The idea of living a simple life is often portrayed as this great lifestyle where there are very little worries and little responsibilities. I'll be the first to admit, however, that what makes for a good video isn't always the most realistic. Living a simple life can be challenging because life is so complex.
In this video , I share "6 Challenges of a Simple Life."
    1. It’s Not All About You
I often approach my videos from the perspective of the individual. And making individual decisions to live a more simple life is easy to do from the perspective of the individual; however, you have to consider other people. Just because you want to make a decision to live a simple life doesn't mean that other people want to make the same decision. Humans are complex; however, despite that, you can still make small decisions to strive for a more simple life without imposing ideas on others.
    2. Social Media Rules The World
Social media has made the world extremely complex and has caused so many problems in the world. Their business model often relies on manipulation to maximize screen time. And no matter how many steps you take to avoid social media, other people's use of social media will still affect you and make it hard to live a simple life. However, you can still make steps to minimize how much social media can control you.
    3. We Need Money To Survive
Money rules the word and can make things extremely complicated. It's hard to live a simple life when you're constantly trying to keep up and no matter how hard you work, it is very hard to make money. And no matter how nice the idea of relaxing and taking things slow sounds, it isn't always the most realistic. However, I believe that we all have areas in our finances that can be improved and we can take steps to have more control over our finances, which can lead us to a more simple life.
    4. Life Isn’t Fair
Another challenge of living a simple life is that life treats people differently. There are some people who could make every wrong decision in life and still have money and not get into trouble. We are all running a different race of life; however, that does not mean that we can't learn from each other. When people from different backgrounds come together that's when the most innovation happens and we can learn and make changes.
    5. Conformity is necessary to be part of society
As I mentioned, "it's not all about you." We live in organized societies and a huge part of living in a society is working towards the "greater good." We have to conform a little bit because of societal rules. This can make living a simple life a bit difficult as it involves giving up a bit of yourself. However, just because we have to conform to society to an extent doesn't mean that we can't make small decisions that benefit ourselves without harming others.
    6. We’re Constantly Shown A Perfect Image Of The World
Social media does a good job of portraying this image of perfection. We often compare ourselves to others and hold ourselves to standards to be perfect. This can cause mental harm and make you feel bad about yourself. It is important to remember that no one is perfect and no one practices 100% of what they say. Even if living a simple life isn't always the most realistic doesn't mean that we can't exchange ideas and attempt to apply some of the ideas in our lives.

My children’s profound special needs; every day there are serious fires to put out. I so yearn for “ control” that I have had to learn to surrender. And don’t get me started on the worry snd what ifs- rabbit holes to insomnia hell :(. Maybe accepting the uncontrolled chaos of the unexpected is the way?? I Don’t have answers, and I have accepted that I never will; in a way, that’s a form. of simplicity I guess :). Accepting that we will all experience unexpected, very serious, complicated events multiple times in our lives is a form of acceptance and simplicity, maybe??

I live a simple life. Honestly, the biggest challenge was my tendency to sabotage myself by backsliding on the commitment to control my own spending and live beneath my means. I've overcome it but remain constantly vigilant.

I am 60 and have lived what I consider to be a (relatively) simple life, and hope to continue to do so. Living in New York City, I have no need for a car; I bike everywhere. My tastes are relatively modest as is my cost of living. I enjoy reading, as opposed to eating out or going to concerts and theater (though occasionally I do those as well). I have always been able to live within my means. I don't crave expensive things: I shop primarily at flea markets and thrift stores -- my preference, not a necessity; I simply like to be surrounded by things that have a history. Even the books I read are usually purchased at the Salvation Army or borrowed from the library. I belong to a gym/pool run by the city that costs $150 a year. My fridge is 32 years old and still works so I keep using it. This is just the way I am. As a young person, I went to an expensive prep school (on scholarship) and spent too many years feeling deprived since I didn't have many of the things my schoolmates had like enormous city apartments, summer homes, ski trips, expensive clothes, or sleep-away camp. As I got older I came to realize that those are just things and don't define a person's true worth and, most importantly, that nothing is free. Many of my classmates who had those things rarely saw their parents, who were too busy making all that money. I am fortunate to have grown up before the age of social media. I read blogs and (obviously) watch TH-cam videos that interest me, but I have chosen not to participate on Facebook. I am now married so I have someone else's preferences to consider as well (fortunately we share the same values vis-a-vis simplicity). My 92-year-old mother lives with us, making our lives less simple: she is at a stage of life when she can no longer live independently. However, I find having her live in my home, as opposed to an assisted living facility where I would have to go and visit her, to be the simpler option, and consistent with my beliefs about the value of family and the care and attention our elders deserve. My larger point is that sometimes life circumstances make our lives more complicated but there is almost always, among many options, a simpler one. Finally, because of my low-key lifestyle, I have enough money. In a city like New York, where one is constantly exposed to great wealth, it's easy to feel like you don't have enough. That's where it helps to remind yourself what's truly important and what YOU value, not what Madison Ave or Instagram influencers tell you to value. Like you, I traveled a great deal as a young person. Perhaps as a result, I don't crave travel at present. Taking a hike in the park, going on a run or bike ride, or getting away for a week to visit family is enough. Keep up the good work, Austin!

