I was assaulted and diagnosed with herpes afterward. It's funny, the 6 months after that diagnosis were the hardest months of my life, and the six months after that was some of the happiest. I met my current partner, learned more about HSV, and learned how to stand up for myself in doctor's offices and have open and honest conversations with my partners about it

It's psychologically impacting because it became a stigma in the 80s thanks to a Time Magazine cover. Around the time acyclovir was developed. Now isn't that a coincidence? Nothing like changing a benign infection's status to a dangerous std to get everyone running to buy the medication.
Prior to that, it was just that, a cold sore down there. It wasn't classified as a venereal disease.
To this day, people openly talk about their cold sores, but the genital version is taboo and stigmatized, when it's the SAME virus. Actually, the oral version is more dangerous because it can get into your eyes or brain. The genital version is only dangerous to a newborn if the mom has an active flare-up during delivery.
I've even read stories of people with cold sores rejecting person with genital herpes. Like, wtf.

@@dammar117 In This Podcast Will Kill You, they also link the stigma to the advent of antibiotic treatment being able to cure other STIs that then led to the religious a-holes demonizing herpes to continue their celibacy dogma. @@MrTreework But do you expect people with cold sores to disclose? I bet not. And yet, the physical implications are the same.
They can even give it to you down there due to crossover, and you would end up devastated and stigmatized, while they would still get to publicly make light of their pimple.
When you think about it, oral hsv is worse because A) it's visible (nasty looking); and B) it can get to your eyes or brain.

I’ve had HSV-1 as long as I can remember (got infected sometime in preschool). However, I got recurrent lesions so frequently and severely that intermittent use of acyclovir was not effective. I was finally put on a daily dose of acyclovir in high school. This has literally saved me so much distress, as the sores are an eyesore and definitely affected my self-image. My experience: never had hsv outbreaks in summer time, in winter only. Since I have taken 4000 IE Vitamin D every day (+Mg), I don't have any outbreaks anymore (but were still present with 2000 IE /d). Better take oil droplets (Vitamine D solves in fat), and it's easier for dosing. If you don't eat enough vegetables, also supplement Vitamin K. Vitamin D will boost your immune system, reduces risk of cancer, + dementia, helps against allergies + winter blues.

I think more people need to realise that around 60% of Americans have HSV1 and when you add HSV2 it's more than 80% of people have 1 and/or 2. The ones who don't have symptoms act as though they're not infected when they probably are they're just lucky not to get symptoms. There wouldn't be so much of a stigma with having herpes symptoms if people knew this.

@mannotwiththeplan Try boost up your immune system, and have cream at hand always. I went through a period for a few years where the slightest tingle id feel, id apply cream, and the cold sore wouldn't even grow out. Also, when the cold sore would develop a white head, id pop it with a pin, and delicately get the fluid out without touching any other skin, then apply cream inside the wound. Maybe this contributed to it becoming completely dormant. I still haven't had a cold sore again!

So I used to break out a lot as a kid. I first got them from the sun and stress while abandoned in the desert when I was 5 with my mom, and I got the next one when I was about 7 or 8, and then they never stopped. My mom was in the medical field and took medicine for it and never shared any, so I would just suffer. They’d crack which hurt so much and were extremely embarrassing. I tried the creams which helped with the tingle but just made them scab up if you didn’t catch it immediately. I got a prescription for Vacyclovir (generic if Valtrex), and yes you can take it for the STD version, but you can take it for cold sores. The second I feel any tingle or see the faintest red mark, I pop a “loading dose” and it stops it in its tracks. I take another loading dose 12 hours later, sometimes half of a loading dose, and it’s gone. I HIGHLY suggest that everyone does this who struggles with cold sores/fever blisters. They’re so stigmatized and some of the worst bullying I experienced as a kid was because of cold sores then because of being the poor kid in a rich school. I used to envy people who didn’t have to struggle with then, and I still do at times, but this medicine has been a life saver. I’m a Chef, so I can’t have breakouts since people are so weird about it. I wore a sick mask once and people gave me hell for that since it was a bad one and took a while to heal. Again, get Vacyclovir (hope I’m spelling it right) and it’ll change your lives ❤

