Happy Birthday to Ronnie James Dio who was born on this date in 1942. This would have been his 75th birthday and I bet that he’d still be rocking had he remained with us.
The song is Holy Diver off the album of the same name which came out in 1983. The great Jimmy Bain played the bass.
A lot going on in this video - I threw some horns. Got busted by my wife throwing said horns. Played a clam. And dropped an F-Bomb.
I’m playing the Black ’76 Guild B-301, fitted with a Babicz bridge and a Zero-Mod thumb-rest. It’s actually a thumb-rest for a Jazz bass but the one hole lined up perfectly with a pick-guard screw and I added the other screw myself.

great job Troy Ronnie sure is missed and so is Jimmy Bain the music and metal world misses them....anyway love this song this was THE FIRST SONG I LEARNED ON BASS PLAYING WITH A PICK my teacher brought me this song to learn because of its walking bass line and it just over time became my go to song to play and pick to (Jimmy also played with a pick)

Neil H RJD is the only vocalist I know to use such over the top lyrics and vocals and still make them sound awesome. It truly sucks to be reminded of his passing. After seeing his interviews in Sam Dunn's metal documentary "A Headbanger's Journey", I really wanted to meet him. He seemed like the nicest, most down to earth musician in the business.

You mentioned a club in Nyack. My band used to play at Cheers in Nyack. There was a band from Pearl River named Last Tribe that we became friends with. They were an amazing original band. Have u ever heard of them? They signed a deal with Energy Records but unfortunately they never took off the way I was convinced they would.
Yes, I used to play at Cheers as well. I think that was the largest room with the best stage and sound system at the time. The name, Last Tribe, doesn't ring a bell but there were a lot of up and comers back then. I actually lived in Pearl River for a few years when I was a kid...nice town.

I have played Dio covers for pretty much all of my 30yrs of playing. Technically, you hit it on the mark. The song sounds so simple, but it is the small timing bits that make it... and you did just that. My only critique would you played it dry. Try a very small coloring of a bass driver or a Overdrive and a wee bit of compression.

4 now but maybe they notice the added note in the intro Etc. in the 3, 5, 6, 1 run where in fact Jimmy does not play it as would be proper and seen here but omits the 6 fret D sharp. I noticed but did not give any of those thumbs down. :P

Hey man, Just wanted to say, love your covers. This was one of the songs that made me fall in love with the bass guitar. Such a classic... Anyway, You may not check older videos for comments... but when I play this song, I usually pluck with my fingers closer to the neck. I've never really seen you shift your right hand towards or away from the neck, but you always manage to get such similar tonal effects. How do you do it? and how do you do it so well. If you respond, thanks! If not, thanks for another great video :)
Thanks. Yeah, I have a hard time keeping up with replying to comments. Every bass has its "sweet spot" and that spot might be different for different players. I tend to stay in that region when I play. What I look for is a balance between string tension and tone and find that moving my plucking fingers just a bit, forward or back, can make a big difference in terms of feel and sound.

I own two......I mean too, as in "too many". If I had to pick just one it would be, either my MusicMan 5 string (because, even though I don't play it very ofter, I believe that everyone should have a 5 string), or one of these Guilds that I am playing in this video...probably the Mahogany one which was the least expensive out of the couple that I have.
