Having watched this first episode, THE MEMES, THEY MAKE SO MUCH SENSE NOW Like, the experience of seeing the red head's short interaction with the main character at the end of the episode was like opening my third eye to all the memes and artwork I had seen for the past many months.
Denji is pretty much the antithesis of the typical shonen protagonist, and one of the major reasons people gravitate towards csm including me. Denji isn't some force of good, some overly kind hero of justice and a strong moral he's not on some revenge journey or to become the strongest devil hunter or the king of devils. He's the product of the world around him and the life he's lived, the bad, the worse, and the worst.
He just want to score with girls goddamnit lol, which is rare male leads even in romance shows are for some reason so terrified of intimacy when in reality that’s not the case at all.
@@RKingdom05 Kinda, but Itadori is very much a good person who cares to save any person that isn't total scumbag. Denji on the other hand saves the people he truly cares, but other than that.... nah. I think he very much embodies the "Not my problem" philosophy without swinging to either good or bad. I feel he might be a truly neutral character.
"Ripcord" - I was actually surprised that you guys did not reference the mothers heart disease after Pochita sacrificed himself to be his heart. Denji likely had the same heart disease that killed his mother (hence the coughing blood), and with Pochita's sacrifice, becoming Denji's heart also saved him from suffering the same fate as his mother.
Caleb....you do realize that human body parts are nearly just as valuable on the black market in reality today as they are being showcased as in the series, right? Lol
Ripcord! I really liked the way “dog” was used in this episode “Dog and Chainsaw.” We have Denji being called a “dog” by the yakuza and treated like dirt, just being forced to do anything. A kicked dog. Then we have the relationship between Pochita and Denji in which Pochita is Denji’s literal dog, but in a more “a dog is a (chainsaw)man’s best friend” way. A pet dog. Then at the end, when Denji is found by the devil hunters with Public Safety, he seems out of place and kind scared of his new freedom like you said. When the woman comes up and hugs him and says she’ll feed him, it almost seems like Denji is a stray dog. Really cool episode! Looking forward to more reactions and discussions!
Ripcord Tatsuki Fujimoto is a huge film buff and he loves to remind you by having two page spreads in his manga that resemble famous movie scenes/posters. The OP's director clearly payed service to that love by incorporating many famous movie scenes/shots into it. They're blink-and-you-miss-it moments and some are very hard to recognize. What's wonderful is the way these shots blend perfecly into the OP's non-movie reference shots and somehow fits right in to tone and rhythm of what the OP is going for without really feeling like references. This will also make more sense once you meet the rest of the cast. The movie references that I was able to find: Texas Chainsaw Massacre (because of course), The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, Constantine, Attack of the Killer Tomatos, Jacob's Ladder, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as well as Japanese Horror Film "Don't Look Up" and Sadako vs Kayako (basically Japn's Freddy vs Jason [AKA] The Ring vs The Grudge)
Salad is actually quite common as a breakfast side in Japan, but it's more traditional to pair with a Japanese main (traditionally, leftover fish and rice) than a Western toast and jam, like she did.
[Ripcord] The amount of observation haki you two have to somewhat grasp at the premise of the story from JUST the cover is insane. But for real, this series is insane, absolutely love the manga and tho you can’t beat the art, the animation is top quality.
Ripcord. I love how Denji immediately ask the girl to give him a hug because there could be reason 1. He really need that warm to remind him that he is still human inside or 2. This is the first time A beautiful girl walk up to him so closely and its his dream to get laid too lmao either way its amazing
Well, the translation kind of got that line wrong there, it shouldn’t be “hug me” but more along the lines of “let me hug you/fuck you” so it’s definitely the latter. Denji ain’t that sweet😂
it's the latter. Denj a simple boy with simple wants. He ain't that deep. also he probably has never been hugged before by anyone let alone a pretty girl, so seeing a pretty girl he asks the one thing he really wants right now: to be held by a pretty girl.
@@tomojohnson9348 you are absolutely right. In the original Japanese line (抱かせろ), he said "I wanna fxxk you"-ish thing so many Japanese manga readers apparently found it a bit watered-down.
(Ripcord) So glad you guys are watching this show. I won't say much to avoid any potential spoilers so here are some fun facts: The opening is actually filled with references to other movies because the author Tatsuki Fujimoto loves movies and cinema, I'm interested to see how many you guys can find. Also this is actually Denji's VA's first ever role if I remember correctly. Anyway, hope you enjoy the anime and praise Pochita. P.S: Organs are very valuable in our regular world too.
RIPCORD The price of the body parts he sold off at the start are very reflective of real life. They don't live in a world were organs are expensive. Those were roughly market rates for those parts irl. Side note, the animators get so extra on simple scenes, this show looks amazing.
[Spoiler Free] In the opening there are several references to famous films like: Big Lebowski, Pulp fiction, and so on. It’s mainly because Fujimoto (the manga creator of Chainsaw Man) is obsessed with Movies and that also reflect in how he writes stories.
Constantine, Sadako vs Kayako, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes, No country for old men, The Texas Chainsaw Ma ssacre, Once upon a time in Hollywood, Jacob's Ladder, Ghost Actress (Don't look up), Reservoir Dogs, etc...
There is really no need to tag your comment with "spoiler free" lol. You are supposed to do that for spoilers only. Explaining that the OP is full of so many references doesn't really warrant a warning since that has nothing to do with the story of CSM in and of itself.
Let's pull the ripcord to this amazing Anime adaptation, let's go! Funfact: Pochita's VA in this episode was the same as Nanachi's from Made in Abyss - Shiori Izawa. She did a great job in further endearing the cute little devil puppy to us with her adorable voice.
[ *Ripcord* ] [ *Spoiler Free* ] The OP is just absolutely brilliant. It just a lovely tribute to the manga absurd humor and Tatsuki Fujimoto (the mangaka) loves for cinema. Shingo Yamashita may known for his knack directing OP that look clean and smooth (Naruto OP13, JJK OP1-2, ROK OP2), but he clearly outdone himself here. Felt like the entire team just having fun in 90 seconds with all the movie reference and silly thing happening on the screen Also pretty surprise at how cinematic the first episode is. Almost felt like it being shot by a real camera. Denji meeting Pochita scene is just beautifully shot. Ryu Nakayama have prove himself a worthy director for this series. He gonna have quite a resume for this to be his debut series on main director chair. Edit: Oh the cinema thing gonna be a common occurrence in this series. I mean the reason why all the Public Safety people wear suit is because Fujimoto love Resevoir Dogs. Its not a Fujimoto story without a cinema scene.
