As a sailor who lived on boats for more than 5 years I’m following your adventure with interest. Most people only stay in the dreaming phase, you are realising it, which is quite an achievement. You are doing well, don’t let negative comments discourage you, just go for it!
Comments help channel growth. good or bad. so heres my contribution to the channel that I've watched all 5 or 6 episodes of. First. this is great TH-cam entertainment. Maybe these two know what they're doing, maybe they don't, but we get to watch these two do something most people wouldn't, so sit back and enjoy the show. Cause this is gonna be good.
Hey guys, been watching since you bought this boat. There's a lot of us here that know what you are embarking on and the pitfalls ahead. Yes you bought a piece of crap and you'll hear that again and again, but it floats and (although barely) it gets from point A to point B. It also provides (which you've already experienced) that sense of adventure and freedom. So for all you are about to go through, making this old girl sea worthy and comfortable, keep in mind why you're doing it and you will get there. I do have to stress something, that point where your engine cut out was extremely dangerous, you had no way out if you didn't get that engine started again. Taking care of safety measures should be your very first priority, when you have back ups in place, let me tell you, it makes the sense of freedom that much sweeter. As your channel grows, you will find lots of good support and knowledge right here in the comment thread and from emails. Best if luck, I'll be watching.
Good advice - Maybe a Coast Guard Auxiliary safety course minimally ! But damn... they made it from Kitty hawk using google maps???? I think in the end run they are gonna be alright tho if they pulled that one off on a maiden voyage. Anyone with boats know how those go
This is the most real to honest sailing channel on the net. Love it, get the boat safe and comfortable and just go back and forth from the Chesapeake to the keys, and video the whole thing. No B.S. family drama, just boat life.
"We made a Patreon page, cause...….. Have you seen our boat?" LMAO !!! I don't care who you are, that was funny right there.. I'm gonna have to send you guys somethin. :)
Great videos keep them coming I enjoy watching both of you working together. I work at the Delaware City marina in Delaware and I know it's a distance from you but we would love to have you and your boat and you can do all the work you desire in our yard. We cater a lot to sail boats and at the very least you have to stop by once you get your boat up and running we are right off the C&D canal.
I had an Iroquois (sail number 177) in1980. It was in rather better condition than yours, and we sailed maybe 5,000 miles in two years. Down from the uk, Spain, Portugal, into the med, then back out, down to the canaries and across to the Caribbean, where we cruised up through the windward islands. We had a single 20hp outboard, which behaved well, roller furler, drifter, but no fridge, gps, water maker, or any of these modern conveniences. Sextant, towed log, compass, and paraffin lights. It was a great adventure. Damn, I miss that boat.
Wow simon, what a wonderful story you just told, I know very little about Iroquois and it is good, I was a 19 yrs old merchant marine sailing those seas in a good size old ships in 1980, not much fun but all work, but no complaints👍
Long sleeves people ... they make that fishing attire for a good reason yall! So stoked for you guys though, seriously. I'm from New Bern and want to get back down that direction - Swansboro looks nice, get a place on the water, and sail my life away. Maybe one day.
Great episode. I admire your sense of adventure and I've noticed fewer haters in the comments on this video than on your previous episodes. Keep 'em coming and we'll keep watching!
It might be worthwhile buying a trailer that you can pull the boat out on and look for a yard that you can store it at while you repair your boat. Might be cheaper in the long-term
You’re both incredible! Of course you’ve broken some serious boating rules but you’re unkillable energy and drive will pull you through. Inspiring! Don’t, I said DON’T Stop!
Love the lessons being learned - you two are meant for each other - Thanks for teaching us what attitude to display when times get tough! Best wishes to you both.
Hey you guys, this is gonna be awesome. I've quickly looked all your clips and can't wait for the next one. Enjoy it and just do it we allllllll gonna enjoy it as much as you guys do. From South Africa
I really admire your adventurous spirit ! You two are a perfect team to take on something new to you both like this rebuild. I am gonna become a Patreon subscriber...Good on you !
Hey Sailors- Have you checked out Wormley Creek Marina, Yorktown, VA, which is just north of Back River. They may allow owners to work on their own boats. Good luck, I admire your pluck and courage !
