Muse was one of the most iconic bands of the 2000s and has a legacy in rock music that’s still going strong today. They’ve released high charting hits, boundary pushing anthems and dystopian lyrics that have influenced millions of fans world-wide. Hip-hop replaced rock music as the go-to genre sometime during the mid 2000s, and with it’s increasing popularity, some rock bands struggled to keep up with the trends. Muse on the other hand still have a raving fanbase even today in 2020. But a lot of fans turned on them during the 2010s. Why? In this video i’ll explore the band’s early rise to fame, as well as answering this question. What happened to Muse? In this video we'll find out.

I think it's hilarious how rock bands get blasted for:
A) Changing their sound over the course of their career
B) Not changing their sound over the course of their career
Lesser of 2 evils
I think it's more like
A) Changing their sound over the course of their career
, but not doing it right
B) Not changing their sound over the course of their career, falling in monotony
They got way too simple imo. I like thoughtful changes, they look like sell outs now
It's always a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. AFI is a huge example of this. They started out strictly punk, then hardcore punk, then became punk rock, then gothic-horror rock/punk, then "emo", then alternative, then rock, and now they're just all over the place with experimenting in sounds. Just recently they did a blues-esque song and then returned to their older roots. They've had 10 albums, with most of their first 3 albums (and multiple EPS) sounding the same, but once you get into their fourth album (the album where the Offspring signed them to a label and they got featured in movies) they just changed every album afterward. Their fans are all over. Some are newbies who discovered their newer stuff through movies or games or, in rare cases, on tv or the radio. Some are just hardcore old-school AFI fans and don't understand why these grown adults stopped singing songs like 'I wanted to get a mohawk but mom wouldn't let me' or 'I wanna be a highscool football hero', etc. and they just get so angry about AFI "selling out". A lot of us discovered them from their 4th album through their 7th album, with the latter three actually getting awards and whatnot. We're the pretty loyal fans, with us sticking to our discovery album as "the best" but then discovering and loving everything they've done. We've even branched out and became fans of all the side-projects made by the band members, going to those concerts and ending up becoming friends with the guys online and meeting them IRL. There will always be the hardcore AFI punk fans, but most of us seem to just enjoy the ride and look forward to what they put out.

I've learned that humans always crave what is not so that explains your really appropriate summary.
I just try to be happy because of the things that we HAVE, especially with how many very active musicians dying over the last years, mainly by suicide. It was almost disgusting how all those haters of e.g. LP's Heavy or One More Light fell silent as Chester died.
So even if one doesn't like the newest Muse album - they still play the other albums live, that doesn't disappear bc of that, in fact they did a lot performances of songs not played for like more than a decade etc, why do ppl always have to complain? Go do it better then..

Guess I'm in the minority of fans who enjoy Drones and Simulation Theory. Oh well, more for the few of us I suppose.
I like some of the songs on both those albums. It would be boring if they just did their early stuff over and over.
There are some crazy good songs on drones. Psycho, Reapers, and The Handler are very powerful. Psycho came in my top 10 muse songs, how can you resist a riff like that

This was a Vegas Show and not Rock anymore. It was made with more money but less passion. So disappointment to me. I am desperate about Muse, I feel, they fade away since the Sim.Theory Drop. I still love Dom and Chris, but what the heck happend to Matt? Where has he gone? I fehlt from 1999, that the'd rule the universe - but Not in that way. :( Muse without the compassion and humor of all 3 members empowering each other with inspiration & devotion, is not the same anymore.

What happened to Muse? Nothing IMO. They are doing just fine. Saw them live during their Sim Theory tour last year and they haven't lost a step. One of the best shows I have ever seen. All of their albums take risks. That's why I like them.

Ultimately that's what matters and it's what sets them apart from mediocre bands. Crappy bands don't have longevity, unless it's designed to cater towards the musically challenged, and even then their shelf life is 2-3 albums before they vanish

I totally agree. OOS was THE album. And Lie missed one key component of what made their early stuff so great and that is Classical Music. You can't listen to the arpeggios on OOS and the harmonies and instrumentation in their early body of work and not make comparisons to classical music. Space Dementia is still one of their best songs.

