Honestly, I've spent so much more money than I ever would have in this hobby *because* of wahapedia. I don't think GW understands how much the ability to look over army rules and datasheets for stuff you don't have can drive future purchases and the impulse to start a new army.

    • @Ben-fk9ey
      @Ben-fk9ey ปีที่แล้ว +26

New players are likely to buy the app or buy new models they might not actually need. Either way makes GW money, and if you're an experienced player using a 3rd party system you're still buying their models so they really don't care.

I can personally attest to this as when I originally started the hooby I was only really interested in diffrent flavors of marines but got curious and got to look at both the rules and models of Xenos factions along with other Imperium and Chaos armies thanks to Wahapedia. I want multiple armies now.

So hard to stomach the army builder is going behind a pay wall. It's been so cool being able to look at stats at the gamestore to help inform my purchase. In a hobby where I've got 140 dollars of models soaking in simple green to manually scrub army painter primer off after I screwed up, a subscription pay wall for the freakin rules is insane.

If you go back and listen to the words in the 10th Edition preview show carefully we knew this outcome was going to happen from Day 1.
They tip-toed around exact wordings every time free rules were mentioned with a ton of riders. You don't say it in roundabout ways when your being honest, you do it when you know you're (technically not) lying to your audience in an advertisement.
From memory: "At the edition launch Indexes will be free." "You will be able to freely access your armies rules and build armies at the start of the edition." "These free rules will later be updated and replaced by your codex in a system that replaces rules rather than adding complexity" etc. All things that didn't need extra words unless they knew they had to be added for legal reasons.

Late because I just found this channel, but to explain what happened with Canada for those who don't know.
We have a province in Canada, Quebec, that is majority French and arroga- I mean proud of it.
Recently they passed a language law mandating French for everything in province, including streaming services. The next thing about it is Canadian French is NOT France French. So GW would have to dub/translate everything in the service again specifically for one province in one country. It would be the American equivalent of Louisiana declaring Louisianan Creole as an official language and demanding GW adapt everything for that language.
On top of that, there's some weird clauses in the law, that (the way it's written) allows for Quebec authorities to demand, at any time, user databases among other confidential business information, and can impose financial penalties if they aren't given the information within a short time frame.
Time will tell if GW bothers to separate it by region and just block Quebec, but I doubt they'll spend the resources.
    RIP

Sorry you found it so frustrating to use. It IS beta software after all. The UI is made to be able to develop against and we'll be refactoring it once we're able to.
Accounts are required at this point partly because we store data on a server-offline mode is coming-and partly because it's a beta test so we need to be able to analyze how people are using it.
Editing wargear is a bit of a pain, not due to issues with the app but due to some oddness with how certain weapons have to work and rather than special-case the weird ones, we standardized the behavior for the test data. If the community decides that a different approach would be preferable, they have the ability to make those changes, as our data is democratized.

The settings to fix New Recruit's weird export colors are in the "Background" section. You would think it's the "White Background" checkbox in the "Text Export" section. You would be wrong. You're going to want to pick something in a nice medium grey or thereabout (I did 175/175/175) for the background color and then turn transparency on the image all the way down. This will let you use the theme in a quasi dark mode, but will "export pretty" with nice black text on muted grey background.

I am today years old when I learned you can duplicate models in battlescribe. To dup a unit you right click and have the option to duplicate, but to dup a model you have to select a model and then use the little copy symbol button on the second bar from the top in the middle... next to the formatting buttons. As a person who was very tired of painstakingly equipping each model in Deathwatch armies with the same loadout, I think the ability to mass copy models in Rosterizer with one input was my favorite part of Rosterizer.
I will say though, Rosterizer is still my favorite at the moment as their yellowscribe output doesn't break like BS (yes this includes the most recent BS update, it still breaks much of the yellowscribe script, and it'll ask you to select models for the guns of some units). They also have a very active data authors, I remember posting on BS's github (following their rules) and pointing out a flaw, then getting told it'll get fixed in the next BS update which was with the next codex release at the time so a few weeks later (which would apply to New Recruit as well). I posted a problem with a Rosterizer manifest and it was fixed in only a few hours.