I'm really enjoying what you guys are showing. The names of the locations take me back to my misspent youth 40 years ago. I do miss living on the Atlantic Coast. Good luck on finding a decent marina. They're out there. You just keep finding the greedy ones.
Ahar! Hats off to you two. Ignore the haters. They're just people who are cranky at the world because they're envious that someone is doing something that they don't have the courage to do. I'm seven vids in and am pulling for ya's. Greetings from Oz.
This is awesome! These videos are definitely captivating. it’s definitely helping us get the motivation to move forward with selling everything and purchasing our first ever catamaran to live aboard.
Great episode, fun times, learning lots and taking us along with you. Awesome, can't wait until the next exciting installment. :), I have sailed in winds gusting to 45 knots in an open top clinker built gaff rigged cutter, makes for an exciting experience.
I do not know how current these vids are but....you can lock the outboard down to stop it from lifting(especially in reverse) You can also loosen the fuel cap knob on your fuel tanks to allow the tanks to breath, therefore stopping the vacume thats starving your engine for fuel and cutting the engine, only for it to start and run for a while longer....and problem to repeat.
Hi guys, the enormity of what you are undertaking is probably taking hold about now. A lot of people would cut their losses and look for another unsuspecting buyer, but the journey you have just undertaken may be the most rewarding of your lives. The more you learn the more you will realise how much there is to learn. Welcome to the world of boat ownership. it will either turn you way or be the most rewarding lives you could envisage. it will be a long, hard journey but if you stick with it you will become closer as a couple and strengthen you as individuals. The world will shrink to the dimensions of your boat and so will your interest. it is a potentially wonderful situation to be in as your adventure is just beginning. Enjoy and look after each other, but don't forget that everyone needs a break so often, even from paradise. good luck.
Good luck finding a marina. None of them want to allow you to work on your boat anymore on their property due to issues with insurance. I am in the midst of a project as well, and initially I did the same as you and contacted all the marinas and got a resounding NO, sometimes rudely so. Eventually I found a place that just does outdoor boat storage and they were willing to allow me to work on the boat there. Thankfully I was able to move the boat myself because where it is not is no where near the water. Good luck.
Its a bit late but welcome to MDs crazy summer weather. I think that was the same storm that produce a small tornado somewhere here. My recommendation is to get on a forum that is specific on the boat you are sailing or at least a sailing forum. With a group of people like that the info will be exactly what you will need. good luck on your travels!
You need some fenders to protect your hull from the pontoon, ask Geoff if he has any old ones around he can let you have cheap most marinas have a million of them kicking around.
You guys are so awesome, you were in my neck of the woods, passing Fort Monroe and going to Bellisle marina which is walking distance from our house. You were lucky to get a boat with no wholes in the bottom. lol.
Ay Caramba!! OMG!! Holy Shit!! You two are GREAT!! Best of luck to you! I just watched the first 5 episodes and by the third episode I needed a couple of shots and an anti anxiety pill!! THANKS for the GREAT entertainment!!
Well done guys. Just stumbled on your videos, recognized the boat and had to binge the last few videos. Pretty small world.... we met very briefly at your current marina (won't give it away as there are future episodes I'm sure). Greg introduced us, we're the family of 4 heading south in our old trawler. Left last Saturday. Maybe we'll see you guys again. Good luck. Look forward to more videos.
Hey Ryan!! That’s amazing!! What a small world indeed. It was great to meet you. I hope your trip is going well and hope to see you down there soon! Stay in touch!!
Could your engine problems be fuel starvation? Sometimes the fuel line inside the tank has a fuel screen or sock on the end and it can get varnished with old fuel and collapse on itself. Then it goes back to its normal shape in a few minutes. After looking at a closed intake, that's where I'd look next. Good luck!
First, get your outboard working properly. It can save your life and your boat. Second, make sure you have all safety equipment the US Coast Guard requires. Fines can be costly. Third, get tow boat insurance. It will pay for itself if you use it once. Good luck guys, can't wait to follow your progress.
