Whitney kept the original melody so people could sing along to. To Mariah's version impossible to sing along because of all the runs. She even changed the melody of the anthem that people love and know. I mean the original melody was written for a reason.

@@Bwrandon no it wasnt reminiscent. Marvin's was slower and more soulful, which had more feeling. Mariah was no where close to the master piece that Marvin Gaye performed at the NBA Allstar game.🙄😒

Mariah is untouchable here, her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner is so remarkable, epic and underrated, she sang the hell out of it here, nobody will ever be close to her on that, she really make the anthem really beautiful and peacefully. I’m not from the US but she really make me feel very American on here, she’s such a vocal treasure, her cracking in some parts of the song and the whistles on the climax are marvellous and unreal. Long live Mariah Carey: The Songbird Supreme and I wish the best to the USA as a country in this difficult times 🙋🏼♀️🇺🇸🎉🎶

I don't think is possible to determine which rendition out of the two is the best - primarily because their vocal approach and interpretation is too different. Comparing the two is like comparing ice and vapor; they're both water but come in different forms.
To me Whitney Houston's version is the one you listen to before you go to war to motivate you to do your best and Mariah Carey's version is the one you listen to when you comeback home victorious. They both serve a different feeling.

This was the Super Bowl after 9/11. Also after the Glitter debacle and her physical/emotional exhaustion “breakdown.” It was really an emotionally charged moment because of 9/11 and I think for her personally having such a triumphant moment.
Whitney and Mariah have done the two best renditions in my mind. Two different approaches but so beautiful nonetheless.
And her father was dying.
Out of all three performances of this... Mariah takes the cake for me. Mariah could've delivered so much more power and oomph to this performance like most Singers do when attempting this song. But, if you listen and watch her she is showing so much Control and Restraint that makes this rendition so much more refined and grand. Which is true musicianship and mastery over a craft that is unparalleled. Only Mariah. 🌻💜

1990-2005 was her vocal prime, people say "she lost her voice in 1997" are delusional, she didn't lose her voice, she developed rasp and it requires more effort to hit high notes. Her Vocal Decline was in 2006 where her voice is declining because of nodule and age.

@@cavaalli All singers who sing live at some point have to lip sync due to the environment they may be singing in. Both Mariah and Whitney can sing so what's the issue? Whitney also song it again live that same year and was even better IMO.
@@D.nada_47 Thank you for that comment. So many people love to say Whitney lip synced that performance. She was forced to for security reasons. Regardless, she recorded it with her own vocals, and the later live performance she did of it was stellar.

Whitney more powerful at a fitting of wartime was present and Mariah more relax sound at peaceful times.
My favorite rendition is "The Voice" -Ms. Whitney Houston just a beautiful voice and safisticated sound and a presence that is powerful and commands the stage. She can really sing with powerful vocals and changes in her delivery and with a live band! Every song she sang was to be remembered!! You can tell how she felt when she sang like she was telling a story through song!! That's why her version of the Star Spangled Banner was stamped in approval as the best!!

Love Mariah and she did an amazing job as usual. But Whitney hit a home run and then dropped the mic this anthem. Whitney version after was turn into a number hit on radio. They both sang total different versions so can't really compare the two. Love them both tho.

Whitney is the voice before the war and Mariah is the voice after the war. They both gave their own touch to the Anthem. Mariah had a very difficult setting, it was a few months after 9/11 so they chose her to sing the National anthem for the Superbowl as one of the most influential artists in history. She had to bring an emotion of patriotism to the people in the country, she had to help some families heal wounds of lost loved ones.

Mariah performed this in February 2002 (4-5 months after 9/11) her rendition is more of a healing of the USA 🇺🇸 and story telling. And plus her father had died, on top of that few months before she had suffered a nervous breakdown, dropped from her label, her movie and album tanked at the box office because it was 9/11. Whitney’s is very patriotic because it was 1993/1991 during some war thingy. They’re both different and both THEE best!!! I prefer Mariah because she’s a very complex singer and no one can imitate her. Very immaculate rendition! And Whitney’s is very traditional.

Her version is very solemn, delicate, beautiful and unique. Her whistle is amazing. They said the stadium was vibrating after her performance and people were touched. She is the biggest selling female artist according to Nielsen Soundscan who tracks for Billboard. Madonna sold 300 million in a space of 37 years whilst Mariah sold 260 million in a space of 30 years. She has two diamond albums and some of the biggest selling singles in music history like All I want for Christmas is you, out of that song alone in 2010 she had already made over 60 million dollars alone.