Man I already love Fujimoto for his wacky ideas and wonderful characters, but I feel like I'm missing a part of the fun with all these movie references cause I'm too young for them. On the other hand, I could just watch some older movies an maybe I should
@@sunrayyourmom Here let me help you little bit with the OP movie reference list: 1. Reservoir Dogs (1992) 2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) 3. Pulp Fiction (1994) 4. Sadako vs Kayako (2016) 5. No Country for Old Men (2007) 6. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019) 7. Attack of the Killer Tomatoes (1978) 8. Don't Look Up (1996) 9. Jacob Ladder (1990) 10. Constantine (2005) 11. The Big Lebowski (1998) 12. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995) 13. Fight Club (1999) Hope that help, if you want to get on with the reference because the manga also full of it including other film not shown in OP. I myself only have watch No Country For Old Men, all Tarantino movie on the list (albeit long time ago), and Constatine. I may watch 1 or 2 on the list between episode to lift boredom from waiting to wait new episode.
Ripcord It's good that you're getting Jujutsu Kaisen vibes because the author of Chainsaw Man and JJK are big fans of each other's work and have both admitted to have been inspired by the other. Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man Author) even joked when the anime was announced, saying "wow, the studio that animated Jujutsu Kaisen and Dorohedoro is going to animate the Jujutsu-Kaisen-and-Dorohedoro-Clone Chainsaw Man? I'm excited!"
This story is great, and surprisingly deep. Real king hiding in beggar's clothes. It is also incredibly fun. You guys are gonna have a time with this one!
Ripcord So the author of Chainsaw Man loves movies and there are a ton of movie references in the opening ranging from Pulp Fiction to No Country For Old Men to The Big Lebowski to Fight Club to even The Grudge vs The Ring to, and of course, The Texas CHAINSAW Massacre. And also many more.
@@meekumanu honestly the fight club reference is the only one that seems a bit far fetched to me...the golden ball clearly is the bowling ball aki threw earlier and the big ball scene in Fight club really isnt that memorable or anything
Idk, but this bros are really impactful when it comes to their reactions and fruitful discussions. The mark when it's going emotional and fuzzy with Denji and Pochita really got me. Looking forward for more reactions bros! [RIP CORD]
(Ripcord) Fun fact: part 1 of the manga finished like 1.5 - 2 years ago now and the second part started publication in July of this year. I think it's pretty interesting to have a protagonist basically have his dream kinda come true within the first few episodes, from Makima basically promising the food related half of his dream come true at the end of this episode. By the simple nature of his dream, do you think he'll get a new dream soon that isn't just "eat well and score with a girl" and is an evolution of his simple dream? Or do you think it'll become something totally different? FYI, human organs are super valuable in our world too 😋
"A world where body parts are really valuable" My boy Denji got paid less than $700 for his nut. Granted I'm not that knowledgeable on the subject, but that doesn't seem like fair market value.
You know I get bored really easily, and I usually click the next video right after the reaction. Sometimes though you guys when you start discussing I forget to move on. I love how you guys have such good pschological analysis of the characters.
Ripcord! I looked it up and in this show, Denji's kidney was sold for about $8,000! Well, that might seem like a lot to someone poor but he got shafted, A kidney in our world could go up to $262,000 Btw, apart from Clannad and Symphogear, I have finally caught up on ALL your videos in the past 10 months! Keep up the great content! :D
I love how accurate some of the guesses were in the start of the video... It's very funny to see people trying to suppose what's the direction that the story will take from the introduction alone
Ripcord! Finally Chainsaw Man is here! The only thing more chaotic than this show would probably have to be the author. He has gone on record to say that he learned how to draw in an art class full of old people and he promised himself that if he didn't get better than them in 4 years, he would kill them. Now we get to explore the world this man created!
Ripcord Firstly, this is one of my favorite things I have read. Like ever. It's so simple yet complex at the same time. Denji is by far one of the best protagonist period because he's not here to save the world or to be the very best (like no one ever was). No, he just wants to live. I think the voice actor did a phenomenal job capturing that. His voice doesn't sound very anime (if that makes sense). Like the scream when he was getting stabbed felt like a real person screaming and that made my skin crawl. This next part is a bit of advice/warning to anyone who wants to see more about the series. Chainsaw man is a very spoiler-heavy story with its plot lines. If you guys, or anyone else here, want to learn a bit more about the story BE VERY CAREFUL. There was one TH-camr I watched who accidentally reacted to a manga trailer rather than an anime trailer. If you see any trailers that are animated manga panels, it's safer to just avoid it!
Love that everyone's focused on their theory that "body parts are really important in this world" without knowing that these bros are literally walking in blind to this anime. They literally have no context whatsoever so having them not comparing the world of CSM to real-life black market shit is fine. You can really see who understands these two well as a subscriber because you already know they will have theories far yet near to the context.
Meet our resident dog boy Denji. He’s one of the more unique shounen protagonists because he has no grand goals or dreams but is just trying to live a normal life and fulfill his own basic desires. Time to rev it up!!
Fun fact: scenes from op are references to cinematography. Its because author of chainsaw man (Tatsuki Fujimoto) is a huge a fan of cinema and other media. Movies like: Pulp Fiction, Once Upon in Hollywood, Jacob's ladder, Big Lebowsky and some more...
"This is a world were body parts are really valuable" That comment was so weird for me, do you know how much organs cost in the real world? But anyways, great video, you two are the best.
Pure chaos and sadistic fun. And part 1 is complete. As long as they stay true to the manga MAPPA has a classic on their hands. I would put the pre-hype below AOT (S3+) and above JJK.
