There is actually a work-around to have multiple displays, its done with a "Display Link" adapter the Display Link driver. There are many videos on this. You're welcome. 😁
This is actually crazy. Its just dawned on me that today you can run full productions and mixing on a macbook AIR. Few years ago that was mostly a toy for like surfing the web and doing homework. The M1 chip had such a fast path from announcement to product, and such an advancement in technology that its hard to grasp the fact that we just made a major step forward in computing. I don't know if the M1 specs are much "better" than say ryzen, but the fact that apple can build the entire thing to be optimized for the chip is an incredible performance booster. I run PC now and wont probably change until maybe 2-3 generations if apple seems to be behaving and the value is still there.
M1 is more powerful especially per watt than say an AMD Ryzen 5900HX... which would be it's price competitor. However, compatibility and stability are still a mess for M1 macs. Hopefully in the future more devs support the M1X when that arrives. If your specific program is built for M1 and performance well then I would say it is a cost effective performance beast, otherwise with any first gen product ... Wait for the M1X.
I own a MacBook pro with an M1 chip and it has never let me down so far after almost half a year. I'd say its biggest drawback personally is that when the SSD fails, you cannot replace it whereas most laptops have this feature. It shouldn't fail because it's solid-state but if you prefer to have control over what you can change within the MacBook, I wouldn't recommend it. I know this is something Apple has been doing for years but I thought I'd mention it in case. Other than that, it's super powerful and I've run over 200 tracks in logic and it works just fine.
What about the plugins you are running and the latency? Are you running at 64ms cuz that’s what I’d need to record for, and how cpu extensive are the plugins you are using or are they stock? I’m looking to get the m1 8 or 16gb and I use fl studio with waves plugins and I’m moving to UAD soon, want to make the right laptop purchase
@@reallnikka123 Should work no issue with 64ms in a project. However, the more plugins and midi data you have in your project, the higher your buffer will need to be. Some plugins are more cpu intensive than others. Luckily waves plugins are now supported on m1 chips so upgrading to v13 is no issue. Make sure all your other plugins are compatible with the new chip because some sacrifices may have to be made.

What the MacBook Air M1 is bringing to the table is really big! Computer power and no noise of a fan! There are power hungry synthesizers like the ones by u-he, and I want to use lots of effects without having to worry about it. If the MacBook Air M1 can do that without even blinking: that's big! Do vyou have the 8GB ram? Is it equivalent to something like 16GB on an intel mac or how does it work going from a maxed out ram intel to one with very little?
How much ram and storage has your model? I need to upgrade my old Macbook Pro this year (I have a 2012 model, fully upgraded to 16GB of ram and 1TB of ssd storage and still going strong, but it doesn't support Big Sur), I need a laptop for "general productivity" (I have a Windows desktop as daw), but I wouldn't mind using it for music stuffs, too (like the Moog Model 15 app or to run Traktor occasionally). I'm a bit worried especially by the 8GB amount of the basic models (less by the built in storage, as I can manage with an external ssd).
Hey Jon. Great videos as always man! Thanks. Just had a question about your live set on this. So its running abelton with alot of midi channels etc? You mentioned theres a sweetspot before delay and lag starts happening. What is that sweetspot exactly? Also is abelton optimized for M1 now natively? or are you still working with Rosetta? And have you checked the ssd for the issue about to much overwriting % or whatever that people were complaining about? something about lowering the overall life of the ssd aka the whole computer. Cheers
Same situation but think I am going to go M1. Got a feeling Apple is selling these cheap to get developers on board... M2 will cost lots more... plus soon you will see plugins that only run on the M1 architecture... just my thought process.
Does the MacBook Air support thunderbolt 4? If so you could hook up more displays... Oh wait... Apple thunderbolt display out is crippled (unless you are using apple displays.)
Lol, every next day your studio looks closer to a spaceship D: OMG!. That set up with one cable is crazy!!!! OMG Jon, you have all the equipment I have ever dreamed of. That's crazy looking at your Vlog, all those years 0.0
I got the I7 pro last summer for about 3k with decent specs. it has this little crack where potato chips leftovers and dust get stuck between the screen and that pads lol. This little shelf that is impossible to clean without vacuuming it. Even that is pretty hard. The battery is a huge disappointment, it runs out so quickly I feel like I am always connected to a power cable. The Touch Bar is pretty useless and I would assume also drains power. In terms of processing its another world than my previous old MacBook Air but it really struggles with system overload in the "last" phases in Logic with 70-100+ tracks in the mix down. That was a bit disappointing honestly. It gets heated af, and the fan sounds like a 737. So I might think of this one when they come with new versions.
While the M1 MacBooks natively support just one monitor, the M1 Mac Mini does natively support up to two external monitors - one via the HDMI port and a second via USB-C.
I would NOT recommend using a Macbook Air to do live visuals with (at real shows, not just practice). The 13" Pro and Air only has integrated graphics, it doesn't have discrete graphics card. While music production might not make your laptop thermal throttle, live visuals is HEAVY on GPU. More than video editing even. You have multiple layers of 1080p or 4K visuals being rendered at the same time with live fx being applied. Live Visuals are some of the most taxing on computer you can do. If your plan is to run your music AND visuals off the same computer you are going to get into problems fast. It's much safer to have a separate computer JUST for visuals, that way if visuals freeze up, at least the music can still keep playing.

