Great review Sir! Sounds like the XT50 is a great option for photographers who want a smaller, lighter camera with the same image quality as the XT5. The new film simulation dial is a nice touch too
I'm happy because i can still stick with my x-t30 without any fomo. I'll patiently wait fir an x-t60 or a firmware update that makes that film dial into a customisable one 😅 I still have to get used to the round shape of it (it reminds me a bit of the x-e3) but I don't know, 40 mpx maybe is too much for my vintage lenses
Wow, Gordon. You have been very busy lately. Although I have no interest in buying APS-C cameras, I like watching your reviews. Thanks for your hard work.
You're welcome! It has been a busy time!
Excellent video 😊!
Thanks!
It seems like Fuji have been spooked by the explosion of the X100 cameras and are completely reconfiguring the X series in response to that market, leading to strange conflicting decisions. The T50 is seemingly posited as a X100VI alternative, an attractive capable travel cam/accessory for enthusiasts (instead of an entry level tool). But why the 40MP sensor then? Couldn’t they keep it at 26MP and have the nicer EVF?
The GFX cameras (while still being quite expensive) retain their value for money, which the X cameras are steadily losing.
Well done, best review of X-T50 on youtube.
Thankyou!
The best reviewer out there, thanks Gordon 👍👍
Thankyou!
he is really really good :)

@@cameralabs my pleasure, have been a subscriber for a long time and will continue to be one for a long time :)
wow, it seems new camera models being baked faster than smartphone iterations ,nice
So the dial only changes the film simulation? Is there any ability to save any settings like shadows/colour chrome/white balance adjustments etc? If not that is a huge missed opportunity to save custom recipes directly on the dial.
No, only the film sims
I like this camera, will fit nicely in my hiking pack!
Hello. Excellent video review, as usual.
Owner of a X-T20. So still comparing to it.
Much better performance and ergonomics but I'd have liked
1) a fixture for an interchangeable eyecup. I added a rubber eyecup to my X-T20 but it's fixed on the hot shoe, so the flash unit becomes unavailable
2) return of a d-pad. None = 4 less customizable buttons
3) customizable film sim dial, please: one dial dedicated to film sims REALLY???
With the new 16-50, 1899€. Launch price but IMHO somethig like 10% less would seem more "reasonable". Maybe fear of it cannibalizing the X-T5 sales if cheaper?
I'm sure it will go down over time, but at launch the XT5 is rather close
It seems to me that 5th gen Fuji sensor has more punchier colors versus previous one more muted. Am I correct?
X T30ii rebadge is what it seems like. I liked that camera and this one is way better. Love the new kit lens
Can you please compare with X-S20?
Give more importance to Autofous accuracy and speed.
please upvote this comment so Gordon can see it!
I answer all comments! I'd need them side by side, but since they share the same processor, I suspect they would have v similar AF. Also see my XS20 review
For the pricing of the X-T50, go with the X-S20. Same processor, same Ibis, nicer grip.
26MP is more than enough. Reala Ace will also be released for X-S20
Is the top plate mostly magnesium alloy like X-T30?
Seems almost perfect to me but I’m not sure I could deal with a £1k camera with no weather sealing in UK weather. I’m not using it in a bag so that rules out using it most of the year in the north
Great tech in such a small body but over priced. Should be around the £1000 mark. XT5 is far better value especially at current discounts. Lovely review as usual
maybe since Fujifilm added 40MP sensor with IBIS, and some bells and whistles from X-T5
Only added about $200 to x100 vi which upgraded to same sensor and processor and IBIS. $500 increase is ridiculous.
@@davidcompton4885Maybe Fuji wanted to become Leica in the future
I love my XT30 except for the Q button placement lol. Glad they fixed it this time.
lol i hate it too that's why i mapped the Q button to be electronic level so i can stay in a shooting mode if i accidentally pressed it, and mapped AEL to the quick menu
Nothing can beat my XT3
Hi for traveling do you suggest going with the A6700 or fuji XS20? i'm scared of the autofocus performance and handheld video stabilization with the XS20 because i will be solo and filming and taking picture myself, i'm not professional this is only for travel and memories
i will use it with sigma 18 50
Have you watched my reviews of each camera?