SPOILER FREE I like how when Denji pulled on his Ripcord and screamed for the zombies to die, he didn't immediately pop into his power and destroy everybody, but instead got jumped for a small comedic break in the midst of this dark, disturbing atmosphere, which feels very fitting and deliberate
Okay, so first of all idk how to say this but I've always thought that you guys would be the best people to review/analyse a series like Chainsaw Man. The manga is absolutely amazing. At first glance, it just seems like a crazy and chaotic gorefest , which it definitely is, but it's so much more than that. The storytelling is so damn good. You never know what's gonna happen, it shocks and subverts expectations at each and every turn to the point that you simply accept that anything could happen at any point. The characters are great, the pacing is insane, the protagonist is different from anyone you've seen before, the antagonist is one of the best written I've read in recent years, even comparable to, dare I say, Johan from Monster, and NO ONE IS SAFE. But the reason I'm excited for you guys to experience this is because there's soooo much stuff below the surface that most people just never notice, which I'm sure you guys will definitely catch. There are deep hidden reasons for character motivations which at first look might seem shallow. There's symbolism, there's mythological inspiration and at the same time it's about a guy killing devils with chainsaws for arms and head lol. This is definitely gonna be a ride.
Adding onto the subversion of the "Deal with the Devil" trope, the two deals Denji makes with Pochita are far better and mutually beneficial than the exploitative deals with the yakuza and the suspicious, condescending deal with the pink-haired girl. I also really like the concept of a ripcord attached to Denji's heart. He literally has to get his heart and blood pumping for a fight.
Suspicious? Nahhhh. Look at her eyes, she's a perfectly trustworthy dommy mommy! Real talk though, Makima's questionable phrasing of it aside, it's basically the same as Gojo from JJK telling Yuji he can die now or die later. Denji, now that he's even slightly Devil, more than likely isn't allowed to keep living unless Makima can ensure he'll be kept in check. So he can either die, or let her "keep him". Like I said, questionable phrasing.
I love the period of guessing what the hell this could be without even knowing anything but the cover image of the manga. AND you had a guess that was "maybe he gets possessed" and "chainsaw demon" right next to eachother lmao! Well he doesn't *really* get possesed but... potayto potahto
I already love Denji's VA. This is the first listing he has in MAL so I don't know if he's 100% brand new or other roles just haven't been connected yet. Also, Pochita's possession deal beats the heck out of Sukuna's from JJK, and Denji and Itadori NEED to hang out together and just befriend each other in that special "technically I think I'm supposed to kill you, but do you want to go hang out at the mall" kind of way. 😁
His organs weren't sold for much lol. $8k for a kidney, $2k for an eye, and less than $700 for a testicle. From what I gather this world's economy should be largely the same as ours. Denji's life just sucked and he was too depressed to try and do much about it.
Ripcord. Well, I don't know if someone else already told you this, and Im sorry if my grammar is kinda bad, my first language isnt english hehe. Anywas, every single episode is gonna have it's own different ending, which is definetely gonna be fun for you two to check each of them out :D also the opening, it has a lot of referenced to movies. On the other hand, as a manga reader (dw i wont spoil) this episode was so wonderfully adapted, Im 100% satisfied with it, Chainsaw Man is a chaotic and stressful rollercoaster that I'm sure both of you will enjoy! Thank you so much for reacting to it, and I can't wait to see your reaction to the next episode ♡
RIPCORD I'm sure someone else has pointed this out already, but the op has a lot of scenes that are homages to classic movies (too many to list but the bowling ball one is from Big Lebowski, for example) This is really cool because a one shot by the same author, Goodbye Eri, featured movies heavily and movies in general are a vital part to Tatsuki Fujimoto's artistic style watching chainsaw man with this movie inspiration in mind would probably only serve to enhance the experience (read his one shots btw, they are INCREDIBLE)
“Ripcord” One thing I noticed that’s worth pointing out about the translation is that they say deal when in the manga I believe the word is “contract”, something that cannot be broken so long as one party holds up their end. But this episode was incredible the op might just be one of the best 90 seconds of animation, love all the little movie references. This show is one for the history books
I honestly love how Deji is such a refreshing protagonist. Hes not a good person or a bad person, hes just a normal kid who wants to get it with a girl. He doesn't care about typical shonen protagonist stuff, just some normal kid
Maybe the manga has answered this already, I’m not current or anything, but I think the Chainsaw Devil Pochita found Denji at that moment because of the incredible fear of being chopped up that the Yakuza’s words sparked in him.
[RIPCORD] Pochita's voice actress is Shiori Izawa which is also the voice for Nanachi in Made in Abyss. Also the Door in the very beginning is a very important part of the story. I'll gladly hear your theories on what could it possibly be or what could it possibly mean. Go wild, because this show is.
@@Skibbutz why though? Isn't it like vaguely explained/expressed in the finale in part 1? Spoiler: Isn't it like the revelation thing? opening of the past, like a sort the trigger for like a Dissociative Amnesia of some sort on a psychological standpoint from Denji's POV? Like what Makima said with "A child's mind is pretty interesting, everything bad can just be shut on a simple door" or something on that line. Doesn't the door kinda served like a personal protection from denji so that he can continue living his life thinking his a victim to all this and continue being ignorant and stuff? It's probably not like fully displayed but I think it was expressed very well or maybe that's just from my perspective reading it? I have re-read a couple of times and it's actually still so good seeing all these minor details from repeated dialogues from chapter to chapter and little hits about the character and deep thoughts between the lines and foreshadowing. Tatsuki Fujimoto is god tier in script making it's insane.
@@UFOinDisguise you'd think so but actually no. the door that opens to Denjis repressed memories is not the same door. The mystery door is consistantly drawn the entire series and nothing ever changes about how its drawn, from the first time it appears to the very last. The only exception to this is when Denji "opens" his door, its suddenly a completely different room and door, the door doesn't even open the right way. Then the next time the door appears, on the Makima volume cover, it's gone back to its original and consistant design. So the Denjis dad door is a completely separate door ment to mislead us from the actual mystery door which remains closed.

