Due to strange circumstances the Imperial family has never been changed or replaced. They can trace their lineage back to Emperor Kinmei (539 to 571 AD/CE) with evidence but claim ancestry all the way back to Emperor Jimmu (660 BC/BCE) Either way they are the longest lasting dynasty to keep power. The reason their circumstances are strange is because whenever someone took over, namely the shoguns, they opted to keep the Imperial family there as a symbol.

    • @LibeliumDragonfly
      @LibeliumDragonfly 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

TBH the imperial family really only had actual administrative power for less than 200 years, then it's either a puppet of the aristocrats, or the shogunate.
If you have a very robust puppet system, why change it?

The other dynasties did lose the support of the peoples, it never did happened in Japan (they did remain the symbol of the Shintoism) so if any Shogun would try to trow imperial family would be a massiv uprusing.
Even at the end of WW2 they didn't sign the surrender until the allies did promis the emperor be allowed to remain the nominal head of state. (what is kinda interesting because the allies did agree about the war doesn't end until Germany,Italy,Japan doesn't sign an unconditional surrender, Germany and Italy did sign a unconditional surrender but Japan did have this one condition)

@@lucykaede3663 The condition was agreed with the wording of something like "the Emperor is subordinate to the Occupation Commander" or something to that effect, meaning the US military commander was the boss of the Emperor until the occupation came to an end in 1952.

You and me literally had the same anime experience I only ever watched dragon ball before and wanted to find a good one. It’s so short and tells a great story, no filler content no drawn out inner monologues etc. If you’re ever down to read manga, Berserk is the one. Every page is a gorgeous piece of art and even tho it’s very long there actually isn’t much filler at all.

14:00 besides some exceptions like our teacher toled us - the kanji combination for hand+paper means in japan tegami=letter but in china the same kanji combination means toilet paper
hiragana is kind of the the basic and you could write 100% in it
children learn japanese that way first too and then step by step learn to substitute in the kanji
katakana is like another text font/colour it is basically the same as hiragana but they use for words of non japanese origins
like the "kindergarten" in (american) english which is a german word
iirc they ealier on tried to make up for every new stuff that needed a japanese word new kanjis but that got way too much way too fast
and so they take the now the non-japanese word try to read/pronounce it with there japanese syllables and then try to write it with their japanese letters
and yes most of the time it is a mess - especially that almost all japanese syllables end on a vowel so they have to work around
gas chromatograph turns into something like gasu kurumatugarufu to try to write one of the crazier ones I had seen once
some things have even two names like the office - it has a japanese name written in hiragana(kanji) and you could - iirc - use オ-フィ-ス -> o-fi-su (office)
katakana is 99% like hiragana just used for non-japanese words they just have a few extra combinations to create some extra sounds
since most of these words come from the english language if you can read these 50+ symbols you can have a good guessing game what the word means without any real japanese knowledge
kanji is like the third text font - doesn't really add new syllable/sounds and works more like a substitution / caesar chiffre
like using windings text font in word...
hiragana syllable 1 can be replaced with kanji a
    syllable 2 -> kanji b
    syllables 1+2 -> kanji c
it just gets funny at the point that most syllables have several kanjis they can be replaced with
and most kanji have more then one reading this way too
since you hear in spoken japanese not what text font is used - it makes no difference their and it all depends on what is spoken about/the context
why it is still kind of helpfull in the current written japanese
    1) it has a lot of hononyms (same writting but different meaning based on context) like the japanese word for writing and the japanese word for drawing are the same - same spelling in hiragana but the hiragana syllables get substituted with different kanjis in both situation so while reading you get to which is which but when you hear someone speaking these words you have to guess based on the context
(and some very few can differ on how you emphasize the syllables i.e.: hana->flower/nose)
    2) most likely the point in (1) comes from a lack of possible combinations with the around 50 syllables - while we have with our abc... more freedom?
there are some words in japanese which are 1 or 2 syllables long and are replaced by one kanji alone - so in these cases the kanji obviously means the word it represents
words that are made up of more than one kanji can mean the meanings of the indivudal kanjis combined sometimes - and sometimes not... ;/
a nicer example is the japanese word for fireworks -> ha-na-bi
    hana -> flower
bi -> fire (one reading for the kanji here)
=> fire flowers based on how the fireworks look in the sky and written with the kanjis for flower and fire in this case 花火
though the flower kanji has only one reading as hana iirc 花
the fire kanji kan be read as ka, hi, bi... depending on the word it is used in... 火
    3) (classic) japanese has no space between words and no period [.] at the end of a sentence
it is just one long line of text (that changes more and more with modern times as far as I know)
so the switches between hiragana, kanji and katakana help with with following the text structure where a sentence starts/ends
most is written in kanji - foreign word in katakana and grammar related stuff in hiragana
"I'm reading a book" would get the [I], [read] and [book] written in kanji and the [-ing] part of reading in hiragana - as a simplyfied example
already too much forgotten from my 2 classes but it seams at least still some details I can remember
sorry for the text flood in my bad english just had a bit of a nostalgia attack from good old times :P

