Couldn't agree more about the pickups, apparently the worlds biggest mystery still hasn't been solved on what they are. This is just a collector's item tho. I wish i was someone who had access as you could triple your money w/this in probably a month.
I’m looking forward to a MIM production model. I’ll be on that pre-order fast. John is the reason I started playing 25 years ago and never stopped. I don’t want this strat - I friggin need it!’ I already own too many strats. But I can’t turn this one down.
John's 62 Strat had Seymour Duncun SSL1's when he got it. He used those pick ups from Californication up until recently rejoined the band... After stadium arcadium he was playing guitars with humbuckers more on his solo stuff, and when he rejoined the band he put some kinda higher output single coils in his strat.
On the subject of the pick ups I believe they went for that just because Jon put some fender pickups in his 50s Stratocaster and he probably liked it so why not go for the same fender custom shop high and pick ups for the 60s? I mean if he was fine with the SSL's or the random American made whatever Stratocaster pickups, I'm sure he's gonna be happy with these hand made ones. Would've been great if fender did one of those videos where they show footage of the master build team checking the guitar. We can only hope that they will shine the lights on the mystery of these pick ups that we never knew for sure.. but honestly if he doesn't have the original ones from 62 any other boutique high-end 60s vibe pick ups will do😅
"John was nearly impossible to work with." Yep, that's on brand. Someone should've just told him, we can make your Martin acoustic too, we can make a custom fkn midi stack if you want! He was probably like yea you can do it but leave me out of it. I'm not doing any interviews. Guess he fell for the $ in the end, like everyone
@@luciano0593Yeah, for a guy who was uncomfortable (back in the the early 90s) with the band playing stadiums because he thought they were selling out and weren’t playing to “real fans,” this seems like a real “jumping the shark” moment. I mean, the guy is already insanely rich, so I’m trying to understand his mindset here.
Abigail Ybarra came out of retirement earlier this year. The video, search for it on here, “Abigail Ybarra and Castedosa. The ABI Model”, is what she was working on earlier this year. She is very elderly. So you can bet your bottom dollar that she wound these pickups for these guitars. But like he said in this video, John would not have tested the pickups and offered any modifications, Mike Mccreedy certainly did. If John had been involved they would have been advertising that big time. They are probably just going to be Custom shop 60’s of whatever John chose, but Abigail either wound all of them, or oversaw the winding while it was happening. She’s so elite that she could probably wind a single pickup in 20 minutes. So she could have done all of them over a few weeks. It’s not crazy numbers of pickups she had to wind.
My American Vintage Reissue 62 Strat from about 20 years ago was $1400. I'd expect a MIM version of this to be $2000 or less. I'd still play my reissue daily, but keep the MIM signature as a collector's item, like I'm doing with the Flea pink bass. For the 20 grand version... I wouldn't be able to afford this AND a divorce, so I'm deciding to stay married and just wait for the MIM!
I gave some thought about this guitar. It's one of the best relic jobs I've seen and I have to give it to them for doing such a good job. It's way better than the prototypes John had on the road. I wouldn't be able to play the guitar though, because I would want it to stay in the state that John had it and not add my own wear. So, in the end, I think it would be better to buy a vintage refin strat with that same money instead. This is a guitar that you buy because in 10 years it will double or triple in value.
This is for collectors over players. I was talking about it with other RHCP fans and said how stupid it was to buy something that replicated damage and they were like "but then it'd just be a regular strat" as if it still isn't? Especially if there is more than one, it just makes people look foolish with money to burn. And if you tried to use it to perform, you'd look like the ultimate poser.
Abigail retired some time ago, so id say these are definitely just random 60s style custom shop pickups, which like you said, SUCKS for 20k lol. In the klinghoffer rig rundown, they mention how Josh's strats had Abigail pickups which fender have a supply of, under lock and key, for special guitars. But regardless, to fit with the rest of the guitar, this should have pickups replicating john's originals/whatever are in there.
Incorrect. She came out of retirement earlier this year. If you search “Abigail Ybarra and Castedosa. The ABI Model” you will see her, she is very elderly, but that was March this year. So I believe she would have wound these.
@thegoodguy44 what did I say that was incorrect? - she is retired, but often does small batches for fender. - she doesn't perfectly replicate specific pickups. She is known for being THE pickup person since Leo was building guitars. Don't try put people down with your narcissist tendencies when in all reality, you just added nothing to the conversation.
any predictions as to when they release the affordable version? they will probably price it at around 2K- 2.5$, at least I hope the don't go above that
His guitar has a 3-way switch and not a 5-way. Not sure about the 7.25 radius neck. Read from his former guitar tech Dave Lee they changed the radius to 9..
Apparently Paul Waller wound pickups for John’s 55 Strat after he came back to the band for Unlimited Love. So there’s definitely a spec they could have used, but this being the 62 it would have been interesting to solve the mystery of which pickups he’s actually using. Maybe he is using stock Abigail Ybarra 60’s?
This is just my opinion. Signature models aren’t cool, and I’ve never been compelled to want to have a guitar, that was directly tied to one specific artist. I just don’t see how they’re special. For a new artist on the come up, I’m sure it’d be amazing to get a signature guitar. For someone like Frusciante though, the only allure, would be money ( which he already has ) Everyone seems to have one these days. Rick Beato has a signature guitar lol. Slash has like 30+. James Hetfield has over 80 🤣
20 grand for a FACTORY strat is ridiculous... The cost for all those parts, build time, relic labor, and licensing. All that can't even crack 8K!!!!.. You can buy a top of the line PRS for that!. I love JF, he is my all time favorite player. But Fender is ridiculous. Especially when you realize that the guitar's assembly can be done allmost entirely with a philips head screwdriver!!

Man, I'm a HUGE Frusciante fan. LOVE his work in the Chilis. And while I would never get a replica guitar of his, I'm happy for those who get a chance to mimick his guitar, if that's really what floats their boat. But TWENTY THOUSAND DOLLARS AND THEY DONT EVENT SPECIFY WHETHER OR NOT THE PICKUPS ARE MADE COMPLETELY AUTHENTICALLY TO JOHN'S SPECS???? The pickups ARE the tone?!? You pay enough money to BUY A NEW CAR and you don't even get a 100% spec'd, down to the finest details recreation?? It makes it even more pathetic - have fun dressing up as a rock star and playing in your room with your toy $20k guitar prop. Just disgusting.
For the price you can get a nice custom-shop Stratocaster and a high end amp with boutique pedals. Heck add few thousands and you can get a “real” vintage strat. 😅😅.
@@blakebeamer i dont think the reason is known, but id assume warping/cracking as you can see it cracked along the neck pickup typical screw spot in early pics right before its swapped out, sometimes it causes weird resonance issues with the neck pickup, people refer to it as 'stratitus' with old strats lol
Why tf would anyone buy this? 1) wanting the specific wear and tear that's on John's strat is insane and obsessive. 2) even if I did understand valuing someone else's guitat, this isn't even his guitar! It's a replica.

same here as a doctor. stop hating man. this guitar isnt for players
I just saw on Andertons website-it will be a run of 100
Fender and John still have 2 more. Strat with maple neck and the telecaster 🎉

It’s to build hype for the crappy mass produced Mexican build they’ll be charging over 2k for

At 20k, it's absolutely disgustingly priced and a complete cash grab from Fender. Cannot get behind this.
