Thats why you could literally grab Toms guitar from his hands while plugged into his amps and effects using his favorite eq settings.. and STILL not sound like Tom... because you dont have Toms hands and fingers. On the flip side.. Tom could grab your guitar, and sound like Tom.. Ive been playing for 25 years now.. it took me a long time to understand this but any good player will always know the saying "Tone comes from the player." You could tell straight away you were listening to a Tom guitar/blink song, and so few to no people even to this day still, have copied it. I love how it has that dirty, twangy vintage country treble sound, but how he can still get so much bass out of it down low at the same time. I've nailed the Enema/TOYPAJ sound to the point where people can't tell the difference with a Marshall amp, but have always wanted a Mesa just for the hell of it. Seems a bit useless for the house though, you'd never be able to crank it up. A slightly thinner pick works well too, for me at least. Tom also played everything he possibly could on lower fretted, higher/lighter toned strings to get that country twang. Rather than playing the same note on lower, higher fretted strings.

Good video. And I agree, Tom's old tone with the Mesa Boogie and Marshall amps blows his current tone with the Vox and Fender amps out of the fucking water. Also, I think part of the reason why Tom's live tone sucks nowadays is because he doesn't mic his amps
If you can't afford a Mesa Boogie (Or even find one in Europe), I'd recommend a PRS MT15. I honestly think it sounds better than the two Mesa Boogies I've previously owned, but that's just my opinion. It's definitely worth checking out, especially at that price. It does the classic TD tone really well, and on the clean channel with a Vox Mystic Edge pedal, it does the AVA sound too. So really you get the best of both worlds here.

I feel like I've finally nailed Tom's tone..I'm using a mesa duel rec through an Orange 2x12 & a Marshall JCM900 through another Orange 2x12 both at the same time via an ABY pedal with the Marshall turned up just on clean & just gain (at about 4) on the duel rec. It's the closest I've ever got if not spot on, & it's taken me alot of amps/pedals along the way & I just couldn't get anywhere close before. Tone blending through two amps in my opinion is the only the to achieve Tom's tone.
Gary Stone Have you come any closer since posting this comment? I use the same approach with the same amps and also boost the JCM 900 with an Ibanez TS-9 with good results. I’m starting to think he may have also blended a fender or a vox in the studio with the Mesa and Marshall for that compressed chimey sound that goes with the distortion in the Enema/TOYPAJ/BCR era. It’s a tricky sound to nail!
My closest attempt is (shockingly) using an iPhone in the GE Labs app (free). Search the "tone cloud" for "blink". I uploaded my preset there, and if you have a strat-ish body with a humbucker you will get basically the entire Enema sound.
Every major label recording is gonna have a minimum left, right and center guitar tracks with minimum 2 mics on each track so that’s actually 6 tracks that can be mixed and eq’d differently to make a completely different sound then the amp actually sounds like and likely will have a couple different amps and probably pedals so ur never gonna get the same tones from a record generally. When I record guitars I use a live amp with 2 mics on the can, one room mic and also have a direct line into the Board recording a clean guitar track to use a plugin/modeled sound to blend in so 8 guitar tracks to blend and mix

