    I was at the Cleveland Clinic on 11/10/23, waiting while my wife's cancer was being diagnosed in an examination room. Im 74. When the Andy Griffith show started, it aired about 30 minutes ( i think) after my bedtime. The next day, daddy would tell us all about the show. Of course, our feelings were hurt because we would have loved to watch. Instead, we had to watch daddy's programs instead. It wasn't until I was a senior in high-school that I got to watch. Sense then, I've been able to watch every episode probably have a dozen times. The show with the cannon was one of the shows I wanted to see, and it was several years before I got to see it. But I've been a fan ever since. Now I stream it into my TV set, and when traveling, I watch it on my phone. I heard the other day that a new version is supposed to air, but I don't know when or which channel. Hopefully someone here can fill in those blanks for me.

    Barney completed the sheriff, Don Knotts was hilarious, I loved his character.

  • @Noomz-of-Earl
    @Noomz-of-Earl ปีที่แล้ว +77

    Don Knotts' Barney Fife character elevated the show to classic status. When he left, no natural comedy element remained. Kudos to Andy Griffith for realizing early on that the hick sheriff bit wasn't going to fly, especially since he was playing the essentially serious role of a widower raising a five-year-old.

    • @teastrainer3604
      @teastrainer3604 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I respectfully disagree. Andy's becoming a serious character in the fourth season badly damaged the show. When Goober or one of the other characters does something goofy and Andy gets a peevish expression on his face, I wince. If Andy has no empathy for Mayberry's characters, then why should the viewer?

    • @Noomz-of-Earl
      @Noomz-of-Earl 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@teastrainer3604 - By early on, I'm going as far back to the spin-off pilot from the Danny Thomas Show which had Andy as a stereotypical, almost buffoonish hayseed character. Some of that continued into the first proper episode, with Barney introduced as his cousin. Griffith sensed something was off and quickly retooled the show making Barney the featured wacky, laugh-getting, nervous deputy character and Sheriff Andy Taylor a more normal, reasonable and responsible type; in essence, the straight man of the duo. The show then became very consistent throughout Don Knotts' tenure. I suspect that what you observed along the way with Griffith's performance might have been due to his over-involvement with the production and writing of the show. He took no credit except as an actor but he worked on the making of every episode and was essentially in charge creatively. The peevishness you perceived (which I doubt too many other viewers did) may have been due to things (which could have included other characters or actors' performances) not being up to his desired standards.

    • @teastrainer3604
      @teastrainer3604 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@Noomz-of-Earl I'm fully aware of all that. I'm saying that the last five seasons of the show were nothing compared to the first three seasons, and it all had to do with Andy's turning serious and looking down on Mayberry's boneheads.. In the first three seasons he played the same character he had in No Time for Sergeants, and it worked much better. In the beginning he managed to be more sensible than the cast's eccentrics while also being funny. I imagine that as a Southerner Andy was sensitive about such matters and wanted to show that a Southerner could play a serious character.

    • @Noomz-of-Earl
      @Noomz-of-Earl 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@teastrainer3604 - Of course, after "No Time for Sergeants" he played, to much critical acclaim, one of the most serious original dramatic film roles of the late 1950s in Elia Kazan/Budd Schulberg's "A Face in the Crowd."

    • @teastrainer3604
      @teastrainer3604 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Noomz-of-Earl Lonesome Rhodes while in his scammer mode was just like Andy in No Time for Sergeants. Mayberry was a surreal place with surreal people living in it. That's what made it funny. You're welcome to think Andy improved the show by making himself and his girlfriend serious characters but I'm not going to agree with that. Andy hated Mayberry RFD but it wasn't much worse than the last few seasons of his show.

    For 39 minutes and 47 seconds tonight, I managed to shut out every bit of the chaos going on in the world right now and get completely lost in every second of this video. I grew up watching TAGS reruns in the early 70s. And, while I know it's impossible to go back in time, there are just some days that I really need that clock to be rolled back. It's difficult to really put into words. It was just a simpler time back then.