OoS is a very great album. But Absolution tied with BH&R for me. Absolution was a game changer for the band and for rock in general but BH&R (after multiple listenings) showed what Matt Bellamy's genius mind is about. Appart of being a very great multi-instrumentalist, his real superpower is his capacity of composing great and unique music. He no thinks like a guitarist, he thinks like a writer. And luckily he has well oiled Dom and Chris to fully concretize his madness. But don't get me wrong, Origin is a masterpiece.
My goodness, every track is beautiful. Space Dementia, Citizen Erased, Micro Cuts, Darkshines, Futurism, how could I forget, of course, Plug In Baby. Some of my favorites from the entire album that I always come back to.
I can't believe showbiz was so poorly received ... it's such a good album, extremely underrated !
Muscle museum and sunburn are the only proper good ones from that album unintended and spiral static are OK but the others 🥴

I don't like AC/DC, but if I'm working on mechanical stuff suddenly I like AC/DC because then it feels like I'm Tony Stark. Showbiz is an album that to me feels best while driving at night, maybe if you wanna revisit that album you could try something like that.
Funny you say the two last albums did not stand great with the fans because I've been to two concerts in the simulation tour and drones and simulation theory songs were big features and got a great response from the crowd. I think they pushed away people who think they know what Muse are and what they can do (which is everything! We are just along for the ride).

The thing that frustrates me is that Bellamy is a musical genius. He can write complex guitar riffs, orchestral symphonies, beautiful piano pieces. Yet he's wasted a decade on dumbed down 80s synth pop arena rock.
I want the complexity, beauty and emotional rawness of Muse back.
They are still doing it. Go listen "kill or be killed", "blockades" and "globalist".
I don’t think the guitar riffs is complex, matt belammy actually made the best sounding simple guitar riff that everyone can play, THAT IS ALSO SOUND GOOD .

I think they probably just stopped being relevant/a mode. These days some bands/genres are a mode for a while then people forget about them. I'm not saying they're not good, it's just what happens, expecially if you don't change a lot but the music scene does. Example Arctic Monkeys tried to change and they're still relevant (for now).
The genre stopped being popularwhen new trends rose. Indie folk took over.
Strokes are still going strong, just dropped out of the charts
Both Strokes' new singles gained 3.000.000 views in a good month, respectively, which shows that there are a lot of people(me included) that are eager to hear their new material.
Muse still has this distinct Muse sound. Their dramatic aspects paired with the amazing bass playing and the creative sound ideas allows them to go on and not get boring since they always change it up. Their live shows are amazing, their concepts are fantastic and their talent is undeniable. They always change which is why it isn't new when they change it up. But they make sure to keep the Muse sound that is very distinctive.
Name one Band that is on their level or that is similar to them. One. You can't bcs Muse is truly a once in a million band

Personally I like all their albums and i like when bands are evolving, trying new sounds new thinks and not staying same all the time. Drones and Simulation theory are awsome but in a little diferent way.

I think something this video has sorta missed the point of with Muse is that they've never been a band to go for the mainstream music industry and aim for the top of the charts. I personally believe they are far more interested in putting on incredible live shows which is where they earn most of their awards and respect from. Having seen one of the shows of the Simulation Theory tour, it's very obvious the album is written in a way that a fantastic live show can be designed around it, same as the Drones album and I think this is where Muse differ from a lot of bands in the same genre (if you can put them into just one!) If they'd kept pumping out albums that were all similarly themed and sounded similar, like the first 4 do (to an extent) I don't think they'd be anywhere near as big as they are nowadays. Just my opinion :)
Duckee finally someone with a comment worth a shit here. All these people down playing this album, propping up that one...is hilarious! The fact is they use the studio to experiment and prepare songs for live shows. Their live shows are always sick and they come up with huge ideas for them. That is what I love. Live shows beat albums any day of the week. Similar to bands like Phish, their albums are good but every song they write is thought of in the context of how it will fit live. Except MUSE albums are also concept albums which make them more unique. I think they are 3 of the best musicians working together and their songs that some of these dopes say lack depth in fact show that these dopes are the ones that cannot think on the level MUSE does. Matt was reading and researching about drone technology and turned it into an amazing concept albums and even more amazing live show that takes you through real world issues and modern times. I laugh at "What happened to MUSE?, they are just putting out albums because it's their job" etc. Get a fucking clue people. Go back to listening to shitty Linken Park and 30 seconds to Mars and don't ever mention those bands in the same fucking breath as MUSE again.
I remember Matt saying they planned how the tour was going to be like before and during the album and then based all their ideas around that in the album which is what made the simulation theory tour so good. I still remember it like it was yesterday