Your question regarding since when the current dinasty ruled over Japan made me wonder as well. So I looked it up online: Mythically the dynasty traces back until 660BC, historically until 539AD. Every Emperor since then claimed to be part of the same family. But (of course) the line of succession didn‘t always go from father to son. It sometimes also went to a brother or a cousin of the previous monarch and in a few occasions the also had a female emperor, but all of them had a common ancestor who was emperor.
Now since 1780 the line of succession went always directly from father to son.

To answer your question about Japanese writing, yes, you have to use all 3 writing systems. As mentioned in the video, Japanese has no spaces and the three systems of writing have a role they play. So if you used only one writing system it'd be like you using no spaces in any European language. For example, hundarnalekerochspringermedbarnenvarjedag. Of course, given some time, you can make out what's being written, but it takes some time. Same in Japanese. Here's what the writing systems do. 平仮名(ひらがな) (hiragana) is the basic writing system that could technically be used to write everything, but is usually used for words that are 100% Japanese or different grammatic helper words and stuff. 片仮名(カタカナ)(katakana) is the other basic writing system. Hiragana and katakana basically cover all the same sounds; difference is the use. Katakana is used to write out words that are foreign. For example, words like viking, Sweden, minecraft, ikea, smörgåsbord, etc. Lastly, 漢字 (kanji). Obviously kanji are the Chinese characters, however, GeographyNow failed to mention something about Kanji. Just because Kanji are Chinese in origin doesn't mean it's mutuallyintelligible. Kanji are the Chinese characters that Japan picked and chose to use when China first had influence over Japan like a 1000 years ago. So naturally, some of the characters can be considered old or have different meanings. This is especially noticeable when compared to Mandarin's simplified Chinese writing system, where, for example, 漢字 has become 汉字, or 東京 Tokyo has become 东京, or 犬 dog has become 狗. And don't even get me started on the pronunciations of the characters, because even that has changed over time. However, the important thing is the use of Kanji in Japanese. Since these characters represent an idea or word rather than a sound, you basically use them for the beginnings of verbs, adjectives, adverbs, so-on so-forth, and for nouns that can be written in kanji. To compare them to a more European writing style, it's kind of like how in Latin words are made up of roots that come together to form a bigger word. 東京 Tokyo is "East Capital", 飛行機 airplane is "fly go machine", 電話 phone is "electric speech/conversation", etc etc. So, to end with an example, I'll write one sentence in just hiragana and then the same one using all 3 systems. Hopefully this helps explain your question.

Another one I've been missing while scrolling through the comments would be "Great Teacher Onizuka", an anime about a young teacher trying to do his job. It does have some cringe moments that were considered comedy 20 years ago but overall it's an amazing series.
Of course other than these painfully obvious choices we have "One Punch Man" (a parody of basically every Hero-story), "Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th Mobile Suit Team" (a great introduction into the mecha genre of anime for people new to anime), and to completely switch genres "Koisuru Asteroid" (a cute slice-of-life show about some school girls doing geoscience projects).