On Amazon, I found a Neck and Bridge Invader copy pickup set for $17, and I put the Bridge pickup in my "Bullet Tom DeLonge*" guitar and it sounds amazing. (*A Squire Bullet Stratocaster with a 1 humbucker 1 pot pickguard installed)
Jcm 900 mid gain blended with mesa boogie dual rec with moderate to higher gain. Turn up the treble and midway on mids and bass. Remember that tom is getting that great tone from the power section of both amps. Don't go crazy with the gain! For that enema of the state tone use an LP. I read that he used jerry finns guitars on enema and toypaj and never got to track with his signature. I use a similar set up when i want to jam out to blink and its pretty Damn close. Or i could be completely wrong too......
Tom had his gain on 10 on both his Mesa triple rec, as well as the clean channel on his Jcm 900. It was a triple rec not a dual rec, they DO sound different and handle power amp distortion differently from each other. Sources: Tom Delonge.
I was looking at Charvel Joe Duplantier Signature Pro-Mod San Dimas® Style 2 HH White w/ BUNDLE You think this is a bright guitar or more dark tone? Looking for a bright sound and adding invaders, thoughts 💭
i think you hit the nail on the head with the invader working best with a strat. toms tone changed dramatically even when he was already using an invader and the Mesa + Marshall combination, just through a Les Paul. but did tom actually use a neck invader? and a bridge in the les paul perhaps, as cant seem to get to the bottom of if he used a neck or bridge invader in his models as the fender specs for toms signature states it uses a neck invader
@@littleredguitars2 thanks for confirming. I messaged you on Reddit , asking about setting on my mesa. Are you able to check your chat on there. Thanks bro
@@littleredguitars2 also where has this assumption that he uses a neck come from? Did they put them in the signature models only? because according to the fender Info that’s what it says it uses. I think you need to make a video to clear it all up! ;)
I have a schecter omen 6 and it has a basswood body, and a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. From what I've read about basswood, it's not too bright or too dark. What would you recommend I use in it in terms of pickups? I really enjoyed the video and found it very useful.
Hey man, I have a Strat with a Semour Duncan JB humbucker. If I put skinny top heavy bottom strings and use those Mesa pedals you recommended, will it be close enough to Tom's tone without changing the humbucker to an Invader?
Tom's current setup (fender/vox) just bothers me to no end, especially in comparison to mesa boogie. What do you think of Matt's Orange in comparison to Tom's current rig?
So I have a Gibson SG, but the pickups are mini humbuckers. Will the dirty fingers still work? I'm afraid that the dirty fingers might not fit and I'll waste my money.
Hey man. Awesome video as always. I'm geting an Epiphone S300 Strat and i want to put it a Seymour Duncan Invader SH-8. What do you think? I understand that epiphone strats have the neck made of maple. Thanks.
Ok so I have a standard mexican strat with stock single coil pickups, and an axe fx 2. What can I do with the axe fx to get the take of your pants and jacket tone? I'm thinking blending a couple amps and cabs together. Not trying to buy a bridge pickup to do any hardware altercation if I can get 80% of the way there.
i really have no idea how you're gonna get your single coil to sound like a humbucker. it's not that easy. a lot of company's make humbuckers that are single coil sized for fairly cheap
Hey I know this video is old but im wondering how I can get a similar tone with a solid body rosewood telecaster? Like would I need a lighter or heavier pickup? Because I only have the stock pickup. Also like you said fender would not really work too well but I have a fender mustang I V.2 where it has a multi effects, so I don't have any pedals. I really just use the American 90s effect and edit the sound with Fender Fuse. Overall the sound is not bad but I would like it to be a lot beefier and more out there like yours.
I used to crank a Peavey XXX with a slight scoop sound gain about 7 or 8 through a Randall cab and it was a pretty good sound for blink style. Wasn't an exact replica to his sound but it was a very nice set up
I just got the the throttle box pedal and I'm trying to dial in Tom's tone. I have a Fender Bassbreaker and I'm using Tom's signature Strat with invaders. Any advice?
theres no right answer to be honest. but generally it should be used on a clean setting for the amp. every amp is different though so i dont have an exact answer on how to set everything. you'll have to play with it a bit and get used to it. learn the pedal. you'll eventually learn how you'll want it set.
I have an Ibanez Gio (les paul shaped). Unknown stock pickups at the moment. I am currently using an Ibanez Tone Blaster half stack, just so you have a frame of reference. Not sure what my aim is in telling you this haha
Hi man, I have a question about your guitar amps. What amp is more darker, richer and warmer and less brighter, screamer or strident. The Peavey 5150 or the Mesa Boogie?
Which channel did Tom use the red channel (mordern) or the orange one (vintage)? tubes? Also what are the amp settings? I've got a Triple rectifier just because.
Andspen Boyy honestly for that early blink sound, if you cant crank your amp super high for personal reasons or what not, try the blue mosfet drive i believe it is (he uses them), and if you cant afford that, the rat proco pedals shape up good. They can go from a high output overdrive to distortion to fuzz tone. There filter knob is a reversed tone knob, so fair warning! Id also suggest a chorus pedal and just a overdrive pedal will do you good. If you wanna get fancy on riffs, the ehx freeze sustainer pedal is fun for outro melodies. Also check toms equipboard online!
I have an Ibanez RG with a fixed bridge, basswood body, and a used Invader that I got for cheap (it's the Synyster Gates version with the chrome poles), so it's the closest thing I have to his signature Fender Strat. I also use the string gauges as him, though they're D'Addario instead of Ernie Ball. I'm using a Roland VS-20 as my interface with the stock Rectifier patch (R-Fier Lead) on its bundled amp editor (which uses the BOSS COSM processing found on their Cube amps) and I've been trying to figure out what settings he used on his amps.
I basically want to know my end goal equipment for the Tom sound. I'm looking to eventually work up to whatever I need for that sound. I'm a bit of a newbie now so I'm really looking for help
You know, I can get really close with my Strat stock single coils and I love how it’s so bright. Paired with the blackstar core 40 given that the amp has a bit of a dark sound. Something to look into. But I’m my opinion, a single coil pickup is the way to go

