Between Mark Murray's forced retirement and the trial BNE/SYD game, Alfie was even considered a borderline choice as the best halfback among BRL teams. Geoff Bagnall played his tail off for Norths and was definitely a solid prospect. But Alfie was immediately transformed by playing Origin. He was a good halfback for the Jets, but as soon as he started playing for the Maroons, it was as if all the promise he showed at club level instantly came out. And once the promise was realised, he maintained at that level.

Since this season i was a Victorian convert loved league ever since and there is world cups and internationals but State Of Orgin is still the best pure form of the game I have always wanted to see a state of orgin style ( Island Of Orgin ) played in NZ
I was eight years old. I remember that first game, after the try that Mick Stone awarded. (which turned out to be the right decision) All of Lang Park started calling out "BULLSHIT ........BULLSHIT ........BULLSHIT" collecting cans in the outer. Them were the days :) Thankyou Great doco mate.
I hear you bro that's why they need to bring back the Kangaroos and Lions tours so the English clubs and teams can compete and more English Players can play NRL,QRL and NSWRL.
This was before my time I always wondered why Wally is The King Langer revered. I knew they were great players but wow It's almost a completely different game Just how intense these old Origin matches were Thank you for showing me this. I grew up watching Agros cartoon connection Who can forget his Golden Statue of King Wally
And the Games Alf wasn't able to play between 1987-2002,QLD produced just good a Half backs in Mick Hagan, Adrian Lam and Paul Green, but I must admit that I would of Given Laurie Spina ago with Adrian Lam in that Super League split
The Great Brett Kenny played 12 games at 5/8 against the Great Wally, for 8 wins and 4 losses. In the centres he played 4 times for 4 losses. That is why NSW lost the decider.
Gordon Langton is a tremendous loss to rugby league. I often wonder what would have been if he’d have gone on with it, and perhaps paired with Steve Renouf in the centres at the broncos.
In 120 SOOrigin games played, NSW have used 75 more players than QLD. - NSW -292 vs QLD - 217. I reckon that these numbers have a lot to do with QLD's success over the 40 year period. In saying that , it still shows how close this great concept has been, with QLD winning 64 games to NSW winning 54 games, with 2 draws. Just something I find interesting with the approach of both States......
Yes Lewis, I agree mate. Allan Langer should definitely be an immortal. His career and achievements rank with the very best. I won't knock Andrew Johns, as he also was an extremely gifted and accomplished Footballer, however if I could start a team from scratch I would certainly choose Langer as my Halfback ahead of Johns primarily because you know he will play in every game and be consistent and have a great attitude. Johns was very injury prone and missed a huge amount of games in his prime. You just couldn't rely on him week to week like you could Alfie.
I agree Alf is a true Legend of the game and has done far more then Joey has in the game, even Joey's team mate cheif Harrigan said the only bloke you couldn't read on the field was Alf Langer he was even choosen as Australian Half back ahead of the Joey when his form wasn't the best.
I think Joey got the nod ahead of Alf because Joey transformed the way half-backs play. He created the modern day half-back. However, Alf was in my opinion the more consistent of the two. So I agree mate, Alf should be an immortal.
The music was great - it adds to the fact that you're watching something grand and magnificent from 30 years ago. You can still hear the calls and commentaries... so please stop knocking.
Maton View you miss the point of my statement, I have nothing against the music but it overpowers the video the football is why people watch they / we don’t want to be deafened by, so called, background music.
A Wiganer - actually by your reasoning, you do have something against the music, by it being there. I disagree with you because I think the music does add an additional effect. You know purists will say, “Why would you even need commentary? Wouldn’t you rather hear the pure hits and contacts of the players?” So in reality commentary, is like music in that it adds another effect to action that you’re watching.
Thanks mate! Appreciate the positive comment. Yep Laurie Spina was an excellent player and would have done a top job, but it's fair to say the Maroons did well going with Alfie👍🏻🏉

Always see him at Paddington Central, which is just up the road from suncorp stadium, fka Lang Park, usually he's with Kevin Walters.
This tier of competition is one of the main reasons that Great Britain/England seldom trouble Australia.
I hear you bro that's why they need to bring back the Kangaroos and Lions tours so the English clubs and teams can compete and more English Players can play NRL,QRL and NSWRL.
Had Tommy as a cabbie home one night from the Valley.
He would have made a great Queenslander.
Legend the best number 7 ever 💯
This was before my time
I always wondered why Wally is The King
Langer revered. I knew they were great players but wow
It's almost a completely different game
Just how intense these old Origin matches were
Thank you for showing me this.
I grew up watching Agros cartoon connection
Who can forget his Golden Statue of King Wally
they changed tackling laws because of the bloke, absolute legend
hows that mate?
@@DinkyDiTruBlu langer would use his legs mid tackle to trip the larger players, similar to judo technique
ALF tackles ET !!! what a moment !!!
Just discovered Langer and I share a birthday. Alas, I'm 16 years older.
Had no idea that states hated each other so much and the rival clubs did to.
Langer is a a funny bloke when his mates reference his height he gets shorter every year got me in stitches
Grew up with these legends both maroons and blues footy just ain't the same 😒
And the Games Alf wasn't able to play between 1987-2002,QLD produced just good a Half backs in Mick Hagan, Adrian Lam and Paul Green, but I must admit that I would of Given Laurie Spina ago with Adrian Lam in that Super League split
Michael O'Connor was the difference in a lot of games
Unfortunately today’s SOO competition only a mere shadow of what the teams were like back then.
GOAT
The Great Brett Kenny played 12 games at 5/8 against the Great Wally, for 8 wins and 4 losses. In the centres he played 4 times for 4 losses. That is why NSW lost the decider.
Gordon Langton is a tremendous loss to rugby league. I often wonder what would have been if he’d have gone on with it, and perhaps paired with Steve Renouf in the centres at the broncos.
Where was this sort of passion last night??? Fuck
Still a 110% NSW Supporter.
O'Conner was the best player in a losing team...
Andrew Johns: an Immortal. Allan Langer: not an Immortal. Please explain.
Joey was the best in every aspect of the game, kick, tackle, break, read then more. Alf made tackles against forwards Joey smashed them
Lewis Winders Johns is better. Simple
WHY DO YOU NEED MUSIC DROWNING OUT THE COMMENTARY ?
Great Doco pity for Laurie Spina, seen him play he was good would have made a good Queensland player
Thanks mate! Appreciate the positive comment.
Yep Laurie Spina was an excellent player and would have done a top job, but it's fair to say the Maroons did well going with Alfie👍🏻🏉