Tatsuki Fujimoto is a huge film buff and he loves to remind you by having two page spreads in his manga that resemble famous movie scenes/posters. The movie references that I was able to find:
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (because of course), The Big Lebowski, Pulp Fiction, No Country for Old Men, Constantine, Attack of the Killer Tomatos, Jacob's Ladder, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, as well as Japanese Horror Film "Don't Look Up" and Sadako vs Kayako (basically Japn's Freddy vs Jason [AKA] The Ring vs The Grudge)
Salad is actually quite common as a breakfast side in Japan, but it's more traditional to pair with a Japanese main (traditionally, leftover fish and rice) than a Western toast and jam, like she did.
[Ripcord]
The amount of observation haki you two have to somewhat grasp at the premise of the story from JUST the cover is insane.

So glad you guys are watching this show.
[Spoiler Free]
In the opening there are several references to famous films like: Big Lebowski, Pulp fiction, and so on.
I loved the EVA reference!
OP also referenced a now iconic panel from Goodbye Eri, his one-shot, which is the second time Chainsaw Man has referenced it.
And "Life is different for those don't read books than the one's who do" too, yeah we know already, but i didn't wanna keep naming references.
There is really no need to tag your comment with "spoiler free" lol. You are supposed to do that for spoilers only. Explaining that the OP is full of so many references doesn't really warrant a warning since that has nothing to do with the story of CSM in and of itself.
Pochita's barks and overall cuteness are to die for, Denji sure knows that.