yeah bare knuckle is pretty expensive, but butt fuck it.... i have a epi standard with emg 81/85 zws and a gibson sgj and i play trough a peavey 5150, i want that gibson to have a more disorted tone like the emg one. here in hungary we have like 1/3rd of the fucking us salaries so this is a pretty good rig for me.

Hey man! First, I really enjoy your videos. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge about guitar as well as Blink-182. Would you put the Dirty Fingers in a Agile Al-3000? It has a solid mahogany arch type body, Canadian maple top, one piece mahogany set neck, and Ebony fretboard.
😕tone wood is irrelevant once plugged in…. The pickup magnets don’t interact with wood since wood is not conductive… all the tone comes from the string tension vibrating between the bridge saddle and metal fret or nut. The wood is out of the equation, the pickup magnet doesn’t register anything but the suspended string. So body wood, neck wood, and fret board wood don’t play any part of it. That’s not how the science of electric guitar magnets works. “Tonewood” plays a part in resonance unplugged. And I would go as far as to say even unplugged the fret board doesn’t play any part since the only time the string touches it is behind the fret it it pinched behind.

bass 11 o'clock , mid 1 o'clock, treble 3 o'clock, presence 11 o'clock master 1 o'clock gain 2 o'clock
And I used Boss SD 1: tone 1-2 o'clock level 1-2 o'clock or full gain minimal
In Take off I think that the bass should be slightly lowered and the treble ones should be raised.
Dude Ranch:
Mesa with Mesa Cab with Brit V1 SM 57 Ribbon 121
Bass 3-4 o'clock mid 1o'clock treble 3 o'clock master 1 o'clock presence 11 o'clock gain 3-4 o'clock
And Boss SD 1 too (in several songs)
I think this really looks like the sound of Tom and I like this sound.
That's all.
@@ВладЗолотов-э6б thanks for this guide! really helped me soujnd like blink!
Edit: I meant to say sound not soujnd lol