@@cameralabs yes but it's hard to compare both when they are not in the same scene or conditions
i miss your Seagull in Flight Autofocus test.
You are the ONLY one on youtube doing a real AF test.
I need a long lens for that and I only had the 16-50, so not ideal for wildlife!
Is the x-t50 capable of digital zoom crop like the x100vi from 35mm -50-70 (ff equivalent)
Better, I think, to crop in post for a better outcome. Digital crop discards outside pixels, you can do the same thing in your computer with the aditional flexibility of choosing which pixels to discard.
@@oneeyedphotographer
Shoot jpeg+raw and have the benefit of both.
Does this use the same batteries as any other camera in the Fuji lineup? The Fuji GFX100 uses the same as Fuji XT-5 - Thanks
Just like the one from Xt3 xt20 xt30
What the reply said! If you search for the battery type you'll see it used in quite a few others.
@@ctrlisme Cool thanks
@@cameralabs Splendid
I know the Film Simulation Dial is stock. My question is if you can store custom recipes in the X-T50?
I'm not sure, I'll try to find out for sure
@@cameralabs
Of course you can store custom recipes in slots as before! I think you meant you can't store them on the dial. 🙂
The storing of custom recipes remains the same. You have to turn the film simulation dial to C to use the custom recipe slots as before.
Is the lack of the hybrid viewfinder like the X100VI a big deal?
Not for me as I never use it.
The OVF on my X100T ended up never being used. The lens is partially seen in the view, with lens hood it is worse.
A serious and less expensive replacement for the overpopular X100vi.
It seems to me that colors on new 5th gen sensor are punchier and more vivid compared to previous one with more flat and muted colors. Am I correct?
I haven't noticed much change, it may be the film sims people are using to demo or review
Did fuji skip the xt40? Yes they did! - this is the camera i was looking for. I got the xt30ii a year ago, Limited but compact and a capable camera when i do t want to lug my r5 with me…
I think i know what will be under my cmas tree :)
Hi Gordon. Adjusted for inflation since release XT 30 body only £1159. Which puts the cost of living crisis into perspective.
So the increase in price for the 50 isn’t as steep an increase as it seems. For which you get IBIS, 40 mp and the latest processor.
yes, that's right!
These are made in China, not Japan. They cost next to nothing to make. That’s why Fujis profits are way up, people overpaying for cameras like this. It should be around $900-$1k.
My X-T20 leaves this thing for dust. The X-T20 gives me rapid one touch access to a range of functions via the D-Pad (film sims, recipes, ISO, focus point) and the drive dial (Bracketing, CL, CH), as well as stock stuff via fn buttons (SS, Aperture, Exposure Comp). Without the drive dial, D-Pad and ability to customise the film sim dial for recipes, I lose most of this one-touch functionality.
Meanwhile influencers masquerading as reviewers are wetting themselves over an unnecessary increase in megapixels. While studiously ignoring the significant reduction in functionality for enthusiastic JPEG shooters such as myself, who Fuji have kicked in the nuts and clearly have abandoned as a target customer group. And we are expected to swallow the lie that this is progress, whilst paying through the nose for the ‘privilege’.
Influencers masquerading as reviewers? Maybe you meant smartphone users? Or maybe... Sony users?
To me the film simulation dial is kind of a wasted dial. Leaving drive mode on that dial would get more use
I think that depends on the owner. I thought it might be an issue for me, but it wasn't
It would have been easier to overlook if they had made the dial customisable and maybe even blank as is the case on the XS10...oh well!
Owning both X-T10 and X-T20, as well as X-T1, I can honestly say I have never used the drive dials. I am more likely to use the film simulation dial even if it is a bit crippled, but would have much preferred it being an ISO dial. For me it is a small ergonomic improvement, but not one worth worrying about.
@@richardhale9664 Yes, but this move is squarely aimed at jpeg shooters who like to use film sims...but to RAW shooters it is a backward step when the rest of this camer is excellent. The film sims are great for those who use them, but Fuji should have left the dial alone and coninue with the access to sims via the menu. It wouldn't be so bad if they left the dial blank (as wit the XS10) and made it customisable (again as it is on the XS10)
@@NJM1948
You don't hide the Unique Selling Point of your cameras in a menu so I do get the dial, just not the lack of custom positions on it.