Hey Clay! This is all such great advice! We recently found out about Sea Tow and will definitely be getting that. Time to learn about outboards now! Thanks so much for the tips and support!!
Get a trailer, get some rigging and sails. I would not worry about any paint until the structure is done. You definitely need a place to put it on the hard to work on it. Sailrite is the best for your sails, bimini, and upholstery. If the factory is still around they will be a good source for basic parts.
9to5less Been using sailrite for years. Their kits are very complete and easy to build. A bimini is a good start or maybe some cushions for the cockpit. Most times it is the simplest things that make the most impact aboard the boat.
So I’m guessing by the title of this channel you both don’t have regular jobs with time constraints and you’re doing this boat thing so you can sail off in the sunset? I don’t know much about catamarans or sailboats but Is this thing even large enough to be ocean going? I mean what are your plans? I think we get the idea but how about a Q and A video where you maybe answer some questions about what you plan on doing with this boat and where you’re planning on sailing it when you get it done? I’m really curious about if you’re just trying to make it a weekend boat or if you’re actually going to live onboard?? I mean it’s basically a gutted clean slate.
The boat was sailed from England. So it has made one ocean crossing. Simon Pearce mad a comment where he sailed one from the UK to the Caribbean and said it was well behaved.
Hey guys, just stumbled across your channel and just watched all your videos in one hit, genuinely love your content and your enthusiasm. Keep up the good work, can’t wait for the next instalment, the quality of your videos is great btw.... all the best from England 🏴
Good Job so far,at least you know what you want out of life unlike the 60% of the keyboard warriors on here with the negative comments, love the videos, cant wait to see what it looks like after shes painted and repaired
Hi guys , been watching your videos and I was wondering if you have rudders in the amas? Originally the Iroquois had external rudders on the stern. when the sugar scoops were added did the previous owners put in rudder posts and rudders? You won't be able to steer with the outboard while under sail. If you have rudders you could lock the outboard going straight ahead and steer with the rudders.
Hey Gary. Thanks for watching!! We have the rudders but they have rotted. Stashed them in the front hull. Can use them as templates and all the hardware is on them. Currently the only steering we have is from the outboard. We would have to remove the sugar scoops to put them back on and we really like those so it’s a tough decision we face.
@@9to5less It may be a tough decision but Gary is right. To sail you need rudders. Even under motor she will handle so much better with motor locked in place and you using the rudders to steer. If you are concerned with boarding your boat after swimming many people use a stair that hinges up and down. Up when sailing or motoring and down when needed. Best of luck and we who sail enjoy your adventure. Keep going.
@@9to5less You could keep the sugar scoops. Looking at the stern of your boat it looks as though the scoops are open at the front to the original stern. You could drill a hole through the steps and fiberglass in a tube to receive the rudder shafts which you would have to make. Then put tillers at the top and connect them with a rod. put in a pully system with a steering wheel and you are in business .
I am here in Hampton Roads. Most of the marinas in the area will not want to haul this "boat" without a bond when they see it. Too many have been burned by good meaning dreamers starting project and then to have reality catch up to them and forced to walk away from the boat. The Deltaville Boatyard ( on the Fishing Bay side of Deltaville) may store this boat in their yard, given that the boat does not come apart on you go up the Bay. I personally think this boat is too striped out to be bought back into useful service even if you had the skill set to do it. You have no idea of the cost in materials alone to make this "boat" sailable on the Chesapeake Bay.
Hey Neighbor! Yea I totally understand the risk to the Marina when pulling out an old multicolored boat like this and his concern is valid. It was great to have a place to stay for the night and just glad we were there when the storm hit.
@@9to5less Since the events in this video are at least 5 months old, I'm sure your storage concerns have been resolved by this point. Looking at the market for this boat if you could not afford this www.sailboatlistings.com/view/39204 . You will never afford what you have, since $12K would barely buy the standing rigging and sails for your boat. The sugar scoops transom will have to go since that is where the original rudders were mounted . Putting the rudder tubes inside the boat along with the helm rigging will be a nightmare. Anyway good luck with all of this.
Hey yall! Cool vids ! Next time y'all are in Hopewell area hit me up! I am building a boat myself from a old sailboat . Bout to put it in the water . Good luck to yall !!!
