extensions into the /System/Library/Extensions folder, and that's what the serial driver is. It's a Kernel extension. After the install, restart the machine, log back in and make your connection. The serial driver installer doesn't invoke a reboot, and us Mac users are used to installing software that just works without having to do that. You can launch it all day long and never connect if you don't restart afterwards.
      If you don't know what your user number is, you can open the Terminal, type "cd /Users/" return. Type "ls -alon" return. It will show your user directories, and just to the left it will display the user numbers of your accounts. 501 is the primary admin.
      If you want to enable root access, go to /System/Library/Core Services and launch the application "Directory Access". It's in the menubar options after you click the lock and authenticate as an administrator. Select "Enable Root User" and set your root password. Log out, and log in as other: root with the password you just created. As that user, there's nothing on that Mac that you can't access. You don't even need to authenticate installers because you're root.
      Disable root when you're done for security reasons.
      ECMlink works great on the Mac once you get it connected. I really did it that easy in one take with what I feel is the second most problematic version of MacOS (after Lion 10.7), on a fresh install and that's how it went for me. The only thing I can think of is Java not having rights to run, an incomplete installation, security software blocking it, or another program hogging the USB bus. If you wanted to run Windows on your Intel Mac, there's an application in the Utilities folder called "Boot Camp" that will help you get it set up. ECMlink for Mac works great on everything from 10.6 to 10.10 in my experience. I even ran v2 on a Mac when it wasn't supported. v3 has come a long way.

    Would a programmable cpu be any benefit if it is running wide open throttle 95% of the time, like mine. I heard that at WOT the cpu isn't really doing anything, just dumping all the fuel the injectors can handle. Just like to know if it's worth the investment.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SupermanBPR9 Yes, because you can adjust your timing, and how the open loop fuel tables (wide open throttle) behave. For instance. Your ECU has a default timing table that it uses to determine how much ignition timing it can get away with. If you're not knocking, you can add more timing advance and make more power. If you're running rich, you can lean out the mixture and... yes... make more power. It's possible to throw enough fuel on the fire to put it out. Fuel needs air. Nailing that razor's edge between air and fuel makes the most of your fire.
      I think this was well demonstrated with my dyno videos. Nothing changed on my car except for the ECU an the paint job from my first visit to my second. Thomas Dorris from ECMtuning dialed in an extra 80 hp for me at red line on my second visit. Without DSMlink, it peaked power output around 5200 RPMs and fell off. After ECMlink it peaked and held all the way to red line. It completely changed how the car pulled through the gears on track day.

    • @Jafromobile

      ***** The software is free, and the cable comes with it. You just tell them what generation your DSM is, and they send you the cable with your completed order. It's included in the ECU modification package. If you want to buy another cable, that's another story. But it won't work without first having ECMlink.

    You said you ran your maf vacuum to the pvc port. Did you T into the port or reroute the PVC line?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the MAF PLUG has the MAP and IAT sensors' ELECTRICAL wiring going through it. Nothing with the vacuum lines. I had to watch the whole video to figure out what you meant. The ECMlink cable plugs into the MAF plug and gives you separate harnesses to go to separate GM sensors. It bridges that gap so that it's plug and play.

    • @boostjunkie92
      @boostjunkie92 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jafromobile I was referring to what you said at 1:10. I ran into a dilemma of where to source my vacuum for the MAP sensor since it's advised to have a dedicated source. Thanks for the reply though. Your videos are awesome. They helped me quite a few times.

      +KRG_Royal oh! Gotcha. I didn't tee into it. My MAP sensor does plug right into the PCV breather port on the intake manifold, and I don't have a PCV valve on my car. I know what you mean, I still have an old Mac OS 9 g3 iMac with the solid-state logic board and vacuum tube display that I like to fire up for that retro feeling. Funny thing is... it's still 3 years newer than that safc2. :P The Apexi gear is very useful, but if you want an accurate means of monitoring, you should really consider using a wideband o2 instead. With the SAFC2, you'd want to treat it like the MAFT or any other piggyback solution. Keep everything zero'd at stock for 450cc injectors and do all your tuning in ECMlink.