The OP is just absolutely brilliant. Felt like the entire team just having fun in 90 seconds with all the movie reference and silly thing happening on the screen
Also pretty surprise at how cinematic the first episode is.
On the other hand, I could just watch some older movies an maybe I should
@@sunrayyourmom Here let me help you little bit with the OP movie reference list:
1. Reservoir Dogs (1992)
2. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

4. Sadako vs Kayako (2016)
5. No Country for Old Men (2007)

8. Don't Look Up (1996)

10. Constantine (2005)
11. The Big Lebowski (1998)
12. Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995)

Fun fact: part 1 of the manga finished like 1.5 - 2 years ago now and the second part started publication in July of this year.
Or do you think it'll become something totally different?

something interesting to point out: when makima hugs denji...we are VERY pointedly shown a quick shot of her blank, staring eyes.
Denji: you can have my body after i die.

Ripcord
Firstly, this is one of my favorite things I have read.
Selling body parts on the black market actually pays better than what Denji is selling it for.
HELL YEAH,THE FUTURE IS AWESOME!!!
"That's the world where body parts are pretty valuable" -so like real world I would say :P
Pure chaos and sadistic fun. And part 1 is complete. As long as they stay true to the manga MAPPA has a classic on their hands. I would put the pre-hype below AOT (S3+) and above JJK.

@@sarafontanini7051 ikr
Welcome to the crazy chaotic world of Tatsumaki Fujimoto"s works
“And the chainsaw one will return” is surprisingly close lmaooo
The Rumbling earworm goes out, Kick Back earworm goes in.

I'm sure someone else has pointed this out already, but the op has a lot of scenes that are homages to classic movies (too many to list but the bowling ball one is from Big Lebowski, for example)
This is really cool because a one shot by the same author, Goodbye Eri, featured movies heavily and movies in general are a vital part to Tatsuki Fujimoto's artistic style
watching chainsaw man with this movie inspiration in mind would probably only serve to enhance the experience (read his one shots btw, they are INCREDIBLE)
Came here right after watching the episode myself and I truely believe this is the most impressive first episode of a show I've ever seen!
“Ripcord”
One thing I noticed that’s worth pointing out about the translation is that they say deal when in the manga I believe the word is “contract”, something that cannot be broken so long as one party holds up their end.
My notifications weren't on for some reason and I completely missed this upload! I'm so excited for these upcoming reactions omg

Go wild, because this show is.
Not even manga readers know what's behind the door at this point
@@Skibbutz why though? Isn't it like vaguely explained/expressed in the finale in part 1?
Spoiler:
Isn't it like the revelation thing? opening of the past, like a sort the trigger for like a Dissociative Amnesia of some sort on a psychological standpoint from Denji's POV?