I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis 5 yrs after the initial outbreak, and my Rheumatologist stated that recent studies may show a link between the two (but not proven yet). I’m no doctor, but I’m certain they HAVE to be though. I also experience trigeminal nerve pain a few days before the outbreak on the right side of my face and up the side of my head. Trigeminal pain, honestly, is worst than the RA and the HSV blisters. As I get older, now 40, I don’t get breakouts as often praise the LORD! After 10 years of marriage, my husband has never contracted it. Maybe he’s one of the lucky A-Symptomatics out there. Thank you for such a wonderful breakdown, with imagery and everything! Fortunately I didn't believe them and was completely cured after taking Titanium Drops specifically created for me by an Homeopath. All symptoms were completely GONE and have never returned in about 20 years now. All 6 implants fell out on their own over several years, because my allergy cause my jawbone to move away from the Titanium, thus causing the implants to be loose and fall out. I was driven to a doctor with this sudden onset of vertigo and this good, old, very experienced doctor asked me if I ever get cold sores. I thought it was an odd question. Then he asked me if I get them up my nose as well. Then he informed me that its very possible that I got it in my ear as well and it will resolve within a few days. It sure did! So now I know. If I get a tickle in my ear canal, and then can't walk normal, I sure know whats happening.

Recently I’ve come to know they flare up when I have big dental work. 2 years ago I had 2 big fillings replaced. I was in chair for 2 hours. I had immediate pain in 2 adjacent teeth. Many X-rays and CT scans later nothing was seen to explain the pain. I eventually had a root canal on one tooth…no help, so the tooth was extracted and I have an implant now. Still have occasional pain. Going through the same now with the other tooth. Looking back and after hearing this explanation of how these buggers live in the ganglion of the nerve, I’m thinking I just had nerve pain. Not one dental expert I went to ( and I saw 3 different ones) suggested this might me an cause. I’m sitting here now healing from the recent implant and 7 sores near where he did the surgery. I feel that those two teeth were removed for for no reason. I still get the random pains. I paid over 11k for all this as well. What an eye opener. If you have these in your mouth and get flare ups after dental work. Do not resort to extractions if there is no a sign of tooth infection. The pain is from the virus. Now I know!

I used to work for a group of OB/GYNE'S. It never failed that we would get a call that a patient had sex on Saturday (usually someone new to them) and by Tuesday it was too painful for them to sit down! It was almost always genital herpes!
We had one OB patient who was on her 5th child. Close to the due date they would check if the virus was active or not. If it is - they can't have a vaginal delivery as it's too dangerous for the baby. Her first 4 were delivered vaginally but she tested reactive right before delivering #5! She had never had an outbreak in all the years since her original exposure! Then she had to go home and tell her husband why she was having a c-section!

That doesn't make any sense and this honestly makes me angry there is absolutely no reason a woman with HSV-2 cant give birth naturally, you basically lied and gave her uterine scar tissue for no reasons, women with hsv 2 are unlikely to pass to baby this way. Medically unnecessary. I would've gotten a new doctor

A lot of natural medicines posted here. Chickweed and lysine. I'll try them both.
But most importantly: Use anti-viral!!! As soon as one of your usual flare-up spots starts tingling, then rub that cream on, and take those pills! You could stop the entire flare-up in it's tracks (you will still be infectious, though, just a lot less). If you got there too late with the anti-viral, then keep taking anti-viral, and add on lysine, chickweed and/or any natural medicine you think works.

I got HSV1 as a child, although my Mum is a nurse and never let us share drinks, kiss on the lips etc.. At 14 I was having regular horrendous breakouts, they were very painful, unsightly and made me feel so ashamed and dirty.
My Mum heard someone at the hospital recommend kenacomb ointment, which is actually for your ears. It has been life changing for me, I’m now nearly 35 and have been using it 20 years. At 21 I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis, an autoimmune disease, interesting that there are so many others with AI diseases in the comments.

Now, when I get the first inkling of an outbreak (you all know, your lip or nose starts to tingle) I take two pills and 12 hours later, take 2 more....the outbreak is GONE! I mean, there might be a very, very small puffiness but I never get any large blistering or swelling like I did before. Ill even add a topical antiviral on affected area as well, but prob dont need it. Hope this helps someone.

I have suffered with cold sores on my nose for 20 years, never on my lips always on the side or on the bridge of my nose, always starts off with my glands under my jaw and in front of my ears becoming enlarged, then an area of my nose goes dry then peels and out come the sores,
Don't know what triggers them off have gone 1 year without then get 1 a month for 6 months. Never really tried any medicines as a doctor once told me, you have herpesvirus for the rest of your life, if they blister then the virus has passed,.
It's just embarrassing when they are on the nose as people only associate cold sores with the mouth area, it's nice to know other people suffer with them on thier nose too.