I'd like a review of the new kit lens. The old one had macro and stabilization. A film sim.knob replacing ISO seems odd. Why not dedicate the sim an option on the dials? Since people shooting 40.keg pics probably want raw, there goes your son till post. Which makes sense. I don't mind warming up my white balance a bit.
I have reviewed the new kit lens!
Great review Gordon…and loved I could read it first and then watch the video! Only big surprise for me here was the fact that that the screen doesn’t fully articulate, but for many photographers that is a plus. Personally I would be happy if it just flipped up all the way. And I was hoping for weather sealing. A nice camera overall.
Lol the people freaking out about the film simulation dial 😂 This camera isn’t for you! Simple as that. (Plenty of Fujifilm cameras without a film simulation dial, like EVERY SINGLE ONE minus the X-T50).
Exactly!
How often does anyone change the film simulation once they’ve found the one they prefer? The drive dial was way more useful and its exclusion from the X-T50 is a deal breaker for me.
I've been shooting with Fujifilm cameras for years and personally speaking I regularly switch between my four or five favourite Film Sims every day when out and about. Again, it's differs for each person, but I personally change the Film Sim more often than the drive mode, so the dial suits me fine, but it would have been more flexible as a blank customisable one.
The X-T50 seems to be very intersting, but my preference goes to a future X-E5, with IBIS
I hope they make one...
@@cameralabs According to Fujirumors, rumor this week, they will but for 2025.
.....and with the 40mp sensor - but NOT with that new dial. Apparently, according to Fuji rumors, they are bring out the XE5 but not this year...maybe 2025
I have been using the X-T3 mercilessly as a walking camera since its release, having taken more than 500 thousand frames with it. In anticipation of it's death, I am looking for a replacement, but this camera clearly cannot become it. I just don't understand the button layout of the two-digit series, and the new film simulation wheel doesn't add any convenience for me. It seems like i'll get some lightly used X-T4 in the end.
Yep, an XT4 or XT5 would be best for you
Pity the person who ends up buying your lightly used XT-3
is the film simulation dial customizable?
Apparently not
You get 3 positions that you can customise.
You can customise three of the positions to different film sims, but you can't make it adjust, say, iso or drive mode
@@cameralabs not sure I can bring myself to pay $1500 for a camera with a completely useless dial sitting in prime position.
@@thomashill5768 fair enough!
what about the af-c? Is it as good as the X-T5? is it a bit closer to Sony Alpha system?
Since they share the same sensor and processor it should be equal to the X-T5. It isn't going to be as the Sony.
As the other reply says, it's essentially the same as xt5, and neither are as good as Sony for AF, especially for video.
@@cameralabs Thanks. I read around that the x-t5 gets really close to Sony system as per af. Not same sure, but close. I Don't care actually about video.
@@tommasoavati maybe depends what you're shooting. I find it not as good for wildlife or sports in motion
@@cameralabsok I get it. I do street though. Maybe sports is more demanding
great review!!
Thanks!
I don't get the strategy behind this ... X-Txx used to be priced as an 'entry drug' to get you into the system.
The xt30 still does that
I'm on my 6th GFX - but I can stop anytime I want.....
@@nelsonclub7722 :D
Gordon, thank you for another excellent, balanced review. You almost convinced me that the new film sim. dial is worth having. The Drive button looks powerful enough for most purposes. My main complaint is the surplus MPs. Who really needs 40? There's so much nonsense doing the rounds about resolution. Still, Fuji seems to have got quite a lot right with this one. I have an X-T5 and am debating swopping it for the X-T50, as I like smaller bodies.
DOES IT HAVE INTERNAL ND FILTER? NOT ONE REVIEWER HAS MENTIONED THIS.
No.
Excellent video Gordan, very intriguing camera. Not owning a Fuji camera, this one ticks a lot of boxes though the pricing is Fuji too! Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful camera but I feel an awkward middle child between the cheaper and excellent X-S20 and its bigger brother X-T5 available for marginally more money.