As much as I love Origin of Symmetry and Absolution. Drones is my favorite Muse album. All of their albums are great and they don't deserve to be negatively criticized for changing their sound. And Drones, if anything, was a flashback to their old, guitar heavy, ragged, hard Rock style. So there is literally no reason to not like them anymore because they changed.
@@nickn2794 I'm one of the guys who was disgusted by almost everything after Black Holes and Revelations, but for every album I stayed open minded and listened thoroughly every single song. The actual musical structure isn't that much changed actually, but everything else just sounds fake. It's not electronics' fault (everyone seems to forget that OoS was full of electronics), but they have lost that rage they had in the early years: there are no more raw guitars and drums, the basslines are overcompressed, it all seems to be overproduced in the end. And then Matt's voice has degraded a lot, which is totally normal. I feel they just don't have very much to say and comunicate but they keep on making music because it is their job, which is understandable, but if you go back and listen to Muscle Museum or Space Dementia and compare them to the new tracks you'll understand what I'm talking about

What about Muscle Museum, Endlessly, Falling Down, Unintended, Falling Away with You, Blackout, Thoughts of a dying athiest... Nothing happened to Muse. Every album since Absolution has at least 1 radio hit, (see Madness, Mercy, Pressure), and they still are one of the biggest and most attended live acts.
This video seems like an excuse to express how you didn't enjoy their latest albums.

I'm glad you mentioned Animals. That song has such a ridiculously gorgeous main riff it's hard to overstate it, and it's also the only thing they've ever done which prominently features a 5/4 time signature.

I would have thought that Simulation Theory ‘revived’ them after Drones. I really enjoy listening to Simulation Theory. BHAR is still my favourite though.
Funny since I think that Drones was a good album and Simulation Theory the mistep, but to each their own.
Simulation is their worst album*. I could debate about any other album, but Simulation is just awful. Anyway there are two or three good songs. And it is better that much of the commercial music nowadays.
The Simulation tour is also terrible. They made a fucking circus.

It's funny how Starlight used to be so shit to me, but then I started to feel this odd love for it and it's now my favorite from BHAR, alongside Map of The Problematique, Exo-Politics, and Knights of Cydonia.
I kinda enjoyed the instrumentals of some songs in Drones, but oof, the lyrics got cringe-worthy in some songs, same is true for The Resistance's lyrics in some songs.
They never were a big/mainstream band like e.g. u2 or something BUT they have a huge fanbase all around the world and it's not getting smaller (quite the opposite actually). Their last world tour was bombastic! Arenas were packed! They still rock! 🤟 Okay, I agree that recently they were making weird stuff but when you think about it, it was always like that. They always had crazy ideas and they were not afraid to do what they wanted.
I love the 2nd law. It sounds different and interesting. Their last two albums were kinda similar so I think they will change their sound on the next album. It's still an exciting band. I'm really looking forward to hear their new stuff in the future. They're evolving and I admire that and I think many of their fans do too.
The thing i like the most about muse is that all their albums sound different. Every album has it's own feel to it and I like it. They have said that they like to release a hard rock album next and have been switching between hard rock and experimental stuff for the past 3 albums. They have something that make them different from other bands thanks to the experimentation and that's the reason i love their music.
Honestly i feel bad for them because their fanbase can be really salty when they release new songs.
I didn't reallh feel like Drones and Simulation Theory were very similar at all, but god damn, they've got some absolute bangers! Psycho, Reapers, Mercy, Pressure, The Dark Side, and Something Human are all fantastic, and barring Psycho and Reapers, all sound pretty different