My husband has HSV-1, and told me when we were dating. He wouldn't kiss me until his outbreak was over and more time had passed. Oddly enough, his outbreaks seem to have almost stopped now, and we've been married for 30 years.
I myself have never contracted it; I could be asymptomatic, but in 2007 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had surgery, chemo and radiation, and I would've expected it to show up then, as shingles did. I had chickenpox as a child, so that's where that came from. I just would think, with my immune system so compromised, that it would've shown up then.
Anyway, this was really interesting and informative; I'm going to make sure I show this to my husband. Thanks again!

One's immune system is a DEFINITE factor in how bad things get. During the peak of the AIDS crisis, one of the more painful symptoms was patients having sores from Herpes not only on and around the lips, but all around the inner surface of the mouth and down the throat. Anyone else with a severely compromised immune system could also end up with far worse outbreaks than are typical.
The stigma around Herpes is deeply frustrating. It wasn't actually looked down upon until recently, the 1960's if I remember right - it was just "one of those things" that happened to just about everyone, and while it could be uncomfortable few cared about it on a social level. Then along came a pharmaceutical company that discovered a drug that would reduce the chance of a Herpes outbreak causing a sufficient viral load to infect another person. They put this new drug on the market, but it wasn't selling well. This company then ran an ad campaign discussing the "secret shame" of Herpes, generating a social stigma to help provide a ready stream of customers.

I’m so glad to see that I’m not the only one that sees the mind manipulation pharmaceutical companies hold. Yes, many pharmaceutical drugs are helpful, but there’s ALWAYS a secondary repercussion, and it’s not always unintentional in my opinion. Money is the ultimate goal for the greedy pharmaceutical companies. They are responsible for many of the suffering. 😢

I think that calling herpes a sexually transmitted disease caused a lot of that stigma too. When they were just called "cold sores", or "fever blisters" there wasn't really any stigmas attached to them.

Thanks for the great info! I've had cold sores since I was a little kid, and my mother has them. We're the only two in my immediate family who get them, so, thanks Mom. 🙄 I'm super careful not to touch my eyes in either prodromal or active stage.
A woman in my community married a guy with herpes 2. He didn't tell her about it before marriage. It wasn't long until she had outbreaks so severe, it damn near incapacitated her, plus it obviously affected her future sex life. She _sued_ him for not disclosing it, and won a substantial settlement. Not enough money in the world for someone to go through what she did.

I could copy your entire first paragraph. My mom didn't give care about hygienic measures when I was a kid, and she gets cold sores, so she obviously just shared a cup with me when I was a kid and infected me. F you for that, mom. She made me share cups with other kids as well. When I was 5 I "got wise" and refused any cups she presented me in children's parties and family gatherings that I didn't know was fresh from the cupboard.
I am super paranoid about my eyes, so even if I don't have any signs of outbreak, I will never touch my eyes with the insides of my fingers, and if I do, I wash it immediately in water (and sometimes a bit of hand soap).
I get pretty mild outbreaks, which is the same place on my lip every time, with severity ranging from 1 small "blister" to 5-6 of them if my body is very worn out.
Interesting variation: I used acliclovir immediately when I last noticed tingling on that spot on my lip. This prevented any sores from forming. However...! Here's the catch: When I did that, I prevented sores from forming on my lip, but the outbreak was still going on, so instead I got an inflammation in my gums on the EXACT spot behind the usual spot on my lip. I used the cream. Next time, I'll have my doc prescribe the pills, so I can pop pills early on as well. Maybe the entire outbreak will be contained.

I notice that I am more susceptible to cold sores when my body's energy levels are low. Like when I've been tired or overloaded with work for days or weeks.
When the tingling inside my lips comes on I notice now days and respond with topicals. It greatly helps even to the point were outbreaks are much less frequent.
I didn't know what these symptoms meant though until you explained it just now.
So this is helpful to me.
I'm also very fond of the concept of 'life long learning'. A great idea moving forward. I was considered a poor student at school, but I never knew it. What I DID know however, was that I was actually quite bright. I was rebellious and disruptive and I guess my teachers mistook this for stupid.