Since you asked, I'd like to recommend 2 anime series to you.
The first one is Girls' last tour. It only has 12 episodes. The manga it's based on finished with only 6 volumes. The anime adapts most of it (first 4 volumes). So it sadly doesn't adapt everything but I think they chose a pretty good place to stop and the art is really good. Here's information on what it is about:
Civilization is dead, but Chito and Yuuri are still alive. So they hop aboard their beloved Kettenkrad motorbike and aimlessly wander the ruins of the world they once knew. Day after hopeless day, they look for their next meal and fuel for their ride. But as long as the two are together, even an existence as bleak as theirs has a ray or two of sunshine in it, whether they're sucking down their fill of soup or hunting for machine parts to tinker with. For two girls in a world full of nothing, the experiences and feelings the two share give them something to live for...
The second is Made in Abyss. It currently has 13 episodes and a movie (the movie continues the story from the manga so it's actually canon). It will get a second season soon in July. The story is interesting, the visuals are beautiful even in the series and it has an awesome soundtrack. Here's a description of the story:
The enormous cave system, known as the Abyss, is the only unexplored place in the world. Nobody knows how deep down goes this titanic pit, inhabited by strange and wondrous creatures and full of mysterious ancient relics which purpose in unknown to modern man. Generations of bold adventurers have been drawn by the cryptic depths of the Abyss. In course of time those bold enough to explore the dangerous pit came to be known as "Cave Raiders." In Oosu, the town at the edge of the Abyss, there lives a little orphan named Rico, who dreams of becoming as great a cave raider as her mother was and solving the great mystery of the pit. One day exploring the murky depths she stumbles upon a little boy, who turns out to be a robot...

Another would be Youjo Senki (The saga of Tanya the Evil) its an anime about an alternate WW1 were magic exists, we follow Tanya von Degurechaff an War Orphan of alternate German Empire as she climbs the military ladder. Log Horizon is another, as an Game got updated to their newest expansion every player got Transporte into the game, now Shiroe the protagonist creates a government with other people like him of their ˋˋplayer city´´ (lot of economy and intrigue while also haveing some action scenes while being accurate RPG representation). Now ones that don‘t have anything to do with things you may learn. Death note is an absolute classic and widely acepted as one of the best, it‘s about an genius highschool boy who hates criminals who finds a notebook that can kill anyone you know the name and face of. I don't watch much anime anymore, and I know loads of them have already been suggested here. So I'll just suggest one that I doubt has been mentioned here; Moribito. Its based on a Japanese book series, but is only one season long based on just one of the books. Its got a lot less of the typical Japanese wackiness that might be in a lot of more popular shows likely suggested to you already. But its got really good characters and builds a believable world and tells an interesting story.
There was also a live action show based on the same book series that's quite a bit longer. Never watched that but it was apparently popular in Japan at the time it was being released.
Also, Japanese fun fact just cause I hadn't see this mentioned in any of these videos you've watched about Japan and you might be interested to know. Japan doesn't call itself Japan, they call their the country Nippon or Nihon; and Japanese is Nihongo. The word Japan is kind of contested in origin and is believed to likely have been something of a mistranslation, if I recall right, with the Portuguese translating the name used by the Malay to refer to Japan. From the Malay Jepang to Portuguese Japao and then later Japan; which was the accepted translation by English of the time explaining why "Japan" or variations of it, ended up being the common name. But the Japanese still typically call the country Nippon; tho they know who you mean if you say "Japan" haha.

"There is always a dispute about islands" 😂 there's a beautiful anime called "Giovanni's Island" based on real life experiences of Japanese people after Russians occupied their island after WW2
For "easy to digest" Animes I can recommend everything from Studio Ghibli, Netflix has a bunch of Animes (currently obsessed with "Bubble")
Japan uses all 3 alphabets simultaneously. I tried learning the language a few years ago and it actually only took us 2 days to learn the hiragana and katakana alphabets. Learning Kanji is the hard part but when you know your Kanji it makes reading and writing a bit easier than using hiragana only. And katakana is mostly used for words/names that were adopted from other countries.

how long back does the bloodline of the emperor of japan go
The Japanese imperial family's genealogy is said to date back over 2,600 years, to the legendary Emperor Jimmu in 660 BCE. However, the accuracy of this genealogy is difficult to confirm, and some parts of it may be based on myth or legend.
also, to quote wikipedia on this one: "Historical evidence for the first 25 emperors is mythical, but there is sufficient evidence of an unbroken hereditary line since the early 6th century"
who are the oldest hereditary monarchies in the world
The oldest hereditary monarchy in the world is the Imperial House of Japan, which has a lineage dating back over 2,600 years to 660 BC. Another one of the oldest hereditary monarchies is the Kingdom of Sweden, with a lineage dating back over 1,000 years to 997 AD.

