RIP to an absolute legend. He was a family friend and I had the privilege of being gifted a signed jersey from him. It will hang on my wall ‘til the day I die, I’ll miss him dearly 😢
He was a great guy, a great family man and a huge credit to the game. In that era, when too many of the ultra-tough players were no talent bums, guys like Clark Gillies and Larry Robinson were the adults on the ice. They had the skill to play with anyone, the strength to fight anyone, and the wisdom to know when to do either one. Boy he was the prototype of the tough Saskatchewan players of that era who could do it all. Skate, score, make plays, check and fight when necessary. The fact he was a great teammate, father and citizen makes his loss that much harder. Every hockey player should strive to be like Clark Gillies, on and off the ice. He was the personification of a tough, honest, western Canadian hockey player of his era.
Ranger fan since 1970 and there the night he broke Hospodar's jaw. MSG went silent as we saw the blood on the ice and Hospodar going off for repairs. One of those guys you hated but wish he was on your team. Bobby Clarke comes to mind. He was on the Tom Laidlaw podcast a year ago and was a great guest! RIP Jethro!
Years later, people watching this clip should know it began minutes after a home win (Arizona), coming out of the first ad break with scant preparation, so Shannon, Brendan and Butch are talking from the heart with as much professionalism as they can muster. It was shocking, stunning, and I think they did a great job. It’s an almost unbearably hard six minutes to sit through here at home, so I can only imagine what it was like at the studio. RIP Jethro. An area icon, a league legend, a gentle giant smiling and laughing off the ice who could be a powder keg detonating on it, he earned every accolade that came his way, and the number of sorrowful voices speaking about him this difficult first weekend are a testament to the love and good cheer he spread throughout his extended Islanders community. We’re all blessed to have had you here, Clarkie. Thanks for all the memories - these will outlive us all.
oh my god I remember as a kid on long island the first time i seen Clark Gillies he just got to the islanders and came out to play tennis with bob Nystrom and lorne Henning on brush hollow rd he was in street cloths jacked 6 ft 3 , , ,, when i saw him i was about 14 years old and said wow i want to look like him one day ,,,,,what a great guy,,
I met Clark Gillies April 24th 1994 when I was around 18 Years Old at Nassau Coliseum during Comic Sports Show I was working as Dealer. Islanders were on Verge of getting swept by Rangers playing game at same time after going on amazing run to qualify when seemed impossible. I was too nervous at first to talk while Clark is talking saying can You Please just Sign These (Pucks). Then I went back to have him add number/name explained I was shy etc. I got to hang out talk to him on/off there over an hour. I remember saying how Islanders came back down 3-0 before Winning Series (Penguins). Clark Right Away "I Know I Was On That Team" what an awesome moment haha. Kings would go on to win Stanley Cup in 2014 (down 3 games to Sharks).
met him the night before at rush concert great guy i was 19 went rush concert got home at 4 and got up at 9 go tailgate at coliseum for that game it was a sunday afternoon game at 19 it was easy pull that off not now lol
@@bb-gc2tx Hehe its funny both were around same age meeting same person. I used to do shows with Allen I think was his name who was a big Rush fan. I remember him telling me about their concerts but he complained people were toking at them too :). I had a few concerts at like Roxy or Wet Lands going white water rafting the next morning or stuck in traffic hours on the way there. These days just cooking is exhausting ;). I'm lucky I got to hang out with him during show. He signed 3 Hockey Pucks personalized them even put his number and their names. My cousin had intended to give them to his Nephews. So its funny I was friendly enough to where he didn't mind signing them or just talking. He seemed to be enjoying it. I was too afraid at same show to talk to Foley aka Mandking Cactus Jack. I saw Missy Hyatt along with this guy Sunny Beach. I'm pretty sure its same show as I drove pickup truck into basement of Coliseum. That was awesome to be in the areas normal people can't go. He is coolest person ever met. I wish I could remember more of the experience. Vukota I got two cards signed at another show maybe Coliseum too. I just asked him if he was going to play more then said he should is pretty good when he replied back. Just funny how I mentioned he was the only guy playing an he is a goon to Clark in our conversations. I didn't realize Gillies was a tough dude himself so I think he got a chuckle out of that.
@@joshuafisher6966 Thanks I wish more saw my video RSS 008 about it so knew what a great experience it was before he died that I made around a year ago. I got the paper to read about him so I wish they beat Toronto that ti was televised live. I didn't pay him anything as I was Dealer maybe or he didn't mind hehe. These days to get somebody to sign anything they want 20 bucks or so. He seemed to enjoy our time so that was cool. I wish I knew more about hm before we met though heh. I just wish he was still alive to give people moments like I had with him.
