    Good video, for me this is still heavier and larger than I'd like to have for this focal length. I recall in the film days, a solid 50mm f1.4 was at least a third the size of this Sigma lens. Yes, I know AF motors, etc... But I like the focal length and would love to have a fast 50 that compact. I know this Sigma is solid optically but it would sit at home for me unless I had a specific shoot for it. I want a 50mm that I won't hesitate to keep with me. So will wait on the upcoming Sony 50mm f1.4 and Sigma 50mm f2, and whatever else is introduced in the next month.

    This seems like a nice lens, but I think I’ll cross my fingers and hope we see a somewhat smaller f/1.4 in the near future. Maybe something with a 67mm filter thread.

    Too many 50mm lenses out there for Sony. Sony APS-C line needs a compact quality 23mm f2 (35mm equiv) and 18mm f2 (28mm equiv). Something to rival lenses from the Leica CL and fujifilm lenses.

    • @harrison00xXx
      @harrison00xXx ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Optically we were already pretty perfect with Canons FD 50 1.4 except for heavy CA and not really sharp in the corners.
      The issue are a ton of correction elements to make the lenses sharper in the corners and remove CA entirely if possible, but i dont see the real issue in size/weight, the biggest issue these modern lenses create with the obsession of corner sharpness is the missing 3d pop, they all just look flat and boring, unlike many older lenses with its charme/style… who cares about perfect corner sharpness when the final image looks flat and boring?
      I see it less of an issue with big tele lenses for example, especially in wildlife sometimes the subject is in the corner, so i WISH perfect corner sharpness but in general photography, especially portraits or anything intentionally out of focus - modern, highly corrected lenses do more harm than good (in size, weight, price and missing 3d pop)

    • @marcusoutdoors4999
      @marcusoutdoors4999 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I must admit I prefer vintage lenses and Voigtlander lenses for character.
      However a really good small light perfect AF lens would be great for when technical perfection is order of the day. This is what led me down the path of two systems, one MF and one that does both AF and manual focus.
      Best shot of last year was with an old 44M that cost me £30

    • @DrWNoLs
      @DrWNoLs ปีที่แล้ว

      @@harrison00xXx The Sigma 40mm F1.4 is optically perfect, yet it has the best 3d pop I've ever seen. I dont think low quality vintage lenses lead to 3d pop. The real problem is many uninspired shooters use perfect lenses. But a perfect lens can look vintage, while a vintage lens cant look perfect.

      Here you go: th-cam.com/video/y9YSUsa0Scs/w-d-xo.html ! I couldn't mention the Sony model in the Sigma lens video as it was still under embargo when I published, but I tested them side by side, so included comparisons in my Sony video a couple of weeks later!

  • @borlach321
    @borlach321 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I have always struggled to warm up to Sigma lenses. There is always a catch. If you own a Sony a7RV, you can clearly afford Sony G-Master glass-which comes with focus breathing compensation, among other things. Why would you settle for the flaws on this lens, or any other 3rd party lens, at that level? The focus breathing and chromatic aberration are a deal breaker for me. Stick with Sony glass, assuming you are a Sony user.

    • @cameralabs
      @cameralabs  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Remember there are many lower priced bodies from Sony too, for which third party lenses might make more sense to their owners. Things like the A7 III, A7c etc. But yes, if you have an A1 or A9 III, then you will need their lenses to make the most of the system. Sigma is targeting owners on a lower budget.

  • @firpofutbol
    @firpofutbol ปีที่แล้ว

    For me bokeh quality is very important. As much as I'd like to pull the trigger on Sigma due to their excellent sharpness, build quality, a reasonable pricing... Sigma's bokeh never convinces me. The contrast and sharp edges of out of focus elements especially on busy backgrounds are deal breakers. By contrast, the bokeh on Canon, Sony, and Tamron is really pleasing to my eyes. A very subjective thing. If you're into Sigma lenses this is a great option. Wish Tamron offered something similar. For now looks like I have to (painfully to my wallet) go with the Sony GM.

  • @scottfineshriber5051
    @scottfineshriber5051 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great review, as always. Dear Canon, I understand you want to sell lenses with your bodies, but wouldn’t the next best thing be selling bodies and no lenses, rather than selling nothing at all? I might buy an R7, or even an R6, but I can’t also buy your expensive lenses. The S5II looks pretty damn good…hmmm. 🤨
