Cozy Isolated Close Circle Mysteries with a Wintery Theme? This is Peak Mara.

I've never seen your channel before but I've always joked that my favorite super-subgenre is locked room murder mystery thrillers that take place in ski lodge 10 years after another suspicious death. This video was made for me!
Also, the Turn of the Key made me cry so dang hard. Great recommendations all around!

I think the snowy setting is one of the reasons I really enjoyed Murder on the Orient Express. Wonderful winter read!

They all sound so good! Ugh that feeling of wanting to read so many books, but knowing there’s physically just not enough time. The ever- growing TBR 🎉

The new one by CJ Tudor, The Drift, would also be great for winter too. It’s definitely more dystopian thriller than mystery thriller but a cracking read.

I read Sleep on your recommendation and very much enjoyed it! But I need another 1 -2 hr deep dive/commentary video from you, please!! You have an amazing intellect, and I really enjoy your analyses on different books/social topics. I love all your videos, but those are my absolute favorite, and it's been a while!

Soon to come, hopefully! 2022 was really stressful at work so that plus my autoimmune disease = absolute exhaustion. Hoping to get back to it in the next couple of months

I’m reading Francis Duncan’s Murder for Christmas at the moment. It’s also a cozy English countryside murder mystery.

An underrated mystery series is the collaboration between Mary Higgins Clark and Alafair Burke who Co-wrote the Laurie Moran Series where they solve cold cases by recreating the timeline. So, it’s a simulated isolated close circle mystery.

Love this genre of mystery and great for winter. Have read several on your list and they were all good. Going to check out the ones I haven't read.

Last One Alive by Amber Cowie was a good winter read for me. It is set in BC (Canada) so all of the rain, wind and clouds definitely worked to create the right atmosphere.

I’m off skiing for a week on Saturday and have yet to decide what to read in the plane so thank you for your excellent timing 😂
I really like Crossed Skis by Carol Carnac - the mystery itself is fine but is bumped up to one of my absolute faves as it was written and set in the 50s and is just fascinating to me in how modern it seems and how little the ski holiday has apparently changed! (Should say doesn’t meet the isolated closed circle definition but still a snowy mystery!)

Looks like it's finally time for me to pick up an Unwanted Guest and even though I've already read One by One by Ruth Ware I think I still want to read Shiver. Thanks for the recs. Snowy isolated thrillers are my fav

Loved this video, and love many of these books.
Read An English Murder this holiday season due to your recommendation and thought it was great.
Louise Penny’s Let The Light In is the 9th entry in her long running series, and all set during a snowy Christmas in the quaint town of Three Pines.
My favourite of her books, with a great mystery at it’s core.

I read Scent of Almonds last week. I'm not sure if it was the translation; or the cliched set-up; or the stereotypes - but I'm glad it was only 120 pages! The solution was ok, though.

..and,of course,on the subject of Christie:
Three Blind Mice (and other stories). If you're looking for an isolated closed-circle, snowed in, murder mystery - they don't get much better :)

  • @rymhreads

I really enjoyed An English Murder and found the politics of it (sadly) very timely. The Honjin Murders is also set in the snow, as is Murder in the Crooked House (bonus, that one is also set at Christmas) - which I know you have lined up for reading - hope you enjoy them when you get around to them!

I did read Ruth Ware's Turn of the key and the lead POV character sometimes fell into the trope of 'too stupid to live'.. but I did love the set up for it, just was bummed at the resolution. And I just checked out 'One by One' by Ruth Ware from the library.. just seemed perfect for the winter :) And I also like the dual pov (You must not like Peter Swanson or Riley Sager books LOL_)

Love to see Cyril Hare on your list. One thing I like about him is he lacks the little Englander mentality, that smugness which can make you grit your teeth every time Agatha makes a joke of Poirot for being a funny little foreigner.
My personal fave in the snowed in and people start dying is Anne Holts 1222.

Thank you for the excellent suggestions! What are your thoughts regarding "Rock, Paper, Scissors" to this list? It doesn't have a big cast of characters but i do believe there's snow. On a slightly different tangent, what is the name of the book (closed circle mystery) set on an island? I think you really enjoyed this recently. Thank you!

I've never heard of a point of view character. Is that the protagonist?

    • @bookslikewhoa
      @bookslikewhoa  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It's the character whose eyes we are seeing the world through, so sometimes the protagonist, sometimes another character, sometimes it is multiple different ones, etc.