Agreed, people need to re-listen those albums to really get the depth of muse. I think that their ability to go from rock, to synth, to pop etc is their greatest strength and makes me respect them even more. I think they were in advance with the time when releasing 2nd law which left a bad taste in the mouth for fans that wanted more rock style like the first albums. Heck they did drones after which is a fairly good album, the handler, reapers and psycho is the godly trio of this album. Whatever Muse will do people will critic but i don't care much, I'm just here for the ride :).
It's funny that when Unsustainable came out everybody was hating on it, fastforward to 2020 and fans are hyped AF when they play it live. I was a bit skeptical myself about The 2nd Law but that album aged so well for me.
I remember seeing Muse several times in a 1500 capacity venue in the early days. It was fantastic. Some of the best gigs I've ever seen.

Totally, the title of the video is "What Happened to Muse?" and he just talk about that for the last 1:30 minutes. I think he did his research but juts fell short on the actual explanation.

10:40 Madness from Second Law is one of the top 5 most popular songs of Muse on Spotify, played more than Supermassive Black Hole... I really disagree with the general opinion of this video about the album. It is not perfect, but it has great songs and one of the most popular of the band.
I agree. For me the real turning point was Drones. It just didn't seem like they put much effort into that one, especially lyrically. I know Matt had some personal issues going on in his life at the time, but I just couldn't connect with that album at all. Simulation Theory took some time, but it kinda grew on me. Definitely not anywhere near the level of Origin, but not bad either.
Madness is very popular outside the fanbase, that's why it is so played on Spotify
And that song for me is emblematic for the album, it is good because there's a well thought idea behind it

Like, you know what Matt is talking about in Uprising, but you can also contextualize (is that a word in English?) the song to something going on in your life, so that you can relate to it.
In Drones there's just a story and you got to follow it, there's no room for the listener's interpretation...

I actually really enjoy all of their albums even if it took a while for Simulation Theory to grow on me. Drones was actually what got me into them in my sophomore year in high school. There's no other band that has ever made me feel the way I do about Muse.

It starts off well but the second half is meh
It's not bad but it's not very inspired either. They were like: "hey people here's your album".
It sounds forced. I'm glad that on Simulation Theory you can hear that they're doing stuff for fun.
I loved Drones, it's my fav of the "modern Muse" albums. It feels like they were channeling Queen on that album, I liked the style and hard sound.
Imo, it’s their best album. So many bangers on that album. Absolution and Origins are maybe more complete, but songs like Reapers, The Handler, Dead Inside, Mercy, and Psycho drive Drones to the top for me. Drones has better/more hits, but also very lame filler, whereas the others are just kinda middle of the road solid. The highs aren’t as high, the lows aren’t as low. Although Plug In Baby is still top 5 songs of all time for me.
I personally think it would have had a better overall reception if the hits were more spread out. It sounds stupid (because it is) but a lot of people complain that the second half of the album is cancer, which it mostly is. If those cancer songs had been spread out more, as in a “hit, cancer, hit, cancer” sort of pattern, it would have more positive reviews. Personally, I don’t listen to entire albums, I listen to songs, put the songs into a playlist of other stuff I’m into, and just listen to that playlist. I have only listened to the second half of that album 2 or 3 times, whereas I’ve listened to the first half probably 100 times.
You had me until you sad "Muse 'was' one of the most iconic bands". They still are an iconic band and their last album is pretty good. The song Pressure, is exactly about the fans who never stop complaining. It's pretty obvious what Matt means by "Pressure" if you listen to the chorus.

Note,.especially if you compare it to their early masterpieces. Like New Born, Citizen Erased, etc etc The music that they were making back then, from Origin of Symmetry and Absolution as well. Is so much superior.

My favorite thing about Muse is not being able to predict their next curveball. Every release defies expectation more than the last, and every time I think they can't keep it up, but they always can.
For example, their re-recording of Origins of Symmetry. That's a knuckle-curve absolutely nobody saw coming.

