People in this comments section completely missing the ”studio” in the title and the fact that this board was designed for a session player. It’s not “minimalist” for me or you, but looks pretty darn minimal and sensible for a professional session player. Makes sense to me 🤷
Did a session on a couple of tracks last week for a local country artist. Barber Burn Unit, Deluxe Memory Man into a REVV D20 & ‘59 CS double bound Tele! Amazing what you can get done with just a few key components! 😊
Great simple setup! My studio board is a hybrid mix of analog and digital and took me two or three years and about $12,000 to build. I also have a gigging board that that cost about $1000 with a Hotono Amero Mini at the core with a few other pedals. Thanks Kieth!
all i need is a modeler and a looper all that other stuff is over kill for my needs. but some people love their intricate signal chains and more power to em
Fun board but this is not minimalist. Minimalist would be having just the handful of pedals you need to get “your sound” or for your music. For example a drive pedal and/or a boost pedal plus maybe a delay or reverb. Maybe a looper.
Keith, thanks for the video!😎👍✨ During the Pandemic I put together my Main Board (Gator Extra Large in Lime Green) and what I ran into with the two Gator Bricks (a Five brick and an Eight brick) is that two of my pedals required more milliamps than the bricks would allow. I had to plug in two pedals into wall warts. The good news was that the board was so big and tall that with a power strip under the board, I am able to put both wall warts, the two bricks, and run some USB cables off of one cord. I have no complaints about the Gator Power Bricks but the 9 volt pedals that required more than 100ma were definitely a surprise.😳 I have two other pedal boards, one that has my older 1990s and 200s era pedals and a newer "Garage Rock" Budget Pedal inspired board that gives me some cool, cheap pedal sounds the other boards don't. Sometimes having Genre specific boards is a good thing too. While I love my Main Board with about $2300ish into it, I have a hard time thinking I would pull that out and play a Dive Bar (I play Punk inspired music mixed with Folk and Country) where another board would be a better fit.😉👍✨
I absolutely have to have the old, black MXR 10 band eq on my board. It has an input level and output level slider on the pedal. It can “Sweeten” your tone just by playing with these levels. Leaving the eq flat. I have a very subtle curve depending on which amp I’m using. It’s a game changer!
Another fun video, great, and thanks, as always! I'm mainly in the studio these days and have a few pedals, some going back to the '70s, but for the odd smaller live thing; Cali 76 Compressor, Crowther Hot Cake + Effectrode Blackbird Valve Pedal (my 'always' on) with these 2 I get 6+ OD combinations), Strymon Deco (ADT / Chorus / Slapback), Neo Ventilator 2 (Leslie), TCE Alter Ego (3 tape delays), Strymon Flint w 'Favourite Pedal - mainly for Plate Reverb but handy if there's no amp with Trem & Spring. Portable and fun.
Great board Keith. I admit it: I tend to hoard. I have a huge board tucked away in the closet that has a Boss ME-30, a couple Radial Tone Bones, and a Fulltone Clyde wah. Then there's my slightly smaller board sitting in a spare bedroom that has a TC Electronic Polytune, a Clyde, a TC Electronic Flashback 3 delay, a Dunlop volume pedal, a Boss PS-5 Super Shifter harmonizer, a TS-9, a TC Electronic chorus, and a Bogner Ecstacy Red. My latest is built around a Voodoo Lab Dingback that has a built-in power supply, Polytune, Fulltone Deja Vibe MDV-3, JHS Tighty Whitey compressor, Xotic XW-1 wah, Xotic SL Drive, Wampler Tumnus, and Dunlop mini volume. I have a separate path for effects loops that has a TCE Corona chorus, a TCE Flashback, an MXR M300 Reverb, and an Xotic RC booster. Then there's a drawer with a whole bunch of pedals, including the latest Jam Pedals Rattler. What do I use most these days? A Boss GX-100 muti-FX/modeller that I can carry with one hand, gig bagged guitar on my back, and 19 lb Headrush FRFR-108 powered speaker in my other hand. Oh and BTW, I do use the Boss GE-7 graphic EQ and I have two of them. Did I mention I tend to hoard?
I always shied away from digital OD and distortion pedals because they felt wrong… until the Helix. After dragging myself away from a big (and expensive) board with fancy pedals that weighed as much as my amp, I’ve played out with just an HX Stomp XL for almost 2 years with no regrets.