I had chicken pox as a child and my mother who had not had it before caught it from me. She suffered much more as an adult with chicken pox. About ten years later my mother started to get incidents of being clumsy, tripping and dropping things. This was diagnosed as multiple sclerosis. It was a very slowly progressing form of MS and she was able to cope for a long time using a wheeled walking frame.
I strongly suspect that her MS was caused by the chicken pox infection.
When she was age 90 she had significant mobility problems, so I changed jobs to be closer and my wife and I moved in with her to look after her.
She had a fairly rapid decline over three years and died from a stroke in 2015 aged 93.

My ex husband had hsv2 when we began dating and he didn't know it... he had an outbreak one day and chalked it up to a mild case of dermatitis. We got intimate and I was infected just like that. :( I was so devastated and felt like I had been tricked. I stayed with him for a long time, partially because deep down I thought that no one else would ever want me.
Long story short, I am now married to someone else who is also a carrier and we are both in "remission." :) The diagnosis does suck, but it's not a death sentence. An estimated 67% of the world population is carrying one form of herpes virus.

Had a boyfriend years ago that had HSV-1 so I made a Chickweed salve (I read that this is helpful in healing it quickly). Then waited until he had a breakout on his lip. Healed FAST! I had never had one before but started to feel (at a later date) a tingle on my lip as he had explained he felt when one would start. Used the salve & it never broke out. Have never had that feeling again or broken out. As far as I know now, he rarely broke out again. Try it! Infuse fresh chickweed in olive oil using a glass jar sitting in a water bath in a pan in the oven. Very low heat, can vent with the oven door open. Strain after the oil has a lovely green color from when the cells break open. In a double boiler (glass or ceramic bowl over water in a saucepan on the stove top) melt some beeswax & stir it in. Place the coated spoon in the freezer to cool. When the consistency is how you like it, pot in glass jar & keep in a cool place out of the sun. Use a spoon, popsickle stick, etc., to remove a small bit for use. Do not contaminate with placing your fingers in the jar. Cheers!

Never had one until after my 1st grade class received the big round vaccination at school in 1967 in East Texas. It was a nightmare then on. It took 2 decades for me to understand what the triggers to the flare ups were/are. My triggers are any kind of minor or major pain to the lips, including chapped lips, getting hit on the lips, getting to thirsty, to much sun, temps below freezing, food to hot, hot peppers (but stress maybe just once). But if any pain of the slightest is inflicted to the lips, lots of inexpensive Carmex continuously for up to three days on the tingle spot causes a great reduction in the size of the flare up or even nothing shows up at all. If applied immediately to the tingle and or trauma spot, then the soothing phenol in the Carmex ( I suspect ) scares the little devils to run away, back to their hiding place, just like in the video. It's as if they have been alerted to guard you (all hands man your battle stations) and being opportunists at the same time, going into a payback rage, wanting to protect you and send their contagion to the outside world, to whatever it was that started the disturbance to begin with.

A few months ago my jaw swelled and it seemed that I had a bug bite under my chin, it turns out that when I went to the dermatologist he told me that I had HSV 1, that sprouted out in that area, my shoulder and back, nothing came out on the lip, I have never felt such strong pain in the skin, luckily I caught it soon and I was able to treat it with acyclovir, It is comforting to know that so many people have these experiences, still being a "taboo"

Atleast your aren't contagious sexually. Somebody would literally have to kiss or sit on the areabto contract it. The likelihood of passing is like .01% for you.

My first and only real outbreak started out with what I imagine testicular torsion feels like, noticed some purple lines spider-webbing on part of my shaft, then the sores. After taking 3 days worth of valacyclovir, it went away rather quickly. However, my groin lymph node swelled and stuck around for about 2 weeks.
All that occurred 9+ years ago with no other outbreaks.

Taking L-Lysine supplements of 2000-3000 mg, 3-4 times per day can slow outbreaks and reduce healing time for some people. Lauric acid may also help to minimize the risk of subsequent outbreaks, if consumed regularly.

    Brain herpes.
Earlier this year my dad fell and hit his head, hard. It ended up killing him. But before it did the hospital people just couldn't figure out what was going on with him. One thing they thought, and his symptoms did seem to match it, was a herpe brain infection. So they ended up scrapping that, I'm not sure why because they never did give a final diagnosis. Dad said he was ready to die (he was 89) and he was in terrible pain. They treated the pain. Dad didn't lose memory.