I got into Muse right before The 2nd Law. I fell in love with all of their songs. The 2nd Law had some amazing playing, tones, and a raw feeling of power. I was hooked. So were all of my friends. I don't get the negativity for these guys.
Same for me. I saw them first in 2012 with 15 and I'm failing to tell what's the best album. After every album I say "Well that's the best I heard from them".

I wish more people could see how underrated of an abum Drones is. That album has some of the best music put out by Muse. The Globalist and The Handler are unreal !!

In my opinion, the 2nd Law is a masterpiece. Maybe my 2nd favorite album by them. You have to respect the awesome instrumentation!
I find it impossible to pick a fav Muse album as they are all so different and I play all of them regularly. Actually loving simulation theory and 2nd Law is a great album, Matt and the band are always innovating and experimenting, yet retain their intrinsic sound. Though there are obviously some serious subjects I think people take the lyrics and themes way too seriously, they're just having fun and you gotta write about something!

I'm 55 as of this comment. I was and still am a huge Electric Light Orchestra fan. My son liked Muse and turned me on to them in 2008. I immediately became a fan. For me, Muse is ELO on steroids. But yes, I enjoy the earlier albums slightly more than the recent ones. Great band however you look at it.
I think the trouble is that people always expect bands will stick to their same style while simultaneously bringing something new and breathtaking. And what I love about Muse is that you just never know what to expect, and even the songs I listen to that make me think "eh, not my style" - I can still see the genius in them, how competent they are. And I truly love that they bring so many different styles into their music. I also feel that many of their songs are seeds that will bloom when you least expect them to- you listen to them once or twice and think nah. Then, out of nowhever, you hear them again and they become your favorite??? I get that a lot with their music.

I got into them in 2006 and became a hugh fan. I managed to catch them live 2007 when they toured b&r. It was the greatest! I was like a super fan.. and seeing them close like that was like a fantasy. After the ressistance i started to slowly loose interest.. i didnt really get into that album.. also i hade been listning to them and seen interviews om youtube like everyday for like 4 years straight..so i was full i Guess... But during those years i was i biiig fan.. i dont know why but i feelt such a strong connection...their music made me feel more alive. Beeing a drummer doms drumming was also somthing that inspired me.. like the way he uses the toms in groovs like Stockholm syndrome.. its amazing. I really like also the personality of matt.. he's positivity and creativity is full of life and energy. I wish i hade more of his nature in me.. im sort of shy with My emotions and a bit passive. It was inspiring for me to see what matt was like but also i was wondering how u become like that?..i wanted too be as free as i Saw him. also the friendship between especially dom and matt was great to see on stage and in interviews. Chris has Always been more of a quit figurer and i can releat to that..and i can also feel bad for him.. that he was hiding in the background like that for so many years.. maybe im projecting My own feelings a Little bit on him. i think he had a drinking problem before and i think that is a symptome of the same thing that made him shy ,quite and in the background of dom.and matt.. for a while he didnt even do any interviews and left it to dom and matt. It made me sad sometimes. Anywhy i did like madness the single.. it was the first time i hade heard matt sing like that.. the end when he goes into full voice. Its so emotionell for me to hear.. he does it so well live on a show called Skavlan.. so great. now adays i think he goes straight into falsetto instead of the full voice. i hope he tries to do more full voice high notes like that. Anywhy i havent been getting into Muse for the last 7-8 years but they Will Always bee the band that i connected to the most when i was a teenager. I will Love them forever
To me Muse is like a modern day Queen. My parents grew up with Queen revolutionary music of testing the limits and combining classical and operatic music with rock. Muse did the same thing for the 2000s a lot of their songs feature classical or rock covers of classical songs. Some examples are: United States of Eurasia+Collateral Damage, Blockades, Prelude, I Belong to You, Space Dementia, Butterflies and Hurricanes, Hoodoo, Interlude, and many more.
There’s some other artists like rap, hip hop, and pop that I’ve noticed will occasionally take inspiration from classical too, but in my opinion classical just translates into rock the best. No one has done it like Queen and Muse