    Alright I'm in a bit of a situation Jafro. On one hand I am pretty much set on throwing down the $740 for DSM link and their SD setup. On the other hand I just got an offer for an AEM EMS series 1 for $300. I know the dsm link is much easier to tune with and nowhere near as finicky as the AEM setup. But for the savings I sudden could have is it really worth the grief with harder tuning if you're even familiar with AEM?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Dave S (Davenia419) This is a subjective question that is entirely open to personal opinion of the public. Everyone else will give you the answer for what's right for THEM. Without experience using both, there's no way another human being can give you an objective answer. The people who have invested time and effort into learning how to use one of them as a solution will all say it's the best. It's part of human nature to have an opinion and vouch for what you know. I made this video just to put out there what I know. They're very different products and I have yet to need to use an AEM EMS.

    • @daves8407
      @daves8407 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** that's a fair answer, and probably the best answer i could get. For what I'm aiming to achieve the ECMTuning package is the way I have been leaning for a very long time. This deal with the AEM EMS just kind of fell into my lap and am frantically trying to make a decision because I just find myself torn between what I know are both good solutions even with having little to no tuning experience. Thanks for the input and I'll be "tubed" in to your next video whenever that may be.

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave S Even if I remain neutral in my comment, it was an attempt to give both products the respect they deserve. I can't hide my loyalty. Please note that I am not posting a how-to on installing an AEM EMS. I've used ECMlink products since 2006, *and have yet to build something that required a stand-alone EMS*. I'm also many seconds slower than the fastest people who use ECMtuning products. So I haven't even used it all yet. :P
      If you know your stuff, there's huge value in that deal that fell in your lap as long as... 1) you need nothing to make it fit your particular car. 2) There are no shop supplies like hoses, clamps, fittings, gaskets, sealants, welding, grinding, plumbing or tools that cost you time or money to adapt it to your car. 3) you know for a fact that everything works 100%. 4) there are people answering your questions, or who have already answered them in the searchable forums.
      Understand that if the product causes anything to become problematic over time, that it adds to your cost in the long run. Yes, it is true that people have made thousands of horsepower with the AEM EMS, but they didn't do that with a street-built car. I don't know your particular car, and I can't ultimately tell you how to spend your money... but if you *READ the ECMlink slogan*, and know that there's an archived model-and-product-specific web forum dedicated to the ECMlink solution, and you have a car with a 4g63 in it, then there's a ton of value in the ease of installation and the product support. ECMlink is adaptable, and you can build it out.
      In my opinion (from that of an ECMtuning product user)... If your DSM is _usually_ going to run on gas bought from a pump at a gas station (whether it's leaded or un-leaded), then to me, ECMlink is the only right solution (not that ECMlink can't handle the stuff out of the can... it does... You just don't need to re-wire your street car with a standalone EMS to reach the compression and horsepower limitations of those fuels. ECMlink will do that and more, and it's plug-and-play. Run a wire to the clutch switch if you want... but you don't even have to.
      Also in my opinion... That's a good deal! I would buy the AEM EMS. I would just never put it on my DSM.
      You have a tough decision to make. *OR*, the easy answer is "get both". Get link for the DSM and AEM for the steel-hulled 2JZ-GTE turbo powered nitromethane burning twin-prop fanboat. After all... you gotta have _something_ to take out on the water. I would totally ride in that thing with you, too!

    • @daves8407
      @daves8407 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I am going to get both. The nice thing about this particular unit is that it IS plug-and-play so no rewiring needed. WIN!! I'm just not as familiar with something as, shall we say, complicated as the AEM software. Just cant pass up on a deal for $200 on a standalone worth over $800 still. Hey any chance of seeing a video on the DSM IAC/ISC system at some point?

    • @Jafromobile
      @Jafromobile  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave S Hmm... never really thought about going in-depth on that one... Probably because most of the parts outside of the ISC and the BISS screw are pointless and unnecessary. I mean, they do _something_, but the average car owner wouldn't know anything was broken if the FIAV failed. Not unless it was spewing coolant. I only have 1 stock DSM left, but it's not even a DSM. It has something wrong with all that stuff, so perhaps it's the perfect candidate? I have some big expensive fish to fry first before I can drag that one back out, though.