I am currently working on my third pedal board. It is a recreation of the board that I had 32 years ago. Some of the pedals are not available anymore or they will cost an arm and a leg to purchase. So I will go digital with that for the reverbs, delays and modulations and use an effects processor. The drive section was the main factor. So I was able to get the main drive that I used back then. It was triple the cost used than it was 32 years ago new. I have made a few updates but the overdrive should sound the same. I have a second board that is awesome and does everything I want but I wanted to recreate the tones of yester year. I was I would have kept all those pedals back then.
I have a minimalist recommendation. The Ampero II Stage. I use it with an expression pedal and one external overdrive a Notaklon by JHS. This suit is a great modeller and it will also do amp capture. All for under $1,000. Give it a look.
I always learn a lot here, and for that Keith, we are lucky to have you my friend! I think I might be the opposite of your OCD about pedal boards though. I used a Boss BD2 alone for years, that's it. When I bought a new Egnater 20w head, it didn't have reverb, so I bought a TC HOF Verb pedal, and iSpot PS, but what to mount it on? I had just bought a new Microsoft Ergo KB for my PC. Right size, so I wrapped it in duct tape, and put down the Velcro. All aboard, that became my pedal board for years. I got some heat for that, but it was all in fun, and I left it as long as I could. I had to buy a real one when I bought a comp-90. Thanks much Keith, I learned a lot, as usual!! Peace --gary
I'm glad you are happy with your board and I'm sure it will sound great. I built my own powered with a voodoo lab 4x4 and it's really quiet. The only digital effect is my Strymon Flint. I can't see me changing it any time soon. Thanks for posting.
I use a 1982 BOSS BF-2, an MXR analogue delay, a ProCo Rat Distortion (which I rarely use), my guitar and a valve driven Marshall amp. I love the sounds I get. So, I'm reluctant to get any more pedals, or effects. I was contemplating a compressor, one time. But, I'm in love with the raw sound as it is, and I also have great control of my guitars at high volumes. Studio, or live, performances.
Given I rarely play outside of my own room my main aim was to get everything I own out to be used. But broadly you’ve done the same thing but at a lot smaller sized pedal board. Good job.
Keith, I should be your 790 viewer per my calculations from TH-cam viewers info and let me tell you I wish I’d missed the earlier ones today. What an excellent video from you and yours. So much great content and fun I can and will use on my first board which has been in the works too long. Thanks so much. BTW, really enjoyed, yep, that’s the word, the font and blue sparkle of the ID for the names of people and companies. Something different from everyone else. Keep playing.
Depending on your needs a wah, fuzz , tuner ,overdrive , compressor, eq , modulation, delay ,reverb is all you need. Getting a multi effects unit can save some space for sure.
This is exactly what I have been thinking about for a while now. What pedals do I really need to carry to gigs and practice? There are pedals I have, that don't get used much.
I love to watch your journey from start to finish(?) Rest assured that I am not going to buy anything on your board just because it's there. I am thinking about getting a buss pedal but that was in the works long before this video. If you need ideas for a new video, I would love to watch all the boring parts where you make all the little adjustments until you get the tone you are looking for. That and some commentary on your thought process would be greatly appreciated as I try to dial in my own board. Keep up the great work Keith. If I ever find myself in Siracuse again (I was just there 2 weeks ago) I would like to buy you lunch.
A "one better" response is that I'll never question your choices (on anything) and always question my own (on everything) - also leaving that choice to you.
Love the video and the channel. The whole pedal board thing is pretty new to me as someone restarting guitar after 30 years. I would love to go down the pedal tone rabbit hole but my wallet says just grab a Valeton GP200 for £270 and noodle till my hearts content!
I always sincerely appreciate your humble and informative videos. I will probably at some point, refer back to this one (I really like that BOSS EQ and already had my eye on it, even if to just roll off frequencies below 100). However ... I feel the need to worthlessly add my two-bits into the mix. While I have some petals, I don't have a pedal bored. Had one for a little time. Threw it out. Two many wires, too much useless junk. Been playing close to 63 years now ... and Yeh. I can play. At 77, do not doubt that. But I have to wonder about why so many players have such a dependency on boxes to make their living or to feel sonically satisfied. Seems there is not enough emphasis on what is being played these daze. I have a hard time believing that all these pedals are necessary. And in fact, wonder about the value of recording guitar work that permanently has sounds. I remember the days when engineers wanted straight guitar tones so a producer could have choices in modifying the sounds as they mixed the song. I used to bother Justin Ostrander about such things; but have since given him quiet relief and I'm certain he is happy about that! So, having some intellect left remaining ... I realize that my ancient babblings are of no value to anyone so I shall conclude. And just say: Boys of noise will have their toise ...
