I was never a big fan of the so-called sherry bombs such as the standard 12yo Macallan and Glendronach. Thought they were OK, but they didn't knock my socks off. Then, early this year I came across an independent release (Single Malts of Scotland) of 12yo Highland Park that had been matured in what must have been a very good, very wet sherry butt and bottled at cask strength. It was absolutely divine. That distinctive Highland Park heather character was still very much in evidence, but it also had deep, dark fruit and chocolate notes that elevated the taste to another dimension entirely. Best Highland Park I've ever had of any age or source and it was priced at only $95.00. I stumbled upon this completely by accident, buying the first bottle without having any prior knowledge about it. I ended up buying 4 bottles, giving one as a gift to a good friend. So if you ever hear of an exceptional example of sherry matured Scotch, such as the Ancnoc 24 reviewed here or the independent HP I found, you really owe it to yourself to try some of it.
Nice dram for sure! Got a couple stashed away already because I wouldn't be surprised if this disappears altogether....whisky production was low in the early 2000s, so we're going to see the 25y olds jump up in price even more. That's my prediction at least. How would you compare it with the Tamdhu 18? They are a similar price point and I kind of felt the Tamdhu drinks older than 18yrs? Cheers Rob!

Hey Rob, just wanted to let you know that the Ancnoc 24 is about to be discontinued. The 18 will still be produced, but the 24 might get replaced.... maybe with a 21 year old?

WB230571 shows 9 Feb 2023. WB238406 shows 28 Apr 2023. Those are whiskybase references, in case it's not clear. I've come to prefer YYYY-MM-DD formats for clarity's sake, but also they sort usefully. Out of my range, but thanks for the review.

I will need to revisit. Based on the 21/22 bottle it is a little tannin strong and not at all sherry.. For that reason the 18 was my favourite.

at 300+$ range, Cognacs/Aramgnacs or Rums offer much, MUCH better nectars ; cask strength/barrel proof BOURBONS are a-m-a-z-i-n-g at this price range.

That’s an incredible score this year