Does it have digital zoom? 1.4x and 2x like the x-t5? Thanks
I'm not sure, but most menu features are shared, so I'd guess yes.
This 40MP camera is USD 1400. Nikon & Sony offers 40MP for USD 2000. No brainer to decide which to buy. 😊
I just bought a canon 400D with a nifty fifty and I have to move out of my apartment cos there is no longer room for me there.
Soon all Fuji cams will cost the same. It is ridiculous. It seems like xh2 with a 23 f2 is an ideal Fuji combo. You can find it with a good discount now. X S20 is also good, but, again, not much cheeper. I love Fuji, but I am confused with their lineup
Next should be 40MP version of the FUJIFILM X-S20. That might be far cooler.
fuji calls 4 stops of ibis 7 stops... wtf
thanks for the heads up Mr. Laing
To be fair, I never get anywhere near the quoted compensation from ANY system.
@@cameralabs you got 6 stops on S5ii review :D double a74 and 50% more than this.
It's wild that they report these false numbers when anyone can test and disprove. Isn't good for credibility
Thanks for the nice review! In my view the X-T50 is greatly overpriced and too close to the now discounted X-T5.
At launch, the prices are quite close
As usual, the best review of the XT50 - great job Gordon. Well, my main disappointment...as a RAW shooter....is the addition of that gimmicky film sim dial. Why not leave it as accessible via the menu as before? This effectively reduces the XT50 to a jpeg shooter's camera. As most RAW shooters, I never use these presets so adding a dedicated dial that isn't even customisable is a backword step. Yes, film sims are popular to jpeg shooters and is great to have.....but not at the expense of turning a pricey, otherwise excellent camera into a dumbed down piece of kit. I wanted this camera as an everyday carry round and baby brother to my XT5...but this may just be a deal breaker
I hear ya, but there's still the X-T30 II, albeit without IBIS.
@@cameralabs ......And there lies the dilemma!! I really wanted the new sensor, processor and IBIS in a smaller body....the really unnecessary (in my opinion) introduction of this (un-programable) jpeg only dial is a waste of a dial for RAW. I may still get this camera because of the main benefits and try to get used to something I will never use!! If only they had made it programable. The XS10's film sim dial is blank and programable so maybe Fuji will bring out a firmware upgrade to make the film sim dial programable too
@@NJM1948
The really bad news is that even the FS1,2,3 positions are useless to me as a jpeg shooter as I can not assign them to custom recipe slots. Meaning that even I as a jpeg shooter will have that dial permanently set to C. Fuji are just weird, they develop the firmware to enable custom recipes but then don't take the logical step of adding custom slots to a new purpose built dial.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc As I said, Fuji should have left things alone....jpeg shooters happy - RAW shooters happy!!!
21:44 😄
Hi could you please do a comparaison between the XS20 vs A6700, i can't find any reviews that go into detail like
i would like to know the difference in Autofocus for both photo and video but also the handheld stabilization because fuji ibis is known to be bad in video and jumpy.
handheld stabilization when walking, panning thank you
Well the main problem is the price. Way to expensive. For 150-250€ you can get already the X-T5.
The X-Txx series was always a sub 1000€ camera. The X-S series used to be more expensive.
Should have been maximum priced like the X-S20
A film sim dial is the most ridiculous choice. What were they thinking?
Yes it makes no sense whatsoever for Fuji to put their Unique Selling Point on a dedicated dial, it should instead be buried in a menu. What were they thinking?
The Fuji employee who is responsible for xpro and XT 1-5 series now lives in Germany I believe so new chief designer?
21:58 my eyes are bleeding , For the prices they ask for all of their cameras, this is garbage. Its 2024 and the AF is like CDAF only. But hey , You have FILM SIM DIAL
Thank you for the review Gordon. I do have a message for Fujifilm and I hope they read this. We won't cancel our pre-orders. Produce more x100vi. 😁
Hope you receive it soon!
When I shot film, I did not like Fujifilm colours, there's a whole dial wasted for me.
If you don't like Fujifilm colours, why consider a Fujifilm camera?