People keep mistaking simple for easy. Life ain't easy.
Simple is subjective. My simple is not your simple. Nor should it be.
Too much simplicity or too much complexity is not good. A delicate balance is needed for a robust life.

I think you are CLOSE but I would add a dynamic.
      Simplicity and Complexity
Simplicity and complexity is a balancing act, but not like scales of 50/50.
FOR COMPLEXITY TO EXIST YOU MUST HAVE SIMPLICITY. Complex structures can NOT exist without smaller simpler structures to support them.
EXAMPLES: A house can NOT exist without bricks, or 2x4s or whatever smaller simpler building component. Your body can NOT exist without cells, those cells can NOT exist without molecules, and those molecules can NOT exist without atoms. These all need to be STABLE in order for complexity to exist.
If bricks on your house randomly decay your house is guaranteed to not last long. If your cells just randomly start dying then your life is compromised, if atoms were not stable then reality as we know it wouldn't exist.
There isn't a war between complexity and simplicity, it's just that simplicity leads into complexity, and you need to have simplicity. A complex structure without a solid foundation WILL fall apart.
This is IMO the problem with our societies, with our homes, with our lives, with our products, with pretty much everything we do right now, whether by design or not. If you want a robust system you NEED simplicity and redundancy it's just non negotiable in our reality.
Lets take cars for an example. There is nothing INHERENTLY wrong with like a BMW, the problem comes from when the BMW is your ONLY option for transportation and there is no cheaper, simpler, more robust alternative. The BMW is a complex machine designed for a certain goal. The car makes no practical sense for most people, so if the BMW was the only vehicle sold society would quickly crumble. You need the diesel trucks, you need the simple commuter cars and trucks so that people can do the work to maintain the infrastructure to be able to support the BMW in the first place!
You CAN NOT have complexity without simplicity. It's just that simple. If something happens which doesn't allow for simpler structures then the complex structures WILL fall apart eventually.
So if we are talking balance between simplicity and complexity then simplicity needs to be like 90% and complex structures need to be like 10%, a 90/10 split.
If you focus on complexity in your own life without first mastering the basics and building a strong foundation then you are destined to fail. We see this all the time people juggling a million things trying to maintain their house of cards then one gust of wind comes along and knocks it all down. If we were honest with ourselves, we would focus on the absolute BASICS first before moving on to more complex things.

I am a woman with cerebral palsy and these past few years, I was often told I have no life or that I am boring, because I live the simple life. I'm not a partier, I don't attend concerts, don't drink or smoke, etc. I'm more or less a homebody. Aside from funerals and family reunions, I've not truly traveled since I was a child living with my grandparents. And as I've gotten older, I've come to accept my simplicity and have begun to be more frugal as well. I will be 40 this coming April, and it saddens me to see a generation so strongly attached to social media, consumerism and materialism. I miss the days when life really WAS simple, before things like social media and selfies and so on existed.
Now more than ever, I personally feel that society needs to get back to its roots. Be kind, be humble, spend time with God by praying, reading the Holy Bible and going to church. Spend time with family and friends face-to-face, but don't lose sight of the moment by spending until you break your bank or spending too much time in front of your screens.
We only have one life to live and another tomorrow or even another moment is not promised. So, we must use our time, words and actions wisely. Not one of us is perfect, but we can all change for the better. For me, as both a Christian and as a person, a simple life is a humble one. And we as a people, as a community and a worldwide nation, must not forget that. Or what it means to be kind and humble and what life and family is truly about. Like so many in this world already have. God bless

This is a good reminder that we don't have to be perfect. That we can define our own progress. I try to get a little wiser every day. Today I was in a doctor's office and they were showing HGTV. I've always found those shows kinda entertaining. But today I saw it differently. I asked myself, "What is the message here?" Well the message is your home isn't good enough. You need bigger, better. It breeds discontent. Just a little glimpse behind the veil.

Minimalism isn't synonymous with simple living you can have a simple life even with lots of things . I retired at 32 now 40 and would be considered to many as simple living as I have farm and have very slow life majority of time . I have lots of money yet spend less than 1/2 . It's all someone's prospective. Someone without clothes washing machine and dryer may think how it would simplify life will those with one may romanticize doing laundry and hanging out to dry on line.