I must say, this video was well timed. I was just inquiring about minimalist studio board set ups. I'd also say looks like you've created a beauty. My Tube Pilot, Skysurfer and Prophet suddenly look quite haggard, basically nailed to repurposed old barn wood. Should we keeping an eye out for a Barber-5watt fuzz in the near future?
I have loved Truetone products going all the way back to the mid to when I first saw the Visual Sound Route 66 V1. It seems they made power supplies their main focus in recent years. I think it's about time they bring about a couple of new effects pedals. Maybe a Tremolo and Reverb dual pedal?
It does surprise me that there are still guitarists that put their beloved and often not that inexpensive gear on the floor in front of them and continuously step on it 😂. But seriously, apart from the obvious dangers to your gear and the inconvenience of having to crawl on the floor to adjust any settings, this setup also creates a long and complex signal chain, especially in a 4CM setup. And the solution is so easy : get a simple midi controller (M-vave, 30 bucks, wireless !) and a effect loop switcher (i.e. G-LAB midi switcher for 4 effects) for your stompboxes. Put all your effects safely in a box close to your amp, and easily reachable without crawling on the floor. Put the midi controller on the floor. You can still put your amp channel switcher on the floor as it is not part of your signal chain. Same experience, but simple, safe and sound, and no crawling required ;))
Looks really good. I been thinking of upgrading my pod go for the hx stomp xl for a while. You might have pushed me over the edge. Wondering if you can get the tc chorus sound with hx stomp xl. I want that sound as well. Thank you for a great video.
Thanks Keith. I've been looking at a Boss EQ pedal for a while. Now I'll have one. Play mostly acoustic into the house board with, compression, Chores, Tremolo, and Reverb (in that order) on my pedal board. I really like the EQ ahead of everything else. How about doing a video on a mini version of an acoustic board? Just a thought. You're really on target with "Truetone", it's on my board.
Saw Jedd Hughes last video using your board...or one you lent him. Bukovac's board is not for your average, non professional, non touring player. That has to be incredibly heavy ! Anyway, to each his/her own...on a personal level, I think less is more when it comes to pedals. Three channels I enjoy watching, ...yours, John Cordy's and Jedd's.
Hello Mr. 5 Watt, for lack of a better name- Keith? I think that's right. Anyway- I'm sure you get messages like this all the time, or maybe you don't read your comments- a lot of creators don't- Idk- but I wanted to let you know that you inspired me to go on and buy a PRS that I had been wanting for years- it arrived this morning, and I can't put this thing down. I've been playing over 30 years, but I've never been in a position to really pull the trigger on anything but budget gear. I won't bore you with the story- you've heard it a million times- but finally I realized something, watching you in fact- it's about priorities. Ppl like me are never going to have a time in our lives when it's comfortable to buy a really nice instrument- so it comes down to whether or not you want it bad enough to sacrifice, to push, to bleed a little for your art- so I did it. I didn't just go out and buy something, I saved for a while, prepared my finances to make it as easy on myself as possible- and while I was doing so, I started shopping. But eventually I was able to pull the trigger, and she arrived this morning- I'm in the honeymoon phase right now- and loving every second of it. It's so nice to have something that's fully intonated and sounds good no matter where or how I play on the neck- totally different experience versus buying budget gear. It was even in tune when I pulled it out of the box. No setup required, plug and play- literally. It's a Paul's Guitar by the way, if you're wondering. Always felt they should find a better name for it, but that's what it's called. I'd like to get a DGT eventually as well- but that's' a long way down the road- if at all.
I kept buying pedals I thought would sound better than the sim in my pod go... the truth is i sold even my drive pedals. This is totally because of convenience and money. I wouldnt have sold them if I thought I was missing much tone though
Ok sure, compressor, eq, and 2 drives + HX Stomp isn’t “as minimal as possible” but idk, getting all delay, modulation, reverb, and stereo routing all from 1 box feels very minimal to me!! Folks are falling out over like 1 “too many” pedals up front and revealing themselves to be quite silly
Thinking of doing something similar but having my stomp JUST as an amp and cab and then having delay and verb after the helix. Would there be any problems with this? Could I just run out from the output of my last wet effect in the chain into a mixer or interface?
When you look back to even twenty years we didn't have have as many opinions Go back fifty and you had only three maybe four options at best Things certainly have come a long way.
