This is an older book, but I always recommend it. The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. I read a lot of these books and am not usually surprised by anything, but this book had a twist I never saw coming and a perfect ending. I loved this book.
I loved "Never Lie" by Frieda McFadden. It's the first book I read by this author and it gripped me right away. It surprised me because I thought I had the entire plot figured out half way through the book and was like "jeez, how simplistic and predictable!" Then the plot turned and turned and I was like WTF just happened?!? Totally didn't see that coming. Great read! I'm now about half way through "The Housemaid" and I can firmly say this author is solid. I can't put her books down!
I love anything and everything by Harlan Coben especially "The Woods", which I started and finished yesterday. Look Closer by David Ellis is one of the best books ever. I've heard great things about John Marrs What Lies Between Us. If you've never read any of the Lee Child Jack Reacher series, they are good fast-paced action-packed thrillers. You can start with the first one which is Killing Floor, or jump in toward the middle and do 61 Hours which is my favorite so far.
And the other book I have loved is next of kin by Kia Abdullah… it blew my mind. I am still thinking of that book…. Really really impressive and yes you won’t predict what happens
Some of my favourite backlist thrillers: How to Disappear by Gillian McAllister The One by John Marrs Stranded by Sarah Goodwin I Know What You've Done by Dorothy Koomson As Long As We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard Playing Nice by JP Delaney The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean The Son by Jo Nesbo The Passengers by John Marrs Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh Some of these are a bit over the top because I tend to enjoy that! No idea if any of these are your reading tastes but I guess the synopsis should help? Wishing you luck!!!
Hey Ashley 👋 I have some recommendations for you and if you'll just listen to me you won't regret it!!! It's a series by David Ellis: The Black Book The Red Book Escape You will get closure at the ends, no cliffhanger. The Twist in the first book shocked me to the extent that I closed the book, took a break to calm myself and then I got back to it.
SHARI LAPENA!! I would have to say she’s one of the best Canadian writers I’ve come across. Her books are super popular at the library I work at and now that I’ve read five of her books this year so far, I am recommending them to everyone! I have two more here to read this weekend but I got sidetracked by another great thriller and Canadian author, Samantha Bailey! She’s fairly new so only two books published, third comes out next month but you can read it for free with a prime membership for the month of February! I’m halfway thru it. I really enjoyed watch out for her. Her first book, woman on the edge was good but not as good. Now her latest that I am reading on my kindle app is ok, we shall see how it ends. Shari Lapena seems pretty high caliber for a Canadian writer. My favorite so far is probably someone we know. The couple next door was also pretty good and all of her books for me can be read in two days easily. The unwanted guest was kind of Agatha Christie-ish to me. All of them keep you guessing until the end! Where do there people come up with their plot ideas? I am really wanting to read the Taylor adams one you mentioned here about the author getting pissed at a one star review! I had to chuckle, I’ve been adding your recommendations to my good reads and the day after I added Taylor adams no exit, someone donated a paperback copy to the library. I LOVE working at the library as I get to see all donations for our books sales first hand and I buy a ton of them myself! I have a book collection of about two thousand plus I operate a free little library in the summer months at my cabin at the lake.
I just finished 'First Lie Wins'. It has the con job and cat and mouse elements. I found it to be pretty satisfying and was fast read. You might enjoy it too.
I feel like with Riley Sager books, everyone has a different favorite! I loved Lock Every Door and Home Before Dark but my friend hated those and loves The House Across The Lake.
Hey Ashley. I canno't recommend anything by Irish thriller writer and ex lawyer Steve Cavanagh highly enough wether it's his legal thriller Eddie Flynn series or one of hius many standalones be it 13, twisted or his most recent standalone Kill for me, kill for you which is a reimagining of strangers on a train for the modern era which is out now in the U.K or on March 20th in the your neck of the woods in the U.S. I would also highly recommend Canadian high concept thriller writer Linwood Barclay, his stuff is so good that it has had me so freaked out at times I've had to check that the doors and windows are locked properly before bed. Give No Time For Goodbye, Elevator Pitch or TOO Close To Home a try if you go down the Linwood Barclay rabbit Hole. Happy reading from a scottish fan of your channel.
