Nice video. It brings back great memories from my 1990 holiday to my parent’s Mesa snowbird home. My Dad proudly liked to show Fish Creek Hill Road to all visiting family members, to the awesome reward at the end, the Theodore Rosevelt Dam, which was breath taking.
Thank you. I used to keep my boat at Roosevelt Lake and I would pull it over to Apache Lake. A little hairy since it’s a big cabin cruiser and takes up the whole road. One day we decided to take the drive from Roosevelt to Canyon Lake. Breath taking. Can’t wait for it to open up again
I drove this entire road in 2002. Phoenix, Apache Junction, Goldfield( which I found fascinating). I camped (tent) at / near Tortilla Flat. There I had a meal in a campsite restaurant. The following day continued Fish Creek, and on to Roosevelt and up to Payson,I loved Payson, it was quieter then. Oldtimer Englishman reliving past adventures. I Love the Southwest.
Thank you for a great video. Brings back many memories. I haven’t been down through the Apache Trail since 1982-83. We have tried to come through a couple of times but road closed for some time. Thank you again. Hope it opens soon. It’s on my bucket list.
I watched your video from June 24, 2024 before this one. Although the large boulders are still there, the road north of that spot has seen some major improvements. Thank you for sharing.
thanks for the trip..i'm glad to hear it'll open again by the time i ( hopefully ) make it back down there.......i've driven it yrs. ago , and wanted to do it again...
I LOVE your video. I am severely depressed. This video brings me back to the good ole days in the 80s. Lots of fun going to the lakes . Canyon-apache- Roosevelt
Amazing to see. My wife and I drove the Trail back in the late 1990's and it was scary then. It really should be a one way road with weight and length restrictions. I laughed when I saw the "guard rails" I had forgotten just how pathetic they were.
Thanks for the comment..ya, I doubt the guardrails would keep a bicycle on that road. I'll have another video up as soon as the road is fixed. Thanks again
@@charleysdaytrippin Oh ya , 20 years a go i hike fish creek from the bottom of fish creek hill at the bridge , all the way to the dam that holds back apache lake. Spent the night at a big pool of water half way. There was small chubs or minnows of some kind in it. So you can find fish in fish creek. That was back when we got alot more rain.
I live in Tonto Basin and was on a group side x side ride to Tortilla Flat from Roosevelt Dam on May 7, 2019, just a few months before the road closed due to flooding/rock slides. Absolutely beautiful and breathtaking scenery. I'm looking forward to a time the road reopens, at least for 4x4 vehicles.
Thank you for the update. I’ve really missed being able to use the Apache trail! I used to take my family there a lot, especially my grandchildren. It’s going to take quite a bit to make the road safe again.
thanks for the great comment. I've been told the road will reopen in Sept. to 4x4 or high clearance vehicles, similar to before it closed. Ill do another short video when it reopens. Thanks again. Charley
Im happy to hear this! The road was closed the year before we moved here. It looks like there’s still a lot of work to be done. I can’t wait to drive the whole thing. Great video!
A few miles on down the road from the bridge there used to be a campground you could drive into and camp. My family would stop there occasionally on our way to or coming back from Apache Lake. There was a cave that you could enter at the base of a cliff and hike through to an opening at the top and get a nice view of Fish Creek and the campground that used to be there.
I use to do this road at least once a month to the bottom and down the road a bit. I would lead a small group of about four to five jeeps down this. The newbees were worried some but after a while you get use to it. Thanks for showing this I am going to send this link to other jeepers.
I'm anxious awaiting them to finally repair the road so I can drive it clear through for the first time. I've been to the closed gates on both ends. I imagine this project to reopen the road will take some time as I believe there will work to mitigate future flood events, but it'll be worth it. It's a unique road that just adds to the tourist magnetism of Arizona.
@@CEK0549 apache lake is a great getaway..Maybe check to make sure you can get through because at some point they were going to close the road to install drainage pipes etc.
Great video. I want to try BikePacking and have a route planned from up on the rim down to Peoria. I saw bikers on your video. Are they able to get from Roosevelt to Tortilla Flat? Considering the damage, I dont see that road opening any time soon. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the great comment. The road is open to bikes and hikers all the way through. It would be a fantastic bikepack. Apache lake resort would be a great stop along the way. Its open but only accessible by car from the North end so not crowded. Great views and camping along the edge of the lake..(for a fee). Thanks again
its about a mile and a half down. 30 minutes is about right..i was a little over an hour getting to the bottom with 1 stop at the waterfall and several minutes filming. Thanks for Watching.
This video is great. A nice little place that the locals and few others know about. Like all these videos, if people know it’s there, they will come. They will ruin. They will destroy. And these nice little places to get away to will be overrun with quads, campers, and morons

This video was made in Arizona 10 miles north of the town of Tortilla flat. Its the third in a 4 video compilation. The first video will give all the pertinent information (The apache trail part 1). Hope that helps
If you look at a map, you'll see the west end of Rt. 88 (the Apache trail) goes from Apache Junction past Canyon Lake and Tortilla Flat, down Fish Creek Hill, and past Apache Lake to the Roosevelt Lake Dam and Rt.188 on the east end !
thanks for watching and commenting..the video is an update as of March. But ya, i agree, March is never gonna happen..Hopefully it'll be open to high clearance vehicles by September. 37 million $ has been approved for repairs with millions more expected to allow for further repairs all the way to Roosevelt lake. so we will see how fast they spend it.
ADOT is waiting for approval from the government on a couple things and then they will start work. Supposed to be open later this year to high clearance 4x4 only.
It is, but repairs have begun. Road crews clearing boulders and vegetation, then the main repair will start in July. Should be drivable by sept. Thanks for the comment
