Suburban growth, government policies, racism led to 'white flight' in Newark

- Many view the 1967 riots, alternatively called a rebellion, in Newark as the city’s low point, prompting whites to flee in droves for the neighboring suburbs. But the phenomenon called white flight started much earlier and the reasons behind it were more numerous and complex than simple racism.

As a Mexican… I’ve seen some of my family members and many of my friends that have moved into black neighborhoods and battle them to get them out. They just don’t get along with them. Places like Long Beach and parts of South Cebtral LA. One in particular is Muscoy in San Bernardino CA. it used to be black…Not no more.
North east Hispanic tend to come from the Caribbean and tend to have some black blood.

Born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark. Entire family and friends lived there too. Greed killed Newark and the Blacks got screwed.

As a canadian working in NJ, I was shocked after doing a job at the Newark NJIT campus. Get off the train, nearly everyone is black. Step foot onto campus, very few blacks. The contrast was startling. I couldn't help wondering what kinds of conversations these foreign students(lots of asians there) are having with their families back home.
"So, how's school? How's the city?"
Imagine being a parent who spent some serious coin for your kid to go abroad, only to find out you sent them to a city where the murder rate is 5x the national average.

Route 21 out of Newark up the Passaic River became a race track. The noise in the valley was a nightmare. Rich areas got sound walls.

Because your wealth is directly attributable to policies and practices (I.e., slavery, redlining, predatory mortgage practices, etc.) that have disenfranchised people of color.

Slavery ended around 150 years ago and it still affects blacks today but Europeans somehow recovered from heavy wars and communism which stripped their ancestors of all their property just a few decades ago. If recovery was so hard Germany would never pick itself up after most of Berlin was bombed and millions of their people were killed.

These privileges include, but are not limited to, (1) legacy and special admissions to selective universities, (2) benefitting disproportionately from welfare, (3) benefitting disproportionately from corporate subsidies/welfare (I.e., land grants, payments to farmers), (4) benefitting from better funded public schools - which is directly tied to living in privileged communities that institutionally exclude people of color... and on and on and on. I know it’s easier to think whites are where they are because of discipline and work ethic... and thinking otherwise makes you uncomfortable... but the truth is the truth. Have you ever heard of redlining? That was a common practice that denied black people loans. It’s very difficult to create a business without a loan. White people never had anything like that done to them for decades.

I arrived to Newark from Lima, Peru when I was one. I had a great and fun childhood. I had friends of all nationalities and cultures. Some are still friends to this day. Grew up there through the 70s, 80s and after moving to NYC in 2001 due to work, I am so very excited my fiancé and I are moving back and buying a home in Newark. Such amazing growth in investments of businesses, and real estate now! It’s always still been “home” away from home since my parents and sister never left. Growing up in Newark many have no choice but to develop thick skin, and if you have the right people to nurture and educate, boy does one become resilient and learn to persevere to follow and fulfill dreams! What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger! The weak can leave or stay away! Many great people come out of this beautiful city! Some will always talk 💩about Newark until their faces are blue (usually the racist morons with a chip on their shoulder) but Newark has always been a diamond in the rough and boy is it starting to shine brightly. ! I will always love my beloved Brick City! ♥️🙏🏽♥️ Whoever says otherwise about true positive growth happening in Newark today is ignorant on facts and research. Or racist. 🤓

If you aren't rich cities suck. They were at best a transitional bridge to suburban migration because suburban life is better than urban, especially in the many rather nice suburban areas of the 1960s. Flight is right, EVERY TIME. You never make a mistake by leaving and usually gain immensely. PEOPLE LEAVE BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHAT WILL HAPPEN. Pretending it won't happen doesn't help. Even a renewed Newark is still Newark and urban areas cycle fairly quickly. The next recession won't help.