What's the eq , tone, gain you use for tom's tone on the amp??
also, he uses the neck invader pickup in the bridge position - as do i… and it’s sick as hell.
No he doesnt
Fail
@@littleredguitars2 yes he does
@@Rocksmithsno he doesn't lol its been proven
I was looking at Charvel Joe Duplantier Signature Pro-Mod San Dimas® Style 2 HH White w/ BUNDLE
You think this is a bright guitar or more dark tone? Looking for a bright sound and adding invaders, thoughts 💭
i think you hit the nail on the head with the invader working best with a strat. toms tone changed dramatically even when he was already using an invader and the Mesa + Marshall combination, just through a Les Paul. but did tom actually use a neck invader? and a bridge in the les paul perhaps, as cant seem to get to the bottom of if he used a neck or bridge invader in his models as the fender specs for toms signature states it uses a neck invader
Tom only used the bridge invader. I confirmed with the builder of his guitars a while back
@@littleredguitars2 thanks for confirming. I messaged you on Reddit , asking about setting on my mesa. Are you able to check your chat on there. Thanks bro
@@littleredguitars2 also where has this assumption that he uses a neck come from? Did they put them in the signature models only? because according to the fender Info that’s what it says it uses. I think you need to make a video to clear it all up! ;)
What settings do you set your mesa for tremble, bass, mid, gain, presence for enema of state and TOYPJ sound?
I have a schecter omen 6 and it has a basswood body, and a maple neck with a rosewood fretboard. From what I've read about basswood, it's not too bright or too dark. What would you recommend I use in it in terms of pickups? I really enjoyed the video and found it very useful.
I have a telecaster with single coils and a marshall amp with an ibanez tube screamer, can i get toms tone with that or a similar tom tone?
Nope. Never gonna sound like tom with a tele
@@littleredguitars2 alright, thanks for the info!
Hey man, I have a Strat with a Semour Duncan JB humbucker. If I put skinny top heavy bottom strings and use those Mesa pedals you recommended, will it be close enough to Tom's tone without changing the humbucker to an Invader?
Would getting a epiphone les paul standard and a peavey vypyr with the bass treble and gain all at 10 (no mids) get me close to dude ranch tone?
Tom's current setup (fender/vox) just bothers me to no end, especially in comparison to mesa boogie. What do you think of Matt's Orange in comparison to Tom's current rig?
Unless his rig has changed, Matt wasn't using Orange Amps. He was using their cabs but not their amps.
Thanks, man! Good sound
So I have a Gibson SG, but the pickups are mini humbuckers. Will the dirty fingers still work? I'm afraid that the dirty fingers might not fit and I'll waste my money.
TrickerFor Life dirty fingers will not fit. some brands will make custom mini humbuckers that Will fit though
Hey bro... how can i get the eric clapton tone any suggestions?
Lol
Hey I know this video is old but im wondering how I can get a similar tone with a solid body rosewood telecaster? Like would I need a lighter or heavier pickup? Because I only have the stock pickup. Also like you said fender would not really work too well but I have a fender mustang I V.2 where it has a multi effects, so I don't have any pedals. I really just use the American 90s effect and edit the sound with Fender Fuse. Overall the sound is not bad but I would like it to be a lot beefier and more out there like yours.
you should really check out the bare knuckle warpig pickup
Which one is better to sound like Tom, Mesa Boogie Throtle box or Flux drive?
mooer 011 cali dual micro preamp is the closest pedal to the mesa boogie tone i've heard
@@evanage Try the Mooer GE Labs app, it's free. Search the "tone cloud" for "blink". There's one preset there, and it nails TOYPAJ/Enema spot on.
What pedal for his clean tone and reverb?
I used to crank a Peavey XXX with a slight scoop sound gain about 7 or 8 through a Randall cab and it was a pretty good sound for blink style. Wasn't an exact replica to his sound but it was a very nice set up
Do you know what kind of pick ups i can put on my Telecaster Modern Player?
Not sure what my aim is in telling you this haha
thx man
nice vid!
btw, where do u get strat with only humbucker on it ?
or did you just buy standard strat w/ s-s-s pick up and you changed the pickguard ?
Its the tom delonge signature strat
:)
Hi man, I have a question about your guitar amps. What amp is more darker, richer and warmer and less brighter, screamer or strident. The Peavey 5150 or the Mesa Boogie?
Mesa
Which channel did Tom use the red channel (mordern) or the orange one (vintage)? tubes? Also what are the amp settings? I've got a Triple rectifier just because.
modern
What pedals are the best for tom style guitar sound?
C.B Jaguar He uses light flanger in his clean tones and he doesnt use distortion pedals. His pickups drives his guitar along with his amp
AndrewLiong MXR EVH flanger and a Fulltone Fulldrive 2 MOSFET
Can i get this sound with a mark v ?
You know, I can get really close with my Strat stock single coils and I love how it’s so bright. Paired with the blackstar core 40 given that the amp has a bit of a dark sound. Something to look into. But I’m my opinion, a single coil pickup is the way to go
It's really not the way to go
littleredguitars2 If I’m happy with it then it works. Just a lower eq with an extremely bright guitar
I think the hardtail bridge would have an impact. That guitar looks like it has a normal strat bridge, so maybe not the biggest factor
Should i put a Dirty Fingers in my Gibson SG ?
Hmm maybe. Bare knuckle warpig would be killer in there
littleredguitars2 Lol are you based outside the US? because Bare Knuckle stuff is like $300 or more here.. and I love all your BKP vids they sound amazing.. but not everyone can just throw down $300.. i'd love to soon.. and thanks to your vids and some others i've seen.. i think i'm going to just bite the bullet and get a set bc they do sound amazing. I have a Mesa Stiletto Deuce 2 head and I'm pretty sure BKP will sound almost the same maybe a little brighter thru my amp compared to yours.
yeah bare knuckle is pretty expensive, but butt fuck it.... i have a epi standard with emg 81/85 zws and a gibson sgj and i play trough a peavey 5150, i want that gibson to have a more disorted tone like the emg one. here in hungary we have like 1/3rd of the fucking us salaries so this is a pretty good rig for me.
marshall jcm series 800 + mesa boogie cab + ds-1 distortion pedal (extra grit) ... this is the closest set up i can get to replicating tom's sound.
Would buying the Epiphone Tom Delonge signature basically give me sound that I want?
depends on your amp/pedal setup
TrickerFor Life not really, i got it but it sounds nothing like the gibson signature also there are many better sounding epiphones than the TD one
Sturmfrei why did Tom Delonge's Gibson version get discontinued?
What pickup would you recommend for a Gibson SG
i bet a gibson dirty fingers would sound great in an sg. it works nicely in mahogany
Would the invader be good with a yamaha pacifica since its pretty much a strat? What are the mesa pedals that are the best for his tone?
got that exact Setup, its perfect!
pedal wise the closest i got was the marshall jackhammer. sounds a lot More like a rectifier than a jcm IMO
@@clicheguevara9917 Ok cool thanks. I have the HSS pacifica setup. Would it be smart to replace the alnico single coils with single coil hot rails? Also are there good pickups designed for indie/emo tones? If you could help me that would greatly appreciated if not thanks for your time, advice and effort.
@@Trauzzinator i Think the stock Singlecoils are already very good. try to have a coil split Option on the invader. has Some serious les paul Junior vibe

