Take the 60 days at the boat yard, do the below the water line stuff paint, seal, patch, new thru hulls and back in the water to finish refit...

Hate to break it to you, but you're not gonna be able to do much in 60 days unless you can find a barn or someplace indoors at the marina. Barrier coating, epoxy resin, bottom paint, fairing compound ect all need certain temps in order to cure properly. That is 65* and higher unfortunately. With dew, rain, frost, snow ect in VA - you're not gonna get many windows of opportunity. I'm not too far north of you and I don't forsee many/any more days to do wet-work. Shoulda gone south!

This has been a fun watch!
I see a few negative comments but all I can say is that you don't learn by sitting at home!
You did what you had to do and personally I'm proud you seem to have pulled it off so far.
Brings back lots of memories about finding a derelict and having fun with it!
I have a Catalina 25 swing keel I'm working on getting to Deltaville from the Richmond area but always wanted a Catamaran!
On your sixty day time limit, spend it all on getting the hulls beefed up and waterproof. (I see lots of fiberglass in your immediate future. Lol!)
The rest can be done tied to a dock, moored or even anchored provided you can conjure up a decent generator for power tools when and if needed.
Good luck on the project! I've subscribed to see what happens next!

Kelvin Rees (UK) I watch a number of sailing youtube videos but this is one of a kind and has captured my attention. I have to question the wisdom of your purchase, it's certainly going to need a lot of work/tlc but I have to admire your amateur enthusiasm and spirit of adventure. You certainly have been lucky on your maiden voyage. Still the boat floats and the motor works, so that's a good start. Make the most of all the positive and valuable comments that have been made and enjoy your adventures. I shall watch with keen interest on how you get on. KR

You remind me of an old friend who bought his first sailboat around 1980. A little 24' hunter that he outfitted with a sail made from an old car cover. The pocket for the rear view mirror flapping in the breeze! Makes me laugh just thinking about it almost 40 years later. He would sail that boat to Catalina Island, taking on water the whole time. Defo take the 60 days, do everything exterior. Patch, paint and sort every single bit of rust. Once your 60 days is you'll have a solid boat with out the stress of water coming in.
You've still got a motor that seems to be working perfectly fine so far so the mast and all that can wait if need be.
You can do the interior while sailing or docked up at different locations and build that up over time.
Same sort of thing happened to me but with my camper I recently bought. 1990 express, old, not the biggest and abit of a project. But I love it. I recently got offered a space in a workshop for 2 weeks which is coming to an end and I've spent every night sorting all the rust, paint, cleaning up the exterior and it's now solid and looks amazing 😎

I had the exact same 1976 Cherokee MkII for several years in SanFran Bay. Great boat and it help up again the Bay's famous "SLOT".
I built a helm and put a steering wheel on it for the twin rudders - I put the electric start 4 cycle Honda in a fixed position. It was a LOT easier to handle than the set-up you have.
I moved to Phoenix so I sold it to a guy who who then took it to Hawaii. With some modifications I am sure it is a great boat to run up on the beach in Hawaii.
You have a VERY LONG way to go to get it functional as a sailing boat.
    Good luck.

For starters, for about $25 you could buy the ASA 101 book, Sailing Made Easy that covers ALL the basics ... it is a steep learning curve. Actually, I'd like to find a boat just like another TH-cam channel has called Onboard Lifestyle. If you go to their channel, they built there boat from the condition yours is in and did an absolut increadable job. They show just about every aspect of the build and how to do it for the most part. Used to be able to get it as a special order from West. I have turned a number of old boats into show pieces using cream colored fabric and contact cement.

That's very interesting! I was actually wondering if something like that existed. Kinda like how cars are getting wrapped in vinyl now.

@@9to5less I made a typo. The company is Redrum, nor Rerum. Go to Westmarine.com. and type redrum into the search window. A number of different fabrics and adhesives will pop up. Many West Marine stores have fabric catalogs so you can get a good idea of weight, padding, texture, etc. I have used Redrum fabrics on horizontal and vertical surfaces to cover many unsightly defects. I think I used their Seaquest Vinyl but do not recall for certain. I used it 6 years ago to replace a headliner in a charter catamaran and it looks like new today. Have never had any adhesion issues just using simple contact cement from Lowes. Did you look at the Iroquois for sale in St Augustine?

Hey, while your in a place where you might have access to boat parts, get some impellers for the outboard. They are located in the bottom of the outboard. They suck water into it for cooling. All marine engines have them and they are replaced regularly, made of rubbery stuff, so can degrade with time and use. Extremely common repair but without a good impeller your engine will overheat and be gone. Look into zincs very soon, some are actually in the outboard, they should be mounted on the outside of the boat for salt water. Guessing you don't have the two marine motors that are usually installed in the boat ? If you do, let me know about them please. Also, ask the people in the marina and people who get around if there are sunken things, boats mostly, in the waterways you are going to travel down, one boat hit one in a video , had no markers.

    • @9to5less
      @9to5less  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Yea those sunken unmarked boats are scary. That’s a great idea about some impellers. There were originally rudders on the back of the hulls instead of motors but someone put sugar scoops on this one and we are really liking them!

Hey guys, Great videos! Can't wait to see the refit.
While you're out sand the bottom and let it dry for a week or so before putting a barrier coat on it. If you can get your hands on a moisture meter even better, It was built with polyester resin and that stuff sucks in water like a sponge. Also I'd do the decks when you have somewhere else to stay because you're going to need to lay up fiberglass on the underside of the decks and you don't want to be staying on the boat when you do that.
I know you've had a million offers of advice but I'd like to offer mine too. Sailors are one big family and we're always happy to help each other out. I'd recommend joining www.cruisersforum.com and www.boatdesign.net if you haven't already, they're free and you'll be able to get lots of great advice and technical support.
Also I'd check out Saillife here on TH-cam. He's restoring a 1983 Warrior and completely gutted it and documented the last 3+ years, so he has a lot of good videos.

Yeah, the shutter button on smartphones is an easy one to miss. We've had our phones since December 2016 and my parents didn't know about the shutter button until a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly, we do have a phone case. Oh, and our Sony does a half press for autofocus too, so pretty much just a camera. In fact, we have a digital camera that we bought a few years before the smart phones which is 14.1 megapixels and the phones are 16 MP, so there wasn't much point in upgrading from a film camera; we should have just waited for the smartphones.

It seems rather simple to me. You repair all of the hull "damage" first which could take most of that time then it goes back in water for you to do the interior repair...But that depends on how extensive the interior job is and whether or not it needs to be level sooo..Hmmm