@@dessertcomes1st He’s probably the only author I read in one 24 hour period. I’ll pre-order a book & when it hits my kindle I finish it the same day. He’s my favourite,
I read Look Closer based on your previous recommendation, and I loved it. It was a 5 star read for me. 😊 You are spot on about Riley Sager’s writing. I can’t figure out if I like his books or not anymore. lol. We are also on the same page with Freida McFadden, fun easy books to read. 📚 I feel I like similar books to you, so I really appreciate your recommendations. 🎉
The Good Lie >>>>>> Every Last Secret. Every Last Secret was kind of anticlimactic. The Good Lie, on the other hand, has to be one of the best thrillers I have ever read.
2 5⭐️’s that I’ve read recently are The Enigma in Room 622 by Joel Dekker and Adrift by Lisa Bietau. Not necessarily fast paced but have fresh storylines/plots that aren’t the standard thriller. I liked this video and agreed with most of them😀
I've read most of these books. Many are due to your recommendations. I like another author, John Marrs. I read The One and really liked it. Not sure if you recommended this. I want to read his newest book, The Stranger in Her House.
Omg this is definitely a much needed video for me cuz I'm in a thriller slump as well😂 I've only had one or two thrillers that I gave 4⭐ these past two months, and others were all disappointing reads.
Based on the ones you’ve listed (I’ve read most of them) I think you would like Flight by Julie Clark, if you haven’t read it already. I’ve also found that Keirsten Modglin reads quick like McFadden, popcorn like you said. I call them filler reads lol same thing with Shari LaPena or Mary Kubica, filler thrillers if you will. But Flight is fast paced, survival and thriller. I really think you’d like it
I recommend three that I recently read. (1) The Couples Trip by Ulf Kvensler, (2) The Heiress by Rachel Hawkins and a twisted one How Can I Help You by Laura Sims. Since you read Falling, you will enjoy T. J. Newman's next book Drowning. Happy reading.
Hi , I’m new here and I just came across your video after finishing “ the housemaid” Psycology thriller. Thank you for recommending so many others books I did not know about . I’d also recommend you reading the silent patient by Alex Michaelides if you’ve not yet.
I feel this thriller slump so hard 😅 but I recently read an arc of Kill For Me, Kill For You! And I gave it 4.5/5 stars, I think it could be one you’d really enjoy!! 😍👏 it’s my favorite thriller I’ve read so far this year!
THE GOOD LIE BY AR TORRE Please this is the BEST murder mystery novel i’ve ever read, it’s just as good as The Silent Patient, it’s so easy to read like Verity but also it gives a sense of what the fuck is happening? like you have no idea what is going on until you finally reached the twist and everything just CONNECTS. like OH?? OH?!? OH THAT’S WHY THIS AND THAT HAPPENED??!!! It’s just THE BEST experience of reading a murder mystery novel in a while. It’s so entertaining and it doesn’t have any boring chapters. It even includes romance in the book so good!
Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough. Despite reading loads of thrillers, I never figured out the ending. Actually got my hubby to read it...the author fooled him too. So fun.
I just finished that last night, && I agree with you. It was really good. I’ve read 6 of her books. The teacher was my next favorite behind the housemaids. & I also thought the coworker was my least. I found some of the twists a little ridiculous but over all very twisty and shocking.
I recently read Keep it in the Family by John Mars. I really liked it. I love thrillers. I have read a lot of Frieda McFadden books and only 1 so far is under 3 stars for me.
I’m not certain what you’ve read but I recommend Blood Wedding by Pierre Lemaitre, The Family Tree by Steph Mullin, Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine, Sleep by CL Taylor, and Unsub by Meg Gardiner
I loved the writing retreat! Like you said, it's super ridiculous but very fun, so I always recommend it to my friends who like thrillers and mysteries.
