    A few months ago I started to get into watercolor painting. Then I was recently diagnosed with a neurological disorder. I'm thankful that my ability to paint and draw are not affected yet, its been my saving grace. Heading to Amazon to check out the Mijello paints. Thanks! 🤗

    Newly minted card maker here, all for fun & spirit lifting but I've always been a fan of watercoloring. I got some pencils but realized pretty quickly I need a much lighter hand to use with those than I've got. I've saved a few things to some wishlists. Thanks for such an informative video that cost me less than 16 minutes!

    I followed your channel long time ago, and I realized that the time comes also the taste changes too. Nowadays I use the 32 kuretake gansai tambi watercolor set with Strathmore hot press watercolor paper. Both of them old suggestions from you 🥰😉

    A great review on your faves Kristina. I love the Gansai Tambi's because they are so creamy and the colours are bright, I recently used them to make some galaxy backgrounds and they turned out way better than I had expected. I love their metallic's too.

      I concur! My daughters bought me one of the larger sets, and I absolutely love them. The colors are so rich and vibrant yet they can also be soft. I'm with you on the metallics as well.

      I also have the Gansai Tambi 's; when I took a watercolor on line class, one of the first things I did was make a color chart that included drawing a thick black Sharpie line. The purpose was to determine transparent vs opaqueness in watercolor companies... the Ganzsai's have a lot of opaqueness. I found this exercise was a must!

    I purchased a Gansai tambi palette after seeing you use it a few times. It is great. Very affordable and the formula is fantastic. Very easy to achieve nice results, even for an amateur like me. I have the 18 colour. Would definitely recommend for a novice.

    I recently got my hands on the Paul Rubens paint sets off of Amazon. Oh I love the glitter sets he has, because the colors are so shimmery, and easy to use. You also don't need too much water to activate them. They come in a very well thought out packaging, beautiful presentation. The case is also a great size for traveling, much like the cute little black set you showed.

    Just realized I've never seen you use Daniel Smith watercolours. Interesting! I was just cursing mine this morning. :) I've just recently switched to using Arches cold press. What a difference it makes! I live in a very dry climate and I find that hot press just dries way too quickly to be able to really play with the colours and blending. Thanks for the tips!

    • @boopeep9670
      @boopeep9670 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know you were asking K Werner not me and I’m not a professional artist by any means and I’m just an ordinary person, but I love Dr. PH Martin liquid watercolors they are amazing both the regular and the metallics. My husband who is an architect and an actual artist LOL loves them also. Great for air brushing too. Only cons are if you are a fan of granulation you’ll be disappointed with the regular colors and the metallics have the opposite problem the metallic component settles out and will need a good shaking before dispensing and give them a little stir frequently as your painting to keep things evenly dispersed but that’s true with all metallics..
      With that said I love working with cake watercolors better. I don’t know why but I seem to feel I have more control of how much pigment I pick up. I know it doesn’t seem to make sense but that’s just me.
      I bought mine in sets, but if they sell individually I’d recommend you pick up just two or three primary colors that mix well and give it a try. Red yellow blue or magenta turquoise yellow
      Good luck and have fun.

    So appreciate hearing about your updates favorites. I picked up the multi gold palette after hearing u rave about them previously and I so love them having picked up a few more already tho I’ve yet to try them. As a newbie to watercolor I started with good quality more expensive products assuming the more expensive items would make me instantly adept at watercolor. Lol. So I’ve scaled back working more on techniques and basic knowledge tho I adore buying watercolor everything from paint sets to brushes to pencils and all in between. Loved the tip about changing our the pans to ones u like better I’d not thought of that. Thanks again for sharing all with us!

      Hi Kim! You're not really wrong in buying good quality products! I had an instructor eons ago in college who advised up to get the best you can afford, because they will often bring about better results, and you'll like working with them better, and you won't be fighting your tools and materials. However, the biggest thing he always emphasized was PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE!!! He didn't lie about that!!! Good luck with your watercoloring. It can be a challenge at times, but when it suddenly clicks, it is SO satisfying to see your work take shape. Oh, and one more thing: HAVE FUN!

I bought the pens recently and the results weren’t great. Now I know why. Can’t wait to try them with the right paper. Thanks so much for all that you do in our cardmaking community! I’d be so lost without all your wonderful insight. Not to mention your talent and creative ideas! I know you’ve done a bazillion videos on watercolor paper, but I searched and couldn’t find one that compared the whiteness against Neenah; only an older video that you showed Fabriano and another brand, that i can’t think of atm. So i was wondering how white Arches is next to Neenah Crest Solar White? I ask because I don’t always paint the entire sheet, but rather a stamped image that I’ll cut into a circle shape; leaving a lot of white on my card. That information would be so helpful! You can make anything work - but me, not necessarily. lol Anyway, blessings to you; you’re such a sweet person and i love your channel. Crafty hugs and thanks again

    These are really great recommendations. I have several of these. I started with the Mijello and did love the vibrancy.
    I decided to try Daniel Smith after so many recommending them. I have to say that they are indeed my favorite. I love them because of how they flow and because of their granulation properties. I LOVE texture so I LOVE granulation. As far as their flow, they literally dance across the paper when the paint touches it.
    I know that not everyone like those properties so it is definitely a personal preference.
    If it was not for flow and granulation, I would love the Mijello more.
    I also love the Gamsai Tambi for bible journaling. The Gansai Tambi seem to stay super vibrant w/o much color shifting on the bible pages. Also, there is never any bleed through no matter how much water or paint I use.