Price too high for a dumbed down xt5. 30/30ii is head and shoulders above 50 as an all round baby brother camera and fujifilm know it. For £1300+ with a degraded kit lens it HAS to have meaningful weather sealing.
It's a strange move from this firm. Install a “dead” battery and offer a camera for such money. For another 900$ it would be interesting even with a 26MP sensor
For only a few hundred quid more, the XT5 is more attractive, especially as you said with discounts.
It can be close on price, definitely
If you want to pay that few hundred quid more for a larger, heavier, camera, which I don't. I'll simply wait for the street price to lower.
Of course the 30 II is being retained for now if budget is your primary concern.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc It’s a matter of choice. I use the XT5 for street and with prime lenses. I have not felt weight to be a constraint.
@@NotAnotherChannel_Channel
Yes, that was my point, I choose not to buy the XT5 for the reasons stated, size, weight, cost, making the XT-50 the obvious alternative. That does not matter to you, but it does to others.
Thanks. Your reviews are the best. $1,300 is overpriced. You can get an X-T5 for a few hundred more. No idea why people would pay this but looking at Fujis sales numbers, they apparently are. You will soon be paying $2k for crop sensor cameras. Just say no.
The xh series are already over 2k
@@cameralabs True but thats more of a niche, video centric model and a flagship camera. The X-T line is supposed to be their consumer budget line. The fact that Fuji were able to completely upgrade the GFX 100SII and release it for $1,000 less than the first one 3 years ago just tells you how badly they are price gouging and ripping us off. This is a whopping $500 more than the previous X-T30. There is zero reason for that, especially considering the much larger sensor in the GFX 100SII costs a lot more to produce than the one inside the X-T50.
@michaelbell75
You have to take into account inflation. Take the X-T30 launch price and add inflation.
@@JackBurton-qp4hc Then why is the GFX 100SII $1,000 cheaper than the previous model 3 years ago? Same inflation….
@@michaelbell75
Because the development costs have been depreciated and yields increased, lowering the unit cost. It's not rocket science!
Overpriced by about 400-500, so no, I'll stick with what I already have.
Battery and card place is a total deal breaker at this price point
I don't like it either, but it's a compromise for small bodies from most companies
@@cameralabs i know. Same for x100vi. But my hands are not so little that I would need xt50 instead of xt5. Almost same price. It'll boost the xt5 sells !
Sure it is a freat camera but not for that price.
The price is a bad joke tho...
First comment 😁
No second, and it's not even a comment on the video. Maybe watch the content then comment on it.
Film simulation dial gimmicky. Overpriced. Just get a used xt5
If you are happy with the increased size and weight and having a second-hand camera. Which many are not.
Fujifilms biggest problem: they have to stay true to their recognizable body shape and will hardly ever improve ergonomics.
just buy the xt5 💀

"The Fujifilm X-T50 becomes a compelling camera at its price point...."
You got to be kidding me!😅
The only place where I hear good words being spoken about the X-T50 is on TH-cam.
Let's not kid ourselves. It's overpriced and the film simulation dial should not have placed there.
I say, X-T30II or the X-T5. If you want to pay more, I suggest looking at Sony's excellent full frame sensor cameras and lenses.
Fujifilm has lost it here. They are merely capitalizing on the crazy sales of the X100VI.
Garbage kit lens❤
No it's not, I've reviewed it separately. Have you?
@@cameralabs I compare it with xf18-55 mainly, are there enough improvement? No. Even aperture is narrower, I think fuji afraids of killing xf16-55. I wish fuji releases smaller f2.8 version of xf16-55. I am gonna use my sigma 18-50, I even wanna move to Nikon. Fuji makes its customers unhappy.
18-55 is really poor on 40mp. Close focusing etc etc on new lens is so much better. A slight decrease in aperture (by small, I mean relative to jump to fast primes) is a fair trade to me. You can do most of what you could in 18-55, but also do lots of other things too.
The aperture/creative/light limitation of this lens and 18-55 are broadly similar. Need more light/shallow dog, go to a prime (or 16-55, but even that is struggling with 40mp wide open from my experience)
@@user-sk4dv4kn2m thanks for your sensible comment!
