- Pokemon Gen 3 Competitive Singles is my favourite format. A lot of you have been taking interest in the format recently, so I thought I'd do a livestream taking a look at some replays from new players. The Viewer "LuichoX" submitted this replay featuring a very solid Aerodactyl + Tyranitar Spikes Offense. This style of team is a great choice if you're a beginner and want to learn the fundamentals. The gameplan of the team was very well showcased in this replay, so I thought I'd share it.
I'm having a "Live Wo-Chien Reaction" to all of this great information.

Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Pokemon better than their evolutions are few and far between. Chansey is one of them in some scenarios. Pokemon toys School could learn a lot from certain Pokemon designs, for example, Gholdengo and its iconic visual appeal. Maybe one day, I'll get to explain How I won the biggest Pokemon tournament, if I ever do that. For now, I haven't won the biggest tournament.

Hi, how can I send you some replays? I am a new player and I would like you to analize my gen3ou current strategy. Besides, I found an interesting niche for Muk in OU (anything revolutionary tho, it's even suggested in Smogon but I havent run into anybody who uses it yet).

Aerodactyl has swag. I used him on my team to place 14th in the VGC Oceania International Challenge in 2017. Sky drop shenanigans while Porygon-Z set up with Z move conversion, was very epic.

I am glad you gave a recommendation for beginners, I think many in the jimothy cool nation want to get in to 3OU and have no idea how to begin
Not only that but Aero is by far the most suitable Choice Band user. With no setup moves and base 130 speed its a no brainer to run CB on Aero and hit everything for massive damage. Rock Head also makes Double Edge a very spammable and safe click since no frail ghost type wants to switch into Aerodactyl and even resists still take so much from it. Such a cool pokemon. Offense used to be really interesting until gen 4 came out and made offense broken. In gen 3 offense was strong but also risky, you had to play well and predict correctly you couldn't just spam Outrage and win

@@HisCoconutGun Honestly I get your point but do you really think gen 4 OU would have been even remotely close to how good gen 3 OU was without the bans? Gen 4 metagame was doomed to be a disaster from the start. Stealth Rock, Choice Scarf, insane setup movepools (why did Garchomp need Swords Dance again? I thought there was a reason Dnite Ttar and Mence did not get that shit), a million legendaries, a million priority moves, U-turn the list goes on. Choice Specs and Life Orb were fine, maybe even necessary to increase offensive variety given how up until gen 3 most offensive pokemon still run leftovers on most of their sets but shit like Choice Scarf and Stealth Rock should have never existed in the game. And lets not even talk about how poorly handled the physical special split was, they did not even think before implementing it and reworking moves or even stats and overnight balanced and fun pokemon like Salamence became the most broken and unfun shits ever. Some pokemon really needed it and others did not manage to benefit at all but the bottom line is the split was just thrown on the wall, some pokemon stick some did not and some caused utter chaos all by pure chance instead of thought
@@dntremad8290This post screams "zoomer plays Gen 3 OU a few times after watching YT videos, and now all of a sudden thinks they have the keys to game balance", cuz no one who actually plays ADV talks like this lmao. Gen 4 OU is an excellent metagame in spite of the power creep it introduced, and there's far more that goes into teambuilding and strategy than "spamming outrage" or Choice boosted attacks (Jirachi is far more centralizing than any of the Dragons are). The physical/special split helped the game far more than it had hurt and gave many mons a new lease on life. Trying to point to overpowered outliers like Mence and Garchomp as some legitimate argument that Game Freak adding this long overdue mechanic was some sort of mistake is laughable.
If you wanna see a meta that's actually still plagued by power creep that it's a mess of bans and clauses even into this day, Gen 5 would be the far better example.

Just wanted to say after a while of watching your videos i finally decided to listen to you and try out gen 3 ou. Gotta say, its the most fun ive had in competitive pokemon so far 😂 this format is awesome.

Ehhh... it might be a little crazy if it had those, considering it'd be the fastest Rock-Head Smash user in the game and with comparable strength to all the others.
But given power creep, maybe it wouldn't be that bad.

@@handoverthestromboli6715 Aerodactyl will most likely be in a tier higher than Tyrantrum and Relicanth, so it won't be their to outclass them as a Head Smashing machine
Imagine if Aero had Head Smash and Brave Bird, it would be an excellent choice band user.