You absolutely must read the book Stranded by Sarah Goodwin! It is a mix of survival thriller and horror all told with a reality show theme. Rght up your alley! Every time I watch one of your videos I think how much you would love that book. 😬
Great list! I would recommend Playing Nice by JP Delaney (it looks long but it's all short chapters and reads very fast), The Perfect Ruin by Shanora Williams, and He Started It by Samantha Downing
I really enjoyed First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston. It’s a 2024 thriller and it surprised me how quickly I got into it and I found the plot really engrossing and compelling. It also had some fun twists!
Freida McFaddens book the inmate, do not disturb, the perfect son, and the locked door are some of my favs of hers besides the ones you mentioned. All very fast paced and super twisty !!
Jar of hearts - Jennifer hillier very similar writer to Robyn Harding. Or Too Late - by Colleen Hoover. Yes she normally does romance but her couple thrillers are absolutely incredibly fast paced with a lot of emotion at the same time. Really good
Oh another thought was a Lauren Beukes book. I read Broken Monsters and it was good but I really want to read Shining Girls bc the Apple TV show was excellent
Kill for me kill for you - one of the best plots twists I have ever read in a book: and hit its all your requirements, fast paced, cat and mouse and yes you will finish it fast
The Last Thing She Ever Did by Gregg Olsen. Just read it recently and keep thinking about it. It’s one that will literally cause you to gasp at some of the twists. One of the best books I’ve EVER read.
I’ve read several of these books too & currently reading Drowning by TJ Newman & it’s so thrilling so far. Best thriller I’ve read recently is The Push (not new but omg if you haven’t read it - it had everything I love in a thriller!)
I read all these books awhile ago- but I remember really liking them- The Passenger by Lisa Lutz, Tell No One by Harlen Coben (the French film based on this book is really good too), Bath Haus by PJ Vernon, Insomnia by Sarah Pinborough, The Cold Kiss by John Rector, The Current by Tim Johnston, and I may be in the minority with this one....Dead Ringers by Christopher Golden.
I couldnt put down Fool Me Once or The Boy From The Woods. Harlan Coben never gets talked about on booktube and he is a great thriller writer! Fool Me Once is definitely the most shocking twist ending of those and now it's a netflix adaptation and it is so good too! If you haven't read Darling Rose Gold omg u have to. It is definitely cat and mouse and has a crazy twist. The whole thing is crazy. It's darkly funny too it is just SO good!!!! It will get u out of a slump for sure. And I haven't read it yet bc I wasn't convinced but selfishly i want u to read First Lie Wins everyone is loving it saying it is a fast paced cat and mouse thriller.
Hi Ashley, I'm tell you again to give a chance to Donato Carrisi. It's everything you look for. His first book, The whisperer, it's a first of a series of 4 so if you like you can continue. It's a page turner but more with a dark element than a funny one. I hope you will try! Tanks for your videos, I always make a lots of good discovers! 😉
New releases that I really loved are Good Girls Don't Die by Christina Henry, Only if You're Lucky by Stacy Willingham, The Teacher by Freida McFadden, and First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston. Two older titles that are really great are Sweetpea by C. J. Skuse about a woman serial killer (part of a series) and The Exes by Brandon Massey. I just listened to The Exes the other day and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I believe it was released in 2022.
I've heard that First Lie Wins is just the main character's life story with no twist and turns. Is this true? I even canceled it in my order from Amazon
Enigma of Room 622. French translation. Unlike anything I’ve read before. Also, in case you have not yet read these: wrong, place wrong time and just another missing person both by gillian mcalister. Thursday Murder Club. I found the first book to be not the best but worth getting through to get to the others. Mayflower Murders by Anthony Horowitz, there is a sequel too. Some of these are more twisty mystery then thriller.
I read First Lie Wins in January and I really enjoyed it. It's a tad unbelievable in parts, but the writing is good and there are enough twists to keep it interesting.
The books that you mentioned of F. M. My first three was the once that you showed as well. I wasn't really a fan of those three. I had recently read another book by this author called The Inmate and I thought it was good. Now finishing up Ward D and so far I think its pretty good.