I have 3 pedalboards. 1 medium sized Pedaltrain with 2 rows. A slightly bigger homemade pedalboard and a briefcase sized pedalboad. I use the briefcase as my primary board. I holds my switcher and 8 pedals. Things like volume, rotovibe and wah off the board. My other two boards will eventually become purpose built for specific sounds, while the briefcase board is more general purpose.
One question Keith. Why a HX Stomp XL rather than say an HX Effects? Let's face it. It's highly unlikely a session guy is going to use amp models. Was it simply a question of the form factor? EDIT. Just got notification that my Plus has been delivered. 🙂
I think I’d maybe prefer the at a glance scribble strips under the buttons of the HX Effects but live the amp models would offer some redundancy. Hmmm. Choices!
@five watt world Keith, I am sure that you knew the answer before you even had a chance to ask it...and that is....as with guitars...one more pedal than you already own.....your welcome....
Hey Keith, I hate to bother you, I ordered one of your 5 Watt Dad Hat on 9/14/24 and have yet to receive it from (Tee)Spring off of your TH-cam channel's website is this a normal turnaround time?
Can i just suggest an idea i have been trying and have become very happy with. i use a valve amp, now a Friedman IR-D, on edge of break up, where an aggressive attack will drive the pre-amp. The thing i discovered is if i use a compressor, with a mix knob which i love, low compression, but lower the output of the pedal, it cleans up the sound and gives it a touch of spank and clarity for funky riffs or just cleaner tones. Like the idea of using a clean boost to cut rather than boost signal. to me it sounds way better than rolling off the guitar volume. Love the idea of cutting a piece of paper the size needed.
Oh, an EQ pedal is also able to cut signal to a slightly dirty amp and do lots more. I guess this new approach to me is more in line with a sound engineers' approach to getting tones from a desk with eq and blending in compression, which is what i do when mixing live at times.
Great video Keith! Thank you so much for inviting me to be a part of the process! Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Thanks for coming along for the ride Jedd.
Beautiful, Keith. Thanks for letting us help in your quest!
Lol that Bukovac EQ moment literally changed my life
How?
@@DaveH8905that Bukovac EQ moment gave me clear skin and a clean gut biome
I have a Hotone Ampero as well. Great little multi-FX/modeller. I use the "Fliptop Soul" patch for bass tracks.
Love the TC Chorus P.M. Flanger. Been on my board for the last 30 years or so.
Yes best
As one who was clad in pass me downs, I concur; too big is a fit ! Great video Keith.😀
Thanks Alasdair
Eric Johnson is a Master Guitarist. Seeing him play live left me speechless.
It's wild people are calling 6-8 pedals with a bunch of extra under top hood expensive, multiple giant midi stuff "minimalist" now. Y'all are crazy
Sounds like you wish you shared his definition of minimalism.
To be clear, I love it and we need big pedal boards. It's a great video!
all i need is a modeler and a looper all that other stuff is over kill for my needs. but some people love their intricate signal chains and more power to em
Agreed-- I have been using the same 3 pedals for over 10 years. Any more than 3 starts to stress me out lol

Jedd sounded great in the intro! What a talent that boy is!! Great share, Keith!! Thank you, sir.

Very very nifty board . Truetone rocks for sure!
This was a very succinct and helpful video. The overview was great but having Jed demo it really highlighted the sounds of the pedals. Nice!
This is very nice, Joe Robinson uses only a Crybaby Mini, nobels odr mini, a hall of fame mini and pulls out great tone from his strat and tele.

I love the way you present your board projects. Big inspiration 🎉
Wow, I need more study, but that board seems to provide the greatest number of options with the least number of devices!
Truetone power supplies are excellent! still using my cs6 HX Stomp rig for 5 years without a hitch.
The Tone Press has been my favorite compressor by far
Great vid….looking forward to your follow-ups with this board.

I'm finally back but as it's the middle the night, I'll have to watch tomorrow. I like the concept. Hope you are doing well Keith.
HX Stomp is a great choice! super versatile for it's size!!!!
This is exactly what I have been thinking about for a while now.
What pedals do I really need to carry to gigs and practice? There are pedals I have, that don't get used much.
PLEASE come and do a session in the UK!

Reach out when you’re going to be around d Steve.
I've got the CS-6. I think it's great. That CS-11 looks really cool.
That’s a neat looking board, Keith. These are all great pedals too, so no room for excuses! 🥴😃👍
great video really enjoy the channel and just ordered my barber pedal in white for my pedal board.
Good timing! I was halfway through redoing mine when this was posted
I've learned so much from your videos. The research you put into them is inspiring. You're the Nardwuar of music gear.