Aerodactyl is my favourite Pokemon of all time. Its mega is absolutely bonkers strong and fast especially with Tough Claws, and in Gen 8 Aero got access to Dragon Dance. Assuming Aero gets even 1 turn to setup, which under Sand is more than possible via boosting his SPDF on targets like specs Boomburst/Hurricane Noivern, and is given a Life Orb, he can utterly ruin anything that isn't the most bulky Pokémon in the game - very few things can switch into him. You might say to yourself, why run Dragon Dance on an already fast Pokémon? Well, choice scarfers! Aero is so fast that even running an Adamant nature, at +1 he outruns basically everything and threatens massive damage back at the least. If you're finding trouble keeping Aero alive to setup, a Sitrus Berry can help him find the boosts he needs to clean up! He suffers from a weakness to all common priority (Aqua Jet, Bullet Punch, Ice Shard) to balance him out nicely i feel, though.
Also, gen 3 Aero is the best abuser of Choice Band in the game. Rock slide flinches + Earthquake ensures he can hit a vast amount of Pokemon for strong STAB or at least super effective damage.
Its sad that Aero fell to the lower tiers in recent years, but if & when he comes back, i hope they give him a few new tools to take advantage of his Rock Head ability, such as Brave Bird, Wild Charge or Flare Blitz. Because he can use the elemental fangs already, it doesnt even seem absurd that he cannot have access to these moves. I really hope he returns for Gen 9, although its not looking likely since none of the fossils made it for some reason. If they don't give Aero recoil moves to synch with his Rock Head, i think they should give him something like Strong Jaw, or lets face it intimidate, because look at it!!! Hows that not a ferocious looking Mon?!

I think this thing had the potential to be really good in later generations if they gave it Brave Bird and Head Smash. That pared up with Rock Head would have been brutal to deal with. I dont give two shits that he isnt a bird, it should've learned Brave Bird.
Apparently they didn't want to do that because Banded Double Edges coming from him were deadly as it is. However given power creep I see no reason why he can't get Brave Bird, Flare Blitz & Wild Charge to his kit. It's not like he's unbeatable with them

Speed kills. Its stats, moves and abilities are so good. My favourite gen 3 bird. Its what it should have been in Gen 1. The definition of balance.
Basically, Aerodactyl is a great late game sweeper that can power through almost anything.
Do you enjoy the lack of team preview? I ask this because it's an arbitrary decision on Smogon's part since it's available through XD.
Plus the switching mechanics on Showdown are based on XD rather than GBA which uses port priority.

When Smogon talks about Team Preview, they call Gen 3 "a gen without Team Preview" like the other old gens. But that's wrong, is my point. Gen 3 does have Team Preview. All gens have Team Preview. Even Generation 1 ran Team Preview for the first ever official tournament, Nintendo Cup 1997, before Stadium was even released (you'd show each other your team before battling). So it's arbitrary in the sense that they just decided to exclude it (for whatever reason) but there's nothing inherent in the games that is telling you to play without it.@@HisCoconutGun

I grew up with generation 2, started competitively gen 3, excelled in gen 4 and later on played generation 1. Everything during and past generation 5 I never really enjoyed. Watching these videos make me realize how much I used to love older generations. Newer generation pokemon are all so busted even when they're not banned. Everyone can be reverse swept by king gambit, walking wake in sun and rain hits like a truck and winning often comes down to guessing whether he will go for water or dragon moves. Iron Valiant is so incredible fast and OP as a late game sweeper and the fact you never truly know its set is so damn OP. Even in prior generations you be easily overwhelmed by magearna, normalium z kartana and other cheese. And sure sometimes it could be fun to blast through an opponent when they can't do much about it but it just kinda gets stale over time.
i can agree on this, but as someone who played gen 1 for a good while too... i wouldn't exactly call it balanced either, not ridiculous like modern gens, but not exactly the most balanced environment, specially with a different issue in the lack of diversity, Tauros + Lax + chansey + Zam/Star is quite literally near mandatory otherwise the team just falls apart and that's 4 out of 6 mons, I feel some busted meta like ORAS could be arguably less ridiculous than RBY where the entire meta is at OHKO or 2HKO range for Tauros and you can't do much abt it once your team's got too much damage or para'd, let alone how dangerously safe it can be to cheese in this meta. This meta got awfully saturated in my head and i don't think i can change this at all sadly.
(RBY lower tiers sound fun but the ladders for those are only occasional, so...)

