Sending people to Rikers for NON violent crimes is absolutely ridiculous.

    • @ronlawray1563
      @ronlawray1563 3 ปีที่แล้ว +109

@Andy D.....Rikers is a jail and most jails hold those awaiting trial and/or sentencing, like most cities.
No matter the crime, you will end up there until your case is settled, one way or the other.....SO.....to say sending someone there for a non violent crime means nothing to law enforcement officials since they have no choice...
If l shoot someone and are arrested, and you get caught burglarizing a home the same day, we will both end up at Rikers...
You the burglar, feel you shouldn't be housed with a shooter, fine....don't do the CRIME.
Jeffrey Dahmer was in jail with druggies, burglars, DWI'S, car thieves and others...same goes for Ted Bundy and Charles Manson.
Inmates don't sweat what crime you're in for...they only sweat their crime.
You know the saying, "don't do the crime, if you can't do the time."

If you treat people like animals that’s how they’ll act.
Edit: Just for clarification-my original statement was a comment on the *system* itself, not a comment on how a person behaves, or what they did to get there. For some reason ppl keep saying things like “well they are animals.” Ok. That still has nothing to do w/my point. You may be an animal, you may be a saint, w/out an overhaul & renaissance of the system, there’s no chance for change. I was criticizing the system itself. It is disappointing (& a little scary) how many people can’t seem to understand that.
At the same time, it is *very* encouraging to realize there are 1.4K+ like-minded individuals that agree. You people are the ones who will change this world for the better. God bless.

      Have they committed crimes? Obviously.
Will they continue to offend? Yes. And the reason is because they’re treated like animals in a hopeless cycle of the prison industrial complex that lacks any type of positive reform.

Honestly I think it's great what he's trying to do with solitary confinement. I also understand the issues people have with it. It's a very fine line both ways. But it does make sense to try to give people hope and rehabilitation. I know what isolation does to my mental health so I can't imagine if I was someone that struggled with aggression and anger by using violence and having someone lock me up in solitary confinement with those type of thoughts and not having any kind of Hope or help. You're literally creating a more dangerous monster than they were prior. We all make our choices but when you treat someone like an animal that's what you're going to get. I'm sure I'm going to get a lot of negative feedback on what I'm saying but I'm just trying to see this from my own experiences. I've had run into with the law for different reasons. I struggled with drugs and alcohol and got arrested a few times and I witnessed firsthand what solitary confinement did to people I knew. It changes a person and darkens their minds. Best punishment or rehabilitation would be to force these guys to go to school, work or some type of program. Any thing that could give meaning and hope to life, people need a reason to wake up everyday or else they will be completely destructive.
After being on Rikers 8 months for a crime I didn't commit, I witness the people coming outta the box felt like they had nothing to lose and nothing to gain. They became even worse.
However the guys going to school, going to programs and working in the jail all behaved because they actually had something to lose.
For some people there is no hope thats true. But its a shame to see a good kid go into the box because he had to defend hisself from a bully, only to come out of the box with the "fuck the world i got nothing to lose attitude."
Some people dont like living in population and would rather be put in solitary so they dont have to do anything, they even have the meals brought to them, so they do something crazy just to get into the box and be alone in the cell all day.
I worked in the kitchen and the most successful and functional people always had stuff to do, while the guys with nothing to do were the most depressed, emotional, violent, and unpredictable.
The C.O.'s come in many different personalities, just like the inmate. However the overall attitude is "leave me the fuck alone, and Im tougher than you." I never had any issues with the inmates however I had two altercations with the guards, as this was my first time in jail and I was simply asking one of the guards information on how things work in there. Sadly most the information u need will only given to you by other inmates or a captain. The CO's are mostly there for a check, they could care less about rehabilitation and many of them try to be "cool" with the most powerful and wealthy inmates in the jail. I think some of the CO's are actually gang members.

Another thing. There is no real library on rikers. Only the law library. Those of use who were no trouble normally had many books under our bed. We would lend books out to other inmates and you can see the difference in an inmate who has books to read and one with nothing to do all day.
They need a library. Btw I was the only one from my cell block to go to the law library and when I came back up, I would be bombarded by the other inmates for information. People like mentors who can guide them in the right path.
They need more positive people to talk to them, more information of how to be a functional person, and classrooms. Because many of them are uneducated don't even know what direction Canada is from NYC.
I taught and mentored so many of them my nick name on Rikers was "Uncle Will" because everyone is called by last name in jail.
I ran into one kid who was 18 or 19 and just brought into the adult population from the adolescents. He came into the dorm wild, but the house I was living in was a "work house." We were all older more mature men with a minority of young men. This kid fell into line quickly because we didnt want our privileges taken away because he made the house "hot." We smoked, cooked and had all kinds of stuff we wasnt supposed to have (because we all worked and gained access to certain fringe benefits) and this wild ass kid woulda fucked all that so he was pulled to the side and told by the OG's of the house that they would "put him on the gate" if he didnt chill the fuck out.
He followed the lead of the rest of the house and stopped being a bad kid out of fear of getting his teeth smashed in by the entire house.
So basically, you set a reward system up, have the toughest guys gain from and get used to the reward system and they will manage the prison for u out of fear of losing all privileges. Of course this only works for most people. There are still assholes that never learn, and I witnessed one get stabbed up for making the house hot and always starting trouble.

Some of the correctional officers shouldn’t be wearing those uniforms, when I was 19 years old I was arrested for a suspended license on a cracked windshield which had it replaced. But the court clerk never removed it from the system. I was arrested during holiday weekend. I was told by the corrections officer to pick up my mattress and blankets to place on the bunk outside the cells. The officer said that I was too slow so he going to teach me a lesson by locking me up in a solitary cell for the whole four days. What made me hates the court even more was, during an arraignment I showed the judge the receipt and she asked me why am I I’m her court wasting her time. I was still in handcuffs and in Orange jail suit. I was so upset I told the female judge perhaps I enjoy watching her humiliating me. I said I wrongly jailed thrown in a solitary confinement for four days and she’s asked me what am I doing in her court room. So I told her this is how you get people in the systems a vicious cycle that drives people to go out and do bad things because of the corrupt government. I’m 50 years old now and I’m still upset and bitter about the experienced I went through. I enlisted in the US Army served 12 years with honorable discharges. Owning several businesses because I promised myself to never let another human being ruin my life again because I didn’t know the laws or the money to hire an attorney.

They DO! Only the most violent who cannot be managed in a room with others go to solitary confinement. I taught at Florida State Prison, which was all solitary because they are the worst and most violent in the state, and also at Union Correctional Inst., the non-violent who had jobs and worked on the prison farms and played basketball and came to class (29 male inmates and me). They are always separated by levels of behavior. The guys in solitary have to be. They are so out of control that they attack other inmates and staff. Often this is temporary and they can work their way back to regular prison. Some are always violent and will kill anybody they can. Emphasis everywhere is on rehab.

Some prisoners are so volatile and violent there's no way they should be with normal prisoners. Please remember, there are many people in there for NON VIOLENT crimes fighting for their lives everyday. There are extremely mentally ill people in there as well as extremely violent. And I've seen men go into solitary confinement come out as ghosts of their former selves and they were put in there for DEFENDING themselves but in prison, it doesn't matter.
It's horrible. And it's all for profit now so it's even worse.. They just pack people in there, as many as they can get in because they get money for it.

over half the people in that prison are incarcerated for non violent crimes and you people in the comments are speaking terribly, it's ridiculous y'all are talking about starving them and executing them? They're still people and i'm sure not everyone in there is a savage like what you people are assuming.