I first met Clark back in 2015 at the islanders draft party. Even though I was just a 14 year old kid Clark sat down and talked hockey with my friends and me for a while and even signed my #9 banner for me. He was such an amazing person and never failed to make a fan’s day. I’ll never forget those few moments I had with him. RIP to a legend 😢
Bill and Al must be up to something once again. Building the second ultimate wagon. Great pic. Clark was awesome both on and off the ice. He was the ultimate warrior on a team of immortals. JJJJEEEEETTTTHHHRRROOOO!!!
I was 9 in 1979 when the Islander dynasty was beginning. In the middle of it all was Clark Gillies. The greatest power-forward to my mind in the history of the game. I never met him and never cheered for him as a Rangers fan whom the Islanders routinely steam-rolled through on their way to yet another Cup. But even, through my early teens I knew how special, dominant and ferocious he could be. But yet, when I'd hear him in an interview, he seemed so rational and decent. How could I hate him? My respect for him in perhaps the toughest era in the history of the game never wavered. I've met several Rangers from that era at various functions and the inventible rivalry w/ the Islanders would always come up. And those Rangers feared him because there was no one more respected on that team than he. And that included Bossy, Trottier, Potvin, Smith and the rest of that cast. They were to my mind the greatest dynasty of them all and that will always be debated. What isn't is the amount of playoff series won in a row which I believe in near 30 through those four years. On behalf of all Rangers fans - especially from that era - much love, solace, gratitude and the ultimate respect to his family, teammates, circle of loved ones and the Islanders fans and community. Very, very sad.
It hurt to watch my Canucks🏳🖤💛❤🏳 get swept in the '82 Final by the great Islanders dynasty. Clark Gillies got the 1-0 and GWG goal in Game 3 in Vancouver, almost 40 years ago. 67 is way too young to leave this world. RIP Mr. Gillies, Sir and my heartfelt condolences to the entire NY Islanders fan base & organization. 💙⚪🧡9️⃣😪💔
Absolutely gutted when I heard the news of Jethro's passing.. i was 18 when the Isles took home that first cup.. me and my Dad loved the Isles, and Gillies was my fathers favorite.. very few players have ever brought his combo of skill, leadership, and toughness.. he fought seldom, but when he did, others teams got the message.. then throw in his tireless charity work on the Island, and there is only 1 word.. LEGEND.. RIP JETHRO, go easy, Captain my Captain 🙏
Condolences unto the Gillies Family, Clark Gillies was a DEFINITE POWER FORWARD for the New York Islanders during the Stanley Cup Champion- ship era. A Sad Day in the Hockey World (Especially on Long Island, New York). Clark Gillies shall be missed greatly🛐🙏🔯.
Life Long Rangers Fan SHOCKED to hear the news 🙏 He looked so Healthy Played the game the right way, never went after anyone smaller or Weaker than him, chipped in some big goals RIP JETHRO ❤️
This is such a sad story as he was too young. He clearly was a better person off ice than he was a player, on ice, and he is in the Hockey Hall of Fame. That’s all you need to know. May he Rest In Peace and deepest condolences to his family, friends and all that knew him.
I didn't watch much of Gillies, as hockey wasn't on TV much when I was young, but the thing I remember most is that if you played against him, you didn't want to wake him up by hitting him big or taking cheap shots. If he woke up, he'd score 3 or 4 points against you.
RIP to an absolute legend. He was a family friend and I had the privilege of being gifted a signed jersey from him. It will hang on my wall ‘til the day I die, I’ll miss him dearly 😢
Your lucky my friend.
He was a legend from my childhood.. A great man, a protector, a teammate, the gentle giant.. Will miss u cg. Rip
What a legend. He played the game the right way. A true power forward. Tuff as nails. A Gordy Howe of his day. R.I.P. and condolences to his family.
Condolences from a Rangers fan.
It was so hard to hear Butchie talk about this on the air. Clark was his friend and teammate. I could never imagine how he felt.
Did you hear her choking up at the end.. really cares about these people in the organization God bless her
RIP hockey legend. Enjoyed watching you play . From a flyers fan !!!!

Bobby Clark was a fink.. no where near Jethro.. He kept away from Nicky Fotiu though... nonetheless, R.I.P. a classy hockey player indeed...