The thing about muse is that they’re vastly more popular from a live setting and are regarded as one of the best live bands if not the best live band in the last 20 years. A much more interesting concept to explore would be why they never really took off in the US given they have a better sound than a lot of the indie bands that got popular here. I’d be curious to figure that out.
muse has been one of my favorites for so long they will always have a special place in my heart! I would love to see some more depth into their songs or even b sides. A band that had stole my heart like muse did was Coheed and cambria,

Bands change over time to their own satisfaction. Whether you like it doesn’t really matter to them, they play what they want. Muse is still a fantastic band. I’ll still be a die hard fan :)
Muse is an amazing band, if you notice fans love albums from many different eras...something for everybody. That being said I love the old depressing gloomy MUSE but they new stuff like algorithm alternative version is amazing

Just because they haven't done well in the top lists doesn't mean they've been failing. You've said yourself that pop and hip-hop have been growing the last years. Try to find rock albums on the top lists in the last years, it's impossible.
At the same time, I don't know if you've been in a Muse concert recently. I attended one last year in a huge park in my town and it was completely packed. So I don't know what you mean with "what happened to Muse". It's still happening.

Muse is one of my 3 all time favorites next to the Beatles and Ho-Kago Tea Time. I caught their show live in Phoenix twice now. What was strange though, is I first saw them on the Drones tour, and only half the arena was full, but then when I saw them on the Simulation Theory tour, the place was near full!
They released Simulation Theory and it's still banging on repeat on my Spotify till today. That's probably their best album in the past decade.
To me, every album, every song, everything they play and create sound incredible. Different, unique, out of this world, but always with that MUSE familiarity.
I remember seeing Muse on Later with Jools Holland. They played in a little corner of the studio. they played "Hyper music". I saw them a couple more times on there as well.
The last time I saw them they were the headlining act, and had the entire studio at their disposal. I saw them as one of the holdouts of rock, keeping it alive along with Jack White, Foo Fighters, QOTSA, Arctic Monkeys, and Kaiser Chiefs.
As they added more electronics, I became less and less interested in them, along with the other bands who really jumped on the electronics bandwagon, especially Kaiser Chiefs, whose last album I listened to was unrecognizable ( to me) as a Kaiser Chiefs album. It was all dance music, missing the catchy guitar hooks and snappy lyrics.
If Muse are still going today, more power to them, they are very talented.
i am an old school Muse fan but i still buy/listen to more of their new albums.. Not a huge fan of their sound now but they are still my favorite band ever and i am glad they find their deserved success .
Saw Muse for first time in London on the Sim Theory tour. Ive seen a lot of concerts in my life (ACDC, Rush, Iron Maiden, Green Day, Kiss, etc.) but these guys were easily the best live act ever imo.

What happened to the Muse? Nothing happened. They are better than ever. There is no single bad album. They are all different and that's why I love them.
They met at high school, not college. Also, Muse are still going incredibly strong with the making of another album set to begin in early 2021. They've not really 'lost it'.
Tom Collins In England college is another name for High School. College refers to many other things, but that is likely what it meant. College(as known in the states) is known as University in England.
Of course, seeing how basic this video is, I wouldn’t be surprised if the creator got confused too.

I discovered them in 2019, and some of my favorite songs where uprising, starlight, hysteria, resistance, and some others from that timeframe. This band is my nostalgia for 2019 with a lot of interesting parts of my life that took place. I hope they get some good albums out in the future, they certainly have a unique style.

I think Drones is an amazing album, it’s personally one of my favourites, top 3 for sure; however it has a very distinctive sound and vibe that leans towards barebones guitar, drum and bass. I think this pushed fans away because they expect more from the band, such as the earlier stuff that relies a lot on synthesisers and experimental elements, as opposed to the simplicity of Drones. This definitely equates to how fun they are to play, with Psycho and The Handler being some of the most fun songs to play on any instrument out of their entire catalogue in my opinion. It’s an album that was way too underrated as despite doing something different, the same Muse level of making good songs is there as it has been in every album: they are never boring

All bands evolve and take influence from the changing times, otherwise a band would end up with numerous identical albums! No the most detailed overview of Muse, looks like the results of a quick google. They already had the bulk of Origin written when Showbiz came out, they were going to originally put Plug in Baby on the showbiz album.
