    Definitely thinking of upgrading my Fe 85 1.8 Sony and getting this once the price is low enough / there's a good deal! Those 11 aperture blades!!! Beautiful. Sigma's DN lenses are such an asset for the E mount system right now and I hope this trend of smaller Art series primes will continue with maybe a new 50mm or 18mm!

    5 years ago they promised us mirrorless cameras will result in smaller lenses. It took some time, but here it is! Look at the Samyang primes for Sony. Or the Tamron zooms. Or this one.

    • @coolcat23
      @coolcat23 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Did they promise "computational photography" as well? Because that's what is being sold here. Without image correction, this lens shows heavy pincushion distortion and heavy vignetting. No free lunch, even if the mirror is omitted.

    Not sure if it's really optically better than its predecessor which I happen to own. Distortion and vignetting are pretty strong in this new version, and even though easily correctable in post, it comes with IQ degradation. Using a Canon EOS R5, I have no option to use this lens anyway, but even if I did, I am not sure whether I'd make the switch. Yes, I'd love to have 85/1.4 as compact as the new DG DN, but strong vignetting and distortion make it a little less attractive. There's no such thing as a free lunch, I guess.

    Great review. Thank you. I ordered the 85/1.8, until I came across this lens........cancelled the 85/1.8 order, and now the Sigma is on the way. The Sigma retails for 1050 on Amazon, currently, and for this price, it is a no-brainer for the size, quality and the wide aperture.

    • @ak4939
      @ak4939 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a great lens. However, once the hood is on, don't expect the lens to look small in any way.......with the hood on, it is just a little bit smaller than say the 135mm f/1.8 GM, which is a big prime by any measure. Without the hood, and compared to its f/1.4 peers, the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN is certainly much smaller........but I personally always shoot with the hood on.

  • @junxia8119

    Sigma led the way in building oversized lenses back then and set every player in the market (even Sony) to follow them, which has made us even doubt our idea that mirrorless systems should be compact. As a result, we have huge RF prime and fixed f2 lenses, bulky S1 series, and even a new weight unit , Noct 58. But guess what, they change their direction with several recent products, which is pretty surprising. Hope they would bring us more excitements like this in the future.

    • @felipecastro8668
      @felipecastro8668 ปีที่แล้ว

      But in fact, Sigma revolutionized the world of objective lenses. so much so that, even after years, the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2 couldn't beat the Sigma 85mm f/1.4 which costs less than half the price and delivers the same quality.

    I'm all about sarcasm and nerdy details. Although I do have some corrections:
    1:51 1 stone = 14 lbs... so 625g = 1/3.2 Noct = 1.38 lbs. = 0.0984 stone
    3:21 1 cubit = 18 in... so 0.85 m = 1.86 cubits

    It would be cool to see a comparison of this New Sigma 85 f1.4 DN with the new Canon RF 85 f1.2 L , I know both lenses are sharp, so I would like to see
    just a comparison of the contrast and subject separation ( or 3D pop ) wide open. and the quality of the background blur wide open. and also a bokeh ball comparison wide open. the new Canon RF is a lens that I am sure is great, but personally I don't want an 85 lens that weighs 1190g when there is a Sigma 85 that weighs 625g, and I will also take $1.199 over $2.500 any day. so the Canon better have some kind of an edge other than it being f1.2 to justify it's size and weight and price. I know to allot of people the new Canon L f1.2 primes are making them drool and want to go to the Canon system, but for me they are making me want to stay away from the system because of there size and weight. and I'm sure for many people the price.

      Sigma all day long! I owned all the 85mm lenses available for the Sony body and this really is the best for portraits. The G Master was so slow and loud to focus I returned it, they need to make an updated version for the G Master. The ZEISS Batis lens is great for outside work but has a focus issue if you do studio photography. I was shooting a client and had to remove the Batis and put the Sony 85mm 1.8 on, the Batis just would not nail the focus. If you only shoot portraits outside you won't notice the issue. This Sigma 85mm 1.4, Sigma 105mm 1.4, ZEISS 55mm 1.8 Sony 90mm macro are 4 of the best lenses I ever used for portraits.
