Stihl 044 and 046 of mine have never left me hanging. I keep the air filters clean and run high octane gas 93 and above. Castrol 2 cycle oil. 30+chords a year for the past 15 years. Your saw sounds good after it warmed up. Excellent video! Glad to find your channel through BBR
That 038 looks very similar to the 048 (76cc) 1980-85? on the inside. Looking to find some seals & maybe bearings as no parts available in NZ. I rebuilt the top end a few years ago so the top in like new with great torque. It idles down to almost stalling & then comes back, up & down, adjustment makes no difference.
Ya the Stihl filters are available. I just picked one up (038AVS) You have to order the filter parts individually and then assemble it. You have to know if you have a compensating carb when you order the filter.
That’s a noice saw there buddy!! Thanks for giving the numbers out I was thinking around the same for one of my builds.. but I will be building a ms380 clone first to see how it goes. I do have oem top end, crank, fuel tank and handle bar for an insane race saw but I don’t really know how far I can go before they will fall on their face. Just cookie cutter racing. Have a good day buddy
Hey Tinman I have a question I have the opportunity to buy a blown up 041 is it worth it to repair and can you find pistons and rings from wolf Creek/ meteor or highway or is it just have to find OEM or it's just parts thanks
That runs a lot better.I had a customer give me the same model he was fed up with it the same problem. My lucky day.All the best to you all big hugs to tinbaby.
Great video! I have an 038 super with a recently fitted magnum top end, 25” bar, it has so much torque and cuts anything with ease! Just needs a light bar as it’s a little on the heavy side.
I’ve been watching all your videos on this 038 saw as I have just found one in new condition in Australia. But I expect that because it’s an old girl that I’ll need to know some of the findings you’ve shown us here so thanks for the info! They’re a classic saw for sure and you definitely make some valid points about their downfalls with the air filters. I’ve just bought it as a collectors item rather than a work saw really. I’ve got an 076 super av in new condition a makita/dolmar 7900 and now the 038 av magnum. :)
The mating surface between the carb and air filter is known to leak. Not good for ingesting fines or choke operation. I’ve heard a thin coat of grease helps a lot, never tried it myself though.

Hey Tinman , nice to see her rippin, what a hard way with this choke System. Early 26s had the same System and issues. Congrats to your Family for having a Baby . Best wishes from Germany!

Great to see the 038 come out on top My 381 is very reliable here in Australia on our hardwood, I think a 3foot bar is a bit ambitious tho haha. Thanks tinman great content on this build!👍
I ended up adding the metal filter piece to the carb on mine to make the choke work properly. Wasn’t out far enough and would just bind up and not work unless you manually closed it
2:42 - 2:49. Seven seconds of family talk, annnnd back to saws. This is pure greatness. Also, a sincere congratulations to you.
Those switch shafts wear out over time and will not fully actuate the choke shaft. A new shaft will most likely take care of your issue.

Great to see the 038 running good!

You sure got your money’s worth 👍
Way to run off them gremlins Tinpappa!!💪🏿❤️❤️

I bought a ne038 Magnum II back around 1996 for ranch use. It was okay. But why bother with an 038, when you can run 044s?
Tinman I’d bet a shiney new 100$ dollar bill all your saws would run better if you flipped that hat bill down where it goes! lol
Had one 038 Fb , same air cleaner ,terrible set up...never thought to try improve it tho.. so hats to you on success
I think it likes that 24" bar and chain, my 032av likes a 24" , shes a screemer!
Sweet saw tinman!!🤙👍

So what was the final on this saw? Did it run well? Does your buddy like this saw?

Got an 041 here in Parts
Good job 👍
Keep up the great work
I wholeheartedly agree with you on the sharpening.....

I'd love it. Great job. 😎👍
Here's a link to replace air filter

They are a bit heavy thats for sure.
Another HVAC guy who likes chainsaws. That’s Kool.
👌🏻👌🏻👍👍👍👍🙋🏻♂
My 038 has no washers at all. just normal nuts.
Yea just been in on my 039 and no washers at all either . And that had never been apart

Grease works good for that for sure
It’s cheap insurance. I use silicone paste on my 362
O Machado e a Motosserra
entraram junto no mato pra mostrar a serventia
a motosserra roncava machado velho tinia
e naquele matagal foi só cavaco de pau pó de serra que subia
e esse grande duelo deste jeito é que termina
na briga das ferramentas o machado é que domina
motosserra parou cedo ali no tronco da quina
machado seguiu cortando mata grossa e mata fina
motosserra impotente rebentou sua corrente acabou a gasolina
Hey Tinman , nice to see her rippin, what a hard way with this choke System. Early 26s had the same System and issues.
Congrats to your Family for having a Baby . Best wishes from Germany!
That switch/choke set up was a little questionable.
I had an 038 & 034. They both had the same set up. It was problematic on both saws.
Nice ash!
Nice job Tinman, there is nothing worse than a hard starting saw!!!
I agree. Those are the saws that sit on the shelf.
Great video! I have an 038 super with a recently fitted magnum top end, 25” bar, it has so much torque and cuts anything with ease! Just needs a light bar as it’s a little on the heavy side.
Don’t talk down yourself Open muffler , too little back pressure? Could you blue the clutch drum and look for wear patterns?
I have an 031 av with the same style choke. I suspected it of not choking enough as well. But i can kill the saw by choking it.
Those filters used to cause us so much grief in the shop I worked in. That choke plunger is just a bad idea.
Great to see the 038 come out on top
My 381 is very reliable here in Australia on our hardwood, I think a 3foot bar is a bit ambitious tho haha.
Thanks tinman great content on this build!👍

It's looking and sounding very promising👍🏻 I was about ready to eat my own words about the muffler, until it got good and warm!
I had one of these saws in a commercial environment for about 5 years. The way that carb is mounted is a stock config. No washers were used there.
Great work . Nice to get it sorted . I have an 038 av Super and have learnt a lot . Thank you ! Keep the updates coming . Best wishes 👍
Those ratchet straps are doing absolutely nothing smh
Just love the persistence and the journey👍💪
I add an o ring to the center air filter screw, carb side to add better seal for fine sawdust.
Tinman can you build the P41!
Hey ol'kid I really enjoy your vid's keep up the good work!!!
I have learned a ton of stuff my friend thank you for your time you is AWSOME!!👊🏼🤠
Thanks for being here John
She's a beast and I love it . Great job Tinman
Looks to be running much more better good!
Cool ol saws hope u figure it out soon!!
Nothing is like echo controls
72cc of raw power! Love it!!
Hopefully a proper muffler will wake it up some more.
Appreciate all your videos.
Those choke levers wear after few decades and don't catch , a new one fixes them up
helo is it for sale sthil chain nsaw
Hey tinman what would cause a 372 xp to want to run at 2 and a half turns out
Sounds like an air leak
Great stuff Tinman!
Good work Tinman !
Hey tinman what would cause a 372 xp to want to run at 2 and a half turns out. It's just rebuilt by the way
Sounds like an air leak.
@@tinmanssaws I thought so thanks
saw turned out great 👍
Thanks
Nice saw! Good work!
Thanks Antonio
crappy design for the choke, why do engineers do that? simple is best.
Hey Tinman! Nice job! Can you send me yer email? I have a a Dolmar 119 Id like to talk to you about.
My email is on my about page.
awesome tinman .peace an love from scotland .do u have mailing box number .i have something i wish to send u tinman .
Love the work tinman. I’ve lost interest in stihl saws particularly for that air filter/choke design. Hate it
+1 to that
Newer saws don’t use that style