Keith, I’ve got the EQ-200. It’s singularly sensational.
Compressor, SD-1, Tonex One, 10-band-eq, 100 Watt power amp, 2x12 V30. DONE!

No velcro is one of my mottos. Godlyke Power-Grip is my choice for grip tape.
I'd love for you to have some of your own playing in your videos.. I'm sure you're a good guitar player.
Thank you Keith
Great story. I really like that model…and it’s cool that those are Paul’s favorite specs too.
⚓️ Good morning 🌈 Thanks Keith 😎
Thank you Keith
I kept buying pedals I thought would sound better than the sim in my pod go... the truth is i sold even my drive pedals. This is totally because of convenience and money. I wouldnt have sold them if I thought I was missing much tone though
Good stuff as always!
Interesting! Thanks! :)
Id love to know the HX stomp settings and routing
Ok sure, compressor, eq, and 2 drives + HX Stomp isn’t “as minimal as possible” but idk, getting all delay, modulation, reverb, and stereo routing all from 1 box feels very minimal to me!! Folks are falling out over like 1 “too many” pedals up front and revealing themselves to be quite silly
Thinking of doing something similar but having my stomp JUST as an amp and cab and then having delay and verb after the helix. Would there be any problems with this? Could I just run out from the output of my last wet effect in the chain into a mixer or interface?

Always find your videos very interesting and informative. Keep it up I'm a big fan and don't forget to subscribe everyone
great content... saw this board somewhere else earlier being built... delivery is a bit dry thou :)
Ha! Just me doing my documentary style. See a live stream for a more “casual” version of me.
When you look back to even twenty years we didn't have have as many opinions Go back fifty and you had only three maybe four options at best Things certainly have come a long way.
Can I borrow that pedalboard to run into my 66 Super Reverb?!! Hehehe
Is the Plus pedal going to be available or ??
Yes, we’re building more right now.
I feel like the more pedals you have, the more sense it makes to utilize a switcher of some sort.
Shout out to That Pedal Show and Daniels GigRig line of switchers.....one of those is on my short list....
One question Keith. Why a HX Stomp XL rather than say an HX Effects? Let's face it. It's highly unlikely a session guy is going to use amp models. Was it simply a question of the form factor?
EDIT. Just got notification that my Plus has been delivered. 🙂
The form factor yes, but having the amp models does add flexibility of course.
I think I’d maybe prefer the at a glance scribble strips under the buttons of the HX Effects but live the amp models would offer some redundancy. Hmmm. Choices!
I still hate that long sleeve, but I can't say that I don't catch the little things. Namastè.
@five watt world Keith, I am sure that you knew the answer before you even had a chance to ask it...and that is....as with guitars...one more pedal than you already own.....your welcome....
You sound slightly different. New mic or recovering from a bug?
Same mic. Early morning recording.
My minimalist build is a Fractal FM9.
Hey Keith, I hate to bother you, I ordered one of your 5 Watt Dad Hat on 9/14/24 and have yet to receive it from (Tee)Spring off of your TH-cam channel's website is this a normal turnaround time?
Jump on their customer service email. I find them very responsive. If you have a problem beyond that shoot me an email and I’ll kick it “upstairs.”
Can someone tell me what's going on with Jedd Hughes' strap button?
That’s a Parsons White B bender.
The Boss pedal is crooked. Driving me crazy! Otherwise, great board!
You buy 100 pedals, you keep 10. Let’s stop the dance.
Line 6 couldn’t make it in denim?
What was the tremolo he was taking about?
Just the bias tremolo on the Stomp xl.
@five what world-You will go over individual pedals in a what? 3:55
Patience young Jedi
My minimalist pedalboard = Fractal FM9 Mk II Turbo.
My maximalist pedalboard = Fractal FM9 Mk II Turbo
What, no reverb or delay??
In the stomp
Keith✌🏻🎸🎶
Yes, musicians abhor a pedalboard vacuum 😂
Yeah, but do you ever play? No pics or it didn't happen.
I just got it in the mail this week, but hey…
I guess this new approach to me is more in line with a sound engineers' approach to getting tones from a desk with eq and blending in compression, which is what i do when mixing live at times.
to me, through studio monitors, these do not sound like the amps mentioned... not a jtm or a dumble.... sounds flat and dull
lol stomp XL
Forgot these in my previous comment 😎🤘
Can you make a video on parker guitar?
Not sure it would get enough views.
Do you play, Keith? Not sure I have ever seen you play.
Most everyday, but it isn’t the thing that makes the channel run.