Very entertaining! Such a nice looking young lady - please stop smoking. I worked in Radiology and have watched doctors cry while they told people they were going to die of lung cancer or bladder cancer that was caused from cigarettes. I got to interact with thousands of people during my career. Smokers look 5 - 10 years older than they really are once they approach 40. Enough of that - Have fun with your adventure and never give up the dream!
Hey guys. Great channel, and I admire your courage. Couple of questions→ do you have a VHF radio, port and starboardNavigation lights and an anchor light?
Hey Dale! We are ok. Thanks for asking! Just crazy busy working really hard. I hope that tonight I can finish editing the next episode and have it uploaded tomorrow.
This motor has a spark plug? Lol in that case that’s a great idea to pick up more and change them. How often do they need to be changed? I think a 20hp long shaft 4-stroke is what we are going to look for. I don’t think the transom will support much more than that and we’ll still be very fuel efficient. Mast probably won’t go up for a while.
Not sure about your exact outboard but i'm gonna assume it has 2 spark plugs. IMO i would take them out and clean them or replace them (2-3 dollars each). I used to have issues with my ouyboard dying as it hadn't been used in 3 years. After running it for a while, an oil change and some new spark plugs it worked like new. My guess is you have dirty spark plugs, dirty oil and my guess is waterways might be clogged ( maybe it's overheating and shutting down due to thermostat). Good luck anyways!
well I thought I was nuts when I took on my yacht,31ft,,,,,but yours is away worse than mine,,,good luck in your journey, enjoy your trip so far, pete from scotland
i love your boat, too bad that here in Finland we don´t have small cats... but i am eger to see when you start working on it and what it looks like finished
That fuel tank is horrible for sucking air in rougher water. I spent 3 days in NJ because of weather just like that on that boat and the motor did the same getting into that marina
Capt!!! We could only imagine how much worse it was for you out there. Do you think this is the exact same fuel tank you were using too? Still can’t believe you owned this boat before us. So cool!!!
I don't want to start the whole mono-hull VS cat shitstorm, but with an equivalent mono you can travel lift it onto a 10 or 12K GVW trailer and do the work anywhere.
@@9to5less I don't know how far behind real time you are, but if you aren't settled yet, call every marina you can. Offer to pay in cash, shill for them etc. If you have an account on sail-net, maybe ask if anyone in that area can help you out. Good luck.
Is there water squirting out of your outboard ? That is forced through the engine to cool it, by that impeller I mentioned last video. Without it your engine is toast. I've seen these storms when driving acrooss country but never been in one. WOW ! At least the lightning, we have regular wind events lately. Next one, tomorrow, wed, no power, they will shut it off for at least three days.Short binge watch to catch uo lol .... looking forward to this adventure. Sooner you have some rigging up , you won't stand out and get comments like "$1500 dollar bond". But, makes it more complex getting under bridges. Still, probably would be good to do as long as there are substantial attachments still available on the boat. They take them out, put them in, with mast/boom on the boat regularly.
Yea we constantly checked to see if water was still coming out and luckily it always was. I think we may just keep this thing as a motor boat for now and go out and enjoy it without the giant lightning rod on top lol
I keep my boat in Pasadena MD. I also have a Catalina 30 in Deltaville VA on the hard. Basically $100 a month. I can do almost anything I want to the boat. I hope you didn't pay much for the boat. The Chesapeake is FULL of free boats of all sizes. People abandon them and marinas just want someone to take them off their hands. More times than not, they just cut them up.
I just started following you guys yesterday. Love your videos. Have you made it to Florida? I live on my boat in Boston. But I am a first time snowbird this year. Unfortunately heading home in 2 weeks. I'm building a new Solar cat soon.

I'm wishing you both the best. I'm praying for y'all. I really hope you have tow insurance.
Your really brave and a little bit crazy . Thanks for sharing your adventures. Be careful. The sea can be very unforgiving.
Thanks for tips Eric! I hear good things about Sailrite!
It's going to be so cool to see you guys get to sail this. I think it would be a fun project.
We are very excited Dan! Thanks for your support!!
