    "We are coming........ HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Sadly, bassist Jimmy Bain has passed away. Jimmy played bass with Dio, among others, and cowrote this song. RIP Jimmy.
I wasn't going to post anything this week but some videos just seem to post themselves. I was never much of a "metal" guy but who doesn't like Dio? I think he had the quintessential metal voice and wrote some classic metal riffs. I always liked the sound Jimmy got on Dio's stuff - nice and clacky. I think he used a Yamaha P/J bass. And I loved the imagery in the music video for this song. Dio's demon always reminded me a bit of the figure in Disney's Fantasia.
The song is "Last In Line" which was on the album of the same name which came out in 1984.

I was fortunate enough to know Jimmy Bain for a short while - one of the nicest guys you could ever want to meet. People remember Rainbow and Dio, but forget that he wrote songs for both Phil Lynott (from Thin Lizzy) solo albums as they were best friends back in those days. Jimmy was a great writer. While recording Rainbow in the Dark, Ronnie kept saying the song was missing something. Jimmy leaned over on the keyboard and played what became one of the most recognizable keyboard riffs of the 80's and Ronnie said "That's it!"
    RIP Jimmy!

@@TJH3113 It's a shame he couldn't get that monkey off his back, he would have been with us longer. When i was first getting to know them (through WWIII) I was talking to Mandy one night and he asked me if i wanted to come down and watch him audition bass players for a show they had coming uo in San Diego and I said
"What happened to jimmy?" He told me that it was just a backup as San Diego was a dangerous distance. I asked him what he meant and he said right here in LA, if he doesn't show - I just send a driver over to North Hollywood to grab him. If we're on tour, we're together on the bus, he can't go anywhere. But, from here to San Diego is dangerous because if he doesn't show, I have to have a backup!
Thought it was funny at the time, but wish he had slowed down. He certainly was having fun but you had to remind him that he was,'t 30 anymore, and neother wqs he Lemmy, lol.. But, yes, no problem sharing - thanks for the channel - Love watching you play and you take care, also.

Nice T-40! Great job on the song. I learned on a friends tobacco burst T-40 way back in 1984. This song is one that I learned that year.
I acquired a Washburn bass with a Kahler trem on it a few years later and this song is the only place I ever found to use it! "The only way to go is down....."

    • @TJH3113
      @TJH3113  8 ปีที่แล้ว

I think I like the sound of the White T40 with the blade p/u's a little better, but this has its own sound as well.
Haha, I wouldn't know what to do with a whammy bar...I'd probably get my finger stuck underneath it or something painful like that.
      Thanks.

Well done. I am a guitar player by trade. This is one of my favorite songs of bass lines. The bass runs in the song are just so recognizable and melodic. I knew the main bass lines in the song, but not all the runs and nuances. In fact this is the reason I came upon this cover. I wanted to see how it is played on bass the whole way through. I would say you nailed it!

""We'll know for the first time if were Evil or Devine!"
Such a incredible song by all measures.
Ronnie James Dio was one in a million. The incredible voice. Phasing and emotion was part of the power and beautiful singing that was unique to him alone. The stories that his song's told were second to none. This is a perfect example of what he could conjure with the right people helping. Jimmy Bain was a born an bred Bassist.. He came out the first line up of what would be Thin Lizzy. Ronnie An Jimmy created some of the best music made. I was lucky enough to see Dio almost every tour. Jimmy was always smiling while hammering down some of the best Basslines with a tone that was all his.
Great post Troy! You capture the power and tone of the song in spades!

Love this base line, but looking back on the '80's, Vivian Campbell was the backbone of multiple Metal Hits. After leaving Dio, Vivian's work with Whitesnake catapult them into stardom... One must wonder how much of Whitesnake's success can be accredited to Vivian having played with Dio….

You are fantastic. I do have some suggestions: I think Tiran Porter is one of the most underrated bass players of all time. He created great bass parts on nearly every single Doobie Brothers song. My favorites are "Clear As the Driven Snow" and "Neal's Fandango". To bring the bass parts, that are hidden so much of the time, to the forefront with these two songs will make people appreciate him, I think.

I wanted to a 'detective' style campaign. An illusionist is going around wooing women to fall in love with him and then for some reason curses them transforming them into something "bossy" (hag/witch-undead you get the picture):
I was having a problem getting started then i remembered your covers of this and HOly Diver.

I looked real long and close at the Peavy basses when I was in the market for a second bass. I ended up getting a Yamaha 5 string which I sold years later to get a little money. My Fender P bass with Rosewood frettboard got stolen out my condo during a burglary. I have the serial numbers and if I ever see it I'm going to call the cops and get it back. It has some unique features that I can recognize from afar. Anyway I have one bass now, a late sixties Univox made in Japan, it is small scale not the 34:" But it has a cute personality and the Sunburst that I always wanted. The Peavy in the background of your vid looks more like the ones I was looking at. What do you think of the new made in America G& L's?