Great video. It's all about getting people to question how/why they are doing what they are doing. The POWER lies in that. The way we are doing things is unsustainable, and will surely tip a point at a certain time. I'm convinced that you can live a simple and intentional life NO matter your circumstances. It's a "conviction" of sorts (minus any religious affiliation).
You simply decide that you don't want to take part in the "hustle culture; more is better, I'm hotter than you are" society we are churning, and look back 50+ years and what was considered entertainment. Take a walk. Read a book. Pet a dog. Make a picnic. It's not enough anymore to say it's all a mess, people are starved for actionable steps. I ran a boring bookclub and we all reveled in the fact that the book club meeting was THE highlight of the week. This is in a world where taking a vacation every week seems the hallmark of a good life.
I have a child with special. needs and I've never travelled the world- though I have travelled domestically with her. I don't need years of travel under my belt. I don't need a 6 figure side hustle. I just need a job that pays the bills, insurance, ability to save a bit, a budget for my home-based hobbies, access to healthy foods, my home gym and I am set. It's a fallacy that we should all be focused on and striving for this HUGELY successful, public existence. Plenty of people enjoy a quiet, boring, simple life. I'll leave the hustle culture for the influencers 😁

Thank you, Austin, for sharing your ideas! They are appreciated! One of the problems with social media is that because of the algorithms, it limits what ideas we are exposed to; the algorithm is designed to show us more of what we agree with and less of what we don't agree with. This creates poliarization in society; a difficult and dnagerous thing. As a society, we have lost the ability to agree to disagree. The other problem with soical media is it creates a culture of narcissism, both among many creators of content and many consumers of content. Not all, of course. So I appreciate seeing videos where people share their ideas, inviting others to consider something they may not have before, but recognizing that it's not going to be for everyone. Life is complicated and unfair, and we do need community to get through it. Thank you, and all the best to you!

There are around 13 million children in the UK, the adult population is approx 50 million. Around 4 million are over 80 and probably not on social media. Leaving a balance of 46 million with 32 million Instagram accounts, Or about ¾ of the adult population.

Laws began as ideas being tossed around the table...For many, most laws do not benefit or are not in line with our beliefs, but still, we have to abide. The good news about ideas to achieve a simple life is that they will never become laws. Therefore, you can choose to take or leave the advice as necessary. Or, as Austin once said: you're as free as your ability to say no. Another great video!

Wealth is a lot of things. It’s not just money. If you lose your health, your not going to be very wealthy! If your not wealthy in spirit, if you don’t have any love to share with others, your not wealthy in love. I could go on and on. I’ve found in half century of living that being grateful for what you DO have is really rewarding and gives a wonderful feeling of wealth. It’s pretty incredible if you practice gratitude. Don’t just believe me either. Try it for yourself🖖

I've simplified our lives as much as possible. We walk into our home and it's comfortable in here. The bills are paid. I repair our appliances as much as I can. My husband makes sure our lights stay on. I make sure his paycheck is as effective as possible. We find affordable things to do on weekends. Yesterday we did the Hershey Chocolate World Tour. It's a free tour of the world of chocolate making. At the end you get a free sample. We bought two clearance packs of peanut butter cups. Just enough. We came home and napped because we're getting old. I have an idea that might better the world. It's going to cost a lot of money to put into action, so I'm working and investing in order to get the money to get it up and running.

I don't understand anything, really. I love your videos on simple living philosophy, on minimalism, on financial education and on exposing the danger of uncontrolled consumerism.
You weren't wrong, you were right. You can live a simple life regardless of the problems and impediments that society offers you.
I don't understand the function of this video. It is already known that choosing a simple and intentional life has situations to overcome, but it can be done, nothing happens. Worth.
I would really like Austin that you do not become another one of those content creators who have been saying minimalism yes and ended up saying minimalism not so much anymore.

the reality austin is that humans will always convince themselves that their way of life and decisions are what it best for them. when one lives on a tight budget they will favor the value of frugality, when one becomes wealthier they tend to focus on the value of the good things in live with less concern of actual expense. we always have to convince ourselves that what we are doing is optimal, thats just human nature.

Interesting thoughts… I understand where you are coming from, but I think you need to add “for me” to the end of your title. Living a simple life is different for everyone and the term is completely subjective. Just because you feel it is impossible doesn’t mean that it is. I honestly think anyone can live simply. You just have to define what it looks like for you and intentionally chose work towards it each day. Not every day will be simple, but keep working at it and soon enough more days will be simple versus complicated. Also, you said life is complicated and that actually isn’t true. Life isn’t complicated; human nature is to make things complicated when they don’t have to be.

    Hello Austin.
Many of your thoughts sound very similar to Stoicism and Taoism, and I have noticed that the channels that use those words has crazy viewing numbers. You can thank me now or you can thank me later ;)
If I was in your situation I would consider working once or twice a week, the make some purpose/plan in a week so not all days are equal, and it might give some benefits like being part of something, socializing and have colleguages. A job with several social interactings, maybe a service job.
    And/or:
And I would also consider one evening / day a week to help the local community, being it refugees, people with disabilities or whatever you find important. It would, for me, give life
More purpose and like I said earlier, not all days equal.
Please do not take this as criticism, it is just some thoughts I have had after trying to put my selves in your shoes.
I admire your lifestyle and do think about how it would be for me, but for the moment it scares me more than the wish for this lifestyle. But your videos, along with reading books about stoicism/Taoism, helps me value time so much more.
    That’s a lot more than the usual 🤩🤩 😂
    Have a great day