Hey Jon, just discovered your channel. Great video! Answered the exact questions I had. One question outstanding, have you tried using music software/ DJ/performance software and stream video at the same time on the M1 Air? Assuming that you do streaming live.
i got mine right after we had a chat on insta and what i have to say is that i can bring it to its limits when running OBS with 2 camlinks, an interface, a 4k display and ableton with 100+ tracks + plugins. Are you using an external SSD? If not, SSD wear may be a major issue. They do wear out in time (especially with heavy use like video editing in 4K). And then, you will have a doorstop.
If you can live wirh 1080p and 30fps you may use an old AppleTV and use a third Display via Airplay. Which is not that bad for Office/Demo use. (Of course no gameplay)

I think you can use two 4K external displays with a thunderbolt hub (OWC)
Does yours have the 8gb ram?
Apple launched the iPad Pro 2021 with the M1 chip inside and up to 16 GB of RAM. At WWDC in June next month, Apple will announce new OS and also new MacBook Pro’s with an even more powerful chip and also more RAM options. Finally, they will announce Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro coming to the new iPad Pro 2021 with M1. This will be a big game changer in the industry.
Out of curiosity, why?
@@nebucatz3751 Do you refer to the more powerful MacBook Pro or iPad Pro M1?
@@emiel333 The iPad.
How does it feel to be wrong?
will komplete kontroll s88 mk2 work with m1pro? anyones knows? my m1pro is running Komplete control software.
Is it 8gb ram or 16gb?
2:55 Wait, does every plugin (serum, sylenth1, waves, soundtoys, etc.) work under Rosetta? Just starting your DAW through Rosetta and every vst works fine?
yes I works for me 100%
@@Jonsine that's awesome
subbed, i love your content. we family now lol
Hello there, I’m convinced I’m getting myself the MBA M1. Could you or anyone tell me: I’m on a budget and was wondering what GB I’ll need. I won’t be using the laptop intensely. I’ll be using it to browse the web and try and create some music with my guitar. I’m a total newb and I’m just testing the waters with creating music. I have 2TB of ICloud storage that I use on my iPhone, can I share that with my laptop? And will it be enough?
Im going to Currys and a few other laptop stores to ask the workers all these questions but I’m not doing that for a few days and I’m impatient and want to know sooner lol.
8gb is just fine, 16gb is ideal
@@tt_1337 thank you for replying! I’ve only just seen this. I bought my MBA M1 around 2 weeks ago and love it! Went for the 16gb too
Doesnt the macbook air M1 only have 8GB of RAM tho? That seems problematic.
There are 2 options for RAM for the MacBook Air, the 8GB version and the 16GB version
i heard the m1 macbook air has issues when exporting 4k video sometimes stops or something . have you had any problems exporting say 2o min video ?? thank you
No nothing never but my videos are usually 8-15min
How do you get around the TINY amount of storage in the air?
You can buy 1tb or 2tb drive, lol
@@nazar_midi If you're Bill Gates lol.
@@Skrenja Bill Gates? 😂😂 a 13 inch M1 MacBook Pro 16gb, 1tb is 1,649 or 137 a month. It’s not cheap by any means but Bill Gates? That monster synth he is sitting it on might be though. 😂😂😂
I'm using a MacBook Pro M1 with bitwig and Ableton. It's way better than my 2017 Intel MacBook Pro. That old laptop is warped from getting super hot from the CPU; I can't even close the lid. Bitwig really pegs the CPU, but the M1 handles my projects and I can even bump up the oversampling in plugins that support it. It does get warm, but I have yet to hear the fan...even once.
How much ram and storage did you get in your MBP M1?
@@MaTTiiBeaTz hey, I got the 16GB/1TB config. I knew I needed 1TB from my previous MacBook, and it just didn't make sense to skimp on RAM given the price and my sense that I would be using the M1 for at least two years. The capabilities and performance with the M1 port of bitwig are simply excellent.
Are you having any trouble running your midi boards on the M1?
no
do you have the 16gb version?
yes
Planning to buy the new 24 inch iMac with 8 core cpu and 7 core gpu
Is it enough to make music? I mean I will be upgrading the ram and storage.
Can u please help
You can not upgrade the new 24 inch imac with M1 chip. What specs you buy that is what you will have forever, because the RAM and SSD is on the M1 chip and is not upgradable
@@hrisostomzanet9793 I meant I will be upgrading the ram and storage while buying itself. Just wanted to if 7 core gpu is that of a big issue.
Yup, 2 monitors is what keeps me too from buying it :)
I would like to have laptop under the desk and switch 2 pieces of 32" monitors on my desk for montage and recordings
for you: eshop.macsales.com/shop/owc-thunderbolt-hub
Couldn't you send a timecode to a second system for visuals? Could you maybe explain why this doesnt work? Or andy the gear guy:P
we are sending the midi and osc to another computer that controls the light based on the input I trigger in ableton
Can you please make a video comparing logic with abelton would really love to see. I am from india and you really inspire me love your videos
Brother, will M1 air 8GB 25GB ssd version with an external Samsung T5 500GB ssd be good for music production like Recording, making beats, music, etc?
is there any heating issues in music production and video editing?
also If I use a Usb c hub will my audio interface and midi keyboard work fine?
I would recommend getting the 512gb of ssd if you would like to keep all your files on the laptop.
But that would also work. If your mostly on the go the 512 would be nice
@@andrew23734 okay
What DAW are you running?
logic
Your studio starts to look so amazing. If you only had some great new speakers ;-)