Great vid and I do like Riley and Freida books. I will look into the other ones you listed. I am currently reading hemlock island not sure if you would like that one. Anyway ty for sharing
I love the housemaids part one and two so much..i already pre-ordered the third book!! I also loved never lie!! I love Frieda McFadden so far....im some what new reading ans really been loving Frieda McFadden and Harlan Coben!
I loved Ward D by Frieda. Also, Carl Haissen's Bad Monkey was a FUN read. He's friggin hilarious. I don't know that we would call that one a thriller but there is a crime investigation involved and it's just really great. Also Apple TV is supposed to be doing a series starring Vince Vaughn that they've been teasing us with for over a year. 🤦
Well most of the ones like this that weren’t already in your video I saw on GR you have already read lol. Gone For Good is my favorite Harlan Coben book but it’s been years and I do plan to reread to see if I still feel the same. I have some I haven’t gotten to but hope to soon-First Lie Wins, Search Party, and Everyone Who Can Forgive Me is Dead. I seem to have a lot of the same things I’m looking for in thrillers so I hope these are good and I can come back to recommend them. I have also enjoyed James Patterson books that are co-written by David Ellis, I think because they’re mostly written by David Ellis…so some of those may be worth checking out.
Read The Last One by Will Dean! It isn't perfect, but damn it is a fun time, and very different from the typical thrillers. It was one of my best reads from last year! :)
Thrillers have been tough for me, too, this year, and I had similar feelings about First Lie Wins. While there are moments of lulls, I actually really liked The Fury by Alex M.; it was nice and twisty.
One I read recently is Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell, read it in 2 days! Also this isn’t a short read, but fast paced and I guess in fantasy horror genre, but my fave book of all time is N0S4A2 by joe hill.
Have you read, "One of the Girls" by Lucy Clarke? I stayed up til midnight to finish - it was SO GOOD. If you havent, I think you'd like it: twisty, surprising, short chapters, highly bingable.
If you like a good crime novel that has a mystery element but not necessarily a thriller you will absolutely love Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. Literally one of the best books I've ever read in my life.
The cottage by Lisa Stone I am starting, my friend just got me Tony Marturano series Psychosis, Cursed, and Haunted. I also just got James Patterson The Girl in the Castle, overnight guest Heather Gudenkauf, Winter Sisters by Robin Oliveira, The Nesting by CJ Cooke I really liked Darcy Coates Voices in the Snow it’s a series. I am starting book 2 a couple times I jumped w book one hahaha
Highly recommend Jar of Hearts by Jennifer Hillier!
This is an older book, but I always recommend it. The Kind Worth Killing by Peter Swanson. I read a lot of these books and am not usually surprised by anything, but this book had a twist I never saw coming and a perfect ending. I loved this book.
Excellent story.

It surprised me because I thought I had the entire plot figured out half way through the book and was like "jeez, how simplistic and predictable!" If you haven't read:
Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell go for it, the other two are:
The Lies I Tell by Julie Clark
Behind Close Doors by B A Paris
I love anything and everything by Harlan Coben especially "The Woods", which I started and finished yesterday. Look Closer by David Ellis is one of the best books ever. I was thinking of The Woods too!! One of my favorite Harlan Coben books!
@@kaelinreads6748 if you think the Netflix adaptation would also be good, you'd be wrong. 🤣
I love Harlan Coben too
@@YummyGummy77 just finished Gone For Good. It was awesome.
I just finished The Pines by Blake Crouch and Loved it. I love all his stuff!
I’m flying through “the first lie wins”. I like it
Agree with everything you said about Riley Sager! Lock every door by him was an equally twisty cat-and-mouse book, if you haven't read it already.
