in 2010 I started design school and I wanted to pursue interior design/decorating. Unfortunately my university did not have an instructor, but did not tell me this until after I enrolled. I ended up starting their graphic design track, I loved the initial design classes but once we got into designing graphics, I knew it wasn't for me. I left school after two years, now I am married and have a 1 year old daughter. I have known for some time that I wanted to "go back to school" but I am a full time mom right now and how to pursue this passion while being a wife and mother and needing at least a part time job. If i can do this online course maybe I can make it work but I cannot decided wether Interior Design or decorating is a better fit for me and . Any advice?

I have a unique situation on how I am getting started in interior designing.. I have started off apprenticing for a company and I want to learn more so I can grow as a designer. Hi Kendale, congratulations on your apprenticeship! That’s a great way of getting into the industry. In fact when I was working for some London design studios I had several colleagues that started this way. I know it might not be that easy but with time try to get your hands onto several different tasks within the company - avoid getting pigeonholed into only performing the one task (for example fabric samples sourcing). Would this be a replacement for a four year college? I am currently a third year studying Civil and Environmental Engineering, so Im hoping maybe I can continue in my studies and also work on becoming an interior designer. Hi Φλωρεντια, in the majority of countries you don’t need a degree or any formal qualification to be an interior designer. Although, a lot of my current students have actually studied interior design at the university and complemented it with my courses to get the insider knowledge. But it doesn’t mean that you need a degree to become an interior designer. My former boss for example didn’t have ANY formal education and became one of the most famous designers in Britain. I’ve always been indecisive about things in life but the one thing I keep coming back to & have had a passion for for years is this, so now at 36, I’m tired of having jobs I don’t love or feel proud of. I want to be excited about what I do, & excited for life again, so with all that said , my question is.. I’m a beginner. I feel I have some natural talent but I don’t know where to start.. in 2010 I started design school and I wanted to pursue interior design/decorating. Unfortunately my university did not have an instructor, but did not tell me this until after I enrolled. I ended up starting their graphic design track, I loved the initial design classes but once we got into designing graphics, I knew it wasn't for me. I left school after two years, now I am married and have a 1 year old daughter. I have known for some time that I wanted to "go back to school" but I am a full time mom right now and how to pursue this passion while being a wife and mother and needing at least a part time job. If i can do this online course maybe I can make it work but I cannot decided wether Interior Design or decorating is a better fit for me and . Any advice?

I have a unique situation on how I am getting started in interior designing.. I have started off apprenticing for a company and I want to learn more so I can grow as a designer.

Hi Kendale, congratulations on your apprenticeship! That’s a great way of getting into the industry. In fact when I was working for some London design studios I had several colleagues that started this way. I know it might not be that easy but with time try to get your hands onto several different tasks within the company - avoid getting pigeonholed into only performing the one task (for example fabric samples sourcing).
So, learn; technical drawing, preparing presentations and Photoshop skills etc.

Would this be a replacement for a four year college? Hi Φλωρεντια, in the majority of countries you don’t need a degree or any formal qualification to be an interior designer. Although, a lot of my current students have actually studied interior design at the university and complemented it with my courses to get the insider knowledge. But it doesn’t mean that you need a degree to become an interior designer. My former boss for example didn’t have ANY formal education and became one of the most famous designers in Britain.