I don't know what it is but every single time Brad says "19-dickity-two", I laugh.
Watching the editor navigate Rosterizer is a delight. With all the others, I can tell they're showing things off, they're clicking buttons and making examples out of stuff, they know what to do and where to go. With Rosterizer, I can almost tell just by the way the mouse moves and how they keep selecting the same stuff over and over (at least it looks like that) that they are legitimately just trying to understand what they're doing. It's a bad look, but it's very charming for the editor and I appreciate their efforts.
It is so, so funny that Eric found the Dragon theme on New Recruit and immediately got super aggressive about how he _insisted_ on using the Dragon theme. When I was listening to the audio version I did check New Recruit on my mobile browser just to see, and the Dragon theme does look cool, but also on mobile the image is much smaller and it just repeats so it has a strong Angelfire "welcome to my website, please sign my guestbook, here's a cool picture I found on Google that I tiled for the background" energy, which I _kind of_ love.
It looks like Export Pretty does not use the font color of your chosen theme, it is always default black. I just checked on the dark theme and it does the same thing, then I switched it back to classic and it looks fine. They need to give you an option to change the font color on Export Pretty or at least switch it to white when you have a dark theme selected, like Dark or Dragon. You can see on the theme "Ghost" it uses grey rather than black, so the text is _visible_ but difficult to make out. That's an annoying problem because I like Export Pretty but I also really want to use the Dark theme. It seems like this should be an easy fix, but I don't know shit about that. The options they give you for customization are _great._
But overall I really like New Recruit and I'm so glad you guys did a video on this topic to introduce me to it! That said, never forget about basic stuff like Google Sheets, Excel, or just a pad and paper. They're minimalist and require you to do all the work yourself, but they also allow full customization of how you want to lay out your notes.

Eric and I had the same experience, but Berilio managed to crash it on his phone in a few hours of recording footage on it. I'm going to guess it's an issue that will be phone dependent. (He also managed to blue screen his computer while installing BlueStacks for his first attempt at recording footage, so he had a GREAT time this episode.)

@@thepoorhammerpodcast for sure seems like a phone to phone thing, for a new player the official 40k app is definitely the supreme for newer players who need specific wording. Furthermore, I play Sister's of Battle and Battlescribe does not work properly when selecting war gear for my Battle Sisters and is dead to me.

All these list building apps just make me think how useful it was for me to learn how to make lists with pen and paper. You get really good at reading the codex, and thus understanding your rules better, when you have to re-read pages several times. You also just become damn near encyclopedic with your knowledge because, again, you've read the damn book repeatedly.

I myself have never played a 40K game, more into the lore myself, but as a suggestion for maybe a followup episode it would be fun and interesting of you guys doing a guide with the New Recruit Builder of how you should compose a 40K army. I think it could help potential new players and advertise that Builder for existing players!

From what I can tell about New Recruit, lists are cookie based when you're not a registered user and probably server based when you're signed in as it downloads lists when you sign in from a new device or browser. Chances are lists aren't too data intensive (maybe a few kilobytes per list at most) but at the same time I can't see what's actually going on in the backend.
Glad you brought it up though, because as a Canadian this is probably going to be my go to option now that GW won't even take my money to use their app and I really don't like Battlescribe.

Unfortunately, if every gaming company could charge you monthly for their game, they would do it in a heartbeat. GW wants you to pay monthly for access to your codexes and army builder, Wizards wants you to pay monthly for your DnD and Magic stuff, modern gaming is all about getting a free to play game out there and then hitting the battle pass button; the idea of players having to pay you every month for your game rather than buying in with one lump sum is so appealing because it's potentially infinite money, especially if those players mean to cancel their subs but just keep forgetting to do so.

So last thoughts, as of now, the rules half of the 40k app is still free, the biggest litmus test for me is going to be the release of the new Space Marine Codex. My understanding was that the Codexs were going to shift more towards fluff and "DLC" type stuff. They already previewed some pretty in-depth looking rules, so hopefully rules will be updated for free and just the builder is behind the paywal like it is now. I won't hold my breath but that'd be a better outcome

New 40k player here and new Kill team player. I was absolutely baffled by the lack of rules and list building available. I bought the phobos kill team box and the core book hoping rules would be in there, I also searched their website and there are 0 instructions on how to build a kill team list. I eventually had to ask on reddit and found out wahapedia was the best place to go as no official info available other than in the starter box or buying yet another £30 book (the book from starter boxes).
Absolutely horrendous entry to the hobby when I dropped £100 just for two kill teams and the rule book already. They really need a free list building guide/tool available with all the data sheets in one place, as I am not paying monthly to use their app to do it