Gen 6 and 7 are my favorite competitive gens. I loved using mega aerodactyl in UU. With sand up it was a beast

Yes, Jirachi is weird, right? At first I taught it was a Protox Jirachi because tox helps againts swampert. Fire punch+protect againts Metagross.
Maybe a CM, Fire+Psychic+Grass Jirachi?
I would use defensive Celebi in that spot.

I put it on all my Gen III showdown teams alongside Celebi, T-tar, and Moltres. They form a almost unstoppable offensive core together.

I'm going to guess that the adjective's before the word "end screen" depend on which tiers last got new members. When it changed to "good and funny" a person was added to both tier 2 and 3.

Just for fun I decided to try using Ash Ketchums battle Frontier team in Gen 3 OU. I've actually managed to do pretty well with the team despite using Pokemon like Light ball Pikachu and Corpfish, but the team is incapable of even denting Aerodactyl! Tyranitar, Skarmory, Blissey, Salamence, Metagross, Swampert, Jirachi, etc. are all manageable, but Aerodactyl has put the fear of God into me

Here’s how I’d buff Aerodactyl:
-Give it Head Smash, Brave Bird, Wild Charge, and Flare Blitz to take advantage of Rock Head, and give it more STAB and coverage options.
-Give it Trailblaze, for damage, Grass coverage, and Speed boosting.
-Give it Headlong Rush as more powerful Ground coverage.
-Give it Wide Guard to protect against priority.
just giving it head smash is enough of a buff you dont need to give it literally every strong recoil move in the game
@@BlueRenown It allows for variety tho. One Fakemon I’m designing is Baavalanche, an Rock/Ice-type bighorn sheep built around fast physical offense, and it gets Rock Head as a possible ability. Instead of just giving it Double-Edge and Head Smash and calling it a day, I give it Wild Charge and the brand new move Glacier Crash, which is an Ice-type Flare Blitz. Baavalanche has 131 Attack and 111 Speed.
This is the first time I see Torrent (subsequently Blaze/Overgrow/Swarm) being useful
It is usually a throw away ability if the mon has anything else. But since swampert is such a solid mon in gen 3 even without a good ability it gets its use in situationally.
charizard makes good use of blaze too in gen 3. Heracross has sets that try to deliberately knock it into swarm range to turn it into a megahorn machine. Only overgrow kinda blows

In let’s go, it completely invalidates jolt. No matter what, won’t die to one hit while body bagging it if it wins speed tie… and that’s if they don’t just mega and delete them.

Baton pass undeterred by roar, roar is a sound based move
Mr. Mime is the only Baton Pass user that is immuned to Roar thanks to Soundproof, so you can only Phaze it out with Whirlwind. Unfortunately, Whirlwind has a pretty bad distribution in gen 3. Besides Skarmory, only Aerodactyl learns it in OU, alongside Hariyama and Crobat which are UUBL.
However, a lot more OU Pokemon learn Roar, so players would rather ban Soundproof than Baton Pass, since Baton Pass is fun to use with some restrictions from the Smogon ruleset.

Gen 3 Aerodactyl, more specifically with CB, was the first Pokemon of a new archtype. Not a wallbreaker, not a revenge killer, but in the middle. Well, it's a good revenge killer too, but the role I'm describing doesn't require so much prior damage.
CB essentially boosts Aero's offensive stats to 157/130, as compared to 105/130. That's a huge difference, with an obvious drawback. Most pokemon capable of being this strong off the bat have a drawback. Cb even fixes the problem of its low power STAB moves.
And for some reason, there is no Choice Specs or Choice Scarf. It can run free with little fear of being outsped.

Mr Mime could create unbreakable Baton Pass chains as its immune to Roar. Whirlwind is a form of counterplay but only 2 relevant Pokemon get it making the counterplay very limited. The ADV Community wanted to keep Baton Pass in the game so Soundproof was banned
@jimothycool So that's still unbeatable even with the single stat-baton pass? I'm just not seeing how that works but I bet it's something funny. Even then, why would they ban the ability instead of just Mr. Mime?
@@dispergosum Yep they would speed pass to Mr Mime then Hypnosis or set up Screens, then go to a CMer or something like Marowak and just sweep