And the other book I have loved is next of kin by Kia Abdullah… it blew my mind. I am still thinking of that book…. Really really impressive and yes you won’t predict what happens
Some of my favourite backlist thrillers:
How to Disappear by Gillian McAllister
The One by John Marrs
Stranded by Sarah Goodwin
I Know What You've Done by Dorothy Koomson
As Long As We Both Shall Live by JoAnn Chaney
Stillhouse Lake by Rachel Caine
The Nothing Man by Catherine Ryan Howard
Playing Nice by JP Delaney
The Last Thing to Burn by Will Dean
The Son by Jo Nesbo
The Passengers by John Marrs
Thirteen by Steve Cavanagh
Some of these are a bit over the top because I tend to enjoy that! No idea if any of these are your reading tastes but I guess the synopsis should help?
Wishing you luck!!!
I second As Long as We Both Shall Live & Thirteen
I second The Last Thing To Burn and The Nothing Man 😍
Hey Ashley 👋
I have some recommendations for you and if you'll just listen to me you won't regret it!!!
It's a series by David Ellis:
The Black Book
The Red Book
Escape
You will get closure at the ends, no cliffhanger.
The Twist in the first book shocked me to the extent that I closed the book, took a break to calm myself and then I got back to it.
Look Closer is absolutely fantastic read. I gave it 5 stars.

I just got into Chevy Stevens’ books and I read 3 of hers this year 😂 my favorite so far was Those Girls 🥲
I am planning on trying Chevy Stevens this year! Wanting to discover all the great Canadian writers! I work in a library her books are pretty popular!
Magpie Murders and First Lie Wins were both 5 star reads for me so far in ‘24.
Hidden Pictures by Jason Rekulak!
I loved Falling! The Chain was pretty good too.
I read First Lie Wins in January and I really enjoyed it. It's a tad unbelievable in parts, but the writing is good and there are enough twists to keep it interesting.
The First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston, a little slow at the beginning but then it rolls. The Other Mothers by katherine Faulkner - very good read!
The books that you mentioned of F. M. My first three was the once that you showed as well. I wasn't really a fan of those three. I had recently read another book by this author called The Inmate and I thought it was good. Now finishing up Ward D and so far I think its pretty good.
Have you read Darcy Coates Voices in The Snow?
Great vid and I do like Riley and Freida books. I will look into the other ones you listed. I am currently reading hemlock island not sure if you would like that one. Anyway ty for sharing
Would recommend Hero by Thomas Perry. Flew through that book in a day. Jeffery Deaver and Steve Cavanagh also never disappoint.
Reed "ward D" too.
It was written by Freida Mcfadden. And it's AMAZING
Lock every door by Riley Sager, Pretty girls by karin slaughter or My perfect daughter by Sarah Denzel. None of these are new but all kept me hooked.
My absolute favourite is Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris - just this one though, as I didn't particularly enjoy any others by this author.
I really like „Dear Child“ by Romy Hausmann. I read it back then when I was published here in Germany and also enjoyed the Netflix series ✨
Oh WAIT how could I forget?? James Patterson - "The Summer House" and "The Coast to Coast Murders". Could NOT put those down last summer!!
One I read recently is Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell, read it in 2 days! Also this isn’t a short read, but fast paced and I guess in fantasy horror genre, but my fave book of all time is N0S4A2 by joe hill.
I really enjoyed First Lie Wins!
Have you read, "One of the Girls" by Lucy Clarke? I stayed up til midnight to finish - it was SO GOOD. If you havent, I think you'd like it: twisty, surprising, short chapters, highly bingable.
I want to read The Chain so badly!
I would recommend Brain Damage or Want to Know a Secret, both by Freida McFadden.
First Lie Wins is excellent and very fast paced. It was my first five star of the year. Highly recommend!
If you like a good crime novel that has a mystery element but not necessarily a thriller you will absolutely love Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. Literally one of the best books I've ever read in my life.
I second that. The story occupied my thoughts for a very long time... so good!
I highly recommed "The Night Visitor" by Lucy Atkins. It's so good!
Not a new book, but I read it right after The Writing Retreat and loved it - Birdman by Mo Hayder. Could not put it down!
Kill for me, Kill for you by Steve Cavanagh was great!! Heart pounding and fast paced!
I recommended Firefly Diaries for you. Anything by CC Warrens.
I read " I will find you" by hatlen coben based on your recommendation and It was a great read. Thanks