Love the videos and can’t wait to see more. Keep up the good work and have fun living the dream!
I find this very interesting thank you for entertaining me lol everyone needs to start from somewhere. cheers
Good Job so far,at least you know what you want out of life unlike the 60% of the keyboard warriors on here with the negative comments, love the videos, cant wait to see what it looks like after shes painted and repaired
You may have some gunk in you fuel filter in the motor. Buy and swap it out(inexpensive and easy to do)
May soud silly but have you opened the airvents on the fuek can when you run. The fuel tank may just be vacuam locked till more air gets in.
Then put tillers at the top and connect them with a rod. put in a pully system with a steering wheel and you are in business .
excellent adventure guys
Great videos, I’m excited for you guys, what an adventure. I can’t wait to see how this turns out.
Keep going, my first boat was about that bad of shape. It taught me how to work on boats.
Awesome job.. keep up the good work. It’s completely worth it..
Efffff the Naysayers. You guys got the boat and each other. Rome wasn’t built in a day. That Harbormaster was a Choad.
It takes true dedication for the both of you!!!!!!!
Hey yall! Cool vids ! Next time y'all are in Hopewell area hit me up! I am building a boat myself from a old sailboat . Bout to put it in the water . Good luck to yall !!!
Hey Irvin! Will do!! Good luck with your boat! Sounds fun!!
@@klyvemurray I don't believe any doctor crying while telling someone about not smoking, period.
Smoke Weed instead.
hey tell Jess not to jump of the stern while adrift, you need a rope out there, the boat can drift real fast in current and wind, becarefull yo
Hey guys. Great channel, and I admire your courage. Couple of questions→ do you have a VHF radio, port and starboardNavigation lights and an anchor light?
Narrator: They don't.
Jeff must be a cool dude. Following with interest. Regards from Denmark.
Ps : you need a camera with a wind dampened mic.
haha.... you guys are about like i was when i first started out many years ago.
Your giving the old las a new life i can promise it will pay you back with amazing memories. Good luck check the fuel lines and the carb
Thanks for the tips and support. I definitely need to learn about outboard motors quickly.
@@9to5less nt much to it im preety sure its your fuel supply
I keep coming back for more videos...are you two OK? did you achieve success? love your videos...keep them coming pls.
Hey Dale! We are ok. Thanks for asking! Just crazy busy working really hard. I hope that tonight I can finish editing the next episode and have it uploaded tomorrow.
@@9to5less cool..really looking forward to it...thx for responding so quickly. have a wonderful holiday.
You too!!
Love to see your budget boat made to James river. You gays showing the America Pioneers spirit, Great!
Always have a few extra spark plugs just in case! Anyways, are you thinking of putting the mast up or upgrading to a 30-40hp outboard?
Thank you! I didn’t even know it had spark plugs. I should pick up a few extras too. Thanks!
If you haven’t already found a place, there are some good DIY boatyards in Deltaville.
well I thought I was nuts when I took on my yacht,31ft,,,,,but yours is away worse than mine,,,good luck in your journey, enjoy your trip so far, pete from scotland
i love your boat, too bad that here in Finland we don´t have small cats... but i am eger to see when you start working on it and what it looks like finished
So cool!!!
No charts, no clue, what could go wrong?
Depth, bilge, paddle???
1 foot, yep, nope.. couldn’t find paddles long enough lol
Welcome to the wonderful world of marinas. Some marinas you can only walk down and get on your boat. They want to charge you for everything else.
Keep up the good work!!
I don't want to start the whole mono-hull VS cat shitstorm, but with an equivalent mono you can travel lift it onto a 10 or 12K GVW trailer and do the work anywhere.
Yea there are definitely pros and cons to both. Guess we'll just roll with this one for now though.
@@9to5less I don't know how far behind real time you are, but if you aren't settled yet, call every marina you can. Offer to pay in cash, shill for them etc. If you have an account on sail-net, maybe ask if anyone in that area can help you out. Good luck.
I really hope that you guys find a marina that is inexpensive and willing to help. Good luck guys
Thanks Chris! It looks like things are gonna work out!!
You are the coolest most layedback couple ever it's fun watching you