    ..One of, if not the best TV shows of all time.. Got a chance to meet Andy when I was about 11 years old..
    We were vacationing in Nags Head, NC, and waiting to go out fishing on a charter boat. The man who ran the marina pointed to a boat coming into the inlet, & said "there's Andy"..
    My father said "Andy who"?
    "Andy Griffith" he replied..
    My dad was also a huge fan, "No Time For Sergeants" was one of his favorite movies (the "saluting toilet" scene is one of the funniest ever).
    We went down on the dock as his boat backed in..
    He was very gracious, and had a great day fishing..
    My friend and I kept looking past Andy into the boat, & he noticed this, & asked "What are ya'll youngins lookin' for"?
    We replied in unison...
    "Opie" He busted out laughing.. After all he"s done, I'm glad we were able to make HIM laugh...

    I met Mr. Griffith in 1969 while I was in the Air Force, and he was staying at the hotel where I was moonlighting as a bellhop. This famous star had a suite just off the lobby and he would leave his door open so literally anyone could stick their head in and talk to him. If memory serves, he had a bottle of booze on the table, and a couple of long haired dachshunds that he would walk through the lobby and out into the parking lot. Most people were too shy to speak to him, but those that did have stories they are still telling their great grandchildren!!

    That Opie / Andy relationship was the baseline, along with the Andy Barney one.... It made it fun, wholesome, and fine. Father son relationships should take it for a pattern.... As in "make sure of all things, hold fast to what is fine" (1Thess.5 :21) that was a' fine' pattern to put before the public. Love Elinor Donahue and her role wish they could've held on to her! I loved Elinor Donahue's "Ellie" on the show's first season. They could have used her more and the show would have worked even if they weren't able to get Don Knotts. She was also amazing on her one episode of Star Trek, where her character was very unpleasant. In both cases, her acting was brilliant.

    You were wrong, Elinore! I Love that show, one of the very best ever in my opinion, but 2 things about the casting taking a wrong turn always bothered me. The first, most obvious, was Barney leaving the show when he did. The show was never nearly as good or the same without him. The second was the loss of Elinore Donahue. I was never a fan of hers or the show she was on before, Father Know’s Best, but I loved her on Andy Griffith. She seemed to be just the right fit for Andy, the yin to his yang, the differences allowing her to draw some of Andy’s inners out, which seemed to occur in subtle and not so subtle ways in each episode. I loved her personality on the show, and I loved her affect on Andy & visa versa. To make matters worse, the woman he did wind up with, Helen Crump, was a relative stick in the mud, whom I never took to. Elinore Donahue never did find her place on another show, despite her appearing in quite a few pilots & short runs. If Elinore had worked out on Andy’s show, she’d be right up there now as a memorable tv character icon.

      They didn’t have to tie Andy down. As with many relationships on comedy shows, they could easily have stretched out their pre relationship business to initial friendship, conscious to subconscious flirtations, interest in other dates, and misunderstandings for a couple or few seasons before finally hooking up.

      I loved watching Elinor Donahue on "Father Knows Best" but loved her even more on "The Andy Griffith Show". I sure wish that she had stayed for her full three year contract. Too bad that they did not have royalty residuals back then as that may well have enticed her to stay a while longer.
      I didn't like Helen Crump much either, but one that I most certainly did was that Southern Belle Johanna Moore. Oh what a wonderful actress she was! So beautiful and classy in her actions. One of my faves from that series for sure. Too bad that she did not appear in a lot more episodes and especially with that natural southern accent. She would have made a great partner for sheriff Andy. To this day, nobody knows why she disappeared from that show so quickly, but it great loss for sure. 😪😪

    Andy Griffith was an incredibly gifted actor,and a naturally witty and funny man. Andy could have very easily carried the show on his own if he had too,but Andy also had good insight and the ability to see the talent in others and let them shine. Andy did that with Don,he also discovered and was responsible for giving Jim Nabors his big break and own show,Gomer Pyle USMC. Andy also believed very much in Jerry Van Dyke and helped him along. I love Andy and Don. They were magic together. Don wanted to be a team with Andy,and said he regretted leaving The Andy Griffith Show. And the tone of the show changed forever when Don left. Jack Burns couldnt fill his shoes. I am reading the book "Andy and Don" right now.