Regarding Anime recommendations, based on what you said it’s best staying away from “Shounen” and “Shoujo” genres of Anime/Manga as their are aimed towards younger audiences and are usually full of fights and screaming, like One Piece or Naruto.
“Seinen” might be something you like, its aimed towards the adult demographic, anime/manga like Violet Evergarden, A Silent Voice, Vinland Saga, Evangelion, Death Note, etc have very serious stories and themes that fits its targeted demographic.

So for an Anime recomendation I would recomend you Vinland Saga. Since you didn't really state what genre you like it's not easy to pick one out especially with how many different shows there are. Since you said that you have not watched Anime in a long time and want something that is easy to digest I tried to pick one where they don't use typical anime tropes that you probably don't know about making it easier to watch. If you do decide to watch it I would recomend you watch the first 3 to 4 episodes together as thei are ment to be watched together. As a side note the Anime is not yet complete with the first season being more like a prolge but I still find it to be a very good show that can stand alone and just has an open ending for now.

Anime-wise, there are two fairly recent anime that are very popular that come to mind. Both are very short at the moment, so it shouldnt be too hard to get into, or get a feel for.
Jujutsu Kaisen - Follows the story of modern - day sorcerers stopping cursed spirits from wreaking havoc on the country.
Demon Slayer - More old timey, but similar formula. They are trying to hunt down the Demon King and the higher ranking demons he controls.
If you are interested in fighting and fantastical conflicts, I highly recommend them. First is one season, second is 2 seasons and a movie.

Regarding Animes: I kinda like most of the 'Studio Ghibli' films, especially "Princess Mononoke". And something that left a huge mark on me was an anime called "Berserk". A few years ago a friend of mine gave me a dvd box with the original Berserk Version of 1997 and simply said "watch this". Based on the European Middle Ages. At the same time quiet, philosophical and yet gory. Have tried some newer adaptations of it, but they couldn't get near the old stuff. If you can get your hands in sweden on it, try it. It was so weird, but in a good way. th-cam.com/video/IXL5r3n862U/w-d-xo.html Greetings from Germany

If you don't want anime with fights that last for several episodes, I'd suggest just staying away from any sort of shounen manga with hundreds of episodes like Naruto, One Piece, Bleach etc. Aside from that, go nuts, watch whatever you want. Also, there are plenty of 12-episode or 24-episode anime series, although many of the 12-episode ones don't have very conclusive endings since they are often glorified ads (albeit very enjoyable ads) for the original manga, light novel, or visual novel.

  • @MuriKakari

It's probably a little annoying, but it's written as a skit show, so it won't drag things out so much as repeat. It imagines the countries as humans (very stereotypical, but pretty equally mocking everything), so it might fit in with the kind of things you already seem interested in on this channel. I liked it as a linguist because in Japanese and in Dub they went for the stereotypical accents of each country (as perceived in Japanese and English) You could look up the episodes with Scandinavian and Nordic countries.

There are so many different anime, it's hard to recommend--with as many as there are, I'd say there's an anime for everyone, but finding the perfect one to start with is tough. I'll throw my hat in on Fullmetal Alchemist and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. FMA is decent-sized but not one of the hundreds of episodes-long Weekly Shonen Jump titles, it has a gripping story and well-developed universe, great characters, and a decent amount of humor that tends to avoid getting 'stupid' or 'annoying' and I feel is one of the overall best-written anime stories of all time.
Most fans will tell you just to watch Brotherhood and ignore the original series, but I disagree. To explain: the first series was made in 2004 based on an ongoing manga by HIromu Arakawa. Since it was far from completion, so the anime team wrote their own backstory and about halfway through the series completely veered into a story they made themselves inspired by the manga, as it were. Then, in 2007, as the FMA manga was wrapping up, they cashed in on the popularity of FMA to make a second series, Brotherhood, that adapted FMA more faithfully and kept its proper story. And Brotherhood is, make no mistake, the better anime, which is why people like to pretend the original series didn't exist and actually recommend against watching it. But Brotherhood was made shortly after the first series and was made for fans of that series, for people who had seen it, so many of the early manga stories, which are as good as the rest of the series, were skipped or super condensed so they could get to the 'new true story' faster, and I feel early Brotherhood suffers from not having them.
My recommendation is to watch the first FMA series, and then if you find it at least enjoyable watch Brotherhood immediately after so that you can fully appreciate what both bring (and hey, while most of us will say Brotherhood is the better of the two series, you might be one who ends up liking the original anime more).