hello
what chords does tom delonge use?

hi I just purchased an invader and was reading a bit on Tom's setup and noticed that he used a neck invader in the bridge, would you suggest me doing that to get his tone better
no, he did not use a neck humbucker
+littleredguitars2 oh OK thanks for your answer appreciate it

Hey Man! I know this video is a bit old, but I'm glad I found it... Never knew about the Ernie Ball Skinny Top Heavy Bottom strings... I'll have to check them out... (I've mostly just used Regular Slinky throughout the years...) Noticed the Drum Kit in the background... Is this your Jam/Practice room? Do you play Drums as well? Just curious... :) Cheers Bro!
i dont drum. that was my dads kit. i moved out a few years ago.
I use a invader bridge in a schecter lady luck into a fender gdec30 running a blackface amp model with a boss ds1 and it sounds shockingly close to the enema of state era.
This is the cheapest route to toms early tone ive found

You can find a tube mesa boogie pedal on ebay, thats sounds the best for non mesa amps
I have a joyo California sound pedal and it models a Mess Boogie and I freaking love it. Perfect for playing Feeling This.
I have a ibanez spider with a super distortion pickup in the bridge not to impressed with the sound thought about changing it out for invader have emgs in my schecter c1 platinum sounds sick
Jon, could you do one for Matt Skiba's tone? Back in the Good Mourning/Crimson days his tone was pretty sweet.
if i have his new e 333 what pickup would be best, it already has the dirty fingers pickup
the dirty fingers will work well but you could also consider the bare knuckle warpig. Its great

How about a ibanez rg spiderweb with the invader
what would u recommend for my voodoo sg gibson i need it to sound more like this
gibson dirty fingers
Can i get his tone with his epiphone and a vox?
For his newer tone
he doesn't mic up live, he just goes through the di because of how hard travis plays drums
That's with the AC30's and Twins. Before, he did mic.
Tbh i dont play but i kinda am into listening to this ❤ tom 4 life
is that a standard strtr mim?
A video on the mesa Boogie Throttle Box would be cool. :)
I don't have one. Since I have a mesa amp I doubt I ever will
Hey man! First, I really enjoy your videos. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge about guitar as well as Blink-182.
Would you put the Dirty Fingers in a Agile Al-3000? It has a solid mahogany arch type body, Canadian maple top, one piece mahogany set neck, and Ebony fretboard.
sounds like the dirty fingers would work pretty well in there. better than an invader for sure
can you tell me whats the name of that fretboard swipe at 13:03?
Sami Turjman The songs name is The Rock Show ( late answer i know )
what an amp setup for Tom tone?
How much money for an amp?
What a coincidence...i had a pretty bad case of swamp ash right when you mentioned it in the video.
glad i could help
Sounds like you’re in e flat
Agree to disagree
I’m surprised with how big of a fan you are that you didn’t know Tom used vintage 30s almost exclusively for like the biggest years of his band lol
Drumset is see...
i like better the newer tone...
Butchered the song at the end
Are you the real Jay Z?
who the hell would want his shitty tone?
Tom's tone has been awful since 2004
Not untrue
Its better now