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh, yeah, that's one of the reasons I didn't like them--the granulation. I just want smooth smooth color. LOL! Most definitely personal preference. :)

      @suzettedorning9113 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Fiona! I have tried Yupo paper with watercolor (I actually got it for alcohol ink projects). I found out that it takes FOREVER to dry, and if you don't let it dry, you can wipe your work right off the surface and out of existence! Even if it is dry, if you get it wet, it will reactivate the paint and - away goes the art! Also beware if you use a heat tool with wet paint on Yupo: it moves!! Yeah... ask me how I know all this! Haha! Live and learn... I might try Yupo with acrylic, though I might just keep it for the alcohol inks!

    First thanks for making this video with a look at the products that work well for you. Watercoloring choices is definitely about personal preference from experience. I have been playing with the Finetec assorted gold paints on black paper and don’t know what to expect really. I was expecting a thicker paint so not so much of the Black showed thru. I tried two layers but the same bits of transparency show thru if that makes sense. I love them though even after trying four other brands. What say you regarding these paints esp on black watercolor paper? Thanks again.

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’d recommend putting a few drops of water in the paints and letting it soak in for a bit before going in with a brush. You’ll get a thicker, more opaque paint that way.

    I had recently bought the Fabriano Artistico 300gsm block a few weeks ago and it buckled like crazy( I did a light-medium wet wash and I already noticed some prominent warping)! Maybe I got a dud? But other artists online seem to notice that with Fabriano as well so watch out.

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I generally don't paint on the paper with it still on the block. I tape it to a hardboard. Perhaps that's why I don't get as much buckling?

    Kristina, I really LOVE my Arteza brush pens but when I tried storing then in containers with the points down there was a collection of color in the caps of quite a few colors. Have you had that issue since yours are also stored nib down? I enjoy your videos so much and always have room to learn more. Thank you!

      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh no! That doesn't sound good. I haven't encountered any issues with mine, thankfully. Maybe because mine aren't standing straight up? They're angled just a bit because of the container is larger? Not sure what the difference might be.

    It’s so funny but since I live in England, I remember watching a similar video of yours several years ago, and I couldn’t find the brushes you recommended.. all I could find were the R&L zens, so I grabbed a few and now you like them too.. so that worked out well! ☺️

    Hello a have a question about, paper between cold press and hot press

    • @MsHazza73
      @MsHazza73 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cold press watercolour paper is textured and hot press watercolour paper is smoother.
      Depends on your project and your preference whether you’d like your finished piece to be a more textured or smooth finish.

    I want so badly to see lightfast tests on liquid watercolors. Lol. I know that the Holtz Distress pads and stains aren't at all (I have a few pictures made from them that have totally changed color). But I am curious if any inks or liquid watercolors are.

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I'm aware of, the only lightfast liquid watercolors out there are the Hydrus watercolors from Dr. Ph. Martin's. There might be others out there, but those are the ones I'm familiar with. As for inks, most pigment inks are more light fast and archival.

    Great video, Kristina!!! I have alot of those products because you use them a lot. Big question: I recently bought the Arteza watercolor tubes and an empty palette. But a few days later, the paint was so hard I could not use. I thought I could do that. Am I wrong?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've heard that those paints are only meant to be used straight out the tube. I tried some similar paints a while back and had the same issue.

    • @kwernerdesign

      Mostly price point, and also I just haven't used them much. I need to make a point to use them more so I learn the colors. :)

    Hey Kristina, I’m considering some of the Zen or Escoda brushes you recommended but I’m wondering what sizes you’d say a cardmaker would want to start with... for coloring as well as background washes.

    • @clairetimko
      @clairetimko 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Same here! Very new to water coloring and want to know what to ask for for Christmas. Love your videos, I learn so much and get great ideas!

    • @msdixie1972
      @msdixie1972 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      clairetimko I ended up getting a set of 5 Zen brushes and a set of round Escoda Prado in sizes 2, 4, 6, 8 and I think there’s a 10. The Zen set had a nice wide wash brush and several other different ones not in the round EP. Both sets are ones she recommended so I thought they would be good to start with. She did say for lettering that 0 and 00 were good to have.

    In your opinion Kristina, which paper do you prefer for using distress and distress oxide pigments? Blending, stamping etc?

    • @kwernerdesign
      @kwernerdesign  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For only blending, I usually use Neenah Classic Crest Solar White. However, if any water is added, I'll use a watercolor paper.

    What is the difference in cold vs hot pressed?

    • @andrealavigne7824
      @andrealavigne7824 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hot press paper is very smooth, while cold press has kind of an irregular, almost bumpy texture to it. There is also rough, which is even more textured, though I don't think that's particularly useful for card makers. Hot press is very good for detail work, while I think the colors move a bit more in the fibers of cold press paper. Hot press paper is more expensive, at least generally, so that can be something to keep in mind. I have never used that, mostly because of the expense issue. Plus, I find cold press works well for what I do. Hope this helps! :)

    Not sure if they came out just after you did this video, but Arteza does make real brush replacement pens - they come in a pack of 4 for less than $7 arteza.com/products/arteza-real-brush-pens
